The Alabama high school football season is well underway and the Gadsden area has some big games in Week 5.
There are some big games in the area, headlined by the county line rivalry between Boaz and Sardis. In Dekalb County there are two big matchups in Class 3A Region 8 between Fyffe and Sylvania and Geraldine and Collinsville, both will have major playoff implications. Hokes Bluff and Etowah have big region games that could determine region standings when all is said and done this year.
This year, the Gadsden Times’ Maxwell Donaldson will be picking five games each week. In Week 5, Max went 3-2, his second straight winning record, moving his season record to 15-15.

Game of the Week: Fyffe hosts Sylvania
Fyffe is coming off of a one of its worst losses in a long time and are looking to rebound. The issue is there is a tough region foe standing in the way. Fyffe should get Logan Anderson back to full strength after he played sparingly in a return against Coosa Christian.
Both teams have shown a reliance on the run, with Sylvania relying on its own star: Aiden Parham. If Fyffe can get back to being Fyffe, this game should be the catalyst for a late season run.
Max’s Pick: Fyffe 38, Sylvania 21
Sardis hosts Boaz
Boaz started the season hot but slowed down over the past few weeks while Sardis has taken a step back after an exceptional 2023 season. Boaz has an offense that is capable of hanging with any team but will be looking to get back to that level, while Sardis is trying to piece together its second win of the season.
Max’s Pick: Boaz 35, Sardis 14
Geraldine hosts Collinsville
The Bulldogs and Panthers have been rolling since their only losses of the season coming in region to Fyffe and Sylvania. This game could be for third place or higher in the region, depending on how the rest of the season falls. The winner will still be in the hunt for a home playoff game while the loser will need a lot of help to get a top-2 seed in region play. Both teams rely on the run and have star running backs to get the job done, but don’t count out their quarterbacks making a big play.
Max’s Pick: Geraldine 35, Collinsville 21
WEEK FOUR:Hokes Bluff keeps rolling in Week 4: What we learned in Gadsden area high school football
TOP PERFORMERS:Etowah’s Jameson Scissum five touchdown night leads Gadsden area top performers
Etowah hosts Oneonta
The Blue Devils were so close to their second win of the season, and seemingly a turnaround after an 0-3 start but a double-overtime loss came to county rival Southside. Etowah will get another big game on the schedule when it hosts Oneonta, which is coming off its first win.
Etowah has Jameson Scissum, who has been on fire this year and he’ll be the difference.
Max’s Pick: Etowah 28, Oneonta 10
Hokes Bluff travels to Alexandria
Hokes Bluff is off to its best start in years, while Alexandria is starting to find its footing after a 1-2 start. The Eagles run game hasn’t been touched by anybody this year, led by a big and physical offensive line.
Max’s Pick: Hokes Bluff 35, Alexandria 14
