  • Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin launches massive New Glenn rocket on first test flight

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin launches massive New Glenn rocket on first test flight

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Blue Origin launched its massive new rocket on its first test flight Thursday, sending up a prototype satellite to orbit thousands of miles above Earth.

Named after the first American to orbit Earth, the New Glenn rocket blasted off from Florida, soaring from the same pad used to launch NASA’s Mariner and Pioneer spacecraft a half-century ago.

Years in the making with heavy funding by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the 320-foot (98-meter) rocket carried an an experimental platform designed to host satellites or release them into their proper orbits.

For this test, the satellite was expected to remain inside the second stage while circling Earth. The mission was expected to last six hours, with the second stage then placed in a safe condition to stay in a high, out-of-the-way orbit in accordance with NASA’s practices for minimizing space junk.

The first-stage booster aimed to land on a barge in the Atlantic minutes after liftoff so it could be recycled.

New Glenn was supposed to fly before dawn Monday, but ice buildup in critical plumbing caused a delay. The rocket is built to haul spacecraft and eventually astronauts to orbit and also the moon.

Founded 25 years ago by Bezos, Blue Origin has been launching paying passengers to the edge of space since 2021, including himself. The short hops from Texas use smaller rockets named after the first American in space, Alan Shepard. New Glenn, which honors John Glenn, is five times taller.

Blue Origin poured more than $1 billion into New Glenn’s launch site, rebuilding historic Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The pad is 9 miles (14 kilometers) from the company’s control centers and rocket factory, outside the gates of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

Bezos — taking part in the launch from Mission Control — declined to disclose his personal investment in the program. He said he does not see Blue Origin in a competition with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, long the rocket-launching dominator.

Blue Origin envisions six to eight New Glenn flights this year, if everything goes well, with the next one coming up this spring.

“There’s room for lots of winners” Bezos said from the rocket factory over the weekend, adding that this was the “very, very beginning of this new phase of the space age, where we’re all going to work together as an industry … to lower the cost of access to space.”

New Glenn is the latest in a series of big, new rockets to launch in recent years, including United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan, Europe’s upgraded Ariane 6 and NASA’s Space Launch System or SLS, the space agency’s successor to the Saturn V for sending astronauts to the moon.

The biggest rocket of all, at approximately 400 feet (123 meters), is SpaceX’s Starship. Elon Musk said the seventh test flight of the full rocket could occur later Thursday from Texas. He hopes to repeat what he pulled off in October, catching the returning booster at the launch pad with giant mechanical arms.

Starship is what NASA plans to use to land astronauts on the moon later this decade. The first two moon landings under the space agency’s Artemis program, which follows the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s, will see crews descending from lunar orbit to the surface in Starships.

Blue Origin’s lander, dubbed Blue Moon, will make its debut on the third lunar touchdown by astronauts.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson pushed for competing moon landers similar to the strategy to hire two companies to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station. Nelson will step down when President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Monday.

Trump has tapped tech billionaire Jared Isaacman to run NASA. Isaacman, who has twice rocketed into orbit on his own privately financed SpaceX flights, must be approved by the Senate.

New Glenn’s debut was supposed to send twin spacecraft to Mars for NASA. But the space agency pulled them from last October’s planned flight when it became clear the rocket wouldn’t be ready in time. They will still fly on a New Glenn rocket, but not until spring at the earliest. The two small spacecraft, named Escapade, are meant to study the Martian atmosphere and magnetic environment while orbiting the red planet.

  • Banning cellphones in schools gains popularity in red and blue states

Banning cellphones in schools gains popularity in red and blue states

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas’ Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom have little in common ideologically, but the two have both been vocal supporters of an idea that’s been rapidly gaining bipartisan ground in the states: Students’ cellphones need to be banned during the school day.

At least eight states have enacted such bans over the past two years, and proposals are being considered in several more states this year.

Here is a look at the push by states for such bans.

The push for cellphone bans has been driven by concerns about the impact screen time has on children’s mental health and complaints from teachers that cellphones have become a constant distraction in the classroom.

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, who has called on Congress to require warning labels on social media platforms about their effects on young people’s lives, has said schools need to provide phone-free times.

Nationally, 77% of U.S. schools say they prohibit cellphones at school for non-academic use, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. But that number is misleading. It does not mean students are following those bans or all those schools are enforcing them.

Kim Whitman, co-founder of the Phone Free Schools Movement, said the issue is catching on because parents and teachers in both red and blue states are struggling with the consequences of kids on mobile devices.

