Drone sightings lead to airspace shutdown at Ohio military base, arrests near Boston airport

BOSTON — More suspected drone sightings in the eastern U.S. led to a temporary airspace shutdown at an Air Force base in Ohio and arrests near Boston’s Logan International Airport, as elected officials increased their push for action to identify and stop the mysterious unmanned flights.

Drones flying around Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, forced base officials to close the airspace for about four hours late Friday into early Saturday, said Robert Purtiman, a base spokesperson.

It is the first time drones have been spotted at the base, one of the largest in the world, and no sightings have been reported since early Saturday, Purtiman said Monday. He would not say how many drones were flying in the area, adding that they ranged in size and that they did not impact any base facilities.

In Boston, city police arrested two men accused of operating a drone “dangerously close” to Logan Airport on Saturday night. Authorities said an officer using drone monitoring technology detected the aircraft and the location of the operators. A third man who fled police remains at large. Authorities said the two men face trespassing charges, and could face more charges and fines.

Boston police urged drone operators to adhere to federal safety guidelines.

“Even small drones pose significant risks, including the potential for catastrophic damage to airplanes and helicopters. Near-collisions can cause pilots to veer off course, putting lives and property at risk,” police said in social media posts.

National security officials have said the drones recently spotted in the eastern part of the country don’t appear to be signs of foreign interference or a public safety threat. But because they can’t say with certainty who is responsible for the sudden swarms of drones — or how they can be stopped — leaders of both political parties are demanding better technology and powers to deal with the drones.

“There’s a lot of us who are pretty frustrated right now,” Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said on “Fox News Sunday,” as drone sightings were being reported in his state. “‘We don’t know’ is not a good enough answer.”

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer on Sunday called for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to deploy better drone-tracking technology to New York and New Jersey to identify the drones and their operators. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said federal officials had agreed to send a drone detection system to the state.

“New Yorkers have tremendous questions about it,” Schumer, the Senate majority leader, told reporters of the drone sightings. “We are going to get the answers for them.”

The federal government did little to answer those questions in its own media briefings over the weekend. “There’s no question that people are seeing drones,” U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Sunday. “But I want to assure the American public that we are on it. We are working in close coordination with state and local authorities.”

Some of the drones reported above parts of New York and New Jersey have turned out to be “manned aircraft that are commonly mistaken for drones,” Mayorkas said. “We know of no foreign involvement with respect to the sightings in the Northeast. And we are vigilant in investigating this matter.”

New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy posted on X Sunday night that he had been out looking for drones with state police in West Trenton, New Jersey. “The public deserves clear answers — we will keep pushing the federal government for more information and resources,” he said, adding that the FBI had briefed him about the sightings in Colts Neck, New Jersey.

Federal aviation authorities have required certain drones to broadcast their remote identification since last year, including the location of their operators. It’s not clear whether that information has been used to determine who is behind the drones plaguing locations over New York and New Jersey. Mayorkas’ office didn’t respond to questions about whether they’ve been able to identify drones using this capability.

Dozens of mysterious nighttime flights started last month over parts of New Jersey, raising concerns among residents and officials. Part of the worry stems from the flying objects initially being spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster.

“It didn’t concern me at first,” said Trisha Bushey, of Clinton Township, New Jersey, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of the Picatinny Arsenal. “I just didn’t think anything of it until it started becoming like every night, the same time, same places.”

Bushey said she thought it was military drills at first, but then officials said the military wasn’t involved.

“And then once they came out and said that they’re not and they don’t know what they are and they’re not foreign, but they’re not ours and they don’t pose a threat, that’s when it becomes concerning,” she told The Associated Press.

Drones are now being reported all along the northeastern U.S.

Some U.S. political leaders, including Trump, have called for much stronger action against the drones, including shooting them down.

Certain agencies within the Department of Homeland Security have the power to “incapacitate” drones, Mayorkas said Sunday. “But we need those authorities expanded,” he said.

Men’s Hockey: Huskies prepared to face No. 3 Boston College in Chestnut Hill

For the final game of the first half of the season, the UConn men’s hockey team will travel to Chestnut Hill to face No. 3 Boston College. After splitting the weekend with UMass Lowell in their last series, the Huskies had a weekend off to rest and recover. Now all hands are on deck for BC.

“I’m excited about the way the team has been playing,” said Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh on Tuesday. “Certainly, the BC game and the two games against Lowell, we played pretty solid hockey for nine periods. We’re looking to continue that trend against the Eagles. We know it’s going to be definitely a tough task at Conte Forum.”

