Minimally invasive cardiac surgery: Heart risks for your parents, benefits, lifestyle changes, recovery secrets | Health

A more recent technique called minimally invasive cardiac surgery aims to lessen the trauma connected to open heart surgery. It has several benefits such as less pain, smaller incisions and quicker recovery periods but before agreeing to get this procedure, there are some important considerations to consider.

According to a recent study, many patients who undergo heart surgery won't have to take opioids as a pain medication after they get discharged from the hospital.(Unsplash)

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Shrirang Ranade, Head Of The Department and Consultant – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon at Manipal Hospital in Pune’s Baner, shared, “Small 2-3-inch incisions help a surgeon access the heart during minimally invasive cardiac surgery. When MIS surgery is used instead of standard open-heart surgery, it can effectively treat a variety of heart diseases with less discomfort and faster recovery times. Whereas traditional heart surgery, which involves cutting through the breastbone (sternotomy), minimally invasive heart surgery is usually carried out through tiny incisions between the ribs. This approach reduces scarring and speeds up healing. This method can be used for coronary artery bypass, valve replacement or repair, and specific repairs for congenital heart conditions.”

Overall health and specific heart problems are important considerations for choosing candidature for this type of surgery. Dr Shrirang Ranade revealed, “Not every patient is a candidate for minimally invasive procedures. Factors including the complexity of the heart disease, past cardiac surgeries, and underlying health issues such as obesity or lung conditions can affect the decision. A complete review by a cardiac surgeon is required for choosing the best technique. A shorter hospital stay is one of the key benefits of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. After standard surgery, recovery takes a week or longer, but many patients can return home after a few days. Also, the risk of infection, blood loss, and surgical complications is reduced due to the smaller incisions.”

The expert cautioned, “However, as with any surgery, there are potential risks. These include bleeding, anesthesia-related responses, or problems with the heart or lungs during the surgery. It is important to go through potential risks and benefits in complete detail with the doctors. Most patients recover from minimally invasive cardiac surgery more quickly, returning to their regular activities in a matter of weeks. However, keeping to a provided treatment plan and making lifestyle modifications will be important for maintaining long-term heart health.”

Bringing his expertise to the same, Dr Ved Prakash, Senior Consultant and Head – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Sarvodaya Hospital in Faridabad’s Sector-8, explained, “Minimally invasive heart surgery (MIHS) involves smaller incisions than traditional open-heart surgery. Surgeons use advanced techniques, including small tools and cameras, to perform complex heart procedures. Common procedures include heart valve repair/replacement, coronary artery bypass, and atrial septal defect closure.”

    Benefits over traditional surgery:

    • Smaller Incisions: Typically, incisions are 3-4 inches compared to the 6-8 inch cuts in traditional surgery.
    • Shorter Recovery Time: Recovery is faster, with many patients resuming normal activities in a few weeks.
    • Less Pain and Scarring: The reduced size of incisions leads to less pain and scarring post-surgery.
    • Lower Risk of Infection: Smaller incisions reduce the risk of infection compared to the larger, open incisions in traditional surgery.

    Risks and complications:

Dr Ved Prakash said, “Like any surgery, MIHS carries risks such as infection, bleeding, stroke, or irregular heart rhythms. The risk level depends on your health, age and the specific procedure.”

    Who is a candidate?

According to Dr Ved Prakash, not everyone is a candidate for minimally invasive surgery. Factors such as the complexity of the condition, previous surgeries, or certain health conditions may require traditional open-heart surgery.

    Pre-operative preparation:

Dr Ved Prakash informed, “You will undergo a series of tests, including blood work, imaging and heart function tests, to ensure you’re fit for surgery.”

    Post-surgery recovery:

    • After surgery, you’ll spend some time in the ICU for monitoring. The hospital stay is generally shorter than with open-heart surgery, often around 3-5 days.
    • Full recovery usually takes about 4-6 weeks. You may need cardiac rehabilitation to improve heart function.

    Lifestyle changes after surgery:

Dr Ved Prakash concluded, “Even after a successful surgery, maintaining heart health through diet, exercise, and medications (if prescribed) is crucial. Adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle can prevent future heart problems.”

