First independently developed jet breaks the sound barrier over the California desert

A sleek white aircraft became the first independently developed jet to break the sound barrier Tuesday, tearing through the air tens of thousands of feet above the Mojave Desert and a crowd of delighted onlookers.

The XB-1 aircraft accelerated to Mach 1.05 within about 11 minutes of taking off, according to Boom Supersonic and live video of the test flight.

The flight at the Mojave Air & Space Port in Mojave, California, took place as the company works to revive supersonic passenger travel, which died with the grounding of the Anglo-French Concorde more than two decades ago.

Boom plans to focus next on the Overture airliner, which it says will carry as many as 80 passengers while moving at about twice the speed of today’s subsonic airliners.

“XB-1’s supersonic flight demonstrates that the technology for passenger supersonic flight has arrived,” Boom founder and CEO Blake Scholl said in a statement. “A small band of talented and dedicated engineers has accomplished what previously took governments and billions of dollars.”

The aircraft, which flew for the first time in March, is made almost completely from lightweight carbon fiber. It uses an augmented reality vision system to help with landing, since its long nose and high-angle approach can make it difficult for pilots to see.

“The future of aviation is here and now,” Amy Marino Spowart, president and CEO of the National Aeronautic Association, said in a statement. “Not only is there hope for faster and better commercial flight, but Boom proves that it can be done sustainably.”

Boom is one of several companies with an eye on supersonic passenger travel. Any new such service will likely face the same hurdles as the Concorde, which flew over the Atlantic and was barred from many overland routes because of the sonic booms it caused.

Sonic booms are heard on the ground when airplanes fly faster than the speed of sound — typically about 760 mph (1,223 kph) near sea level but varying depending on temperature, altitude and other conditions, according to the Congressional Research Service.

As a supersonic plane speeds through the air, it pushes molecules aside with great force, forming a shock wave “much like a boat creates a wake in water,” according to NASA.

Tuesday’s flight happened in the same airspace where in 1947 Charles “Chuck” Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier, piloting an orange, bullet-shaped Bell X-1 rocket plane.

  • Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur breaks silence on expected ban after Mail Sport exclusively revealed the midfielder is set to be hit with HUGE punishment for ‘racial slur’ against his team-mate Son Heung-min

Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur breaks silence on expected ban after Mail Sport exclusively revealed the midfielder is set to be hit with HUGE punishment for ‘racial slur’ against his team-mate Son Heung-min

Rodrigo Bentancur is anticipating a severe sanction from the FA for his alleged racist remark about South Koreans whilst on Uruguayan TV in the summer.

Appearing on the show, Bentancur was asked for a Tottenham player’s jersey and replied, ‘Sonny’s?’ – referencing his team-mate Son Heung-min.

He then added it could be Son’s cousin, too, because ‘more or less they are all the same’.

The FA confirmed that they have charged the South American for an ‘aggravated breach’ of their rules in September. A statement began: ‘Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged with an alleged breach of FA Rule E3 for misconduct in relation to a media interview.’

Mail Sport exclusively revealed on Thursday that the midfielder is likely to receive a seven match ban – but that figure is unconfirmed.

While on international duty with his national side this week, the Tottenham midfielder revealed that he had been informed by his agent that the punishment will be harsh.

‘My agent rang me and told me he had been notified that this was the sanction.’ The 27-year-old said. ‘So far, the club haven’t contacted me. I already knew more or less where it was going.

‘Now the sanction is out, I want to be calm here with the national team. Then we’ll see when it’s time to go back.’

Bentancur has played an important role for Ange Postecoglou this campaign, featuring in 10 of Tottenham’s 11 Premier League games so far, starting seven.

The only league match the Uruguayan has missed this season was Spurs’ home clash with Everton on the second weekend, when Postecoglou’s side triumphed 4-0.

Breaking his silence on the incident earlier this summer, the former Juventus star took to social media to deliver a grovelling apology to Son, insisting to the Spurs captain it was a ‘very bad joke’.

He said: ‘Sonny brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke!

‘You know that I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you brother!’

The South Korean revealed that team-mate Bentancur was close to tears when he apologised over the alleged racial slur.

‘At the moment because of the FA process I can’t say much about it,’ said Son in September. ‘But I love Rodrigo, I love him. We’ve a lot of good memories since we started playing together when he joined.

