12-gold start by Sabah athletes

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s Para Sukma contingent kick-started the defence of their overall title on the opening day in Sarawak by winning 12 golds, seven silvers and eight bronzes on Monday.
The track and field contingent contributed eight golds through Ivan Jovic Suan (men’s 100m T42/T43/T44), Jacklon Ganding (men’s 100m T37), Hazwan (men’s 100m T45), Eljoe Gotiuh (men’s long jump T20), Elvsius John (men’s javelin F57), Bartholomew Marius (men’s discus F33), Mukhriz Ameer Izzuddin Abd Rauf (men’s 100m T47) and Doriah Poulus (women’s javelin F44).

The remaining four golds came from swimmers Abd Halim Mohammad (men’s breaststroke SB8 & 400m freestyle), Chia Faang Jann (men’s breaststroke SB4) and Ethan Khoo Yin Jun (men’s 100m backstroke S14).
Ethan Khoo  and Abd Halim also set new records in the men’s 100m backstroke S14 (1:05.20) and men’s 100m breaststroke SB8 (1:16.11) respectively.
Four of the silvers came from track and field athletes Mohd Nizamuddin Matahir (men’s 100m T38), Nelson Sevilin (men’s 100m T36), Jovita Joseph (women’s 100m T37) and Stenly Roy Ranius (men’s discus F13) while the other three silvers were from swimmer Jonathan Wong Zee Siang (men’s 100m breastroke SB4), archer Lidwina Isidore Andilah (women’s compound W2/ST) and table tennis player Rahimah Andungai (women’s wheelchair singles open).
Track and field also delivered five bronzes from Mercany Mizan (women’s 1,500m T20), Fredechi Asri (women’s discus F40), Mariana Sandra Rodger (women’s javelin F44), Elissieball Jonal (women’s long jump T20) and Victer Ben Salleh @ Binidik (men’s shot put F20).

The other two bronzes came from swimming in the Men’s 4x100m freestyle relay 34 points and mix 4x100m freestyle S14, with one from archer Jaynie Jamirin (women’s recurve W2/ST).
Sabah ended the day in second place behind hosts Sarawak who captured 14 golds, 10 silvers and 11 bronzes.
