  • It’s almost Halloween. That means it’s time for a bat beauty contest

It’s almost Halloween. That means it’s time for a bat beauty contest

PORTLAND, Ore. — Move over, Fat Bear Week. A bat beauty contest is now stepping up to the plate.

The Bureau of Land Management has hosted the online competition since 2019 to raise awareness about the animal’s ecological importance. The federal agency posts photos of bats on its Facebook and Instagram accounts, and then asks people to vote for the cutest one. The bats are part of wild populations living on public lands, and are photographed by agency staff.

The first round of voting began Thursday and pitted a Townsend’s big-eared bat named “Sir Flaps-A-Lot” from Utah against a hoary bat fittingly named “Hoary Potter” from Oregon. The contest coincides with the start of Bat Week, during which bat experts across the country and the world hold educational events celebrating the only flying mammal.

The defining feature of a Townsend’s big-eared bat is, unsurprisingly, its ears, which can reach a length of 1.5 inches (38 millimeters). The large ears funnel sound into the ear canal, provide lift during flight and help with temperature regulation, the Bureau of Land Management said in its Facebook post presenting the first two contestants.

Hoary bats, meanwhile, are known for swift flight and wrapping themselves in their own tails to mimic leaves and hide from predators, the agency said. Due to this attribute, it estimated Hoary Potter would be “the perfect candidate for seeker on this year’s Quidditch team,” referring to the game in Harry Potter that is played on flying brooms.

Neither species are federally listed as endangered. However, Oregon has included them on its list of species needing conservation attention, and Utah has done the same for the Townsend’s big-eared bat.

Emma Busk, the BLM wildlife technician who photographed Hoary Potter, said bats around the world play a key role in the environment by eating insects and pollinating flowers and fruits. But they’re increasingly facing the threats of habitat loss, disease and light pollution, and are often misunderstood as scary disease carriers, she said.

“There’s a lot of fear and misconceptions around bats,” she said, noting that people often associate rabies with the animal. “But less than 1% of all bat populations actually carry rabies, and the bat-to-human disease transmission is actually really low.”

Busk is rooting for Hoary Potter in the hopes that an Oregon bat will win the beauty contest for a third time. Last year, “William ShakespEAR,” a female Townsend’s big-eared bat from southern Oregon whom Busk also photographed, claimed the crown. And in 2022, a canyon bat named “Barbara” similarly hailing from southern Oregon was declared the winner.

“Our effort every year is to just collect as much data as we can on the species in our resource area, so that we do know how to better protect them moving forward,” Busk said.

The beauty contest will continue in rounds over the next week. It’s timed to wrap up on Halloween next Thursday, when the winner will be announced.

  • Alaffia Founder Launches Second Beauty And Lifestyle Brand At Whole Foods

Alaffia Founder Launches Second Beauty And Lifestyle Brand At Whole Foods

Alaffia founder Olowo-n’djo Tchala is continuing his mission to preserve African traditions and empower women on the continent with new beauty and lifestyle brand Ayéya.

Ayéya’s focus on sustainability sets it apart from Alaffia, which Tchala left in 2022. Describing itself a purveyor of ethically crafted goods that bring “economic independence,” the brand’s products, including foaming hand soaps, bath bombs, whipped body butter, shampoo bars, conditioner bars and laundry, dishwashing, all-purpose, bathroom and glass cleaner tablets, are 90% plastic free, according to Tchala. Its prices run from $2.99 to $19.99.

Ayéya extends from personal care products to a lifestyle range featuring baskets. The brand plans to release a new product every quarter for the next two to three years. Powder versions of its foaming hand soap, all-purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner and glass cleaner are slated to hit the market early next year.

Ayéya’s soaps and bath bombs rolled out to Whole Foods stores nationwide in the United States and Canada last Friday. Its home products will be arriving at the grocer in November. The brand will land in Whole Foods locations in the United Kingdom stores in March, and Ayéya has a line of bar soaps, bath bombs and bath salts exclusive to Sprouts Farmers Market slated for a November debut. The brand is available on Whole Foods owner Amazon, too.

