Birmingham City’s pursuit of a return back to the Championship has had a stunning start.
The Blues have won all but one of their opening eight league games so far this season, and they are already five points clear of Wrexham in second.
Chris Davies’ side have 22 points from a possible 24, and will be targeting an eighth league win in a row when they face Charlton Athletic this weekend.
The Midlands outfit will travel to the Valley to take on Nathan Jones’ team in a 3pm kick-off on Saturday.
The Addicks will be going into the game in poor form, having lost their previous three league fixtures in the build up to this meeting.
Alfons Sampsted change claim
When asked what changes he’d like to see in the side this weekend, if any, FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit suggested brining Alfons Sampsted into the starting lineup.
While he believes Taylor Gardner-Hickman has performed well while out of position at right-back, he would like to see the 26-year-old come into the side after his impressive display in the second half against Huddersfield Town midweek.
“I think the one change for me would be Sampsted coming in at right-back for Gardner-Hickman,” Gibbs told Football League World.
“I think the main reason why is that Gardner-Hickman has been great, obviously it’s not his natural position, he played there for West Brom in the past but we signed him as a central midfielder.
“He got the shirt when [Ethan] Laird got injured and Sampsted wasn’t available due to illness, and has done a really solid job with it.
“I think the reason for changing him would be Sampsted came in at half-time with Gardner-Hickman on a yellow card, and I think he was arguably our best player in the second half.
“Really good defensively, really good going forward, obviously didn’t set up the goal but was a key contributor to that goal, and his all-around performance was excellent.
“So that’s the one change I would make Saturday.”

Birmingham have earned wins over the likes of Huddersfield, Peterborough United, Rotherham United and Wrexham during this run of eight victories in a row.
Davies was appointed as manager in the summer after the club’s relegation to League One, and he is proving quite the success so far.
The gap at the top of the table is already five points after only eight games, while having played one fewer than second place Wrexham.
A win over Charlton could even see their lead stretch to eight points, if results elsewhere go in their favour.
Sampsted earned chance to start against Charlton
Gardner-Hickman performed well out of position for Birmingham but Sampsted earned a place in the starting lineup.
He likely would’ve been in that position anyway with Laird out but for his own absence due to illness.
That Gardner-Hickman is a solid option in that area, as well as midfield, is something Davies now knows firsthand, which will be very useful information to have for the new manager.
Otherwise, there’s no real need to make any unforced changes given how well the team has been performing so far this season.
Things to watch this week in the Big Ten Conference:
Game of the week
No. 10 Michigan (4-1, 2-0) at Washington (3-2, 1-1), Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
It’s a rematch of last year’s national championship game that Michigan won 34-13, but a whole lot has changed in the nine months since.
Both head coaches are gone, as Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers while Alabama hired Kalen DeBoer away from Washington. The quarterbacks from that game have departed as well after Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. went eighth and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy went 10th in this year’s NFL draft.
The teams combined for three losses by the end of September. Last year, they both carried unbeaten records into the championship game.
Michigan lost 31-12 at home to No. 2 Texas but has won three straight since. Sherrone Moore’s Wolverines are relying on a Kalel Mullings-led rushing attack, as they totaled just 118 yards passing the last two weeks in victories over Southern California and Minnesota.
Washington has lost two of its last three games, including a 21-18 setback at Rutgers last week, as the Huskies endure growing pains under new coach Jedd Fisch.BetMGM Sportsbook still has the Huskies as 2 1/2-point favorites.
The undercard
Iowa (3-1, 1-0) at No. 3 Ohio State (4-0, 1-0).
The Hawkeyes have scored at least 31 points in three of its first four games under new coordinator Tim Lester, a big step forward for a team that exceeded 26 points just once last season and got shut out in its final two games. Ohio State allows the fewest points per game (6.8) of any Bowl Subdivision team. Iowa’s a 19 ½-point underdog, according to BetMGM, and will need another big performance from Kaleb Johnson, who ranks second in the nation in yards rushing (685) and is coming off a 206-yard performance against Minnesota.
Impact players
Penn State DE Abdul Carter had four tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble in No. 7 Penn State’s 21-7 triumph over No. 24 Illinois. He was the first Penn State player to have four tackles for loss in a game since 2018.
Indiana LB Aiden Fisher had 12 tackles in a 42-28 victory over Maryland. He has collected at least eight tackles in each of No. 23 Indiana’s first five games and has a Big Ten-leading 50 this season.
Oregon WR Tez Johnson caught 11 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns in the sixth-ranked Ducks’ 34-13 victory at UCLA. After setting a school single-season record with 86 catches last year, Johnson already has 33 receptions through four games.
