8 Bizarre Food Combinations From 2024 That Made Headlines

As 2024 wraps up, it’s time to reflect on a year filled with food-good and not-so-good. For foodies, it was a rollercoaster with new restaurant openings and colourful food festivals. But amidst the delicious surprises, there were also some wild recipes and viral food trends that had us doing double-takes. Some were shocking, some gross, and others just plain confusing. Let’s take a look at the bizarre food videos that left us questioning the choices of those behind them.

Here Are Some Bizarre Food Trends That We Saw In 2024:

    1. Chocolate Vegetable Rice Bowl

In March, Scott Hentzepeter went viral with his “vegetable rice bowl”… with chocolate. The video started with him mixing an entire packet of chocolate chip cookies in boiling water, mashing it into a pudding-like consistency, and then adding canned carrots, peas, and sweet corn. He poured this “vegetable pudding” over rice and even tasted it, rating it 8/10. Viewers were stunned, with many comparing it to “food poisoning.”

    2. Daulat Ki Chaat Gets A Non-Veg Makeover

April saw Delhi’s beloved Daulat Ki Chaat reimagined as an omelette. In a viral video, a vendor made an omelette using butter, veggies, and spices before adding mayonnaise, cheese slices, onions, tomatoes, and coriander. Needless to say, foodies were not impressed, and the internet was quick to voice their disapproval.

    3. Make Way For Golgappa Maggi

In May, a viral video showed a woman stuffing golgappas with vegetable Maggi. She took a bite and smiled, but the internet wasn’t as pleased. Maggi lovers were quick to criticize the combination, with many demanding the arrest of those behind it. It was a shocking mix that left most people in splits.

    4. Mirinda + Omelette = Best Friends?

In June, a street vendor shocked viewers by adding Mirinda to his omelette mix. As he poured the orange soda into the beaten eggs, people cringed. The final result was served with a small bottle of Mirinda, and internet users couldn’t stop making jokes about whether it was an omelette or a health hazard.

    5. Bhatura Gets a Burger Makeover

What happens when you turn a crispy, fried bhatura into a burger? In this bizarre video, a vendor stuffed a bhatura with aloo tikki, chole, onions, and chutney, and then toasted it on a tawa. Many viewers were stunned by this unhealthy twist on a classic dish.

    6. Fruit And Momos: A New Trend

October saw the rise of “fruit momos” in Delhi. A vendor stuffed fried fruit (apples, bananas, guavas) with butter, milk, cheese, and cream, then seasoned it with salt and herbs. To top it off, fried paneer momos were added. The vlogger who posted the video claimed these were “specially made for gym enthusiasts,” but not everyone was convinced.

    7. Chocolate-Filled Idlis with Fruits

In October, a viral video showcased a “chocolate-filled idli” topped with strawberry, mango, and litchi jams. The content creator didn’t hold back, saying, “I haven’t eaten anything worse than this in Bangalore.” The bizarre combo had the internet calling for “Justice for Idli.”

    8. Gulab Jamun Paratha

November brought us a new food trend: Gulab Jamun paratha. The vendor rolled out dough, placed two gulab jamuns inside, and fried it on a tawa, drizzling sugar syrup on top. The result? A “dangerous diabetes duo,” according to many viewers who were both shocked and grossed out.

  • Gulab Jamun Paratha: The Sweet And Savoury Bizarre Food Mash-Up Is Going Viral Again

Gulab Jamun Paratha: The Sweet And Savoury Bizarre Food Mash-Up Is Going Viral Again

In the ever-evolving world of Indian street food, vendors have become the unsung innovators of bold and often bizarre culinary experiments. With an eye for the unconventional and a knack for blending the unbendable, they’ve created concoctions that sent shockwaves through social media. Among these, one dish has sparked heated debate and more than a few raised eyebrows — the gulab jamun paratha. It’s a mash-up that combines the deep-fried sweetness of gulab jamun with the savoury taste of paratha — a combination as bewildering as it sounds. We saw this unique dish doing the round on the internet a couple of years back, and it’s trending again now.