Alaffia and Ayéya founder Olowo-n’djo Tchala

Alaffia, which Tchala started in 2003 with Prairie Rose Hyde, has a long-standing relationship with Whole Foods, and Tchala connected with the grocer last year about Ayéya because he determined the brand and it share values. He says, “Those values are essentially that you have a supply chain that’s slave labor-free and also that you have product that’s clean for the customers who are using the product…You have to align your values with organizations that see things similarly to you.”

Similar to Ayéya, Alaffia began by selling baskets and textiles along with personal care products such as its signature African Black Soap handcrafted by women in West African cooperatives. Tchala is from Togo. He says Ayéya departs from Alaffia in that it has complete control over the entire supply chain.

“This vertical integration from manufacturer to consumer allows full transparency and respect for traditions as well as reinvestment in social impact initiatives like access to clean water and mitigation of domestic violence,” he explains, adding it’s extended “our ethical supply chain, but, at the same time, is creating something new and different with relevancy for today’s world.”

To spread the word, Ayéya’s marketing strategy is pursuing press coverage and influencer collaborations. The brand is currently working with six influencers who Tchala calls ambassadors and expects to increase that number in the coming months. Whole Foods has helped out by creating video on Ayéya’s backstory for its website.

Ayéya’s soaps and bath bombs rolled out to Whole Foods stores nationwide in the United States and Canada last Friday.

Tchala declined to discuss how much it cost to launch Ayéya, but discloses the brand has received angel investment. Alaffia previously raised over $10 million in venture capital funding, per the financial information resource Pitch Book. New Voices Fund, the VC firm established by Richelieu Dennis, co-founder and former CEO of SheaMoisture, is among its investors.

Tchala says he left Alaffia because its direction was no longer in sync with his conscience. Today, he enthuses that he’s more excited than ever about the “pursuit for human rights” through Ayéya.

“I can take it to the next level because it is about the whole house now,” says Tchala. “It’s not just about your shampoos, it’s also about your laundry. Every part of the house we can be a part of, and that means that we’re going to have a real conversation about how to better our world together.”

  • Yellowjackets Beauty Sammi Hanratty in Two-Piece Workout Gear Says “Smile”

Yellowjackets Beauty Sammi Hanratty in Two-Piece Workout Gear Says “Smile”

Sammi Hanratty, known for her role on Yellowjackets, is embracing a healthy and active lifestyle, even during pregnancy. In a recent Instagram post, she looked radiant in her two-piece workout gear, showing off her glowing body and positive energy. Captioning the post with a simple “Smile,” Sammi gave her fans a glimpse into her self-care and wellness journey. Here’s a closer look at her diet, fitness, and self-care habits.

Hanratty might play a cannibal on Yellowjackets, but in real life she doesn’t touch animal products. ”Everything I’m eating is Beyond Meat, just because I’m vegan, so they just reassure me that every time blood sprays in my face, ‘Don’t worry! It’s vegan!’” she told The Daily Beast.

Sammi doesn’t drink alcohol. “Reflecting on my sobriety and how far I’ve come. These events are so fun but can also be stressful. It’s times like the last week where alcohol is constantly starring me in the face begging to touch my lips again. Every time that I choose sparkling water or a mocktail, I’m filled with the reminder that I’m choosing my health, happiness, and peace. It’s not always easy but it’s extremely important. I’m so thankful to those who are constantly supporting me and it’s always so beautiful to meet fellow sober creators♥️There are more of us than people know. If you’re struggling know I see you and I love you!” she captioned a recent post.

“I’m vegan and allergic to everything,” Sammi told Interview. If she was in the wilderness, like her character, she doesn’t think she could survive. “The bigger problem is that I’m allergic to everything, and I don’t think the wilderness does gluten-free,” she shared. “Unless I have a foraging book with me, I don’t think I would make it.”

Sammi is a fan of TRX  workouts. “These are some videos from my current workouts💪🏻 since going vegan my workouts have improved greatly🙌🏻 I was always told the opposite would happen but I feel stronger and healthier,” she captioned this Instagram image.

Sammi is a fan of HIIT workouts. “Time to get back into my workout out routine. I’m going to @TrainingMate everydayyy. what is your workout routine?? A unique 45-minute circuit of high-intensity interval training group fitness class combining cardio & resistance exercises,” she tweeted. There is lots of research backing up the benefits of HIIT workouts, including body fat reduction, improved cardiovascular function, and mental health. It is also time effective.

