A gala ceremony held at the Cordis Auckland celebrated New Zealand and Pacific winners of the 2024 HM Awards* on November 2.

Over 200 attendees gathered to recognise the top people, properties and hospitality projects across Aotearoa and the Pacific.

Hospitality Business has selected a number of star winners to highlight and plans to celebrate key industry people and projects over the next few weeks, starting today with concierge award winner:-

Rick Karsten – Chief Concierge Grand Millennium Auckland,

Rick Karsten – Chief Concierge Grand Millennium Auckland. Les Clefs d’Or is an elite international association of hotel concierges dedicated to exceptional service and hospitality. Founded in France in 1929, the organisation’s name means “The Golden Keys,” symbolising the golden key-shaped lapel pins worn by members.

    Q. How did you become a Concierge?

    A. I’m originally from The Netherlands, and my journey to becoming a Concierge began in 2013 at Pullman Auckland, where I started as a “Welcomer.” It was there that I was first introduced to Les Clefs d’Or after witnessing a fellow team member receive their prestigious keys.

I was fascinated by the role, and quickly became intrigued by what it takes to become a part of this elite network.

I subsequently joined SKYCITY Auckland as a Duty Manager which introduced me to all areas of the hotel business and allowed me to learn from some of the most influential figures in the industry. SkyCity’s Chief Concierge, Shaun Ryan encouraged me to  consider becoming a concierge and I took up the opportunity on May 25, 2016.

    Les Clefs d’Or

Shaun became an invaluable mentor, guiding me through the intricacies of the Concierge world. Under his leadership, I expanded my network and forged key relationships with stakeholders and suppliers. I was invited to attend the Les Clefs d’Or bi-monthly meetings, where I began to understand that being a Concierge is more than just a job — it’s a lifestyle.

In November 2018, I received my Les Clefs d’Or keys, a milestone that marked a significant achievement in my Concierge journey. The ceremony was made even more special by the presence of Mr Derek Fenn, the Founder of Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand, who attended as a guest. This moment truly embodied the spirit of the Les Clefs d’Or motto: In Service Through Friendship.” The sense of camaraderie and mutual respect among the Les Clefs d’Or community was evident, and I felt incredibly proud to be part of such a distinguished group of professionals.

    Q. Could you explain the role of the Concierge?

A: A great Concierge is, in many ways, the glue that holds a hotel together. Having worked at seven different hotels throughout my career, I’ve gained a comprehensive understanding of the critical role the Concierge plays in the hotel industry. In my current position, my responsibilities span far beyond traditional guest services. I focus on building new business relationships, developing talent, identifying opportunities to strengthen our team, and establishing connections with key stakeholders in the hospitality and tourism sectors. This includes working closely with partners across Auckland, such as Waiheke Island, Rotorua, and Matakana, to enhance our brand’s presence and drive growth.

We facilitate smooth communication between departments and ensure a seamless guest experience. A Concierge also nurtures valuable relationships with tour providers and other external partners, ensuring the hotel’s offerings remain top-notch. Furthermore, as Chief Concierge, I collaborate with my General Manager to identify revenue-generating opportunities and design marketing strategies aimed at boosting sales.

At the heart of it, the Concierge is a brand ambassador, continually striving to create exceptional experiences for guests and elevate the hotel’s reputation within the market. It’s a role that requires a unique skill set, from networking and problem-solving to empathy and an unwavering commitment to service excellence.

    Q. Do you have any advice for people seeking to become a Concierge?

    A. If you’re considering a career as a Concierge, I recommend watching the film The Grand Budapest Hotel — it’s a charming, albeit exaggerated, portrayal of what the role can be. However, the key takeaway is the importance of building relationships and embracing the adventure that comes with the job.

It’s not a quick road, but with passion, dedication, and an openness to learn, you’ll build lifelong friendships, gain invaluable knowledge, and create memorable experiences for yourself and others. The Concierge lifestyle is one of constant learning and connection, and if you commit fully, you’ll be rewarded in ways you never imagined.

    Q. What do you do outside of your work?

    A. Outside of my role as a Concierge, I’ve been actively involved in creating and growing Hospitality Circle NZ, a concept designed to foster connections between various industries through the principles of “Manaakitanga” — the Māori concept of hospitality and caring for others.

Our first event, held at LyLo Auckland’s Miss Lucy’s, saw 70 people from diverse industries come together to build relationships, share ideas, and enjoy a fun evening. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees noting how valuable it was to meet people outside of their usual circles. This spirit of connection and community is what Hospitality Circle NZ is all about, and I’m excited for its future.