Air Pollution: Lifestyle Coach Unlocks Benefits Of Kalmegh For Respiratory Health

Luke Coutinho also asks everyone to consult healthcare professionals before using Kalmegh

Delhi recorded the worst air quality at the onset of winter. The primary reasons behind this are the various sources of pollution –  garbage waste, road dust, power plant factory waste, and transport gases. Hence, the need of the hour is a natural remedy that can help cure respiratory problems. Luke Coutinho, a holistic lifestyle coach and nutritionist known for specialising in nutritional science and alternative medicine, shares a post on Instagram talking about respiratory health in Delhi. He recommends consuming a scientifically proven remedy in the picture messages that reads, “This is for Delhi right now and the crazy pollution. What is shared next is not a REPLACEMENT for your allopathy. Kalmegh, scientifically known as Andrographis paniculata, is a traditional medicinal herb widely used in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine systems. We have been using this strategically for patients through lockdown. Before that and till now, every case is bio-individual and hence not shared widely on a social media platform.”

Benefits of Kalmegh, according to the lifestyle coach

    • Anti-inflammatory effects: He writes, “Kalmegh has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory effects, which may help in reducing inflammation in the respiratory tract. Conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can benefit from such properties by alleviating symptoms and improving breathing.”
    • Mucolytic effects: The nutritionist continues, “Some studies suggest that Kalmegh could help in thinning mucus, making it easier to expel from the respiratory system. This can be beneficial for individuals suffering from bronchitis or chronic respiratory infections. This has helped many of our patients and had no effect on a few.”
    • Immune System Support: Luke Kalmegh mentions that Kalmegh is known for its immune-boosting properties due to its active compounds like andrographolide. According to him, a strong immune system can help the body combat respiratory infections, which are often exacerbated by pollution.
    • Prevents oxidative stress: “Kalmegh contains various antioxidants that can neutralise free radicals produced in response to pollution. This action helps protect cells from oxidative stress, which is linked to respiratory diseases and other health issues caused by environmental pollutants,” shares Luke.
    • Elimination of toxins: As per the lifestyle coach, regular consumption of Kalmegh may help the body eliminate toxins accumulated due to exposure to pollutants, thereby protecting respiratory health.
    • Protection against hypersensitivity: He cites research over the years that has indicated that Kalmegh might modulate the body’s immune response and provide protective effects against acute respiratory issues arising from pollution, such as hypersensitivity and inflammation.

    How to consume Kalmegh?

The nutritionist states that Kalmegh can be used by boiling its leaves. However, he mentions consulting an alternative medicine registered doctor for a better recipe and adds, “What we use is the simple capsule, dosage as per bottle and your doctor if needed, the Kalmegh, Organic India brand. There are many other brands, but this is what we have been using. I believe at a time like this, with pollution levels crazy, we need to do all that it takes to help the human body and lungs through this in the safest possible way, over and above what already exists if needed.”

Precautions for using Kalmegh for respiratory health

Luke Coutinho also asks everyone to consult healthcare professionals before using Kalmegh as a treatment option, especially for severe respiratory conditions. He writes, “I usually don’t use my social media to talk about a particular supplement or herbal remedy as it can be blindly misused by people and may not work on some people who are on other medications. Possible contraindications and many herbs and supplements have incomplete research or smartly funded outcomes from research. Speak to your medical allopathy doctors if you want to or must speak to experts, doctors or Ayurveda, especially if you are on treatment. Also discuss and take advice for the age limit according to conditions.”

“Sadly, the only solution is better air and a better environment, but right now, we need to focus on small wins and do what we can to adapt- the power of Kalmegh, andographis paniculata for respiratory health. Be wise, don’t be the herd,” read his caption. He even used a word like “holistic health” while hashtagging his post.

  • Vegetarian Or Pescetarian? Lets Break Down The Benefits And Drawbacks

Vegetarian Or Pescetarian? Lets Break Down The Benefits And Drawbacks

In a world where healthy eating and sustainability are hot topics, plant-based diets are gaining serious momentum. Among the most talked-about options are vegetarianism and pescetarianism, each with its own loyal following. While vegetarianism focuses entirely on plant-based foods, pescetarianism adds seafood to the mix for added nutritional benefits. Both diets are linked to better health, reduced environmental impact, and ethical eating practices, but each has its unique perks and challenges. Whether you’re considering a switch for health reasons or environmental concerns, understanding the differences between these two lifestyles can help you make the choice that’s best for you.