Beauty buffs are shopping for cosmetics with the three Rs in mind: reduce, reuse and refill

Cosmetic brands are increasingly trying to get on a greener path with beauty products that won’t fill up landfills.Andre Penner/The Canadian Press

Being a beauty buff and doing your part for the planet can often seem at odds with one another. All those tubes, pots and bottles storing everything from fragrances to foundation have flooded landfills for decades.

Cosmetics, skincare and scent companies are attempting to course correct and get on a greener path by offering refillable products. Options range from the luxe (Dior Addict’s tactile, logo-wrapped silver case concealing a mirror) to the more approachable (Cheekbone’s versatile makeup-holding rounds).

Toronto-based makeup artist Wendy Rorong says refillable cosmetics are a boon for her business. “I go through a lot of products so I’m so happy that brands are starting to sell only refills for my favourites,” she says. “It’s definitely a more economical solution, but also more sustainable.”

The aesthetic potential of refill packaging also allows cosmetics companies to pursue collectable artistic and brand collaborations, such as Guerlain’s new limited edition Guerlain x Pucci collection including a lipstick case for its recently relaunched Rouge G. The groovy reusable tube looks like something you’d dream of stumbling upon at an estate sale in 40 years.

It’s not just blush, eyeshadow and brow pencils that can be refilled these days. Favourite fragrances can be topped up in store as can all manner of skincare products including Youth To The People’s Kale Superfood Face Cleanser and Charlotte Tilbury’s supermodel-approved Magic Cream. The dense moisturizer’s refill resembles a coffee pod that pops into the cream’s rose gold-lidded jar.

The London-based brand’s airbrush powder, which Rorong describes as a makeup artist’s “kit staple,” is a must-buy on her list this fall. She notes that items like this aren’t only appealing because of their eco-minded functionality, but also because they don’t take up as much room in a makeup bag, which is especially helpful for travel. “Less waste and less weight,” she says, “is always good for me.”

  • Green and clean beauty: Skincare routine with Patanjali

Green and clean beauty: Skincare routine with Patanjali

Lately, with busy schedules and hectic lifestyles, we neglect our skin and fail to cater to its needs. While several skincare enthusiasts do have a lengthy routine, it is usually filled with toxins. Be it a 10-step routine, or a simple 3-step one, herbal and Ayurveda products are always better for the skin. Using a potent and balanced blend of essential natural herbs and nutrients, Patanjali’s green and clean personal care range helps elevate skin’s health by several notches. Its carefully formulated concoctions help restore skin’s balance and reveal healthy, hydrated, and radiant skin.

    Face Wash:

The first step towards taking care of your skin topically is cleansing it. One should always opt for a gentle cleanser that helps eliminate dirt and oil without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier. Patanjali offers a wide range of face washes to choose from for different skin types and goals. The Patanjali Saundarya face wash while cleansing the skin can also be used for treating several skin ailments such as acne and skin maturity. Additionally, the cleanser rejuvenates and revitalizes the skin, making it appear youthful and supple.

On the flip side, the Patanjali Saundarya Neem-Tulsi face wash has been carefully formulated to take care of oily and acne-prone skin. Formulated with nature’s natural exfoliants Neem and Tulsi, the face wash helps remove acne-causing bacteria. Meanwhile, Aloe Vera soothes and calms the skin.

    Face Scrub:

Face scrubs help eliminate dirt and grime by exfoliating the pores deeply. Every once in a while, using a face scrub helps restore the skin’s natural glow and rejuvenate it. Patanjali Aloe vera and Apricot Face Scrub effectively clears dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and reveals a brighter complexion.

26-year-old wins Miss Universe Singapore 2024, transgender beauty queen makes top 5, Lifestyle News

Just a short distance away from the hustle and bustle of the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, a glamorous event had attendees on the edge of their seats.

As two beautiful ladies stood on stage, facing each other and holding hands, everyone waited with bated breath.

“The title of Miss Universe Singapore 2024 goes to…Charlotte Chia!”

The audience burst into applause at this announcement.

Charlotte, a 26-year-old public relations account executive, was crowned Miss Universe Singapore 2024 after a two-hour finale gala on Sunday (Sept 22), which consisted of the swimsuit and evening gown segments for the top 15 contestants and a Q&A segment for the top five.