“They are, as I said a couple weeks ago when we were getting ready to play them, there’s not many holes in their game,” said Coach Cavanaugh. “From the goaltender to the experienced defenseman, to the elite forwards they have, they’re just dangerous all over the ice. We’re going to have to play a very solid game managing the puck well and disciplined as well if we want to be successful.”

It’s a midweek matchup in Chestnut Hill, MA, puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4. The Huskies will enter this game with a 7-6-1 overall record and 4-5-1 in Hockey East Action. That puts them in fifth place in the current Hockey East standings.

One of the current strengths for UConn has been their special teams. They have four shorthanded goals on the season so far which is one of the most in the country. Coach Cavanaugh described the team as overall well balanced, especially on the offense. Juniors Tristan Fraser, Ryan Tattle and sophomore Joey Muldowney have been some of the most consistent and effective players on the team thus far. However, almost all of the returns and newcomers on the Ice Bus have been able to make an impact. Muldowney and Tattle are tied for the team lead in points with 10 total. Junior Jake Percivial has been an anchor on offense, having the team-best seven goals and freshman Kai Janviriya leads the team in assists with seven.

Boston College is entering this matchup with a 10-3-0 overall record and 4-2-0 in conference action. They are currently ranked No. 3 in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey / Rink Live polls. A player to look out for on the Eagles is Lukas Gustafsson. The conference announced that the junior was named Hockey East Defender of the Week. Last week against Dartmouth, Gustafsson notched his first multi-point performance of the season. He tallied two assists in Boston College’s win over No. 15 Dartmouth. Both of his assists came a power-play and short-handed goals in the third period of BC’s Friday night matchup

Boston College’s penalty kill is a perfect 30-for-30 this season, they are the only Division I team to now allow a power play goal this year. The Eagles are also undefeated on their home ice this season, they have won the last 16 home games going all the way back to the 2023-24 season. In terms of their offense, Boston College has outscored their opponents 44-24 this season, also including 20-5 in the third period specifically.

The last time the Huskies and Eagles met was on November 15 at Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs, CT. The physical back and forth battle where the Huskies scored three unanswered goals led them to upsetting (at the time No.2) Boston College 5-4.

Now for the rematch, the Huskies will travel up north to face the Eagles in their home arena for their last game of the first half of the regular season schedule. The single game matchup against Boston College is set for Wednesday, Dec. 4. Puck drop is at 7:00 at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, MA and will be available to stream on ESPN+.

  • New Boston Women’s Soccer Team Slammed For Name, Rollout Centered On ‘Too Many Balls’

New Boston Women’s Soccer Team Slammed For Name, Rollout Centered On ‘Too Many Balls’

    Topline

The latest National Women’s Soccer League expansion team debuted in Boston Tuesday and faced a surge of criticism over its name, Bos Nation (“worst name possible,” complained one), and a campaign that jokingly tweaked the city’s history of famous sports teams by complaining it has “too many balls”—which was slammed as male-centered and possibly transphobic.

    Key Facts

The new Boston-based team had its name revealed in an early CBS News report Monday and the choice, Bos Nation, an anagram of Bostonian, was immediately met with a negative reaction only compounded by the team’s official announcement and rollout video Tuesday.

The one-minute video, shared across the team’s social media accounts, says Boston’s legacy is filled with “Trophies, banners, rings and balls. Old Balls. New Balls. Steel Balls. Cold Balls. Even Goat Balls,” a claim accompanied by a clip of former Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady, often called the Greatest Of All Time (G.O.A.T.), saying “wait, what?”

The video then goes on to say, “Maybe there are too many balls in this town,” and suggests a new NWSL team could “add a new chapter to our city’s legacy.”

The website’s rollout was initially accompanied by the URL “toomanyballs.com,” which linked back to the official NWSL Boston website, but that domain appears to have been taken down, and a $35 T-shirt with the slogan “too many balls” has also been removed from the team’s online store.

The announcement was criticized by fans on social media for its overall tone, but also caught the attention of professional athletes including non binary and transgender Seattle Reign player Quinn, who called it transphobic and said it “doesn’t represent the league and is such poor messaging.”

Bos Nation controlling owner Jennifer Epstein told reporters the “whole intent behind the brand was to be inclusionary” and that the team takes the criticisms seriously.

