  • What Happens When Politics Takes Center Stage At The Olympics

What Happens When Politics Takes Center Stage At The Olympics

The Olympics, often celebrated as a forum for international cooperation and competition, have historically been a stage where the boundaries of sports and politics blur.

While many athletes focused on their performance, others used the global spotlight to make political statements, revealing the complex interplay between athletic competition and geopolitics. This dual nature of the Olympics—as both a sporting event and a political forum—has raised essential questions about the role of politics in international sports and the challenges of maintaining neutrality in a world fraught with political tension.

    Historical Context and Political Undercurrents

The Olympics have long served as a platform for political expression, from Jesse Owens’ defiance of Nazi ideology in 1936 to the Black Power salute by Tommie Smith and John Carlos in 1968. These moments underscored the Olympics’ role in advocating for social justice and political change, making them more than just a showcase of athletic prowess. The recent Paris Games continued this tradition, with athletes and nations using the event to highlight political and social issues.

Taiwan’s participation at under the name “Chinese Taipei,” a designation meant to appease China, illustrated the political sensitivities involved in Olympic participation. This forced compromise required Taiwanese athletes to navigate a complex landscape where national identity and political recognition often conflicted. The New York Times reported, “To be an Olympian from Taiwan is to not exist, at least not officially. To placate China, the island competes at the Games under the awkward designation of Chinese Taipei.” This statement reflected the broader political struggles faced by Taiwanese athletes, who had to balance their personal identities with the need to comply with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) regulations.

    The IOC’s Challenge with Neutrality

The IOC’s attempt to enforce political neutrality was akin to navigating a highly volatile geopolitical environment, requiring a strategic leadership approach. Leaders in such contexts had to employ a delicate balancing act—managing competing interests while upholding core principles. The IOC’s mandate that athletes refrain from making political statements was an effort to preserve the Games as a moment of international harmony. Yet this approach became increasingly difficult to sustain, as evidenced by the controversy over allowing athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete as neutral individuals despite their countries’ involvement in geopolitical conflicts.

Himanshu Rai, director at Indian Institute of Management Indore, said, “Political neutrality in sports is a myth. The Olympics, by their very nature, are entangled in political dynamics. Decisions about participation, national flags, and even the order of the parade of nations are influenced by political considerations.”

Economic theory provides further insights into the motivations of nations participating in the Olympics. Countries invested heavily in their Olympic programs not only to win medals but also to boost national prestige and, by extension, political and economic influence. This investment is akin to strategic spending in business where the aim is to maximize returns—in this case, both tangible and intangible, such as global recognition, soft power, and domestic morale.

Moreover, smaller or politically unrecognized regions like Hong Kong or Chinese Taipei used the Olympics as a platform to assert their unique identities. As reported in the New York Times, “No Olympic truce held during the Paris Games,” highlighting the constant interplay of politics and sports even amidst a supposed ceasefire. The Games served as a low-cost but highly visible form of international diplomacy, where even a single victory could generate significant political and social capital.

The Olympics as a Platform for Political Statements

Recent events at the Paris Games showed how the Olympics continue to be a powerful platform for political expression. The refugee team’s first-ever medal, a bronze in boxing won by Cameroonian-born Cindy Ngamba who resettled in Britain, illustrated how the Olympics could spotlight global issues like displacement and migration. Similarly, the victories of Hong Kong’s fencers, whose affiliations with differing political ideologies quickly became the subject of public debate, showed how sports achievements could become politicized.

“Every victory and defeat at the Olympics was loaded with symbolic meaning,” Vijay Pereira said in an interview. The distinguished professor of international and strategic human capital management at NEOMA Business School added, “For athletes from politically contested regions, their performance could be seen as a statement, whether they intended it or not.”

The IOC’s leadership faced ongoing challenges in navigating these complex dynamics. The organization’s efforts to keep the Games free from overt political disputes achieved mixed results. On one hand, the IOC managed to sustain the event despite numerous geopolitical challenges. On the other, decisions like permitting athletes from controversial regions to compete under neutral flags were criticized for being inconsistent and potentially hypocritical.

“Every Olympiad presented a fresh set of political challenges,” Rai observed. “From apartheid to the contemporary disputes involving various nations, the Games have always mirrored the prevailing political landscape. The IOC’s efforts to remain neutral often forced it into paradoxical positions where every decision had far-reaching implications.”

Looking Ahead to Los Angeles 2028

As the world looks ahead to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the lessons from the Paris Games remain fresh. The upcoming Games, officially known as the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad, will likely continue to reflect the intersection of sports and politics. The Los Angeles 2028 organizers will need to consider how to handle similar challenges, from managing geopolitical tensions to ensuring that the Games remain a space for fair competition.