‘He knew and he apologised straight afterwards. We were on holiday. I was at home. I didn’t even realise what was going on when he sent me a long message and you could feel it was coming from his heart.

‘When we came back for pre-season he felt really sorry, and almost cried when he apologised publicly and personally as well. He felt like he was really sorry. We are all human and all make mistakes and we learn from it.’

‘I love Rodrigo. I love him, I love him,’ the South Korean said when he first broke his silence on the incident in June.

‘He knows he made a mistake but I’ve no problem at all with him. We move on as a team-mate and friend and as a brother. We move on together.

‘We have to wait for what the FA says in their process. I can’t say much but what I can say is I love Rodrigo, there’s nothing more to say.’

Bentancur’s comment came less than a year after a fan was handed a three-year football ban for racially abusing Son.

Robert Garland made the racial gesture at the forward after he was substituted in the 89th minute against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on May 6 2023.

The 44-year-old fan pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment at Highbury Magistrates Court on August 25 and was convicted later that year.

The incident in May 2023 marked the third time Son had been targeted by racial abuse during while representing Tottenham last season.

Bentancur is set to miss a slate of crucial matches for Postecoglou’s side, including Premier League fixtures against Manchester City and Chelsea, as well as the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United on December 19.

  • Couple Breaks Up After Girlfriend Denies Eating Leftovers At A Friends BBQ Party

Couple Breaks Up After Girlfriend Denies Eating Leftovers At A Friends BBQ Party

Being a good host means looking out for all your guests, right? Well, one Redditor found herself feeling awkward at a BBQ hosted by her ex’s friends. The 37-year-old shared her experience, saying it was her first time being invited by ‘ex-boyfriend’s friends’ to join them for a pre-drink/BBQ. Before heading over, her boyfriend casually mentioned, “his friend messaged and said the host feels bad because they are having a BBQ and there may not be enough food for everyone, so if we see food lying around to not feel bad about it.”

At first, the Redditor thought this was cool and “assumed he meant they’d have already eaten and we were joining after.” But when they arrived, things took a turn. It quickly became obvious that no one had touched the food! Out of the 12 invited guests, only eight were seated for dinner while the other four were left hanging. She recalled, “When it came to meal time, the 8 of them sat around a nicely set table and chowed down without making eye contact with us while we stood on the outside of the table chatting. I thought this was so weird, my ex did not, I guess? It was awkward because we were actually starving!”

The story does not end here. The Redditor shared that when the meal was done, the host got up and said “Guys, please help yourself!” to the leftovers. The woman found it odd and while her ex went and got some food on a plate and said “Come eat”, she shared that she “just couldn’t get myself to do it. I don’t even know these people and it was so uncomfortable. I politely said, no thank you! And carried on my conversation. Well, my ex was so bothered by this reaction from me, it ruined the whole evening for him and we actually broke up after that (he broke up with me).”

She further added, “He had originally said we would just eat together at the street festival so I was bothered that he put me in that position and then was mad at me for choosing not to eat and grabbing a snack on the street?”

Feeling shocked and confused, the Redditor, who is from Canada, wondered, “Is this culturally normal behaviour for some people? I live in Canada, and I could never eat in front of a guest in my home and not feed them but is this normal behaviour for some? Was I rude or in the wrong for doing this? Or was he gaslighting me by being mad and making me feel like the rude person for declining food?”

The post went viral on Reddit with more than 13K upvotes and 1.5K comments.

A comment read, “No, this is so weird. To specifically single out guests to only get leftovers while the ‘first’ crew gets their pick?? I don’t know ANYONE who would do this.”

Another added, “I’m with you. I never eat until everyone else at my home has made a plate and I always make sure to have enough food.”

A third wrote, “This sounds like a mess. Why would you invite people to a barbecue whom you can’t feed?”

Another chimed in, “What culture would eating in front of others be anyway??? Very weird and rude, I would’ve left after seeing them all sit down to eat in front of you guys.”

INSIDE SPORT: Premier League fears grow that leading clubs will snub USA summer tournament, while Erik ten Hag breaks bread with media he accused of spreading ‘fairytales and lies’

No Premier League club has yet committed to the second Summer Series in the promised land of the United States.

Insiders say a number of ‘good discussions’ are ongoing over the pre-season tournament and add that they are confident of a positive outcome, as the clock continues to tick towards next July.

