    NEW YORK — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Monday suggested that migrants who are in the U.S. and have committed murder did so because “it’s in their genes.” There are, he added, “a lot of bad genes in our country right now.”

    It’s the latest example of Trump alleging that immigrants are changing the hereditary makeup of the U.S. Last year, he evoked language once used by Adolf Hitler to argue that immigrants entering the U.S. illegally are “poisoning the blood of our country.”

    Trump made the comments Monday in a radio interview with conservative host Hugh Hewitt. He was criticizing his Democratic opponent for the 2024 presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris, when he pivoted to immigration, citing statistics that the Department of Homeland Security says include cases from his administration.

    “How about allowing people to come through an open border, 13,000 of which were murderers? Many of them murdered far more than one person,” Trump said. “And they’re now happily living in the United States. You know, now a murderer — I believe this: it’s in their genes. And we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now. Then you had 425,000 people come into our country that shouldn’t be here that are criminals.”

    Trump’s campaign said his comments regarding genes were about murderers.

    “He was clearly referring to murderers, not migrants. It’s pretty disgusting the media is always so quick to defend murderers, rapists, and illegal criminals if it means writing a bad headline about President Trump,” Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign’s national press secretary, said in a statement.

    U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released immigration enforcement data to Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales last month about the people under its supervision, including those not in ICE custody. That included 13,099 people who were found guilty of homicide and 425,431 people who are convicted criminals.

    But those numbers span decades, including during Trump’s administration. And those who are not in ICE custody may be detained by state or local law enforcement agencies, according to the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE.

    The Harris campaign declined to comment.

    Asked during her briefing with reporters on Monday about Trump’s “bad genes” comment, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “That type of language, it’s hateful, it’s disgusting, it’s inappropriate, it has no place in our country.”

    The Biden administration has stiffened asylum restrictions for migrants, and Harris, seeking to address a vulnerability as she campaigns, has worked to project a tougher stance on immigration.

    The former president and Republican nominee has made illegal immigration a central part of his 2024 campaign, vowing to stage the largest deportation operation in U.S. history if elected. He has a long history of comments maligning immigrants, including referring to them as “animals” and “killers,” and saying that they spread diseases.

    Last month, during his debate with Harris, Trump falsely claimed Haitian immigrants in Ohio were abducting and eating pets.

    As president, he questioned why the U.S. was accepting immigrants from Haiti and Africa rather than Norway and told four congresswomen, all people of color and three of whom were born in the U.S., to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

    CAMBRIDGE – Week 5 of the Illinois 8-Man Football Association season was strange for the Amboy-LaMoille-Ohio team.

    After playing its Week 4 game on Saturday, the Clippers turned around and traveled to Cambridge to play Ridgewood on Thursday, Sept. 26.

    The other strange part was the Clippers lost, 34-22, to Ridgewood (who had the same turnaround as Amboy) for their first loss since the 8-Man state championship in 2022.

    “I told the kids after the game, ‘Don’t let this one game define the rest of our season. We still have everything ahead of us to achieve,” Clippers coach Scott Payne said. “We know what we need to work on now.’ They exploited a couple of things we need to fix and we’re going to fix them this week.

    “A loss is only bad if you don’t learn from it. That’s exactly what we’re going to do. We’re going to learn from it and move on.”

    Scheduled for four meetings this season and last, Amboy had won the first three.

    Being a tried-and-true cliché that it is hard to beat a team three times, let alone four, and the Clippers struggling to get a running game going, they trailed 16-0 after the first quarter and 16-8 at halftime.

    “It is difficult to beat a team four times in a row. It was a tough game. They came out and outplayed us. They took it to us,” Payne said. “It’s a tough environment to play down there. They just had a better night than we did.

    “We made quite a few mistakes up front throughout the game. We weren’t picking up certain blocking schemes. They had a really good game plan against us. They got us down early and we couldn’t come back from being down 16-0. We had a couple of costly penalties in the second half.

    “It’s one of those nights where things didn’t go our way. You’re going to have nights like that.”

    While the running game couldn’t get past the trenches, senior quarterback Eddie Jones was asked to throw the ball more, which led to him finishing the Week 5 8-Man West Division game with two touchdowns.

    Payne said the entire team understood what a loss means and the wakeup call that should come after.

    “A loss like this wakes you up. I wouldn’t say we were on cruise control or anything like that. We had a good week of practice and worked on stuff we needed to work on,” Payne said. “We had a good game plan going in. I don’t know if it was a short week since we played on Thursday night. I don’t know what it was.

    “It didn’t matter what we tried to do, it just didn’t go our way. It was bound for something like that to happen to us eventually. It’s a tough loss, but we still have four games left on our schedule.”

    The first game, Week 6, is a conference game against Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland.