    Chief Critics

Among those who slammed the rollout was NWSL Players Association director Meghann Burke, who told The Athletic she didn’t expect the team to be “so unserious.” “I’m holding out hope that this is an elaborate and ingenious joke and that the real team name and campaign telling us what they’re really about will be rolled out soon,” she said. Meg Linehan, who covers the National Women’s Soccer League for the outlet, called it “the worst NWSL launch I’ve ever seen in the history of the league,” adding, “the most insulting part is how much time they’ve had to release something this bad” (the team was officially announced more than a year ago). On social media, reactions from NWSL fans and players were swift and overwhelmingly negative. Racing Louisville FC player Bethany Balcer tweeted, “They’re gonna delete that video….right???” USA Today sports writer Meghan Hall posted, “Everything I have learned about Bos Nation feels like a giant misstep.” One user on X asked, “Why are we making our NWSL announcement about men?” and another said “If you hired me as a consultant tasked with coming up with the worst name possible for the Boston women’s soccer team I don’t think I’d even have the balls to submit BOS Nation as one of the options.” At the team’s launch party Tuesday, one person carried a cardboard sign reading, “No home for transphobia.”

    Key Background

Boston had a professional women’s soccer team called the Boston Breakers from 2009 until the Women’s Professional Soccer league folded in early 2012. The Breakers then joined the NWSL and played from 2013 to 2017. It was announced in September 2023 that Boston would get a new NWSL team and earlier this year news broke that Utah and San Francisco would also be part of the league expansion to start in 2026. Bos Nation is owned by the all-female Boston Unity Soccer Partners group and investors include Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman and actress Elizabeth Banks. It was reported the Boston franchise paid about $50 million in fees to the NWSL to join. The team will play home matches in White Stadium in Franklin Park, which will get millions in upgrades ahead of opening day. No logo has been revealed for the team, but its main color will be “Championship Green” with accents of “Relentless Raspberry, Loyal Charcoal, Daring Pink, Rise Yellow and Orange Press, which speak to the rich diversity of Boston’s neighborhoods and the team’s values and signal a new era in the city’s sports landscape.”

  • Cowboys beat Steelers 20-17 on Sunday Night Football – NBC Sports Boston

Cowboys beat Steelers 20-17 on Sunday Night Football – NBC Sports Boston

The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers with a come-from-behind 20-17 win early Monday morning ET, after the game was delayed nearly two hours due to a weather delay over lightning.

With a fumble just short of the goal line in the last minute of the game, it looked like the Cowboys would give this game away to Mike Tomlin’s squad, but they were able to recover and eventually secure their third win of the season.

Let’s take a closer look at all that went down on Sunday Night Football:

    There’s drama in Dallas

Whether CeeDee Lamb told Dak Prescott that he threw a “subpar throw” after a bad interception in the end zone or something else, the body language of the encounter and the overall performance by the Dallas Cowboys offense is concerning.

At the end of the first half, Prescott threw a ball aimed for Lamb in the end zone, only for one of the two defenders covering the star receiver to come up with a big interception. Afterword, on the sidelines, an interaction between the two clearly showed that not everything was okay.

Talented rip leaders might say Lamb said to Prescott that he threw a “subpar throw” on the sidelines, but either way, the two most important members of the Cowboys offense are clearly not on the same page.

Overall, the Cowboys offense played a game filled with missed opportunities, led by their recently re-signed quarterback. Not only did Prescott throw an interception in the red zone, he also fumbled in the red zone as T.J. Watt got his 100th career sack and threw a second interception into double coverage in the fourth quarter.

Not to mention, the Cowboys had a field foal attempt blocked at the start of the third quarter.

If it wasn’t for a touchdown on fourth down in the last seconds of the game, which gave the Cowboys the lead at 20-17, the Cowboys would be staring at a sloppy loss and a lot of questions.

Now, they just have a lot of questions.

The Steelers remain in NFL purgatory

What the Steelers revealed with their loss, in which the Cowboys gave them what seemed like every break, that they are the team they were last year, and through most of the recent Mike Tomlin era: A formidable opponent with no real shot at a Lombardi Trophy.

Justin Fields has played good enough, he’s mixed every game so far this season with a combination of a good pass completion rate as well as athleticism, but he could only deliver a great offense with exceptional tools around him. The Steelers don’t have that.

Catch up on the latest scores and standout stats from Week 5 of the 2024 NFL season.

Their defense is pretty good, but their offense can’t match them on the field.

The most points they’ve scored this season is 24, and it was in a loss to the Colts last week.

