Outstanding Arsenal thump Sporting 5-1 in Lisbon

LISBON :Bukayo Saka scored one goal and set up another as Arsenal thrashed Portuguese side Sporting 5-1 in their Champions League clash at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday, their biggest away win in the competition in 21 years.

Gabriel Martinelli put Arsenal ahead early on before Kai Havertz and Brazilian defender Gabriel added two more goals before halftime as Arsenal overwhelmed their hosts.

Goncalo Inacio pulled a goal back for Sporting early in the second period, but Saka restored Arsenal’s three-goal advantage with a penalty and Leandro Trossard got a fifth for their biggest away win in the Champions League since victory by the same scoreline at Inter Milan in 2003.

Arsenal moved above Sporting to seventh place in the 36-team table with 10 points from their five games. The Portuguese side have the same number of points but are one position back on goal-difference.

After a mini-slump in recent weeks, Arsenal have back-to-back wins and look to be finding their best form again with some of their play in Lisbon simply outstanding.

They were finding plenty of joy on the right wing and their first two goals both came from attacks down that side.

Jurrien Timber’s low cross eluded everyone and provided a tap-in for Martinelli at the back post to put the visitors ahead inside seven minutes.

Arsenal continued to set the tempo and deservedly doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Saka burst into the box and poked the ball past Sporting goalkeeper Franco Israel, providing another simple finish for Havertz.

Sporting’s lively 17-year-old winger Geovany Quenda forced a good save from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya just before the break in a rare foray forward for the hosts, but they fell further behind in the final seconds of the half.

Defender Gabriel met a Declan Rice corner to head his side further in front and few could argue Arsenal were full value for their 3-0 lead.

They would have hoped for a composed start to the second half but instead allowed Sporting a way back into the game.

Francisco Trincao’s corner was met at the front post by Inacio, who volleyed into the back of the net to offer his side a lifeline.

Arsenal were by no means as dominant in the second period, but earned a penalty when Martin Odegaard was fouled from behind by Ousmane Diomande and Saka coolly slotted the spot-kick into the bottom right corner.

Substitute Trossard added a fifth with a header after Israel could only parry Mikel Merino’s long-range shot into his path.

Wigan Athletic will hope November snub can ease Man Utd and Arsenal transfer pressure

Wigan Athletic’s League One form heading into the November international break is far from satisfactory, as the Latics have not won in the third tier since a 3-0 victory over Peterborough United on 1st October.

The Latics’ big win over the Posh last month arrived as part of an impressive run in which Shaun Maloney’s men enjoyed seven consecutive clean sheets in all competitions, with six of those shut-outs coming in League One.

But since then, the Greater Manchester side have won just one of their last five games, which came in the form of a 2-0 triumph over League Two Carlisle United in the FA Cup first round, and even then Maloney’s side did require extra time to get the job done at Brunton Park against inferior opposition.

The majority of the Latics squad will look to utilise the international break as an opportunity to put in the hard yards on the training ground in an effort to address their poor league form.

Meanwhile, the likes of Dale Taylor and Thelo Aasgaard, who represent the Northern Ireland Under-21s, and Norway Under-21s respectively, will be in action for their nations over the course of the next week.

Latics goalkeeper Sam Tickle has also become used to international call-ups since keeping a clean sheet on debut for the England Under-21s last season, but did not receive a call-up this time around.

While the talented shot-stopper has not received an international call-up for November, there is no doubting his impressive ability between the sticks.

Following Tickle’s exploits at Brunton Park, Maloney said: “Sam has made two unbelievable saves at the end, and he’s just an unbelievable talent.

“And I still don’t think people realise how good this guy is.

“If there is a shot to be saved and my job depends on it, or my life depends on it, there isn’t another English goalkeeper in all four leagues I’d choose over him.”

But contrary to Maloney’s comments when heaping heavy praise on his goalkeeper, Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal are seemingly very aware of the 22-year-old’s abilities between the sticks, as they are both tracking his progress, according to TeamTalk.

However, Tickle’s recent omission from the England Under-21 squad will mean that the youngster will not have another chance to display his ability on the international stage ahead of the January transfer window, which could be enough to stave off interest for now.