    Payne and the Clippers have watched tape and have scouted the Falcons talent.

    A wide receiver who is going to garner the attention of the Clippers top-two defensive backs, Jones and junior Cody Winn, and a quarterback who likes to run and has a good arm as he threw for six touchdowns against West Prairie two weeks ago.

    “We watched film of Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland on Friday. I gave them the weekend off. I told them to forget about football for a few days,” Payne said. “We came back Monday and it’s all about the Flanagan game. The kids are excited. I’m pretty sure they’re chomping at the bit to get back on the field Friday night.”

    JD Sports’ UK business has been hit by falling sales after disruption in the Red Sea stalled deliveries and the cold, wet spring reduced demand for camping kit and clothing.

    The retail group, which owns Millets and Blacks in the UK, said sales at the outdoor kit chain were down 5.3% in the six months to 3 August as “key product lines” had been delayed by Houthi attacks off Yemen delaying or rerouting shipping and the early date of Easter fell outside the camping season for the first time since 2018.

    It said poor weather compounded the issue, reducing demand for seasonal outdoor living products such as tents and camping equipment.

    The chilly and wet weather also hit the group’s main JD sportswear chain in the UK, where sales at established stores were down 4.6% in what the group described as a “challenging and often volatile UK market”.

    JD said discounting in the market had soared after “unfavourable spring and early summer weather conditions, dampened footfall and full price demand for seasonal [clothing]”.

    While strong sales of replica football kits during the men’s European Championship helped boost top-line performance, the reliance on these low-margin items hit profits – which were down 14%.

    JD Sports shares fell 4.5% in early trading on Wednesday.

    The poor UK performance was offset by strong sales growth in Europe and the US, which is now JD’s biggest single market. Group sales rose 5.2% to £5bn and pre-tax profit was up 64% to £126.3m for the half.

    The group said it still expected to hit profit expectations of between £995m and £1bn for the full year but it said foreign exchange shifts had hit profits by £6m in the first six months of the year and would bring a £20m hit in the second half.

    Régis Schultz, the chief executive of JD Sports, said: “The context to this progress has been a promotional and competitive marketplace, and continued economic uncertainty.

    Despite difficulties at some key brands including Nike, Schultz said he remained “confident that the global sportswear market, and in particular the athleisure space within it, has years of structural growth ahead of it, with favourable trends like casualisation and active lifestyles continuing”.

    The beauty standards in our antiaging, pro-thinness culture can feel impossibly high, so it’s no wonder that so many of us deal with bad body image days—yep, even Olympic athlete and Sports Illustrated cover model Ilona Maher.

    The rugby bronze medalist, who just returned from the 2024 Paris Games and is currently competing in the newest season of Dancing with the Stars, has been super vulnerable about her own self-acceptance journey. She’s shared a photo of her cellulite with her followers to prove “we all have it,” posted a friendly reminder that “there isn’t one body type for female athletes,” and taken down trolls who criticized her body mass index.

    But that doesn’t mean Maher always feels great about herself—and yesterday was one of those off days. “Just keeping it real with you, so I wanted to just let you know I’m not feeling too body confident right now,” Maher admitted in a TikTok video posted on Sunday. “But that’s okay.” In moments like these (which, she noted, are completely “normal”), Maher said she usually leans on three simple strategies to lift her spirits—and we’re here for all of them.

    Her first mental hack? “I try to remember what my body does for me,” she said. That could look like going on a run, she explained, lifting weights, or dancing her heart out (which she’s been doing a lot of on DWTS lately). Basically, it’s about celebrating all the cool things your arms, legs, stomach, whatever can do—rather than fixating on how they look.

    The second thing she tells herself: That her body is always changing. Most people don’t have the same physique they had 10, 5, maybe even two years ago—and that’s totally normal. “Whether we’re in a different part of our cycle, whether we’re eating more, eating less, working out more—I’m not working out as much I usually do, so that’s why my body’s changing a little bit,” Maher added. Beyond lifestyle shifts, though, bodies can outgrow themselves simply because that’s just a natural part of getting older, as SELF previously reported. And while lots of us (including Maher) may forget this reality—or struggle to accept it—experts say it’s important to remind yourself that just as you’re evolving, your body is too.

    Finally, Maher said she’s learning to give herself grace whenever that mean, critical voice starts to mess with her self-esteem. “It’s hard for me in this time,” Maher explained, noting that she’s still adjusting—physically and mentally—to her post-Olympics routine and new DWTS schedule. Through all these changes, Maher said she’s committed to showing herself kindness (which, BTW, is a therapist-approved way to buffer the mental health consequences of self-criticism).

    And for anyone else struggling with moments of insecurity, Maher has one final message: “Take a breath,” she said in her TikTok. “Remind yourself you’re beautiful. It’s okay if you’re going through [this].”