However, the lack of any confirmation will do little to ease fears that the top flight’s big guns will shun the competition.

A number of issues are at play. Champions Manchester City and Chelsea – who enjoy huge support in the US – are unavailable thanks to their participation in the Club World Cup (ironically being held across the US).

Then there is the problem of money, and how the top-flight can make this an attractive option for the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, who will not be short of offers.

An intriguing subplot – given the current civil war gripping the league – is the impact any additional revenues would have on a club’s position within the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and whether it is fair that some should benefit in that regard from a tournament organised by the league itself.

It has also been reported that the Premier League is considering a sliding scale, which would see United and Liverpool form part of a four or six-team tournament with £6.3m each up for grabs.

Smaller clubs could expect less based on their share of the US market. Again, this is unlikely to go down well. United and Liverpool may well believe they could drive more revenue should they arrange their own matches while smaller clubs may well have their noses put out of joint.

To make matters worse, FIFA have now revealed Inter Miami will take part in their CWC, despite the fact that the MLS play-offs are yet to start. They have seemingly acted now to ensure Lionel Messi features, whether Miami – who finished top of the Eastern Conference – go on to be crowned champions or not. The competition for eyeballs in the US ahead of the World Cup is intense.

None of this is lost on MLS commissioner Don Garber, who chose his words carefully when Inside Sport asked him recently for his thoughts on the prospect of a Premier League match heading to the US. ‘I hear that the Premier League is interested and that the fans aren’t in support of it,’ he said.

‘It’s up to them. I for one know the value of a regular season game, I know what it means to fans, I know what sovereignty means – that football is based around borders. I believe in the importance of those borders.’

Ten Hag makes annual awards appearance

On Friday he was accusing the media of making up ‘fairytales and lies’ over his future – and on Sunday Erik ten Hag was breaking bread with them.

The under-pressure Manchester United manager attended the Football Writers’ Association’s Northern Awards dinner for the second year in succession – and brought the FA Cup with him. Ten Hag has a decent relationship with the press and his presence at the annual shindig was a welcome sight.

    Pique’s competition pride

Gerard Pique was the headline speaker at the recent Leaders in Sport backslapfest at Twickenham. The former Barcelona man waxed lyrical about the King’s League he created, which sees fans set the rules and streamers own each club.

Pique was effusive in his praise of the disruptor competition’s sponsors, which include adidas. That love, however, did not stop him from wearing a pair of Nike sneakers.

EFL meeting brought forward as Championship clubs consider ticket cap

Inside Sport has learned that the EFL’s annual summer meeting has been brought forward to February – in an attempt to tackle the various financial issues facing the game. Championship clubs will discuss new spending regulations while those in Leagues One and Two will examine amendments to existing arrangements.

While the summer meeting will still take place, it is hoped that the summit will be used as a rubber-stamping exercise. The lack of a redistribution deal with the Premier League and the forthcoming football regulator will also be high on the agenda.

It can also be disclosed that Championship clubs are considering mirroring the Premier League and introducing a £30 cap on tickets for away supporters. A decision is expected early in the new year, but only a small number are thought to be against the move.

Welsh clubs consider new cup territory

There is a growing feeling that clubs across the Severn who compete in the English league are attempting to ‘have their Welsh cake and eat it’, as one exec put it.

Swansea, Cardiff, Wrexham and Newport, who all ply their trade in England, are considering entering the Welsh League Cup – with the winners competing in Europe’s Conference League.

Aside from the fact such qualification could wreak havoc with the Championship fixture calendar, there is also the argument that the revenues European qualification would bring would put give the side in question an unfair advantage over their English counterparts.

Sharing of such revenues was quickly dismissed on a recent call. ‘They’re more than welcome to play in the Welsh Cup – as long as they then go and play in the Welsh League,’ said another official.

Controversial trans athlete’s coach breaks silence amid women’s volleyball outrage

San Jose State’s women’s volleyball coach admits it has been ‘very tough’ to manage the team of late amid controversy surrounding transgender player Blaire Fleming.

Multiple opponents have refused to play against San Jose State in recent months after Fleming, who is in their third season on the team’s roster, was revealed to be a biological male.