There is no doubt that the Latics will have to eventually sell their academy graduate due to the increasingly high profile interest in his services, but the fact that he is not in the Young Lions team this month could give the Greater Manchester club the transfer respite they need.

Amid a potential relegation battle, the Tics simply have to retain their star man come January, as he has kept an impressive total of seven clean sheets in 14 League One outings.

Maloney was surprised at Tickle’s England snub

After the Young Lions chose to leave Tickle out of their squad on this occasion, the Latics boss told Wigan Today: “I was really surprised, I have to say.

“I’ve been on the other side, when you’re involved with an international team, and you have to make decisions that will leave some club managers happy and some unhappy.

“Honestly, I don’t know the reasons, I’ve had absolutely no feedback from the manager or goalkeeping coach.

“But this game is about opinions, and my opinion, and I’m sure time will back me up, is that this guy is going to be a top, top goalkeeper.

“It’s a privilege to have him at this club.”

But while Maloney is surprised by England’s decision not to include Tickle in their Under-21 squad this time around, it could be a blessing in disguise for the Tics, who could do without being forced into a sale this January.

Arsenal chiefs have set their sights on an “exciting” potential signing for manager Mikel Arteta, with reports coming after sporting director Edu Gaspar announced his departure from N5.

The high-ranking transfer chief was responsible for some of their most pivotal signings of the last five years – perhaps most notably current club captain Martin Odegaard for just £30 million and their club-record deal for Declan Rice – with Edu also playing a major role in the appointment of Arteta.

Comfort for Arsenal as update emerges on transfer planning after Edu exit

The Brazilian will be a sore miss, but the club have back up.

Both the Brazilian and Arsenal’s manager worked in tandem as they developed the side from a mid-table team to genuine Premier League title challengers, ending their long hiatus from the Champions League and delivering some major silverware in the process.

However, following a shock exclusive report from journalist Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail, who originally broke the news, it was revealed that Edu would be leaving his post as Arsenal sporting director – a role which he has held since 2022 after being promoted from technical director.

Later that same day, it was confirmed by the club and Edu himself, with Arteta since breaking his silence on the departure of a key club ally.

“Everything happened very quickly,” said Arteta on Edu’s departure.

“Obviously I loved working with him, I really enjoyed being alongside him on this incredible journey. From day one we’ve been together. First of all I’m very grateful personally for everything he’s done for me, and for the amazing work he’s done for the football club. I think we both had this special chemistry, working together, we really both enjoyed our roles and working together. I’m very blessed he’s been part of my life in such a beautiful place that I am right now, managing this amazing club and he’s been a massive part of that. He’s got an amazing opportunity now to do something else, in a different role and he believes it’s the right professional move for him. We have to respect that, and from the bottom of my heart, everybody really feels that we want the best for him.”

Obviously, concerns have since emerged over the club’s transfer planning. Reliable journalist Simon Collings shared a comforting update in this regard, saying Arsenal’s remaining executives can handle major dealings after Edu’s departure.

It was also stated that Arsenal’s transfer groundwork is often done a year in advance, so it appears they could already be prepared for January and next summer.

According to Sky Germany and journalist Kerry Hau, as transcribed by Sport Witness, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson is a man on their agenda in the wake of Edu’s exit.

Arsenal have Larsson “in their sights” to sign, alongside the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham, with the 20-year-old starting this season impressively. The six-cap Swede boasts three goals and an assist from his opening 14 matches, with Hau also calling Larsson an “exciting” player to watch out for.

“Hugo Larsson is one of Eintracht Frankfurt’s shooting stars and is currently one of the most exciting midfielders in the Bundesliga,” he said.

“The 20-year-old Swede has already aroused the interest of several top clubs. According to our information, the Premier League is currently looking at him.

“Some top-class teams, right behind Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC and also Tottenham Hotspur, we hear, have Larsson in their sights, but also one or two Bundesliga competitors.

“Nevertheless, the Frankfurt bosses around Markus Dröschel can sit back and relax, because Larsson feels at home on the Main and that is why he recently extended his contract early until 2029 and, very importantly, from Frankfurt’s point of view, without an exit clause.”