    What Is Vegetarianism?

Going vegetarian means saying goodbye to all kinds of meat, poultry, and fish. Vegetarians stick mostly to veggies, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Some vegetarians also include dairy and eggs (called lacto-ovo vegetarians), while others, like vegans, skip all animal products entirely.

    What Is ‘Pescetarianism’?

The pescetarian diet is close to vegetarianism but adds fish and seafood. While pescetarians skip meat and poultry, they rely on seafood for protein. Like vegetarians, they also enjoy plant-based foods and may add dairy and eggs for variety.

    Nutritional Benefits

    Health Benefits of Vegetarianism

    • Heart Health: Packed with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and legumes, vegetarian diets are full of fibre, antioxidants, and essential nutrients that keep your heart in top shape.
    • Weight Management: Thanks to high-fiber, low-calorie foods, vegetarians often have lower body weights.
    • Disease Prevention: Research shows that vegetarians have lower risks of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and some cancers.

    Health Benefits of Pescetarianism

    • Omega-3 Boost: Fish, especially the fatty kind like salmon and mackerel, is a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for heart and brain health.
    • High-Quality Protein: Seafood delivers all the essential amino acids your body needs, and adding eggs and dairy can round out your protein intake.
    • Micronutrient Perks: Fish and seafood are rich in essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin D, vitamin B12, iodine, and selenium, which can be harder to find in a strictly vegetarian diet.
    Try omega food

    Environmental Impact

Vegetarianism: For those concerned about animal welfare and the environment, vegetarianism often means avoiding the issues tied to animal farming, such as animal welfare challenges and the environmental strain of livestock production.

Pescetarianism: Pescetarians may also have ethical concerns but choose to include fish for its health benefits. However, they need to consider the effects of fishing on marine life and ecosystems and the treatment of fish in aquaculture.

    Potential Drawbacks

    Vegetarianism

    • Nutrient Watch: Vegetarians may need to focus on nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, zinc, calcium, and omega-3s, which aren’t as plentiful in plant foods.
    • Social and Cultural Hurdles: Vegetarianism can sometimes feel challenging in social settings or in cultures where meat plays a big role.

    Pescetarianism

    • Contamination Risks: Some fish contain high levels of mercury or other environmental toxins. Pescetarians need to pick their seafood carefully and keep moderation in mind.
    • Sustainability Issues: Overfishing and some aquaculture practices can reduce the environmental benefits of eating seafood.

    Final Verdict

Both vegetarianism and pescetarianism bring impressive health benefits and are generally kinder to the environment than meat-focused diets. The right choice really depends on what works for your health, values, and lifestyle. Vegetarians get the perks of plant-based nutrition with minimal environmental impact, while pescetarians enjoy the added health boosts from nutrient-rich seafood. Whatever you choose, focusing on whole, minimally processed foods and thinking about the sustainability of your food choices can lead to a healthier and more ethically conscious way of living.

Situated on over 830 acres of elevated land, The Fairways by QM Properties has been carefully developed over the past 20 years and spans across three suburbs.

Once completed, the estate will feature over 900 homes, complemented by the existing Fairway Park, with the display village conveniently located just across from the park.

The expansive lots allow buyers to build their dream home without compromising on space.

This unparalleled lifestyle opportunity, as highlighted by Damien Ross, General Sales Manager at QM Properties, far exceeds anything offered by similar developments.

For those who love to spread out, whether it’s space for the kids or a hobbyist dreaming of a large shed or workshop, this is an exceptional opportunity that’ll be hard to pass up, he explained.

“Lots are a minimum 3000sqm, which is about seven times larger than the average new land developed in South East Queensland.

This allows buyers room for sheds, pools, gardens, and larger lifestyle homes,” he said.

Selecting the home to build is made easier by the developer, with The Fairways Acreage Display Village—the largest acreage home display village in the state—offering buyers a choice of six Queensland-based builders.