“It doesn’t matter if you live in a big city or a rural town, urban or suburban, all children are struggling and need that seven-hour break from the pressures of phones and social media during the school day,” she said.

At least eight states — California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia — have enacted measures banning or restricting students’ use of cellphones in schools.

The policies range widely. Florida was the first state to crack down on phones in school, passing a 2023 law that requires all public schools to ban cellphone use during class time and block access to social media on district Wi-Fi.

A 2024 California law requires the state’s nearly 1,000 school districts to create their own cellphone policies by July 2026.

Several other states haven’t banned phones, but have encouraged school districts to enact such restrictions or have provided funding to store phones during the day.

Sanders announced a pilot program last year providing grants to schools that adopt phone-free policies, and more than 100 schools signed on. In her state of the state address this week, Sanders proposed an outright ban.

“We will ban cellphones in our schools, bell to bell, so that our kids are not distracted, in class or out of it,” Sanders said.

Other governors recently calling for bans include Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, who was sworn in this month, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has suggested she’ll seek a statewide policy, but has not offered specifics.

The cellphone bans have faced opposition from some parents who say they need to be able to contact their children directly in case of emergency.

Some parents have pointed to recent school shootings where having access to cellphones was the only way some students were able to communicate with loved ones for what they thought might be the last time.

But supporters of the bans have noted that students’ phones could pose additional dangers during an emergency by distracting students or by revealing their location during an active shooter situation.

Parents opposed to the ban have also said they want their children to have access to their phones for other needs, such as coordinating transportation.

Keri Rodrigues, president of the National Parents Union, said she agrees about the dangers of social media on children but that the bans sought by states are taking too broad of an approach. Banning the devices during the school day is not going to solve underlying issues like bullying or the dangers of social media, she said.

“We have not done our job as grown-ups to try to teach our kids the skills they need to actually navigate this technology,” she said. “We’ve just kicked the can down the road and thrown them into the deep end of the pool when they’re by themselves after school.”

Business News | Wellness Lifestyle Launches Jalasya: An End-to-End Technology Stack for Regenerative Wellness Estates, Rooted in Blue Economy Principles

    ATK

Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], November 4: Wellness Lifestyle (WL) announces the global launch of the Jalasya technology stack. Built on the Blue Economy framework pioneered by Gunter Pauli, author of the acclaimed “The Blue Economy” book series, the Jalasya stack uses an open-source format that can be continuously upgraded and aspires to set new standards in regenerative wellness developments and operations.

Developed over five years, Jalasya was recently selected by the ayushca estates of the IIT Alumni Council for their upcoming campuses in Goa, NCR, and Madhya Pradesh. Jalasya was also recently featured in the book, “Accelerate Your Journey” which outlines the sustainability philosophy of the Climate Resilience Platform – a consortium of Gunter Pauli’s ZERI, Development Alternatives and Wellness Lifestyle Foundation. The consortium is led by Dr Ashok Khosla, a sustainability pioneer widely recognised for his contributions to the field and for popularising the concept on international platforms. Early in his career, Khosla collaborated with Professor Roger Revelle, co-developing the groundbreaking environmental course “Natural Sciences 118” at Harvard, which shaped many students’ perspectives, including that of Nobel Laureate Al Gore. This course led to The Survival Equation, one of the first definitive textbooks on environmental sustainability.

“The wellness movement has the potential to influence behaviours and choices,” said Christina Watson, spokesperson of Wellness Lifestyle (WL). “We can create awareness, inspire change; and also, be the change. Jalasya, our pioneering Thalasso-Aqua Technology Stack, was developed to be the change we wish to see in the world. At WL, we are incorporating the Blue Economy principles as fundamental to all our wellness projects for self-sufficiency, ecological responsibility, and social equity and contribute to building hyper-local economies”.

Wellness Lifestyle (www.wellnesslifestyle.com) developed the Jalasya stack in partnership with the start-ups supported by the IIT Alumni Council, and it goes beyond advocacy to action. One of the startups that contributed to developing the paradigms embodied in the stack is the Prakriti Prerna Foundation (PPF). PPF was started three years ago with a revolutionary vision of ‘flourishing forests and thriving wildlife’. The PPF pilot projects are distributed over a 100 sqkm area adjoining the 1500 sqkm Bandhavgarh forest in central India.