The dish caught the public’s attention when food vlogger Gaurav Wasan posted a video on Instagram. In it, a vendor prepares the gulab jamun paratha, beginning with a simple dough that’s rolled out and filled with two gulab jamuns. The vendor gently crushes the sweet dumplings, encasing them in the dough before carefully rolling it into a paratha shape. This is followed by a sizzle on a hot tawa, followed by a generous drizzle of sugar syrup to complete the dish.

The post swiftly garnered over 60,000 likes and an avalanche of reactions. The comments were, unsurprisingly, a mixed bag.

One user exclaimed, “That’s abuse with gulab jamun,” while another wrote, “Diabetes pro max approaching.” One more user chimed in with, “Filled with dangerous diabetes duo (carbs + sugar),” and some were so appalled that they asked, “Did you eat it? Where is the part you ate that?”

If you thought gulab jamun paratha was a strange and bizarre food fusion, then you probably haven’t heard about ‘onion coke.’ A few weeks ago, food blogger Calvin Lee took to Instagram to share his bold experiment with this unusual pairing. In the video, Calvin drops onion slices into a glass of Coke and lets them infuse for a few minutes. To his surprise, he found the flavour combination enjoyable, with the onion adding a subtle kick that balanced the sweetness. Curious about the internet’s reaction? Find out here.

In the world of food, it seems the line between innovative and outrageous doesn’t exist at all. From the sweet and savoury twist of gulab jamun paratha to the pairing of onions and Coke, culinary creativity knows no bounds. So, coming back to gulab jamun paratha — would you dare to try one?

Chor Bizarre Is Back! A Look Inside The Iconic Restaurant Thats Stolen Delhis Heart Again

If you’ve ever ventured into the heart of Daryaganj, you know that the reopening of Chor Bizarre is a big deal. The restaurant, beloved by loyal patrons for its quirky decor and authentic regional Indian cuisine, is back – and it feels like stepping into a time capsule of eclectic charm. Originally launched in 1990 by Rohit Khattar, Chor Bizarre was India’s first theme restaurant, bringing together the finest Kashmiri delicacies and regional flavours in a setting that was as much about the experience as it was about the food. Now, after years of anticipation, it has reopened its doors at Asaf Ali Road.
A Feast for the Eyes: Interiors That Tell a Story
The interiors at Chor Bizarre have always been as much a part of its charm as the food itself, and this reopening is no exception. Rohit and Rashmi Khattar, along with the design team, have painstakingly curated each element of the space. It’s an artistic mishmash of kitsch, creativity, and nostalgia – a true “chor bazaar” (thieves market) brought to life. You’ll spot quirky posters, a 1927 Fiat parked inside (yes, you read that right), a four-poster bed, and even a Singer sewing machine table. It’s a curated chaos that somehow gels beautifully, offering an immersive experience that’s hard to forget.

Design Director Rashmi Khattar has resurrected the vibe she originally crafted back in the 90s, mixing in new pieces while preserving the iconic ones. The antique furniture, vintage trinkets, and retro Bollywood tunes that fill the air set the stage for an unforgettable culinary journey. It’s not just a place to eat; it’s a place to explore, wander through, and soak in the rich tapestry of India’s history and creativity.
The Food: A Journey Through India’s Regional Flavours
When it comes to food, Chor Bizarre has always stood out, and under the expertise of Chef Srinivas, it continues to deliver. The menu is a celebration of regional Indian cuisine, with a special focus on Kashmiri flavours that are hard to come by elsewhere. Chef Srinivas, who’s been with the restaurant for 17 years, ensures that while the menu is updated, it stays true to the restaurant’s roots.

We started with a few chaats that set the tone for the meal – bold, tangy, and full of textures. The Purani Dilli Ki Papri Chaat was a perfect burst of nostalgia, with semolina and flour chips balanced by the coolness of yogurt and the zing of tamarind. Equally intriguing was the Dahi Batata Puri, a crisp sphere filled with a medley of potato, yogurt, and mint chutney, topped with sev. For something a little different, the Palak Patta Chaat brought crispy spinach to the table, complemented by a sweet and savoury medley of chutneys.

