Insider:A questionable call gave Brownsburg life. A gutsy call won the Bulldogs a regional title.
Here are this week’s nominees:
Jack Browning, Center Grove: The senior has made the most of his impact on defense at linebacker for the Trojans but helped to jumpstart the offense with 11 carries for 57 yards and two touchdowns in Center Grove’s 23-15 win over Warren Central for a 6A regional title.
Fa’Rel Carter, Decatur Central: The junior had three catches for 104 yards and one touchdown and rushed six times for 43 yards in Decatur Central’s 21-16 win over East Central for a 5A regional championship. Carter also knocked the ball away from an East Central receiver on fourth down at the 1-yard-line to end the game.
Lucas Dewey, Martinsville: The junior running back carried 34 times for 239 yards and one touchdown and caught a 22-yard TD pass as third-ranked Martinsville knocked off Evansville Reitz 35-28 for the program’s first regional title since 1996.
Larry Ellison, Crown Point: The senior ran for 248 yards and two TDs as the Class 6A second-ranked Bulldogs cruised to a 38-21 win over FW Carroll and the program’s second consecutive regional championship.
Calder Hefty, Garrett: The senior quarterback was 6-for-9 passing for 222 yards and two TDs and ran for 87 yards and three TDs as fourth-ranked Garrett knocked off Knox 41-40 to stay undefeated. Hefty’s 64-yard pass to Alex Guzman with a little more than one minute remaining.
Deacon King, Westfield: King continues to make appearances on this list seemingly every week. The junior ran 33 times for 220 yards and one touchdown and caught a 28-yard TD pass as Class 6A third-ranked Westfield pulled away for a hard-fought 42-28 win over Fishers.
Braylon McBride, Linton-Stockton: The quarterback drove Linton-Stockton 80 yards in the final 1:21, completing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Feltner with 27 seconds remaining for a 22-21 win over Brownstown Central in a Class 2A regional. McBride passed for 263 yards and three TDs.
Javier McCoy, Andrean: The freshman ran for 176 yards on 32 carries and three TDs as Andrean knocked off top-ranked Lafayette Central Catholic for a 2A regional title. McCoy’s 22-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter was the winning score.
Austin McMahan, New Palestine: The senior wide receiver/defensive back contributed on both sides of Class 4A top-ranked New Palestine’s 28-21 overtime win over No. 4 Bishop Chatard. McMahan had three receptions for 49 yards and a 40-yard TD and intercepted a pass and returned it 27 yards in the fourth quarter.
Hudson Mills, Lutheran: Mills caught touchdown passes of 26 yards and 31 yards and returned an interception 64 yards for another score for Lutheran’s first three scores in a 35-0 win over Lapel for a Class 2A regional title.
Jack Sorgi, Tri-West: Tri-West came up a little short in a 41-37 loss to Batesville in a Class 3A regional as the Bulldogs scored with 11.5 seconds remaining. Sorgi, a sophomore, had a huge game as he was 21-for-31 passing for 410 yards and four TDs. Senior Logan Anderson (seven catches for 159 yards, two TDs) and Jax Garver (five catches for 131 yards) both went over 100 receiving yards.
Iosua Stephens, Brownsburg: The senior helped jumpstart the Bulldogs’ offense in the second half with a 46-yard run, followed by a touchdown run to tie the score. Stephens finished with 13 carries for 130 yards and two TDs and a 2-point conversion with 13 seconds left to provide the difference in Brownsburg’s 22-21 win over top-ranked Lawrence North. It is the Bulldogs’ first regional title in 39 years. Stephens was also 2-for-4 passing for 24 yards.
Drew Sullivan, Warsaw: The Warsaw quarterback rushed for a staggering 310 yards on 32 carries as No. 10 Warsaw defeated No. 3 Lafayette Jeff 44-27.
Daryea Williams, FW Bishop Luers: The senior ran for 135 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries and also caught a 14-yard pass as Luers knocked off No. 7 Maconaquah 31-28 to win a 3A regional title.