According to award-winning climate change warrior, IIT Alumni Council Life Fellow and PPF Founder, Srinivas Rachakonda, “We have seen thirty feet high trees grow in less than thirty months and organic farms producing up to 150 tons per acre per annum of fruits and 40 tons per acre per annum of vegetables. A prudent combination of traditional wisdom and cutting-edge technologies achieved this performance. Several of these protocols and technologies are now part of the Jalasya stack for the biodynamic farming module of the ayushca campuses. We are happy to have been able to contribute to its development.”

The Jalasya stack is relevant to all kinds of real estate formats. Founder of Beeja Luxury, Geetika Saigal, a TED speaker and celebrity author, remarked, “As an Advisor to the ayushca Goa team, I get to meet so many high-net-worth individuals excited about luxury wellness properties in the USD 5 million+ bracket. But in reality, the truly discerning buyers won’t commit unless developers genuinely deliver on their promises–real sustainability, wellness facilities, and Jalasya-level infrastructure. That’s what makes the difference.”

Requests for more information or interviews with the Jalasya team members may be sent to contact@wellnesslifestyle.com.

She and her hunky spouse posed up on the red carpet before rubbing shoulders with the likes of Emily Ratajkowski and Amelia Gray Hamlin on Tuesday night.

Smith, 23 — whose controversial TikTok videos have garnered her over 10million followers — sizzled in a skimpy faux leather miniskirt and a tan cashmere cardigan.

Her wavy jaw-length hair was swept to one side and she rocked chic designer sunglasses.

To complete the ultra sexy look, the mother-of-three slipped on a pair of black block heels.

Lucky — whose modeling work has appeared in Vogue and GQ — had an arm wrapped around Nara’s tiny waist during their time in front of cameras.

The supermodel, 26, channeled Hollywood heartthrob James Dean as he rocked a black leather jacket over a tight T-shirt.

He also sported loose slacks and black leather dress shoes.

His golden blonde locks were slicked back with gel and, like Nara, he opted for sunglasses at night.

Nara’s fame spans from her popular yet controversial ‘tradwife’ lifestyle videos, which she shares on TikTok and Instagram.

‘Tradwife’ content often showcases women who don clothes in the 1950s style while embracing traditional gender roles, like preparing homemade meals from scratch, childrearing and other domestic responsibilities.

Nara has been married to fellow model Lucky since February 2020.

The couple are parents to three kids: daughter Rumble Honey, three, son Slim Easy, two, and daughter Whimsy Lou Smith, six months.

Nara is also stepmother to her husband’s daughter Gravity, seven, from his previous relationship to model Stormi Bree, 33.

Nara told Harper’s Bazaar in August that she’s had ‘a really hard time’ digesting the concept of the ‘the trad wife, whatever it is.’

The Bloemfontein, South Africa-born beauty — who was raised in Germany — said that she’s ‘a working mom’ and that the posts she put up on social media are ‘really not that deep,’ regardless of the controversies over it.

Some of Nara’s millions of viewers are critical of her embracing the cliché of a traditional housewife and nostalgia toward a timeframe when women’s rights had not evolved to the point where they are now.

She said of her critics, ‘For the sake of my mental health, I can’t indulge in that. I can’t keep correcting people or read things and get frustrated.’

Virginia’s losing streak reached four matches Thursday in Durham, as second-ranked Duke held on for a 3-1 win in a hard-fought ACC battle.

This match was full of action for the entire 90 minutes, as both teams showed that they like to possess the ball and build their attacks starting with their back lines, but also aren’t afraid of attacking with numbers as well. Unfortunately for the Wahoos, the Blue Devils (8-1-0, 3-0-0 ACC) were able to capitalize on their opportunities better.

    HOW IT HAPPENED

It was an exciting, action-filled first half of soccer as both teams were not afraid of pushing numbers while also being mindful of the talent level of these ACC opponents. The two teams were going back and forth, end to end alternating opportunities for the majority of the first half.

The Cavaliers (8-4-0, 1-4-0) had a great early chance in the match when Maggie Cagle made a great run behind Duke’s defenders towards the corner. She was able to turn her defender and dribble along the end line before crossing a ball to Allie Ross, who just couldn’t make the proper connection on the ball to redirect it towards the net.

Moments later, Duke found the ball near midfield and played striker Farrah Walters, who laid the ball back to Maggie Graham, she then played the ball over UVA’s defense. Walters was able to run onto the ball and dribble past sliding Hoos goalkeeper Victoria Safradin just outside of the box. Walters then calmly put the ball into the open net from a difficult angle to open the scoring in the match.