The redshirt senior is at the center of a class-action lawsuit filed against the NCAA, which is being accused by more than a dozen female athletes of knowingly violating a law that prohibits sex-based discrimination by allowing a transgender player to compete in women’s sports.

And as the dispute rages on, Fleming – who is yet to publicly come out as trans – sparked further contention on Thursday by sending a ferocious spike off an opponent’s face.

After that game against San Diego State, San Jose State coach Todd Kress expressed his frustration with the ‘outside noise’ regarding Fleming, which has made it difficult to focus on volleyball of late.

Fleming, who plays for San Jose State, was revealed to be transgender earlier this year

‘Concentrating on what we can do on the court has, quite frankly, been very tough lately,’ Kress said. ‘There have been outside forces who have sought to divide our team, our university, our conference and our sport.

‘I know it’s been weighing on the players in our locker room who have put in years of hard work.’

Kress also opened up on the hate mail he and his team have been receiving amid the outrage over Fleming’s gender.

‘Some of it, to be honest, is disgusting,’ he fumed. ‘I’m more worried about our student-athletes and what they receive and how that’s impacting their mental health.’

‘We have an incredible group of young women who are trying to put the controversy aside,’ Kress added. ‘I just have faith that we’ll eventually be able to put the outside noise aside and be able to play for each other and find love for one another again.’

Fleming’s spike on an opponent took place on the SJSU campus with the San Diego State Aztecs leading the San Jose State Spartans 22-12 in the second set.

It was then that the player was set up by teammate Brooke Slusser before rocketing a spike off the face of San Diego State’s Keira Herron.

‘Keira Herron has some pink in her hair and her face is starting to look like she’s matching that as obviously she took the contact,’ one announcer said in the video, which has since gone viral.

Remarkably, Herron kept the play alive, albeit only momentarily before the point ultimately went to the Spartans. And what’s more, she was even laughing afterwards while appearing to tell a teammate that she was ‘fine.’

‘Gotta feel a little embarrassed as she tries to laugh off that last ball,’ the announcer added.

The Independent Council on Women’s Sports (ICONS) has been central to the controversy surrounding Blaire, who was outed as transgender in a September article by OutKick.com.

Fleming has been cleared by San Jose State to play for the SJSU women’s volleyball team for three seasons, joining in 2022.

The Mountain West Conference has been notified by ICONS about athletes’ safety concerns regarding Fleming, who was named in a federal lawsuit filed by the organization. Slusser, the SJSU player who set Fleming up for the aforementioned spike, has since joined that lawsuit.

One motion obtained by DailyMail.com claims that Slusser voiced concerns about safety to school officials. Furthermore, Slusser says she was told by the school to refrain from speaking about the gender identity of teammates.

San Jose State has thus far declined to address the gender identity of any of its players.

‘We are operating our program under the regulations of both the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference,’ read a statement provided to DailyMail.com last month. ‘Our student athletes are in full compliance with NCAA rules and regulations.

‘This sport is hard’… Benoit Saint-Denis breaks his silence on doctor’s stoppage defeat in front of home crowd at UFC Paris

After a tough opening round in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Paris, former French special forces operative Benoit Saint-Denis appeared to be seeing some success on the feet in the second, before he failed to see anything at all.

On the advice of the ringside physician, the highly anticipated main event fight was sadly, but understandably, waved off as the doctors became concerned that the already significant swelling suffered by Benoit Saint-Denis could be hiding some more severe injuries.

Benoit Saint-Denis reacts to doctor’s stoppage loss in UFC Paris main event

After dragging the ‘God of War’ to the ground, Renato ‘Money’ Moicano kept busy as he landed brutal elbows and punches from the top position; with several particularly vicious strikes landing around both eyes of the Frenchman throughout the opening round.

Despite all three judges scoring the second for Saint-Denis, they couldn’t do anything as the fight was taken out of their hands: with the swelling around his eyes being too severe for the UFC doctors to allow the fight to continue.

Speaking to Michael Bisping in the octagon following the fight being waved off, an understandably emotional Benoit Saint-Denis thanked the Paris faithful for their unwavering support as he noted that he felt ‘sleepy’ in the opening round.

“A big thank you to everyone for your support, it was absolutely unbelievable to be here… Unfortunately, in that first round I came out and I was a little bit sleepy, and it allowed him to do enough damage to then play the Matador in the later rounds so I’m sorry for that.”