She also received the Miss Body Beautiful award earlier that evening, alongside Miss Congeniality Seraphina Yong and Fan Favourite Amber Li.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Charlotte thanked her mother and grandmother for their support, dedicating her win to them.

“I am so grateful, so thankful for the opportunity. I will do my best to live up to this responsibility,” she said.

Although her 97-year-old grandmother could not make it to the ceremony as she had caught a cold, Charlotte’s mother – her biggest cheerleader that night – made her presence known to all as she celebrated her daughter’s win.

Speaking to AsiaOne that evening, Charlotte shared that she had not expected the win at all as she felt everyone in the top 5 was deserving of it.

She admitted that when her name was called, she completely blacked out.

“My ears have been blocked lately, so initially I thought I heard it wrong. But I saw my mum jumping up and down, she was [like a] disco ball,” she said.

“I was so touched by all the support from the crowd. When the presenter came and asked me ‘how are you feeling?’, I was like: ‘I can’t even express [it]’. I was just trying not to burst into tears at that point.”

Charlotte also shared that she was going to video call her grandmother afterwards to convey the good news and her gratitude.

“The person I am today is because of her influence, this win is hers,” she said with tears in her eyes.

When asked what message she would like to put out there as Miss Universe Singapore 2024, Charlotte said: “I acknowledge that this isn’t just a crown, it’s not just a title. This is a job, it’s a role, it’s a responsibility.”

“So, I would like to… keep myself accountable by putting it out there that while I’m grateful for this title, I’m going to work hard for it, and I’m going to definitely use my voice to make an impact for what I believe in.”

    ‘I won my people’s hearts’

During the gala, an overwhelming majority of attendees could be seen holding LED signs and chanting one name: Qatrisha.

Many of them were friends and supporters from the queer community, including drag queens dressed to the nines.

Qatrisha Zairyah, 33, has been garnering online attention for being Miss Universe Singapore’s first transgender finalist.

An experienced pageant queen who has taken part in various pageants for transgender women, she exuded poise and elegance throughout the gala and while speaking with AsiaOne.

“Regardless [if I] won or not, at least I won my people’s hearts and was a great representation for them, even [getting into] the top five,” she said.

“It’s a tremendous success for me to be up there for a women’s pageant, I would say.”

The fashion advisor also thanked her supporters for standing by her throughout her pageant journey.

“I am here because of their support and motivational words,” she said.

“I felt so emotional [hearing them cheer] that I teared up backstage… these are my real supporters who followed me throughout my journey.”

Qatrisha added that she is hoping to pursue a career in modelling overseas and further represent Singapore in various ways.

    Role models for the youth

First runner-up Adelene Stanley, who is the founder of local dance academy The Dance Circus, and second runner-up, TV anchor and entrepreneur Olivia Dewi Cinta Higgins, also expressed their gratitude for their supporters and shared their hopes for the future.

Adelene, 29, a single mother to a two-year-old girl, told AsiaOne that she wishes to be a role model for her daughter as well as her students.

“I always tell my baby girl that she’s strong and fearless. She’s why I decided to join this competition.”

“I teach so many young girls in schools… I know they see me as their teacher, but I really want them to learn not just dance from me, but also life lessons,” she added.

Olivia, who is also 29, said that she aims to bring fitness and education to more people around the world.

“I’m going to keep advocating every single day with my small actions… for people to take control of their lives again,” she told AsiaOne.

“I want to start off in my home ground, Singapore, and then go overseas to keep advocating for the spread of knowledge, books and education.”

For now, Olivia plans on indulging in some post-pageant coffee and ice cream before training for her third Hyrox competition this year, which will be held in Hong Kong in November.

‘It’s a passion that her whole family shares,’ Adan continued. ‘I was just a lucky guy that said hi. I didn’t really know who I was saying hi to.’

He further gushed, ‘I just knew, she’s gorgeous. And if I would’ve known, I probably would’ve stuttered my way right out it.’

In regards to her horse riding skills, Banuelos said, ‘She’s very natural, very good at it. All animals, not only horses, love her. Her lifestyle is a lot of fashion and it looks glamorous and this and that, but at heart, she’s a cowgirl.’
