Soda, coke, pop, or whatever you want to call it, isn’t good for you, but don’t tell that to the women of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. In Season 1 of the Hulu show, viewers all learned that these Mormon wives have an obsession with soda, or as they call it, “dirty soda.”
As viewers learned from cast member Demi Engemann, there are strict rules that Mormons must follow. “We don’t drink alcohol or do drugs and so, soda is kind of our vice,” she stated on the show. Throughout the season, the Mormon wives were seen enjoying parties with a variety of soda flavors which can be combined with syrups and creams. And, instead of a cup of coffee, these women will wake up with a 12-ounce can of coke.
So, what’s the deal with dirty soda and the obsession with it? Here’s the lowdown.

The Secret Lives Of Mormon Wives Viewers Were Intrigued With The Women’s Obsession With Soda
Hulu’s new series The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives follows 8 Mormon wives and mothers who try to rebuild their friendship and get back to their careers as TikTok influencers, known as MomTok, after a “soft-swinging” scandal rocked their community. However, what viewers noticed about these women is their odd obsession with soda, or what they call, dirty soda.
In almost every episode, the women are either talking about soda, having a party that includes gallons of soda, or going to Utah’s popular soda spot, Swig, in which they get very large cups of the sugary beverage. But, it’s not just a plain soda that these women order, they combine it with creamers and different syrups.
In Episode 5, Layla Taylor, Demi Engemann, and Jessi Ngatikaura are seen stopping by Swig, a soda-fountain chain popular in Utah. As one of the women calls getting her soda her “Mormon crack,” Demi proceeds to share her very specific soda order that she called a “chef’s kiss.”
“44oz sparkling water, sugar free coconut, sugar free vanilla, sugar free raspberry, sugar free pineapple, and coconut cream.”
Layla then proceeds to order her beverage, which she gets in a 44-ounce cup. She then states, “Six out of the seven days of the week, I’m having at least one 44-ounce soda. I’m probably only going to live to like 50, but it makes me happy.”
Why Do They Drink So Much Soda?
Drinking sugary beverages like Coke or Mountain Dew isn’t healthy, but it is The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ cast’s only alternative to caffeine. According to Cosmopolitan, as practicing members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mormons are not allowed to drink alcohol, tea or coffee. (Despite some of the wives being okay with drinking alcohol, aka Jessi swiging from a flask). Church prophet Joseph Smith was believed to have been told by God that “Hot drinks are not for the body or belly,” something the women mention on the show.

What Is Inside A Dirty Soda?
For those who might find themselves in Utah and stopping by a Swig, be prepared to order a soda with lots of syrup. According to Cosmopolitan, dirty sodas are “classic sodas such as Diet Coke, De Pepper, Fanta etc mixed with creams and various syrups to create a new drink.” In addition, the outlet notes that most of these dirty sodas incorporate coconut cream to add a different flavor. Cosmopolitan also states that dirty sodas have been around for over a decade so it’s really nothing new.
In a TikTok, Mayci Neeley and Taylor Frankie Paul answered a Reddit question provided by Cosmopolitanabout their soda obsession. More of a statement than a question, the Reddit user states, “Did anyone else find the whole Utah soda addiction exposure amusing? I live in Utah and can confirm this is extremely real.”
Taylor stated, “Everyone loves the soda. They don’t drink coffee, tea … well, a lot of them don’t, the majority. The lines at like Starbucks in every other states, there so busy, that’s how soda shops are.” She also called getting a dirty soda “a treat.”