    Madrid 2025

Currently, I am proud to serve as Chief Concierge at Grand Millennium Auckland, a role I have truly enjoyed since joining the team. The support I have received from the Millennium Group, and particularly from General Manager James Billing, has been instrumental in my success. Their encouragement has not only empowered me to excel in my role but has also enabled me to reach one of my most significant professional milestones — being named 2024 HM Awards Aotearoa-Pacific Concierge of the Year.

One of the most exciting opportunities the Millennium Group has provided me is the chance to attend the 69th UICH International Les Clefs d’Or Congress in Madrid in 2025. This opportunity is a dream come true, and I am deeply grateful for the Group’s support in making this possible. The Congress will be an incredible chance to connect with international colleagues, share experiences, and further develop my skills as part of the global Les Clefs d’Or community. I am truly excited for the chance to represent both my hotel and the Millennium Group on this prestigious platform.

  • Shun flamboyant lifestyle, Osinbajo tells business owners

Shun flamboyant lifestyle, Osinbajo tells business owners

Former Nigerian Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, says the flamboyant lifestyle of Nigerian business owners is unsustainable for the businesses they run.

Osinbajo said this on Thursday in Lagos during his keynote address at the 2024 Women in Management, Business and Public Service conference.

The two-day conference which is in its 23rd edition is themed ‘Dream, Dare and Do’ and is chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola.

The former VP expressed concern that the investible resources of the business owners are spent on maintaining appearances.

He said, “Trying to keep up an image of success affects a major plank of business. The lifestyle of business owners is a problem, in my own opinion, for Nigerian businesses. There is a huge pressure that Nigerian business owners have which probably business people elsewhere do not have.

“To maintain a perception of success that is usually above the means of the business. If the business cannot support your lifestyle. There is pressure to look and spend as though you are very successful even though your business is only a few years old. The pressure is worsened by the unrealistic lifestyle of allegedly successful people on social media and an environment where most wealth is unexplained or unexplainable and where so many people are rich before becoming business persons.

“There are so many people who were wealthy already before becoming business owners and you are looking at those people and thinking surely, ‘I should be like those people.’ Consequently, every CEO or middle cadre of business enterprises feel the need to buy the best cars, the same cars that the richest man in Africa drives and they travel first class. So, a lot of the investible resources are spent on maintaining appearances.”

Osinbajo also went on to challenge the elites of Nigeria to champion the cause of the poor majority.

“A society or nation rises or falls by the sense of responsibility of its elites. That elite could be political, business religious and anywhere in the world, it is this class that determines the economic, moral and even the political direction of their nation. What they hold dear is what society considers important and what they disavow is what is rejected. They are the opinion moulders.

“Among the successful people here, if you look at the kind of conversations that go on, it is about how much local and international fares cost; the cost of school fees, private schools for children abroad, the cost of medical, especially medical abroad, now the cost of fueling more than one car and possibly visas to Dubai.

Now, these are important to us and in our interactions with those we expect to make a difference, there are perhaps some of the issues we raise and hope would be addressed. But the other 9.99 per cent of 200 million of us are more concerned with matters of survival, cost of public transportation, food, basic health care, accommodation, justice etc.

“My point is that the elite must be the mediator for these people. Alongside their concerns, they must fight for social welfare schemes;  health care, and school feeding programmes for children in public schools because these are matters that politicians are required to address but often do not and they don’t even have an elite that can put them under pressure.  Your collective voice and action for the education of girls in the north for example can affect the destiny of our nation. Today, we have over 67 per cent illiteracy in the north, a country with half of its population socially and economically disadvantaged by illiteracy will find development difficult if not intractable,” he stated.

In her opening speech, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Ogunsola charged participants not to stop the level of dreams but to dare to achieve the dreams.

She said, “You have come to a conference that was set up by dreamers but dreaming is dreaming and nothing will happen if you do not dare to move forward, to dare to think that it might just be possible. Daring is about having the courage to step into unfamiliar territory, face challenges and take risks. We are notoriously risk-averse. Leadership is never a safe journey. It comes with resistance and people will tell you you cannot do it. Fear of failure, fear of loss of reputation. If you die without achieving your dreams or at least trying to achieve them, you will die with regrets and that is unforgivable.”

Ogunsola went on to urge the gathering of women to squash the ‘ANTs’ in their minds.

“ANTs are Automatic Negative Thoughts and the greatest thieves of your dreams. Dream dreams that scare you and challenge you. We must dream of goals that we don’t even know where the money will come from.  You’re not alone, you will meet other dreamers. You’re here today to give wings to your dreams.”

She added that Nigeria needs women in every sphere of endeavour.

“It needs us to be present where decisions are taken,” she affirmed.

The Chairman of the WIMBIZ Board of Trustees, Bisi Adeyemi, called on the women to take advantage of the conference to further their dreams.

Business News | How to Choose the Right Credit Card for Your Lifestyle?