The ‘God of War’ promised the Parisian crowd that he’d be back “stronger” next time around and that whilst he’s “sorry for that performance, I was proud to represent the flag.”

Saint-Denis has now taken to social media to once again thank his fanbase, and to acknowledge that injuries like those he suffered in Paris last night are simply part and parcel of the sport.

“Not my day, this sport is hard but amazing,” he wrote via his Instagram page.

“Thank you all for your unwavering support. Proud to represent France in the octagon at home. Respect to my opponent for facing me at home and congratulations to him.

“God puts challenges in our path and this one is nothing compared to what I’ve experienced.”

Given the severity of the swelling, Saint-Denis will likely be out of action until early 2025 but when the ‘God of War’ does decide to return to the battlefield, he could do so with Moicano in support.

Renato Moicano invites Benoit Saint-Denis to train with him for next fight

Whilst Moicano is known for being one of the best trash-talkers in the game, the fan-favorite Brazilian would also show respect to Saint-Denis for fighting through such nasty-looking injuries at the post-fight press conference.

“I will be honest with you, I really respect Benoit Saint-Denis [because] what he did in this division – I think he’s very strong, he’s young but I think he needs to work on his game because usually, what makes him dangerous is what makes him vulnerable.

“He puts so much pressure on, if he touches you, he’s going to break you; but if he cannot touch you, it’s easy to see [strikes coming] and watching his fights, the way he stands up and swipes fighters always going 100%.”

Moicano stated that the fight in Paris went exactly how he and his team planned and even invited Benoit Saint-Denis to train with him for his next fight, whenever that may be.

“I was talking to my coach about once I got this guy down, he’s going do everything to swipe me and he’s going to gas out and that’s what happened.

“I invite Benoit Saint-Denis to my gym to train with us and I guarantee he’s going to be another fighter; he needs to get out of his comfort zone in my opinion but he’s a great fighter.”

Moicano currently trains out of American Top Team alongside the likes of possible future opponent Mateusz Gamrot, as well as the likes of Jorge Masvidal, Alexandre Pantoja, and even Saint-Denis’ former opponent Dustin Poirier.

Kate Middleton’s shock new message breaks Meghan Markle

Kate Middleton delighted the nation last week when she announced that she’s completed chemotherapy and is now ‘focusing on staying cancer-free’.

In a poignant video, the Princess of Wales – who was joined by husband Prince William and their three children during a family holiday in Norfolk – expressed her relief at finishing her treatment and revealed she was looking forward to heading back to work.

But while she’s been showered with praise and well-wishes, her estranged sister-in-law has been left with ‘complicated feelings’. Sources have revealed that despite being pleased about Kate’s health update, Meghan can’t help but feel upset over the position she and Prince Harry are in.

‘Meghan is incredibly relieved that Kate’s healthy again, but when it comes to the video announcement, her feelings are pretty complicated,’ an insider tells Closer. ‘There’s still an element of guilt that she and Harry are grappling with. They both have regrets over going so public with their complaints about the family and Kate in particular.

‘When they spoke out, Meghan felt they had no other choice, but now that time has passed and those heightened feelings have cooled off, she realises things could have been handled more discreetly. It’s not something she likes to dwell on, but of course watching Kate’s video brought it all to the surface and it really broke her. It’s undoubtedly agonising for both her and Harry.’

Kate, 42, announced to the world in March that, following abdominal surgery in January, further tests found that cancer had been present and that she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy. In her update last week, she told how the last nine months have been ‘incredibly tough’ for them as a family.

Opening up about navigating ‘the stormy waters’ with William, 42, and their children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, Kate said, ‘The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything. This time has, above all, reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.’

She added that her ‘path to healing and full recovery is long’ before thanking everyone for their support. She concluded, ‘To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness can come light, so let that light shine bright.’

And according to our source, seeing how well the video has been received has only reinforced Meghan’s belief that there’s a ‘double standard’ when it comes to her and Kate.

‘When you compare the way Kate’s treated by the press and the public to the way Meghan’s treated, it’s impossible to deny there’s a huge disparity,’ our insider says.

‘People might argue that Kate has put in her time and earned the respect of the British people but, for Meghan, it really feels like she simply can’t win, no matter how hard she tries. When she sees the way Kate is adored, whereas anything she does is mostly torn down, it does leave her feeling pretty low.’