Inside the numbers
Wisconsin will try to beat Purdue for an 18th straight time on Saturday. Purdue’s last victory over Wisconsin came in 2003. … Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith has plenty of familiarity with Oregon – the Spartans’ opponent Friday – as a former Oregon State quarterback and coach. Smith went 2-4 against Oregon as Oregon State’s head coach and was 2-2 in his years as Oregon State’s quarterback. … Purdue QB Hudson Card has thrown as many touchdown passes to the opposing team (3) as to his own over the last three weeks. He has thrown a pick-6 in each of Purdue’s last three games. … Minnesota is allowing just 96.8 yards passing per game, the fewest of any FBS team.
Now don’t get upset
Indiana is 5-0 for only the third time in program history and the first time since 1967. The Hoosiers enter Saturday’s game at Northwestern as a 13 ½-point favorite, according to BetMGM. That number seems a bit large, considering the history of this series. Indiana has lost each of the last eight times it has visited Evanston and hasn’t won at Northwestern since 1993.

Nigerian football enthusiasts are known for their passion and keen interest in exploring ways to connect with the sport they love, but now many are also turning their attention to finance, particularly forex trading. They’ve discovered parallels between the thrilling world of football and the dynamic arena of trading. Similar to how fans study team performances and match strategies to predict game outcomes, traders analyze market trends to make informed trading decisions. To begin trading successfully in Nigeria, it’s crucial to select the right forex brokers in Nigeria. These brokers act as intermediaries, connecting traders with the global forex market and providing platforms and tools to simplify the trading process, helping Nigerian traders engage and potentially earn profits.
At first glance, football and forex trading seem like unrelated realms. However, upon closer inspection, the mindset of a football fan and that of a forex trader share notable similarities. A football enthusiast closely follows player performance, team strategies, and the odds of their team winning or losing. They make predictions based on their knowledge, intuition, and analysis of past performances. Similarly, a forex trader monitors global updates, studies charts, and examines technical indicators to anticipate market movements confidently, often under tight time constraints.
In both football and forex trading, research is a key component in determining outcomes. Just as football fans delve into team tactics, player injuries, and past matchups, forex traders explore currency patterns, economic indicators, and global events that influence the forex market. The passion that drives football fans to deepen their understanding of the game is mirrored in traders’ dedication to analyzing market trends and staying updated on international financial developments. This mutual commitment to learning and analysis is one reason why football fans with the right mindset often thrive when they venture into forex trading.
Both football enthusiasts and forex traders share a similar outlook when it comes to managing risk. In football, even the strongest teams can face unexpected setbacks due to injuries or controversial referee decisions. Similarly, the forex market can be unpredictable, which makes risk management a critical aspect of trading. Just as a football fan might hedge their bets, forex traders use strategies like stop-loss orders and managing position sizes to protect themselves from major losses.
Football and forex trading are emotionally charged pursuits, each filled with highs and lows. Football fans experience a whirlwind of emotions—from the joy of victory to the disappointment of defeat. Likewise, traders experience the ups and downs of market fluctuations. The key to succeeding in both areas lies in mastering emotional control. A devoted football fan knows that getting too emotionally attached to a team can cloud their judgment and lead to poor predictions. Similarly, traders must maintain composure during market volatility and make decisions based on logic rather than emotion. In both football and forex trading, staying objective and not getting emotionally invested in outcomes is crucial for long-term success.
Timing is another critical factor in both football and forex trading. Football fans and experts often analyze the timing of key decisions, like player substitutions or when to pass the ball. In the world of trading, executing trades at the right moment can be the difference between significant gains and costly losses. Football fans and traders alike need to have an instinct for recognizing the best time to act—whether it’s placing a wager on a game or making a trade in the forex market.
Football enthusiasts are known for their loyalty to their teams, just as forex traders are deeply committed to their trades. However, passion alone isn’t enough for success in these fields. Football fans must combine their enthusiasm with knowledge of the game and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Similarly, forex traders must pair their excitement for trading with a solid understanding of market dynamics. Both groups benefit from continuous learning and maintaining discipline in their respective fields. In both football and forex trading, there is always room to grow, and those who dedicate themselves to learning have a better chance of achieving success.
The similarities between football and forex trading might not be immediately obvious, but both require sharp attention to detail, a solid grasp of risk management, emotional control, and precise timing. For Nigerian football fans looking to broaden their horizons and explore new earning opportunities, forex trading presents a promising prospect. Partnering with reliable forex brokers in Nigeria can provide aspiring traders with the tools and support they need to navigate the complexities of the forex market. Just as in football, success in trading involves a combination of passion, expertise, and strategic thinking. Whether on the football field or in the financial markets, the excitement of making informed decisions keeps both fans and traders engaged.
The combination of strategy, timing, and emotional control gives football enthusiasts an edge in the world of forex trading. With the right mindset and approach, they have the potential to achieve substantial gains.