As we moved into the starters, Chor Bizarre’s offerings shone in their innovative takes on traditional dishes. The Tandoori Malai Phool was an indulgent mix of cauliflower and broccoli in a creamy cheese marinade. The Gazab Ka Tikka, with its tender chicken tikka coated in a cheese marinade, was equally irresistible. For a more luxurious bite, the Kasundi Fish Tikka presented delicate sole fish, marinated with mustard and chilli garlic for a perfect balance of heat and flavour.

Then came the Galouti Kabab, a pan-fried minced lamb delicacy that practically melted in your mouth, and the Murgh Shaami, crispy chicken patties infused with the house’s signature spice blend. The Tandoori Bharwan Khumb (stuffed mushrooms) and Tandoori Malai Phool were also crowd-pleasers, full of rich, creamy goodness.
Moving to the mains, the Sharabi Kababi Tikka Masala was a standout: tender chicken tikka cooked in a rich tomato and onion gravy finished off with a shot of brandy for that extra punch. The Rista (lamb spheres cooked in a Kashmiri gravy) was velvety and aromatic, while the Dal Chor B’zar – black lentils cooked with tomatoes and cream – was a comforting classic. For something more fiery, the Chicken Chettinad brought spring chicken cooked with stone flowers and aromatic spices.
And for those who can never get enough of the creamy goodness, the Paneer Makhni with cottage cheese in a rich tomato-butter gravy was a hit.
    Cocktails: A Sip of Genius
No meal at Chor Bizarre would be complete without a round of cocktails. Thanks to the award-winning mixologist Varun Sharma, the drinks are as much a treat as the food. Varun Sharma’s, NDTV Food Award-winning mixologist, signature cocktails bring together flavours that perfectly complement the rich, hearty fare. His carefully curated beverage menu is a celebration of both innovation and tradition, with each drink offering something new and exciting.

    Dessert to Wrap It Up
To end the meal, we indulged in some of the most comforting desserts. The Kashmiri Phirni, rich with saffron and semolina, was the perfect end to a spicy meal. The Stuffed Gulab Jamun offered a sweet, fried sphere of milk solids drenched in syrup, while the Kulfi – rich, creamy, and utterly indulgent – rounded off the experience beautifully.

    Final Verdict

The reopening of Chor Bizarre feels like a homecoming. It’s a place that has always blended tradition with imagination, and this new chapter is no different. With its intriguing decor, rich food, and carefully crafted cocktails, it’s a place that invites you to come for the food and stay for the experience. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a first-time visitor, this iconic spot in Daryaganj is well worth the visit – for nostalgia, flavours and memories in the making.

Ex-Real Madrid star launches bizarre rant at Cristiano Ronaldo – suggesting the legendary striker ‘doesn’t know how to play football’

    • Ronaldo is the only player in the history of football to have reached 900 goals
    • One former Real Madrid star believes that Ronaldo’s ‘only objective’ is to score
    • LISTEN NOW: It’s All Kicking Off! , available wherever you get your podcasts. New episodes every Monday and Thursday

A former Real Madrid forward has launched a scathing attack on Cristiano Ronaldo, suggesting the 39-year-old striker is too selfish.

Ronaldo became the first player in the history of the sport to reach 900 goals earlier this month when he scored for Portugal against Croatia.

The Portuguese star has been hailed as one of the most effective goalscorers in the history of the game by many, continuing his exploits in front of goal into his late 30s.

However, Antonio Cassano does not share the same view and while speaking on the Viva El Futbol podcast, the Italian bizarrely criticised Ronaldo despite his landmark achievement.

‘Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t know how to play football,’ said Cassano. ‘He could score 3000 goals, I don’t give a f***.

‘Higuain, Aguero, Benzema, Lewandowski, Ibrahimovic and Suarez knew how to link-up with the team.

‘They knew how to do a lot of things, unlike Ronaldo whose only objective has always been to score.’