Buyers have been captivated by the large homesites that allow families to spread out.

Many buyers have relocated from Brisbane and Ipswich, seeking more space while maintaining a strong connection to thriving business hubs.

Nestled on elevated land, each lot not only resides above flood level but also boasts stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains within the Lockyer Valley.

    Current and upcoming display homes

Potential buyers don’t have to merely imagine the lifestyle on offer; they can experience it firsthand.

QM Properties and Master Builders have partnered to deliver The Fairways Acreage Display Village.

Four out of the six display homes are now open on Stirling Drive in Kensington Grove, directly across from Fairways Park.

Conveniently located next to the QM land sales centre at 1 Stirling Drive, the new display village showcases homes from award-winning builders such as Hallmark Homes, Stroud Homes, GJ Gardner, and G&P Builders.

Two additional display homes by Stylemaster Homes and Coral Homes are set to open in early 2025.

The Maleny by Stylemaster Homes is designed for discerning buyers seeking a sanctuary to call home. Ideal for acreage living or corner lots, The Maleny features a luxurious family floorplan with ample space for entertaining and a generous layout that keeps everyone comfortably connected.

The Highlands 338Q by Coral Homes

Coral Homes’ Highlands 338Q offers a contemporary take on acreage living. This spacious single-story home is designed for wider blocks of land and draws inspiration from natural elements. The modern ‘Lodge Facade’ showcases organic textures and tones, creating a harmonious connection with nature.

The Fairways Park: A beloved family hotspot

The Fairways Park, which has been funded by the Queensland Government and local council, is a unique feature of the community and includes a learn-to-ride area, dog park, barbecues, picnic spots, as well as adventure and sensory play areas.

Beloved Fairways Park has already captured the hearts of residents and families alike.

The park attracts families from across the region and is a popular destination for recreation and relaxation.

“It’s regarded as the best recreation parkland in the region,” said Mr Ross.

“Strategically located by council within the centre of The Fairways Estate, it provides locals and visitors with an amazing space for meeting, recreation, celebrations, and exercise for all the family and pets.”

The latest stages have been constructed with underground power, town water, and NBN for buyer comfort and convenience.

The display homes and recent stages are within walking distance of the highly popular 14-hectare, council-funded destination park.

Selecting the home to build is made easier by the developer, with The Fairways Acreage Display Village—the largest acreage home display village in the state—offering buyers a choice of six Queensland-based builders.

    Proximity to amenities

The estate is conveniently located close to Plainland, which has a substantial choice of local amenities including a Bunnings, Aldi, Woolworths, cafés, restaurants, and medical centres.

Families also have easy access to Hatton Vale State School, which is the estate school, and three childcare centres.

Already well-equipped, the community has everything it needs to thrive and flourish.

Options outside the estate include Faith Lutheran College Plainland and Sophia Catholic College Plainland, both of which are private schools.

While located within the regional suburbs of Queensland, residents are still easily connected to the busier cities and towns.

The A2 highway links commuters to Ipswich and Brisbane, and the Gold Coast via the M1.

    Lot sizes

Lot sizes in The Fairways range from 3000sqm to 5000sqm, accommodating diverse preferences and needs.

These spacious lots have room for lifestyle additions such as sheds, pools, and extensive gardens.

With ample space, homeowners can include features often considered luxuries in denser areas, such as large sheds, swimming pools, and extensive gardens.

Families gain extra room for children to play and pets to roam, while hobbyists and DIY enthusiasts can create dedicated workshops or studios.

These generously sized lots not only offer flexibility but also ensure privacy and seclusion, allowing residents to immerse themselves in the tranquillity and natural beauty of the Lockyer Valley.

    Sustainability initiatives

Nature lovers will find The Fairways an irresistible prospect, thanks to its stunning natural habitat and commitment to environmental preservation.

QM Properties designed the estate to embrace and enhance the untouched natural bushland.

Collaborating closely with the local council, they integrated sustainable initiatives that go beyond regulatory requirements to protect and celebrate local biodiversity.

“We wanted to foster a deep connection to nature, and many of the homes within the estate are situated beside or adjacent to parkland or dedicated nature corridors to facilitate this,” said Mr Ross.

