  • Athletes in $2.8 billion college lawsuit tell judge they want to create a players’ association

Athletes in $2.8 billion college lawsuit tell judge they want to create a players’ association

The athletes whose lawsuit against the NCAA is primed to pave the way for schools to pay them directly also want a players’ association to represent them in the complex contract negotiations that have overtaken the sport.

Grant House, Sedona Prince and Nya Harrison wrote to the judge overseeing what’s known as the House settlement, saying that although they are generally happy with the terms of the proposed settlement “there still remains a critical need for structural changes to protect athletes and prevent the failures of the past.”

That, they said, would be a players’ association, which they believe will help their voices be better heard as the NCAA and its schools move toward a system to share hundreds of millions in TV and ticket revenue with players.

The players said an association would help standardize name-image-likeness (NIL) contracts to establish minimum payments and health protections “and to create an ecosystem where athletes can thrive.”

“While professional leagues include athletes in these decisions through their respective players’ associations, the college system continues to prevent our players’ association from representing us at the decision-making tables,” the letter said.

The settlement, with a price tag of $2.8 billion that will be distributed over the next 10 years to players both past and present, does not address whether athletes should be considered employees of the schools. That’s an issue the NCAA is asking Congress to prevent for fear the costs could wreck college sports.

The NCAA did not immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press seeking comment Tuesday.

Earlier this year, the head of the National College Players Association confirmed that a licensing organization that works with the NFL Players’ Association had emailed thousands of college football players, encouraging them to join the NCPA. Separately, the chairman of another group trying to organize college athletes, athletes.org, said it already had some 4,000 members. The players who wrote the letter said they wanted to work with athletes.org.

A hearing to approve the settlement is set for April 7. The request could shape how U.S. Judge Claudia Wilken views the settlement’s long-term chances of succeeding, but plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler said the letter was an endorsement of the settlement and he doesn’t expect it to impact the agreement.

“All three of these athletes fully support approval of the settlement but wanted to express their additional views that a players’ association is also desirable,” Kessler said. “I salute their devotion to these issues and their fellow college athletes.”

Whether college athletes can ever be considered school employees is a thorny topic. There are multiple issues in front of the National Labor Relations Board, including a complaint against USC and the Pac-12; a unionization effort by the men’s basketball team at Dartmouth; an unfair labor complaint against Notre Dame; and a federal lawsuit in Pennsylvania filed by former Villanova football player Trey Johnson.

All of it could lead to college athletes being granted employee status, though court battles are assured.

  • Big South-OVC Football Association Scores and Standings: Week 9

Big South-OVC Football Association Scores and Standings: Week 9

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – No. 6 SEMO headlines the Big South-OVC Football Association, but two other teams may find themselves ranked Monday.

Here’s how each team fared in Week 9, and what’s next:

    • 1. No. 8 SEMO (5-0, 8-1 overall)
      • Week 9 result: 30-24 home win over Gardner-Webb

SEMO didn‘t win by much, but they won, keeping the Redhawks undefeated at home. Paxton DeLaurents 312 yards paired with Cole Ruble’s 122 yards rushing (career high), was just enough for a severely-injured SEMO to slip by Gardner-Webb. The Redhawks now get a much-needed bye week, before a road trip to Lindenwood.

    • 2. No. 25 Tennessee State (3-1, 6-2 overall)
      • Tennessee State did not play Week 9

Tennessee State had its bye week, Week 9, and it probably couldn’t have come at a better time. The Tigers have fresh legs as they prepare to host UT Martin, Saturday, for a critical conference matchup. It is possible that both teams will enter this game ranked next week.

    • 3. UT Martin (3-1, 5-3 overall)
      • Week 9 result: 52-17 home win over Eastern Illinois

UT Martin did allow a lot of yardage, but the Skyhawks more than made up for it with several turnovers, and an equally electric offense of their own. The Skyhawks will more than likely be ranked tomorrow, after four straight wins. UT Martin faces Tennessee State in Nashville next week.

    • 4. Lindenwood (3-2, 4-5 overall)
      • Week 9 result: 49-38 home win over Western Illinois

Seven touchdowns was enough for Lindenwood to secure a win on Homecoming. Steve Hall had 259 rushing yards and four touchdowns, Saturday. The Lions head to Tennessee Tech next weekend.