Sky Sports Share Update on Arsenal ‘Power Struggle’ After Edu Exit

Reports of a power struggle at Arsenal following sporting director Edu’s departure are entirely untrue, Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has reported.

The former midfielder, who was part of the Arsenal side that last won the Premier League in 2003/04, announced his departure on Monday, citing his desire to ‘pursue a different challenge’ after spearheading the Gunners’ revival in recent years.

The Brazilian has been responsible for securing key signings such as Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice in recent seasons, as well as Arsenal’s strong performance in recruitment. He is now set to join Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and his network of clubs.

Initially, reports claimed that Edu’s shock departure was a sign of a power struggle within the Emirates, with journalist Miguel Delaney reporting on the matter:

“There have been a few hints about, not necessarily a power struggle at Arsenal, but a reshuffle in the dynamics and people are speculating about whether that has influenced that decision.

“I think part of it is Edu wanting more power somewhere and the Marinakis group are willing to offer it to him.”

However, Sheth has now dismissed these rumours, stating it was entirely Edu’s decision to move after spending five years with the Gunners since rejoining in July 2019:

“Yes, it is a blow for Arsenal, we understand that they’re disappointed at the news. But I’m told that talk of any kind of internal power struggle is totally untrue. This is entirely Edu’s decision to move.”

Now being lined up to take a senior post within Marinakis’ group, potentially in a chief executive position, Edu has reportedly been offered a package worth considerably more than his current terms at Arsenal and is believed to view the role as the next step in his career progression.

The 46-year-old could now lead Marinakis’ group recruitment efforts to support the likes of Forest, Greek club Olympiacos, and Portuguese side Rio Ave.

According to GMS journalist Ben Jacobs, sources close to both Marinakis and Nottingham Forest have yet to provide a clear indication of when Edu might start, as the scope of the role is still being finalised.

After a disappointing 1-0 loss to Newcastle United at the weekend, the Gunners will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on reigning Italian champions Inter in a Champions League clash.

Arsenal sporting director Edu is to leave in a huge blow for the Gunners, set to join Evangelos Marinakis’ group of clubs which includes Nottingham Forest.

The Brazilian rejoined the club he used to play for from 2001-05 in 2019 as technical director and stepped up to sporting director in November 2022.

The 46-year-old has been credited with securing big signings of players such as Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, while his connections in his home country helped snap up the previously unknown Gabriel Martinelli.

The Daily Mail report that talks have been held between Edu and the Arsenal hierarchy but the Brazilian has decided to move on.

The Independent have since reported that he is making a surprise move to link up with the Marinakis network of Forest, Oympiacos and Rio Ave.

The unexpected move is reportedly driven by Edu wanting to become CEO at Arsenal and being offered that position at the Marinakis-owned group.

Edu was alongside Mikel Arteta in September as the Spaniard signed a new contract with the club and spoke about the long-term future under the manager.

‘We are really happy that Mikel has signed a new long-term contract,’ said the Brazilian.

‘It’s a very positive and proud moment for everyone at the club and an important part of what we’re all working towards.

‘Mikel has shown his qualities since the very first day he joined us, not only as a football manager, but as a person with wonderful values.

‘You have to be very strong on your ideas, what you believe, what is good for the club, what is good for the future of the club.

‘For me, there are some elements in football which I will always give a lot of attention. When I joined, I looked at the squad balance, the positions, the age of the group. There are three elements that you have to be really aware of.

‘First of all, we have to see the age of the player. Then you have to see the salary of the player. And third you have to see the performance of the player.

‘If you have a player over 26 or 27 years, you need attention. If his salary is high, you need attention. And if he is not performing, you are dead.

‘Let’s come back… If you have a player, 27 years old or 28, on a big salary, but he is performing, you can accept it. What you cannot accept is if you have those three elements and the player is over 28.

‘You start to become uncomfortable and it is better for you to move them on – because maybe this player is blocking someone younger, an asset who could help you.