Both Pereira and Rai suggested that the Los Angeles Olympics could be another testing ground for the IOC’s ability to navigate the fine line between political neutrality and the reality of global politics. The strategic decisions made by the IOC and the LA28 organizing committee will be closely watched, not just by athletes and fans, but also by political leaders around the world.

“We might expect the next Games to see even more overt expressions of national identity and political statements,” Pereira said. “As global tensions continue to evolve, the Olympics will inevitably reflect these dynamics.”

Rai added, “The 2028 Games will be a significant opportunity for the IOC to refine its approach to handling political issues in sports. How they manage these complexities will set the tone for future Olympics.”

As the countdown to Los Angeles 2028 begins, the world will be watching to see how the IOC and the host city navigate these challenges, balancing the ideals of the Olympic spirit with the realities of a politically charged global environment. The Games will continue to be a stage not just for athletic excellence but for the broader struggles and ambitions that shape our world.

  • Olympic champion Toby Roberts’ example is sending young people up the wall | Rock climbing

“He’s really good at climbing,” says eight-year-old Ivy Wilson, who has just scaled a wall at the Cambridge branch of Clip ’n Climb, the New Zealand-founded “theme-park meets climbing walls” experience that spawned a global phenomenon. “I like how he did it so fast.”

The man in question is Toby Roberts – the 19-year-old climbing wunderkind who struck gold for Team GB in the men’s boulder and lead event at this summer’s Olympics in Paris.

The fresh-faced Roberts, who was given the unlikely nickname of “the Terminator” by his teammates, became the first British male climber to qualify for the games when he won the 2023 European qualifiers in Laval, France.

His unexpected win in Paris is now propelling a whole new generation of climbers through the door of this Cambridge climbing centre, says the owner Beth Walthew – so many that she saw a 35% rise in footfall the week following Roberts’ triumph.

Walthew is not alone in feeling “the Terminator” effect: climbing centres across Britain are reporting a surge in interest after the teenager’s historic win.

Toby Roberts on his way to winning gold in the men’s boulder and lead final at the Paris Olympics. Photograph: Christophe Ena/AP

“There was a lot of buzz here around Toby Roberts,” says Walthew. “We had an in-house speed climbing competition the week of the games and everyone was talking about it. Anything that gets climbing into the public psyche is a good thing.”

Walthew estimates that about 80% of her customer base is under 18, with children as young as two giving the sport a go as part of the centre’s “Little Rockers” toddler group. “Kids will come to us as a first step before they move on to traditional indoor climbing walls and that’s brilliant to see.”

Climbing is a new addition to the Olympic roster, having debuted at the Tokyo 2020 games. But interest in the sport has been a slow burn, says Katie Varian, managing director of Eden Rock Edinburgh, which is home to Scotland’s biggest indoor bouldering wall. “Climbing seems so behind other sports in terms of the number of people who know about it,” she says.

Unlike Tokyo 2020, where climbers competed for a combined top score across speed, boulder and lead events, climbing at this year’s Olympics was split into two separate competitions – with speed climbing standing as a separate event and boulder and lead climbing combined as another.

Ivy Wilson, eight, navigates a series of climbing poles at the Clip ’n Climb centre in Cambridge. Photograph: Antonio Olmos/The Observer

Which is just as well, because it was Ivy’s favourite fixture. “I climb everything,” she says. “Even at places where I’m not supposed to.”

Her mother Sarah’s interest in the sport, meanwhile, will resonate with parents the world over: “It’s a great place to take them because it means they won’t be climbing the furniture in my house.”

Ashley Loveday, 15, is considering enrolling in an indoor climbing course having honed his skills at Clip ’n Climb. “It’s just fun to do,” he says. “I really like climbing to new heights and completing new challenges.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Walthew opened the centre with her husband, Chris, in 2016, having visited one of the UK’s first Clip ’n Climbs while on holiday in Exeter. “Our daughter just loved it, and it was amazing to see how quickly she was able to progress,” she says.

The Clip ’n Climb approach uses an auto-belay system that means children can climb trails of up to seven metres knowing that if they fall, they will be released gently back to the ground. The UK has been the Kiwi company’s biggest success story, with 80 centres and counting across the nation.

Beth Walthew, left, owner of Clip ’n Climb in Cambridge, with Tamara Willoughby, the centre’s manager. Photograph: Antonio Olmos/The Observer

But not all in the climbing community welcome the craze. “It’s a bit like if we’d won gold and everyone went and played crazy golf,” says Phil Minal, co-owner of Redpoint Birmingham.