The Hoos had another dangerous opportunity in the 40th minute when Cagle played yet another dangerous ball across the 6-yard box of the Blue Devils. The ball bounced around before finding Yuna McCormack, who took a quick shot that deflected off the standing leg of Duke goalie Leah Freeman. Freeman was just in perfect positioning to help keep the Blue Devils in the lead heading into halftime, 1-0.

Duke was able to strike just 3 minutes into the second half on a great cross by Ella Hase. She was able to pick out the perfect cross with her left foot that found the head of Mia Oliaro on the back post, who headed the ball down into the corner.

The Blue Devils scored on another header in the 65th minute. Duke’s Sophia Recupero played a cross towards the middle of the box where Devin Lynch headed a perfect ball while falling backwards into the corner of the goal for their third in the match.

The Hoos were able to get their one and only goal a little too late. The goal occurred in the 79th minute off of a corner kick taken by Linda Mittermair. Mittermair took an inswinging corner where Meredith McDermott was able to beat out both a Duke defender and goalie Leah Freeman and shoulder the ball into the back of the net.

    GOALS
DUKE: 9’ –  Ferra Walters (Maggie Graham)
DUKE: 48’ – Mia Oliaro (Ella Hase)
DUKE: 65’ – Devin Lynch (Mia Oliaro)

Brady Harty pitching in for Blue Jay football, soccer – Jamestown Sun

JAMESTOWN — Last spring, Ryan Harty approached Jamestown High School head football coach Bill Nelson with a question.

It was about his son, Brady.

“He kind of brought up the idea of Brady kicking and I said, ‘If (Brady) is interested, he’s got to come and talk to me,” Nelson said. “I am not going to go talk to any kids in other sports and try to get them to come out for football. I am not going to go intervene on what soccer is doing. They’ve got a pretty salty squad and they have goals.”

Brady has been a staple on the Jamestown High School boys soccer team for the past six seasons.

After Nelson’s conversation with his father, through no persuasion on Nelson’s part, Brady showed up to talk.

“I decided to kick because I thought it would be fun, and also because some of the guys asked me to kick,” Brady said. “I waited until this year because they never have needed a kicker because they had Louis (Kjellberg) and Sara (Sletto).”

Brady’s first football game of his high school career came against West Fargo Horace on Sept. 6.

“A football crowd is way bigger than a soccer crowd,” Brady said. “Jamestown is a football town, so the energy is completely different. (The first game) it was pretty nerve-wracking. It’s starting to get less nerve-wracking the more I do it though.”

The senior has been in house to adopt kickoff and PAT duties in three of the Jays’ last four games. Brady is 4-for-5 in extra points and 3-for-3 in terms of field goals for 13 total points. Officially, his longest kick has been 31 yards.

“He’s been practicing quite a bit and that kind of materialized over the summer,” Nelson said. “Him being in soccer has changed around our weekly schedule but that has been fine. We communicate daily and we just get our field goal and kickoff set done earlier.”

The longest Brady has kicked a football during practice is 50 yards. Brady said the continual drilling from large distances during football practice has helped with his long ball ability on the pitch.

The Blue Jay soccer team senior captain is the WDA’s second-leading scorer with 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points.

Dual sporting is not exactly new to Brady as he plays soccer year-round and also plays basketball and runs for the JHS track and field team.

“Doing two sports is easy because communication between my coaches and I happen very often,” Brady said. “It has helped me get my work done sooner because I don’t have as much time as I normally do.”

All in all, it seems like everyone is benefiting from Brady’s conversation with Nelson.

“It has worked out well,” Nelson said. “Good to have him on the team.”

  • After the death of Johnny Gaudreau, the Blue Jackets look for better days and better hockey

After the death of Johnny Gaudreau, the Blue Jackets look for better days and better hockey

    Columbus Blue Jackets

Last season: 25-48-9, last in the Metropolitan Division.

COACH: Dean Evason (147-77-27 in four-plus seasons with the Minnesota Wild), hired July 23.

SEASON OPENER: Oct. 15 at Florida.

DEPARTURES: F Alexandre Texier, F Patrik Laine, F Alexander Nylander, D Adam Clendening, coach Pascal Vincent.

ADDITIONS: F James van Riemsdyk, F Sean Monahan, D Jordan Harris, D Jack Johnson.

    GOALIES: Elvis Merzlikins (13-17-8, 3.45 goals-against average, 0.897 save percentage) and Daniil Tarasov (8-11-3, 3.18, 0.908).