To ensure residents enjoy living in a natural, shaded environment, 50% of the trees at the rear of each allotment were retained, and 10,000 plants have been introduced throughout the parkland and nature corridors.

The dedicated nature corridors have been meticulously designed to link protected fauna habitat within the Fairways Park to green spaces in and around the estate.

Two wildlife crossings have been constructed under and over the roads around the Fairways Park to ensure wildlife can move safely between these corridors.

“These initiatives will grow in importance over time as more wildlife is attracted to the area,” said Mr Ross.

  • Black Tea For Weight Loss: 3 Ways This Drink Burns Fat And Offers Other Health Benefits

Black Tea For Weight Loss: 3 Ways This Drink Burns Fat And Offers Other Health Benefits

Did you know that the history of tea stretches back over 5,000 years? In its earliest forms, tea was consumed as a warm concoction packed with nutrients. As time passed, various additions like milk and herbs transformed tea into a leisure beverage. Despite its evolution, tea remains a treasure trove of medicinal benefits, particularly black tea, one of the most popular varieties worldwide. Plus, it offers health benefits like helping with weight loss. Yes, drinking tea may aid your weight loss journey!

    Benefits Of Balck Tea:

Black tea is fully oxidized, giving it a robust flavour and a rich profile of antioxidants. When consumed in moderation, these antioxidants can offer a variety of health benefits, including cholesterol regulation, improved heart health, boosted immunity, increased energy levels, and even weight loss. While many associate weight loss primarily with green tea, black tea has its unique mechanisms that contribute to burning fat. Here’s why you might want to incorporate black tea into your weight loss regimen.

How Black Tea Helps With Weight Loss:

    1. The Gut Connection

Recent research, including a study published in the European Journal of Nutrition, has shown that black tea can positively influence gut health and aid weight loss. The specific mechanism involves the gut microbiome, which is distinct from the way green tea promotes weight loss. In studies on mice, both black and green teas demonstrated effectiveness in reducing weight, suggesting that black tea can also be beneficial for humans.

A healthy gut microbiome is crucial for digestion and overall health, as it helps in nutrient absorption and metabolism. By fostering a balanced gut environment, black tea may enhance metabolic processes, further supporting weight management.

    2. Lowers Triglyceride Levels

Flavonoids found in black tea are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds may help prevent inflammation-induced obesity by lowering triglyceride levels and reducing visceral fat. High triglyceride levels are associated with an increased risk of obesity and related health issues. By including black tea in your diet, you could support your body in maintaining healthier fat levels, making it easier to manage weight.

Regular consumption of black tea may also enhance your body’s ability to metabolize fats more effectively. This metabolic boost is essential not only for weight loss but also for overall well-being.

    3. Low-Calorie Beverage

One of the most appealing aspects of black tea is its low-calorie content. A cup of black tea contains approximately 2 calories, with zero saturated fat and cholesterol. The calorie count can increase based on added ingredients like sugar, honey, or milk, which can diminish its weight loss benefits. To maximize these benefits, it’s best to enjoy black tea steeped in water alone.

This low-calorie nature makes black tea a fantastic choice for those looking to manage their weight. It can be consumed throughout the day without adding significant calories to your diet, making it an excellent alternative to higher-calorie beverages.

Just like green tea, black tea also helps with weight loss.

    Also note:
While incorporating black tea into your weight loss plan can be beneficial, moderation is key. Excessive tea consumption can lead to unwanted side effects. Black tea has a higher caffeine content than green tea, which can result in dehydration if consumed in large quantities.

Additionally, black tea contains tannins, which contribute to its distinctive flavour. While tannins are generally harmless in moderate amounts, overconsumption can cause stomach discomfort or nausea.

To fully benefit from black tea in your weight loss journey, it’s essential to avoid adding sugary or fatty products to your brew. Monitoring your tea intake is crucial; more is not necessarily better.

Incorporating black tea into your diet can provide various benefits for weight management and overall health. However, like any dietary change, it’s important to consume it mindfully and in moderation. Enjoy black tea plain to reap the maximum rewards, and keep an eye on your overall caffeine intake. With these considerations in mind, you can enjoy the benefits of black tea while working toward your weight loss goals