“It wouldn’t exactly increase golf participation. Not to diss Clip ’n Climb, but indoor climbing gyms like ours are more of a chance to learn proper technique, which ultimately leads to people becoming independent climbers.”

But for many, the colourful walls of these school holiday hotspots provide an important stepping stone. “We have had an increase in interest in our climbing classes, which hopefully means that there will be a steady flow of future climbers feeding into Team GB in the future,” says Keely Weir, managing director of Clip ’n Climb Bicester.

Oliver Scott, 11, first climbed at Weir’s centre aged five and has now progressed to a traditional climbing gym. “I would love to be as good as Toby Roberts one day,” he says. “It’s cool that my friends now know the name of a climber. Before he got gold they didn’t know many.”

  • This Study Says Meat May Raise Diabetes Risk – Heres How To Ease Off Without Sacrificing Flavour

This Study Says Meat May Raise Diabetes Risk – Heres How To Ease Off Without Sacrificing Flavour

Eating excessive red and processed meat in your daily diet may make you feel happy, especially if you have grown up eating too much meat, however, the consequences of such a diet may not be great for your health. In a new study published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, researchers analysed data from nearly two million adults participating in 31 studies from across 20 countries, including the United States and parts of Europe and Asia. The researchers analysed the impact of the participants’ diet on their health after an average of 10 years and found a link between meat consumption and Type 2 diabetes risk.

After adjusting for other risk factors, they found that for every 1.8 ounces (about 50 grams) of processed meat, the participants ate each day, their risk for Type 2 diabetes increased by 15 per cent. Further, for every 3.5 ounces (about 100 grams) of unprocessed red meat they consumed daily, their risk increased by 10 per cent.

Why Red And Processed Meat Is Not Good For You:

There are possible reasons why it is not healthy to consume too much red and processed meat:

    1. According to health experts, red and processed meats tend to be higher in saturated fats which is associated with greater insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes risk.

    2. If you are eating excessive red and/or processed meat, you may not be eating enough healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.

    3. Cooking meat at high temperatures can also form compounds that may cause cell damage, inflammation and insulin resistance, as per research.

How To Improve Diet And Reduce Meat Consumption:

Want to reduce your overall meat consumption but struggling? Here are four key approaches to cutting back the red meat, according to Harvard Health.

    1. To Not Quit Suddenly

Instead of suddenly stopping your meat consumption, begin by gradually reducing the amount of red meat you eat. Assess how much red meat you consume daily/weekly and start cutting that down.

    2. Choose Healthier Meats

Since red meat is specifically associated with more health risks compared to other types of meats, you can swap it with healthier alternatives like poultry or seafood.

    3. Try Plant-Based Foods

Once you give it a try, you will learn to understand and enjoy the flavours of plant-based foods like beans, nuts, whole grains, and veggies. Choosing these more often will help reduce your meat consumption.

Remember to eat foods that benefit your overall physical and mental health.

Eddie Howe cagey over Newcastle future and admits ‘it’s difficult to give any reassurance on anything in football’ – as speculation mounts following a frustrating transfer window

Eddie Howe admits he cannot give supporters assurances over his Newcastle future – but says his only focus is on staying at the club for a ‘long time’.

While the England job is open and with the head coach having conceded his frustration at a summer window in which key positions such as centre-back and right-wing were not strengthened, there remains some uncertainty over Howe’s future.

Asked if he could would consider walking away – like Kevin Keegan had done amid transfer angst in 2009 – Howe said: ‘This isn’t a loaded answer, but it’s difficult to give any reassurance on anything in football.

‘But I absolutely love being Newcastle manager and I’m very proud to do it.

‘No part of me is thinking anything other than trying to beat Tottenham and looking, hopefully, to a long reign here.’

Profit and Sustainability Rules have limited what Newcastle can do in the transfer market, and Howe added: ‘A lot has changed in terms of PSR (since the Saudi-led takeover in 2021).

‘The biggest change, the inability to spend, and our need to comply with rules to prevent a points deduction.

‘Of course that impacts the ability to progress the club as quickly as maybe they wanted to.

‘I don’t think the dream dies, necessarily, it takes a lot longer. We have got to build our revenue streams, that is the biggest thing.

‘Bring more money into the football club, however we do that, sponsorship, loads of things.

‘That is the big thing we need to focus on in the next 10 years, whether I am lucky enough to see any of that, who knows.