    • 5. Tennessee Tech (3-2, 3-5 overall)
      • Week 9 result: 28-23 home win over Charleston Southern

Tennessee Tech held off Charleston Southern 28-23, Saturday. Dylan Laible threw for 175 yards and two scores, to give the Golden Eagles a winning record in conference. The Golden Eagles host Lindenwood next weekend.

    • 6. Western Illinois (2-2, 3-5 overall)
      • Week 9 result: 38-49 road loss to Lindenwood

The Leathernecks weren’t able to match pace with Lindenwood, Saturday. The bright spot was Nate Lamb, who threw for 564 yards and five touchdowns. Western Illinois heads to Charleston next Saturday, to face in-state rival, and now conference rival, Eastern Illinois.

    • 7. Gardner-Webb (1-3, 3-5 overall)
      • Week 9 result: 30-24 road loss to No. 6 SEMO

Gardner-Webb nearly took down this conference‘s goliath, SEMO. The Bulldogs never went down by more than a touchdown, but they were unable to come through late in the fourth quarter, when it mattered the most. Gardner-Webb now heads back east to South Carolina, for a road game against Charleston Southern next Saturday.

    • 8. Eastern Illinois (0-4, 1-7 overall)
      • Week 9 result: 17-52 road loss to Eastern Illinois

Eastern Illinois took a beating against UT Martin. The Panthers were picked at No. 2 in the preseason poll behind the Skyhawks, but there was a clear gap in quality Saturday. Eastern Illinois hosts in-state rival Western Illinois next week.

    • 9. Charleston Southern (0-5, 1-7 overall)
      • Week 9 result: 23-28 road loss to Tennessee Tech

Like they did against the Redhawks, Charleston Southern put up a strong fight until the end. Nonetheless, the Buccaneers are 1-7. They’ll host rivals Gardner-Webb next week.

The 3rd Cook Islands Games Athletics Competition, held on October 11th and 12th, 2024 in Nikao, saw 500 athletes compete across 109 events. Athletics was part of the two week multi sport event will featuring, rugby, netball and traditional canoe racing. The event aims to showcase local talent amongst the Cook Islands brining the 15 Islands together after the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The event was a result of collaboration between Athletics Cook Islands, Cook Islands Sports, and the Oceania Athletics Association, providing a platform for athletes to compete at a national level.

A total of 381 medals were awarded, and 40 officials oversaw the event. Athletes participated in Open, Masters, and Under 18 categories. The World Athletics ranking meet featured on the Global Calendar. The Cook Islands joins 6 other Federations in the Area to have their National Championships globally.

    Three national records were broken:
    •        Kingston Pupuke-Robati in the Under 18 Men’s Shotput with a throw of 15.50 m
    •        Metuaiviivitoa Herman in the Open Men’s Discus with a throw of 45.00m

Prior to the competition Athletes Cook Islands hosted training sessions to help athletes maximised the opportunity to prepare for the Championships.

President of Athletics Cook Islands Simone Fe’ao:
We had an epic 2 days full of athletics. The weather looked like it was going to make it hard for us but after a short burst of sideways rain the weather cleared and we had some brilliant competition. Some new talent identified which bodes well for the future of our sport

In addition to some great athlete performances, we had some great achievements as a federation. We were able to raise the standard this year with the inclusion of photo finish and electronic timing through our partnership with Oceania Athletics and have this event now included on the WA Global Calendar as a World Ranking Competition. Following our training academy earlier this year, we had 6 local officials complete their practical components and get signed off for the NAR certification.

This is a firm foundation for us to continue to build our infrastructure as we work towards hosting the Minigames in 2029.”

For Yvonne Mullins, Executive Director, Oceania Athletics, this was her first time at the Cook Islands Games, but in her words ‘hopefully more to come’!

“It was a great two days of competition, with athletes competing for their own regions. There was certainly rivalry between athletes who are usually on the same team, but there was also a sense of comradery. I have no doubt that the strength of Athletics in the Cook Islands over the years leading into the Pacific Mini Games in 2029, will hinge on this Cook Islands Games, where more rivalry will lead to more competitions and more great results. The Games, I hope will fuel local athletes to get more involved in athletics.”

You can relive the action of the event by rewatching the live stream or viewing the photo galleries on the Athletics Cook Islands Facebook Page.