    BetMGM STANLEY CUP ODDS: 300-1.

    What to expect

The Blue jackets have missed the playoffs for the last four seasons. Now they have to find their way with a new general manager and a new coach while dealing with the grief of losing their star player, Johnny Gaudreau, in a tragic accident. Columbus has a core of veterans, including captain Boone Jenner, forwards Sean Kuraly and Kirill Marchenko, defenseman Zach Werenski and goalie Elvis Merzlikins, and a lot of younger players who have flashed game-changing talent. Newly acquired forwards James van Riemsdyk and Sean Monahan should provide some veteran leadership and scoring.

    Strengths and weaknesses

The good: Columbus has some depth at center, signing Monahan to a five-year contract. Adam Fantilli will be back. He was having a great rookie year until he suffered a calf laceration from a skate in January. Cole Sillinger had a career-high 32 points in 77 games last season. Kent Johnson is returning from a shoulder injury the ended his season in February. The previous season, he was fifth among NHL rookies with 40 points in 79 games.

The not-so-good: The loss of Gaudreau will be tough for the Blue Jackets to get past, not only on the ice but in the locker room where his No. 13 jersey will hang this season. His 134 points in two seasons with Columbus won’t be easily replaced. One of the Blue Jackets’ best forwards, Patrik Laine, asked to be traded, and the organization complied. The defense last year was a problem. Columbus was the second worst in the league in goals allowed (3.63 per game). Their 76.3% penalty-kill rate was 26th.

    Players to watch

Monahan wanted to come to Columbus to play alongside his best friend Gaudreau. The 29-year-old veteran, if his head is in the right place, could help carry this team forward as the top-line anchor. He signed a five-year, $27.5 million deal with the Blue Jackets in July. Fantilli looked great in his rookie year and could be ready to take a step forward with more responsibility. After a couple of sub-par seasons interrupted by injuries, Merzlikins hopes to establish himself as the undisputed No. 1 goalie again.

Beyonce strips off blue jeans to reveal her underwear in new Levi’s commercial – after being snubbed by country music elites

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter’s song Levii’s Jeans came full circle as she starred in her first commercial for the 171-year-old denim brand set to the Cowboy Carter track.

In the 30-second advert – titled ‘Chapter 1: Launderette’ – the 43-year-old pop diva headed inside a laundry mat while carrying a bucket of what appeared to be diamonds.

Beyoncé then stripped off a $98 pair of Levi’s Premium ‘501 90S Women’s Jeans’ to reveal her white Levi’s panties underneath.

A set of pre-teen twin girls could be seen in the background as Knowles-Carter showcased her 5ft6in figure in the snug boy-shorts and $29.50 Levi’s ‘Essential Sporty T-shirt.’

The 32-time Grammy winner then grabbed her empty bucket and headed to the chairs where she took a seat to patiently wait for her ‘laundry’ to finish.

Melina Matsoukas directed the spot for Beyoncé’s Reimagine campaign, which was a direct remake of the company’s 1985 ad in which a male model throws rocks into a laundry machine in order to ‘stonewash’ his Levi’s.

‘My song Levii’s Jeans celebrates what I believe is the ultimate Americana uniform — something we all wear with pride,’ Knowles-Carter said in the press release.

‘I am honored to work with Levi’s to create quintessential American iconography. Denim on denim has often been seen through a male lens, so this reimagining campaign, which celebrates the iconic female perspective, is important to me. I look forward to exploring innovative ways for our visions to align in empowering women and honoring their strength.’

Levi Strauss & Co. reported a 20% boost on their stock price, a 20% rise in footfall at US stores, and $1.2M in additional revenue following the Texan singer name-dropping them in her country song.

‘The Levi’s brand has and always will be the unofficial uniform for those moving forward in the pursuit of better,’ Levi’s global CMO Kenny Mitchell said in the press release.

‘We believe a key part of that is continuously breaking and building the codes of culture. In collaboration with Beyoncé, we explore the power of reimagination through this campaign, helping us to connect with our fans in new ways and supporting the growth of our women’s business as the definitive denim lifestyle brand.’

Last Thursday, Beyoncé lost all 12 trophies she was nominated for her eighth studio album at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards, hosted by Shania Twain, which aired on NBC/Peacock.

This, after Knowles-Carter shockingly received zero nominations at the 58th Annual Country Music Association Awards, which will air November 20 on ABC/Hulu.