‘So the dream is not over, it is just going to take a lot, lot longer.’

Meanwhile, Howe admits he would have been powerless to prevent a star name leaving the club at the end of June as Newcastle battled to avoid breaching PSR rules.

‘I can’t act like that (say no to a player leaving),’ he said. ‘It’s not about my want. Especially in June, it was about what the club needs.

‘We could have been sat here with a huge points deduction and everyone would say, “Why didn’t they sell players?”.

‘You have to choose which way you want to go with it, and we couldn’t go down that route (points deduction). Selling players was a necessity, and it was very difficult to do.’

Meet Shakshuka but with a desi twist. Sounds cool, right?

What’s Shakshuka? And How Do You Give It A Desi Twist?

In simple terms, shakshuka is a North African dish with poached eggs usually enjoyed at breakfast. The name basically means ‘mixture,’ where you saute tomatoes and onions with spices, then poach eggs on top. It’s healthy, filling, and super easy to make, which is why it’s become a hit in places like Israel, Libya, Morocco, and Turkey. It even made its way to Spain, where they often add their local sausage, Chorizo.

But here’s where it gets interesting: we took the same onions, tomatoes, and eggs, and swapped out the African spices for our very own desi ones-think turmeric, coriander, red chili powder, and black pepper. And instead of regular oil, we used ghee for that extra flavor and nutrition. Sounds tasty, right? So what are you waiting for? Grab your chef’s hat, crack open a couple of eggs, and head to the kitchen.

Why Is Desi Shakshuka A Healthy Choice?

As we mentioned earlier, eggs are a powerhouse of protein, minerals, vitamins, and other essential nutrients. And by adding ghee, you’re boosting the dish with healthy fats and carbs that keep you going all day. Want to know more about the benefits of cooking with ghee? Click here.

How To Make Indian-Style Shakshuka At Home:

This recipe comes from nutritionist Shikha Gupta, who’s all about making healthy food interesting.

    • Start by heating an iron pan.
    • Add some ghee and saute green chilli, onion, ginger, and garlic.
    • Next, toss in tomatoes, salt, and turmeric, cooking until the tomatoes get soft.
    • Once the gravy reaches a medium consistency, crack the eggs into it, and sprinkle some salt and coriander.
    • Cover the pan and cook until the egg whites are set. And just like that, your dish is ready to be served hot.

  • Kirby Smart gives Formula For Georgia Football’s Flirtation With Eternal Victory

Kirby Smart gives Formula For Georgia Football’s Flirtation With Eternal Victory

Granted, No. 1 Georgia looked on the verge Saturday of sprinting toward a third national championship in four years. With barking from their followers throughout Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the Bulldogs smashed No. 14 Clemson 34-3, but you know what?

    It was just one game.

It also was the season opener for both teams.

    That said . . .

    Georgia may never lose again.

If nothing else, the Bulldogs will keep stringing together victories through this regular season, and perhaps longer.

OK, that’s a bit much, but all things are possible for your college football program when you’re nearly guaranteed to pocket the estimated $3 million to $5 million going to everybody in the new 12-team College Football Playoff, and when you can make the case for having each of the following:

    • The best coach (Kirby Smart, who is 95-16 during his eight seasons at Georgia, with two national championships and a 9-2 record in bowl games).
    • The best offensive coordinator (Mike Bobo, who spent his first coaching stint at Georgia turning Matthew Stafford into the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft as a quarterback and who is trending toward doing the same with Carson Beck in the 2025 NFL Draft).
    • The best defensive coordinator (Glenn Schumann, who has been a part of three consecutive Top Five defenses, including the Jordan Davis bunch of 2021 that held foes to a modern record of 6.9 points per game).
    • The best quarterback (Beck, see Bobo above, and Beck is among the top Heisman Trophy candidates).
    • The best defensive player (or at least the best defensive back, especially since Malaki Starks has the early lead for Defensive Play of the Year in the Secondary with his running, leaping and backwards grab of an interception against Clemson).
    • The best talent to complement the best quarterback and the best defender (The Bulldogs are guaranteed their ninth consecutive Top Five recruiting class under Smart).

Now consider: Even though this isn’t the Clemson program that made six consecutive trips to the playoffs through 2020, the current Tigers are solid enough to capture the ACC championship and to send its usual massive collection of players to the NFL Draft, especially on defense.

Then consider: Trevor Etienne is Georgia’s first-string running back, but he was suspended for the Clemson game by the university for an arrest earlier this spring on DUI and reckless driving charges.