The Gators aren’t very good, but the Hurricanes embarrassed them in Gainesville behind 380 yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Cam Ward.
Ward is the top Heisman contender (+450, FanDuel), leading the FBS in Pro Football Focus’ passing grades (93.1) and touchdown passes (11), while ranking behind only Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart in yards per dropback (11.3).
Miami can run the ball with Oregon State transfer Damien Martinez (47 percent success rate), the defense ranks second nationally in Havoc rate (23 percent), and the special teams are borderline elite.
Cam Ward is the Heisman Trophy favorite. Getty Images
Still, Ward is the primary reason the Hurricanes lead all FBS teams in net EPA per play (+0.72).
He does have an Achilles heel, however, and that’s Havoc. His adjusted completion percentage drops almost 20 points from a clean pocket to a pressured one, where he’s far more vulnerable to turnover-worthy plays.
Luckily, Miami’s ACC schedule features defenses likely to finish around or below the national average in Havoc rate.
The Hurricanes face two talented defensive fronts in Virginia Tech and Florida State, but both are vastly underperforming, and the games will be played at home. Miami doesn’t play Clemson and its talented defensive front.
The biggest challenge will be at Louisville, as Ward must handle stud defensive end Ashton Gillotte in a hostile environment. But the Hurricanes have a bye the week before to prepare.
With the rest of the ACC crumbling, Miami has the quarterback-schedule combination to emerge from the mess. I project them as favorites in every remaining game, including by double-digits in every contest save for Florida State and Louisville.
Recommendation: Miami to win ACC (+135, DraftKings).
Big 12: Watch out for Iowa State
I bet Iowa State to win the Big 12 in the preseason at 11/1, and I’m unsure why the odds haven’t changed.
They returned 19 starters from last year’s squad, which won five of seven games once Rocco Becht took over as the quarterback.
Becht was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2023, and two of his top three wide receivers and all of his starting offensive linemen are back. Matt Campbell’s defense returned nine starters from 2023, and the secondary looks formidable.
Iowa State’s defense has been among the best on college football. Getty Images
Over the past three seasons, Iowa State went 1-6 in games decided by four or fewer points, so it seemed reasonable the Cyclones could win the Big 12 if the returning production improved and their close-game luck flipped.
They finally earned some of that luck, pulling out a fantastic one-point win against Iowa’s vaunted defense on the road in Week 2. Meanwhile, other notable Big 12 results from Weeks 1 to 3:
Utah quarterback Cam Rising suffered another injury.
Kansas State’s secondary was burned by Tulane.
Oklahoma State should’ve lost to Arkansas.
UCF’s secondary got torched by TCU.
Betting on College Football?
Yet, all those teams still have shorter Big 12 championship odds than Iowa State. I have the Cyclones power-rated as the Big 12’s top squad, and the eye test confirms that thus far.
Recommendation: Iowa State to win Big 12 (11/1, Caesars).

LEXINGTON, Ky. — College GameDay was ready to set up camp here Saturday for Georgia-Kentucky until the Wildcats were slapped around by South Carolina.
It turns out the matchup was worth the prime-time slot it occupied on ABC.
No. 1 Georgia had to dig deep to pull out a tougher-than-anyone-expected 13-12 win at Kroger Field.
There are plenty of games that will warrant ESPN’s road show to follow Georgia around like Deadheads or Swifties go from town to town.
On tap: at No. 4 Alabama next on Sept. 28, at No. 3 Texas on Oct. 19 and at No. 5 Ole Miss on Nov. 9.
“We get to go to Bryant-Denny and many other places on the road this year,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “So it’s going to be an adventure every time we go out on the road. I mean, it’s a tough schedule, guys. When we got it, I knew it. I mean, the first game I pointed at was Kentucky because everybody was talking about the other three on the road.”
There’s also No. 9 Tennessee between the hedges.
Add in the win over then No. 14 Clemson and that’s five ranked opponents.
Alabama has new coach Kalen DeBoer, quarterback Jalen Milroe and fabulous freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams and like Georgia gets two weeks between games after pounding Wisconsin 42-10 in an impressive road win in Big Ten country on Saturday.
“I don’t know that we can rest and recover,” Smart said. “I mean, that’s what people think bye weeks mean. We’ve got to find a way to improve and get better. You know, we were really beat up coming into this game, specifically at one position, and it was a really tough week for us.”
Former Alabama running back Mark Ingram warned on Fox after the game: “I think the defense needs to tighten it up at the line of scrimmage. They gave up 149 rushing yards to Wisconsin today. … Georgia’s coming to town and they’re going to need to play a lot better up front to win that game.”
Georgia has played five ranked opponents in the regular season just five times previously, once under Smart.