The Steelers may give Russell Wilson a shot after he recovers from his hamstring injury, or they may not. Frankly, it won’t matter.

Sean Payton gave up on Russell Wilson for a reason, and the Bears traded away Fields for a reason.

Steelers fans would be right to think they are probably better off in the long run by getting the next C.J. Stroud or Caleb Williams, but that appears to be wishful thinking. The team falls to 3-2 and appears headed their way to another 9-10 win season.

Snoop Dogg and Celine Dion gave everyone some Olympics nostalgia

In what was an occurrence that was likely not on anyone’s bingo cards, two stars who made grand appearances at the 2024 Olympics in Paris made surprise appearances on Sunday Night Football.

Celine Dion, who sang from the Eiffel Tower during the Olympics opening ceremony, appeared in a Sunday Night Football intro, where she got a Gatorade cooler dunked on her!

Plus, Snoop Dogg, who joined NBC for its coverage of the Olympics in Paris, joined the NBC crew during the pregame show and halftime Sunday night.

The only thing the broadcast was missing was Tom Cruise and the giant floating Olympic torch for it to be a real 2024 Olympics throwback.

Why does the Olympics only occur for two weeks every four years?

  • Florida State vs. Boston College prediction: College football odds, picks

Florida State vs. Boston College prediction: College football odds, picks

Florida State returns from Ireland hoping to bounce back from a shocking 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.

On Monday night, the Seminoles host Boston College, which begins a new era under coach Bill O’Brien.

While the line remained flat at -10.5 in the opener against Georgia Tech, we’ve seen a massive shift in the odds this week, with Florida State down to -16.5 from an early open of -23.5.

In this preview, I’ll share my plan on how bettors can still recover some value, even at the current price.

Florida State vs. Boston College odds

    Team Spread Moneyline Total
    Boston College +16.5 (-110) +575 o51.5 (-108)
    Florida State -16.5 (-110) -850 u51.5 (-112)
    Odds via DraftKings

    Boston College outlook

When these teams met last season, Boston College came close to an outright win as a 27.5-point underdog, losing, 31-29.

The Seminoles would go on to finish undefeated in the regular season but failed to receive an invite to the College Football Playoffs following an injury to starting quarterback Jordan Travis.

That 2023 Florida State roster was one of the best in school history, considering it had 10 players drafted, just one short of tying the ACC record it set in 2013.

Boston College, meanwhile, returns the 12th-most starters in college football, per 247 Sports, with seven each on offense and defense an two on special teams.

Thus, the cupboards aren’t entirely barren for O’Brien as he returns to college football after recently serving as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

O’Brien is widely regarded as an offensive guru who can inject dynamism into this Eagles team that ranked 115th in pass play percentage (41.49%) last year under former head coach Steve Addazio.

    Florida State outlook

It’s been somewhat of a bumpy ride for DJ Uiagalelei since joining the college ranks. The California product is now playing for his second team in as many years after transferring from Clemson following the 2022 campaign.

Many thought Uiagalelei would be next up in the line of Clemson’s great quarterbacks after Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence.

However, the red-shirt senior has struggled to meet those lofty expectations.

DJ Uiagalelei had an efficient 2024 debut last week against Georgia Tech.

Uiagalelei is a quarterback who is likely to divide opinions. You could argue that Seminoles coach Mike Norvell didn’t have enough trust in Uiagalelei to open up the playbook against Georgia Tech.

Despite being efficient and completing 19-of-27 (70.4%) pass attempts without throwing an interception, Uiagalelei resorted to checkdowns and didn’t push the ball down the field.

He wound up finishing the game with 193 passing yards.

Boston College vs. Florida State pick

The Seminoles received a considerable downgrade in my power ratings as numbers make them closer to a 14-point favorite against Boston College.

Nonetheless, I’d much rather have odds closer to the opening number of +23.5.

Thus, a better option would be to take advantage of some alternate FanDuel lines by parlaying Eagles at +21.5, with the game going over 44.5 points.

    Betting on College Football?

This combination would boost our odds up to +131.

Although I was a bit harsh regarding my critique of Uiagalelei’s performance, it’s worth noting that he did encounter double-digit winds and rainy conditions at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

The weather in Tallahassee should be much more manageable, with clear skies and wind speeds less than five mph.

I expect both teams to have enough offense to surpass this alternate total.

Pick: Same-game parlay (+131, FanDuel): Boston College +21.5 points | Over 44.5 points