Then consider: Against Clemson, Georgia had seven penalties for 70 yards; Beck wasn’t always his vintage self as the master of pinpoint passes; and the Bulldogs only led 6-0 at halftime.

In sum, without their A Game, Smart’s latest collection of future NFL Pro Bowlers still crushed a pretty good Clemson team by more than four touchdowns with something like their B-minus Game.

“It was a good first half. Tough, hard-fought first half. Then they just freaking kicked our tails in the second half,” said Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, owner of two national championships during his 17 seasons with the Tigers. “Congrats to them. They’re a great team. They’ve been a great team.”

The Bulldogs are so great that they’ve won 43 of their last 45 games, including 40 in a row during the regular season. That’s the stuff of those Oklahoma teams with a 47-game winning streak from 1953 to 1957.

Actually, Georgia’s streak is more impressive.

Unlike Oklahoma, Georgia is dominating during the era of the transfer portal (which essentially is free agency without the salary cap), and Name, Licensing and Image (NIL) deals that can distrupt a locker room in a flash.

That means rosters are constantly evolving.

Despite it all, Smart has gone weeks, months and years keeping his players and coaches focused on winning — no matter the opponent, the venue, the circumstances (on and off the field, where a slew of other Bulldogs have joined Etienne with driving-related arrests) or anything else.

What’s the key to Georgia’s ability to keeping “the main thing the main thing” as Kirby and his players like to say?

“I think it’s a process. We believe in what we do. The leaders on our team that I meet with, they believe in it, they sell it, they push it to the younger players,” Kirby told me after the Clemson game when I asked him the question.

“I think somebody said the other day we had 38 or 42 my advisor brought to me. We had 42 or 38, I can’t remember what it was. I had to sign something saying they were all eligible and they were all new. We had 38 or 42 new people. New.

Kirby was just getting started, adding, “When you turn over that much, you’d better have a nucleus around them that can keep them grounded. That is what we’ve been able to sustain at Georgia is, we’re not going to change what we do based on who we play. We’re going to do what we do and we’re going to try to out-execute you and just do it the right way.

“I think a lot of people that’s hard to do it the hard way all the time, because everybody wants to find an easier way. There’s no easy way to win these games. They’re all hard.”

    Unless you’re Georgia.

Here Are 5 Interesting Ways To Use Used Green Tea Bags

    1. Powerhouse For Plants

Do you feel like water and manure are not enough for your plants? Then use your used green tea bags to give them some extra love. Used green tea bags are packed with nutrients that can boost your soil. Just cut the green tea bag and bury the leaves directly in your garden or toss them in your compost pile. These leaves help retain moisture, and improve soil structure, and a dash of nitrogen that your plants would absolutely love! It’s like giving your plants a daily shot of espresso, without the taste. So, the next time you finish your tea, think twice before tossing that tea bag.

    2. Keep Your Fridge And Shoes Smell-Free

Is your refrigerator reeking a bit “ripe?” Are your shoes smelling a little funky? Then use your leftover green tea bags to eliminate unwanted odours. Just dry the green tea bags and put them in your fridge and shoes. Green tea is a master when it comes to absorbing funky smells and will leave everything smelling fresh and fabulous.

    3. Give Your Skin Some Natural Care

If you spend a fortune on skincare products, then it’s time to change your habits! Green tea bags are here to save the day. These little wonders are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce puffiness on your face and brighten up your skin. All you have to do is chill the used tea bags in the fridge and then place them over your eyes and face. It is like a natural, de-puffing eye treatment. Or, you can steep them again, let the tea cool and use it as a facial toner. It is like a mini-spa treatment but without over-the-top expenditure.

    4. Swap Chemical-Cleaners For A Natural One

Forget chemicals-packed house cleaners. Your leftover used green tea bags can make your home sparkle and shine naturally. All you have to do is take 6-7 green tea bags and re-steep them in hot water. Once the leaves release their flavours, let the water cool down. With this water, you can wipe down wooden furniture, glass, or even mirrors. The tannins present in green tea can help remove dirt and grime and leave your home essentials looking gorgeous and shiny. Plus, your house will smell fresh and earthy after the cleaning, so win-win!

    5. Treat Skin Irritations Naturally

Did you get a sunburn or a nasty bug bite? Then green tea bags can come to your rescue. Thanks to their anti-inflammatory properties, used green tea bags can provide instant relief from minor skin irritations. After you finish your green tea, let the bag cool down and then put it in your fridge to chill. Then gently press the cold tea bags onto the affected area. It is a quick and easy way to reduce redness, swelling and mild itching on your skin. So, the next time you have a bug bite, you know what to do!