Earlier this year, Meghan, 43, faced a backlash after sharing a teaser video for the launch of her new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, which showed her cooking, arranging flowers and walking through her and Harry’s Montecito mansion in a ballgown. But fans were left unimpressed, with many slamming her for being ‘out of touch’ and ‘cashing in’ on the royal brand.

Our source adds that Meghan ‘envies’ how easy it seems to be for Kate to connect with the public.

‘Any time Meghan tries to open up and share her truth, the way Kate did in her video, she seems to get slammed for it. Seeing the way Kate’s video has been received by the public and the press has highlighted how differently they are viewed and there’s no getting around the fact that Meghan has been put in one category and Kate in another. It feels very unfair and like there’s simply no way out,’ the source continues.

‘The video has left her feeling like she’s backed into a corner where there’s no way she can have that rapport with the public that Kate does. She’s genuinely happy that Kate is better, of course, but she’s feeling pretty hopeless about the future and this episode has triggered a lot of painful memories.’

Feeling the heat as Earth breaks yet another record for hottest summer

Summer 2024 sweltered to Earth’s hottest on record, making it even more likely that this year will end up as the warmest humanity has measured, European climate service Copernicus reported Friday.

And if this sounds familiar, that’s because the records the globe shattered were set just last year as human-caused climate change, with a temporary boost from an El Nino, keeps dialing up temperatures and extreme weather, scientists said.

The northern meteorological summer — June, July and August — averaged 16.8 degrees Celsius (62.24 degrees Fahrenheit), according to Copernicus. That’s 0.03 degrees Celsius (0.05 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the old record in 2023. Copernicus records go back to 1940, but American, British and Japanese records, which start in the mid-19th century, show the last decade has been the hottest since regular measurements were taken and likely in about 120,000 years, according to some scientists.

The Augusts of both 2024 and 2023 tied for the hottest Augusts globally at 16.82 degrees Celsius (62.27 degrees Fahrenheit). July was the first time in more than a year that the world did not set a record, a tad behind 2023, but because June 2024 was so much hotter than June 2023, this summer as a whole was the hottest, Copernicus Director Carlo Buontempo said.

“What those sober numbers indicate is how the climate crisis is tightening its grip on us,” said Stefan Rahmstorf, a climate scientist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research, who wasn’t part of the research.

It’s a sweaty grip because with the high temperatures, the dew point — one of several ways to measure the air’s humidity — probably was at or near record high this summer for much of the world, Buontempo said.

Until last month Buontempo, like some other climate scientists, was on the fence over whether 2024 would smash the hottest year record set last year, mostly because August 2023 was so enormously hotter than average. But then this August 2024 matched 2023, making Buontempo “pretty certain” that this year will end up hottest on record.

“In order for 2024 not to become the warmest on record, we need to see very significant landscape cooling for the remaining few months, which doesn’t look likely at this stage,” Buontempo said.

With a forecasted La Nina — a temporary natural cooling of parts of the central Pacific — the last four months of the year may no longer be record-setters like most of the past year and a half. But it’s not likely cool enough to keep 2024 from breaking the annual record, Buontempo said.

These aren’t just numbers in a record book, but weather that hurts people, climate scientists said.

“This all translates to more misery around the world as places like Phoenix start to feel like a barbecue locked on high for longer and longer stretches of the year,” said University of Michigan environment dean and climate scientist Jonathan Overpeck. The Arizona city has had more than 100 days of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) weather this year. “With longer and more severe heat waves come more severe droughts in some places, and more intense rains and flooding in others. Climate change is becoming too obvious, and too costly, to ignore.”

Jennifer Francis, a climate scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Cape Cod, said there’s been a deluge of extreme weather of heat, floods, wildfires and high winds that are violent and dangerous.

“Like people living in a war zone with the constant thumping of bombs and clatter of guns, we are becoming deaf to what should be alarm bells and air-raid sirens,” Francis said in an email.

While a portion of last year’s record heat was driven by an El Nino — a temporary natural warming of parts of the central Pacific that alters weather worldwide — that effect is gone, and it shows the main driver is long-term human-caused climate change from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, Buontempo said.

“It’s really not surprising that we see this, this heat wave, that we see these temperature extremes,” Buontempo said. “We are bound to see more.”