That came in the 2018 regular season, but the highest ranked were Florida and Kentucky — who were No. 9 at the time.
Four of Mark Richt’s teams played five ranked opponents in the regular season.
The 2014 Bulldogs highest was a No. 9 Auburn and his 2008 team also had five that included a No. 5 Florida team that thrashed the Bulldogs 49-10 and No. 8 Alabama that delivered a 41-30 Blackout loss to Georgia.
In 2005, the five included one top 10-opponent, No. 7 Tennessee. In 2001, Georgia played a pair of No. 6 teams, including Tennessee who they crushed with a hobnail boot 26-24.
Georgia played again Saturday without injured defensive linemen Mykel Williams, Warren Brinson and Jordan Hall. Defensive end Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins got banged up during the game but still played what Smart said was the most snaps he’s had at Georgia.
Nazir Stackhouse and Christen Miller also took on bigger roles in a game Kentucky had more snaps than Georgia (73-54) and time of possession (35 minutes to 25).
“We’re missing some key D-lineman,” cornerback Julian Humphrey said. “We’re missing a lot of guys. Once we get those guys back, it’s going to be better for us.”
The Bulldogs won with their lowest total yards (262) and points (13) since a 10-3 win over Clemson to open the 2021 season.
“We can’t make excuses,” quarterback Carson Beck said. “We didn’t come in here and play our brand of football.”
Georgia still carries a 16-game winning streak in opponent’s home stadiums — tops in the nation — to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 28.
“We’re going to play better and better offenses,” Smart said. “We’ve got to get better and better, but it’s pretty hard to do. I mean, I don’t know if anybody in college football has been able to sustain that. It’s just hard.”
Speculation about who could potentially host Channel Nine’s forthcoming The Golden Bachelor is reaching fever pitch.
Entertainment journalist Peter Ford weighed into the debate this week, tipping that the host of the Nine version of the ABC US smash hit will be none other than Samantha Armytage.
The popular presenter, 47, announced her departure from Seven in August after 21 years with the network.
Taking to X, Peter responded to a report on Inside Media about the likely host, claiming it would be almost certainly be the former Farmer Wants A Wife helmer.
‘If I were a betting man, I’d put money on @samarmytage,’ Peter suggested.
‘She’s now a free agent after leaving 7 and has been clear she was interested in new opportunities.’
The report itself scuttled rumours that previous Bachelor host Osher Gunsberg would make a return to the franchise.
‘For those wondering whether original Bachelor host Osher Gunsberg will be returning to the franchise I have some very bad news,’ presenter Rob McKnight began.
Respected entertainment journalist Peter Ford has tipped Samantha Armytage
‘My sources say Osher has missed out on a Red Rose.’
Rob added that he will be replaced by a ‘popular, but surprising’ TV presenter.
‘And I can confirm, despite media speculation, that it is not Sonia Kruger,’ he said.
Yahoo Lifestyle reported last week that Sonia could be getting ready to jump ship from Seven to host the latest iteration of the Bachelor franchise.
“The word on the street is that Sonia could reboot The Golden Bachelor on Channel Nine in 2025,’ a source told the publication.
Rob said that while he couldn’t spill the beans just yet, that Osher’s replacement would ‘blow your mind.’
‘If I were a betting man, I’d put money on @samarmytage,’ Peter suggested on X. ‘She’s now a free agent after leaving 7 and has been clear she was interested in new opportunities’
Peter was responding to a report on Inside Media that scuttled suggestions that former host Osher Gunsberg or Sonia Kruger were frontrunners to helm the reality show. Pictured is Gerry Turner, the US Golden Bachelor
TV Blackbox reported in August that Nine will be formally announcing an Australian version of The Golden Bachelor at its yearly Upfronts event in October.
The original series, which screened on ABC in the US, starred 72-year-old Gerry Turner, a retired restauranteur and widower.
Gerry chose to propose to 70-year-old Theresa Nist and the network aired their wedding as a live special.
Despite the fanfare, the couple divorced three months later.
The series proved to be a ratings juggernaut for ABC, with the finale hitting 6.1 million American screens, giving the franchise its highest numbers in three years.
Host Rob McKnight teased the host was a very ‘popular, but surprising TV presenter that would ‘blow your mind’
Its premiere episode also set ratings records for ABC, as reported by Deadline , debuting as the highest-rated premiere on Hulu for any series in the franchise, and as ABC’s number one series premiere ever on the streaming platform Live+3.
The publication also reported that the strength of the Golden Bachelor has seen the franchise expand again with ABC announcing The Golden Bachelorette.
When contacted by Daily Mail Australia, a spokesperson for Channel Nine said they wouldn’t be confirming their programming lineup for 2025 until the Upfronts event in October.