‘When I came to Arsenal, I saw all the squad, with respect, almost everyone was over 26, 27, on big salaries and not performing. If you have those three elements, which club in the world wants to come here and buy one of our players? No-one.

The Arsenal sporting director, Edu, is to leave the club and looks likely to join the network of clubs spearheaded by Evangelos Marinakis, the owner of Nottingham Forest.

Edu’s shock departure will bring to an end five years in Arsenal’s senior management and means Mikel Arteta will lose one of his major allies. The pair enjoy a strong relationship and Arsenal will need too recalibrate when the Brazilian moves on. The timescale of his departure remains unclear.

Arsenal have become title challengers since their former midfielder rejoined the club, initially as technical director, in July 2019. He was heavily involved in Arteta’s arrival five months later and grew in influence after Raul Sanllehi, their head of football, departed in August 2020. Despite hits and misses early in his tenure, Edu has become regarded as integral to an aggressive, effective transfer policy that saw the likes of Martin Ødegaard, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhães, Gabriel Jesus and Declan Rice arrive to transform the profile of Arsenal’s squad.

There have been frustrations in more recent windows – the lack of genuine backups to Ødegaard or Bukayo Saka and an ongoing uncertainty over their centre-forward position the primary issues – although there is no indication that this is responsible for Edu’s imminent departure. His bonds with key members of Arsenal’s hierarchy are understood to extend beyond the friendship with Arteta. Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League after a patchy, injury-struck start to the season in which they have rarely recaptured their free-flowing best form of the Arteta era.

Now Edu is being lined up to take a senior role in Marinakis’ group, potentially in a position involving recruitment oversight. Forest, Olympiacos and the Portuguese side Rio Ave are the three clubs currently under the 57-year-old’s control.

Edu was director of football at Corinthians after ending his playing career and, before returning to Arsenal, had been team coordinator for Brazil’s national team. The 46-year-old’s lack of experience at the sharp end of European football administration had appeared a concern at the outset but he is now poised for a new challenge working for the ambitious and controversial Marinakis, whose Forest team have been the season’s surprise package and currently sit third in the top flight.

Arsenal sporting director Edu is reportedly set to leave the north London club.

The Brazilian has been Mikel Arteta‘s right-hand man since the manager’s appointment in 2019. He became Arsenal‘s technical director months before Arteta arrived and transitioned to the sporting director role three years later.

Edu has played a key part in Arsenal‘s successful recruitment strategy under Arteta. David Raya, Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard have all been smash hits since signing for the Gunners, who also pipped Manchester City to Declan Rice’s signature last year.

According to The Daily Mail, Edu has taken the decision himself to leave the Emirates Stadium. Changes to responsibility areas among senior figures at the club may have played their part in his departure, though the specifics are currently unclear and more light is expected to be shed on the situation over the next 24 hours.

Arteta is certain to be asked about Edu’s predicament during his press conference on Tuesday, the day before Arsenal play AC Milan at the San Siro in a mouth-watering Champions League showdown.

Edu has been a towering figure during Arteta’s time at the club, and he is widely considered to be one of the best sporting directors in world football.

The 46-year-old spent five seasons at Arsenal as a midfield player, starring alongside the likes of Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira during the ‘Invincibles’ season and becoming a full Brazilian international.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown, who shared a dressing room with Edu, talked up his technical director appointment in 2019. “He understands this role and he understands the expectancy at Arsenal,” explained the former centre-back.

“He cannot really affect it on the training ground, but he will be able to address things with the processes at the club. He is a great guy who was also greatly underestimated, to be honest. It was a big loss when he left the football club because there was an element of class to him. I am pleased that the club has recognised that.”

Edu played 127 games for Arsenal before spending four years at Valencia and returning to Brazilian club Corinthians, who gave him his senior breakthrough in 1998.

Before joining up with the Gunners in retirement, Edu served as Corinthians’ director of football, assisted Iran boss Carlos Quieroz during the 2014 World Cup, and spent three years as Brazil’s general coordinator.

Intriguing to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United’s win against Arsenal.

The comments from neutrals especially telling…

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion though, the politics entirely absent, just concentrating on matters on the pitch.
