Cowichan Valley Capital signs with Army

Dylan Krick, 19, a goalie with the Cowichan Valley Capitals, has committed to Army West Point Hockey. The team plays in the Atlantic Hockey America conference out of West Point, NY. This season with the Capitals Krick has four wins and two losses through six games with a GAA of 3.33 and a save percentage of 0.902. Krick is from West Chester, PA.

Valley soccer stalwart dies

Long-time Cowichan Valley Soccer Association volunteer, coach, referee and all-around good guy Don Waddy has died. Waddy died unexpectedly at home on Oct. 29. He was 68.

“Don has been an absolute inspiration for Cowichan Soccer over the years,” said Hillary Fisher of the Cowichan Selects women’s team. “He has dedicated time over and over again, been there for the highs and lows, and he’s also been a volunteer for many teams in the Valley over the years.

“For most of us gals here that grew up with Don, he was there every Saturday and Sunday reffing one to three games a weekend (sometimes a day). He was always there rain or shine, with a smile on his face.”

KPMHA loses lifetime member

Lonnie Goodfellow, a former referee-in-chief, coach, and a Kerry Park Minor Hockey Association lifetime member has died.

On the KPMHA Facebook page in a post remembering him, the Association said “[Goodfellow] was a great mentor for so many within our association. He was instrumental in starting a development program for our officials to ensure that they received the guidance that was needed to succeed.”

Goodfellow was 67.

Mill Bay product makes ECHL

Kabore Dunn has made his professional hockey debut, playing for the Utah Grizzles of the East Coast Hockey League. The defender has one assist through five games so far this season. Dunn finished his NCAA career in the 2023-24 season with Lindenwood University in St. Charles Missouri. 

Three from Shawnigan Lake School at U18 Canadian Hockey Championships

Shawnigan Lake School students forward Taya Lonsdale, of Langley, and defender Cassandra Kehler, of Shawnigan Lake played with Team BC at the 2024 Women’s U18 Championship Nov. 3-9 in Quispamsis, NB.

Forward Zoe Cramer dressed for Team Manitoba. 

B.C. and Manitoba met in the tournament’s pool play on Nov. 3 and the B.C. players will have bragging rights when all three return to school as their team came from behind to secure a 4-3 victory.

The final tournament results were not available by the Citizen‘s press deadline. 

Vikes rugby earns USports silver

While they didn’t earn the championship title, the UVic women’s rugby team did compete in the final game of the season. UVic was beaten by UBC 8-3 in the U SPORTS championship final on Nov. 3. Sophomore Macy Wiebe of Duncan was on that roster. The Vikes brought the silver medal back to Vancouver Island for the second-straight season, also finishing as the national runners-up in 2023. The second-place showing ties for the program’s best finish at nationals. 

Three-straight titles for UVic women’s rowing

The UVic women’s rowing team completed the three-peat, taking their third-straight Canadian University Rowing Championship banner at Elk Lake, Nov. 3. As with the field hockey team, Cowichan athletes made up part of the roster.

Cobble Hill product and Shawnigan Lake School graduate Meghan Gillmore, who is in her sophomore year at UVic, and Cowichan Bay and Cowichan Secondary product Ella Stemler, a junior, were both on the roster but it’s unclear whether they took part in the final regatta.