This is not the first time that Cassano has taken issue with ‘CR7’. Speaking back in 2022, the former Los Blancos striker went as far as to say it was time for Ronaldo to hang up his boots, while he was playing for Manchester United.

‘A guy like Cristiano has to think about himself and if you can’t do it anymore then you have to call it a day,’ Cassano said. ‘It’s a rule in all sports. Retire, that’s enough!

‘He has won everything, he has been a phenomenon, he has earned a lot of money and now he is not a starter at Manchester United.’

Cassano took his own advice in 2017, calling it quits after 18 years in the sport which saw him play in Spain and Italy.

The now 42-year-old started his career at Italian side Bari before making a name for himself during a five-year spell at Roma in Serie A.

Cassano only managed four goals in a two-year spell at Real Madrid between 2006 to 2008

His exploits at ‘I Giallorossi’ earned him his big move to Real Madrid, but he only netted four goals in 29 appearances across two years in the Spanish capital before being shipped back permanently to his homeland.

Compare that to Ronaldo who netted at a rate of more than a goal a game in the white of Madrid, scoring 450 goals in 438 games.

Cassano and Ronaldo never crossed paths at Los Blancos, with the former Italy international leaving on loan to Sampdoria in 2007, before a permanent move a year later, while the now Al-Nassr striker arrived at the Spanish giants in 2009.

  • Gatorwine: A Bizarre Drink Trend Making Waves On Social Media

Gatorwine: A Bizarre Drink Trend Making Waves On Social Media

From roasted milk tea to rice paper croissants, various types of unusual recipes have taken social media by storm in the past year. Foodies are often curious to try making these viral creations at home and deciding for themselves if they’re worth the hype. While some experimental recipes attract appreciation, others are slammed for destroying beloved flavours. One of the unique drinks going viral at present is something called “Gatorwine”. As the name suggests, it is a combination of Gatorade and cheap red wine (trends suggest it should cost less than $12 a bottle).

Light blue Gatorade has been called the “ideal” choice for this viral drink. One of the videos featuring Gatorwine that has attracted a lot of attention was shared by YouTuber and cook, Andrew Rea (also known as “Binging with Babish). During a special tasting segment on his YouTube channel, he is seen ranking some of the “strangest recipes” suggested by his followers. One of them is Gatorwine, which is made by mixing equal parts of the two-component liquids.

After taking a sip, he declares, “It’s not like anything I’ve ever tasted, ever. I don’t know what to do about it. Because if I’m being honest, I’d rather drink this than Barefoot or Yellowtail. Does that make me a snob or does that make me cool? I don’t know,” he laughs and adds that he would drink Gatorwine “on the rocks”. He clarifies, “The more I’m drinking it the more I like it.” He also compares it to a Sangria, due to the so-called ‘fruity’ notes of the Gatorade. He says, “I definitely don’t like it as much as Sangria, but I don’t like it any less than that.” He initially ranks it 6/10. He has the drink along with other foods in the episode and later upgrades its ranking to a 7.

The YouTube user @GoatsNowhere, who submitted the Gatorwine idea for the tasting session, commented below, “I am the Gatorwine maker! I have been ridiculed for almost a decade, and I will have this video playing on my gravestone.”

Influenced by the trend, social media users are also making Gatorwine and sharing their thoughts on it. Rea’s reaction to Gatorwine has also grabbed eyeballs on other platforms. His reel on Instagram has clocked over 3 million views so far. Check out some of the reactions from Instagram below:

“Sooooo I made this last night. Is it awful trash…yes. Did I have 3 glasses also yes. It’s like the Gatorade turns the wine back into grape juice, but not good grape juice like artificially flavoured Capri Sun grape juice.”

“Kendall pouring the initial batch with a measuring cup is really offering the Gatorwine a degree of dignity that it does not deserve.”

“I like how technically the flavours of both drinks are only identified by their colours.”

“Enthusiasm for Gatorwine is suspicious behaviour.”

“Sauvignon blanc and cucumber lime Gatorade is the better combo.”

“Try Coca-Cola and wine next, it’s called poor man’s sangria… tried it once not too bad.”