    VMPL

New Delhi [India], November 6: A Credit Card can be a powerful financial tool when used correctly. However, selecting the right Credit Card for yourself can be a tedious process, especially without prior research.

Also Read | Deepak Borkar, Veteran Percussionist of Hindi and Marathi Cinema, Passes Away; Shantanu Moitra, Devaki Pandit Pay Tribute.

Without careful consideration, you might choose a card that does not align with your financial goals or lifestyle. This can lead to unnecessary expenses, and you may also miss out on many benefits.

This guide offers a comprehensive overview of the factors that you need to consider when choosing a Credit Card so that you can pick one that matches your preferences and spending habits.

Also Read | Salesforce India Revenue Grows 36% at INR 9,116 Crore in FY24, Engineering Software Major Expands Footprint.

How do you choose a Credit Card that aligns with your lifestyle?

    1. Understand your spending habits

Before choosing a Credit Card, it is best to introspect your spending patterns. Analysing your spending habits can help you identify where you are bound to spend more and the kind of card you will need. This also helps you keep track of the amount you spend on a monthly basis, laying down a framework for your budget planning.

    2. Look for rewards and benefits

Credit Cards offer an array of reward programs that cater to different preferences. You can use these to your advantage, especially if you can make use of certain rewards frequently.

For example, if you need to travel often due to work or for personal reasons, getting a Credit Card with travel points or additional benefits like access to airport lounges can help you take advantage of perks that make your travel more comfortable.

    3. Consider the annual fee

While some Credit Cards require you to pay an annual fee, there are Credit Cards that are free. The annual fee is a yearly charge that is associated with maintaining your card membership. When considering a card with annual fees, you need to weigh the different benefits the card offers against its annual costs. If the rewards and perks significantly outweigh the fee, the card might be a good investment.

However, if you are an infrequent user and don’t plan on using the Credit Card often, a card with no annual fee might be a more appropriate choice.

    4. Consider the interest rates

Just like annual fees, interest rates can impact the overall cost of your Credit Card. The annual percentage rate (APR) determines how much you will be charged in interest if you carry a balance on your card. If you can pay your balances in full every month, interest rates might not be a major concern for you.

However, if you anticipate carrying a balance, you should prioritise a card with a low APR and minimise your interest charges.

    5. Analyse the credit limit you will need

The credit limit is the maximum amount you can borrow on your Credit Card. When choosing a credit limit, it is essential that you consider your spending habits and financial goals. If you are looking to build or improve your credit score, you should opt for a Credit Card with a higher credit limit.

However, this is beneficial only if you maintain a low utilisation ratio, that is, the percentage of your credit limit that you are using.

    Wrapping it up

Choosing the right Credit Card for your lifestyle requires careful consideration of various factors. By analysing your financial goals and spending habits, you can determine your desired credit limit and select a card that aligns with your needs.

Business News | Wellness Lifestyle Launches Jalasya: An End-to-End Technology Stack for Regenerative Wellness Estates, Rooted in Blue Economy Principles

    ATK

Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], November 4: Wellness Lifestyle (WL) announces the global launch of the Jalasya technology stack. Built on the Blue Economy framework pioneered by Gunter Pauli, author of the acclaimed “The Blue Economy” book series, the Jalasya stack uses an open-source format that can be continuously upgraded and aspires to set new standards in regenerative wellness developments and operations.

Developed over five years, Jalasya was recently selected by the ayushca estates of the IIT Alumni Council for their upcoming campuses in Goa, NCR, and Madhya Pradesh. Jalasya was also recently featured in the book, “Accelerate Your Journey” which outlines the sustainability philosophy of the Climate Resilience Platform – a consortium of Gunter Pauli’s ZERI, Development Alternatives and Wellness Lifestyle Foundation. The consortium is led by Dr Ashok Khosla, a sustainability pioneer widely recognised for his contributions to the field and for popularising the concept on international platforms. Early in his career, Khosla collaborated with Professor Roger Revelle, co-developing the groundbreaking environmental course “Natural Sciences 118” at Harvard, which shaped many students’ perspectives, including that of Nobel Laureate Al Gore. This course led to The Survival Equation, one of the first definitive textbooks on environmental sustainability.

“The wellness movement has the potential to influence behaviours and choices,” said Christina Watson, spokesperson of Wellness Lifestyle (WL). “We can create awareness, inspire change; and also, be the change. Jalasya, our pioneering Thalasso-Aqua Technology Stack, was developed to be the change we wish to see in the world. At WL, we are incorporating the Blue Economy principles as fundamental to all our wellness projects for self-sufficiency, ecological responsibility, and social equity and contribute to building hyper-local economies”.

Wellness Lifestyle (www.wellnesslifestyle.com) developed the Jalasya stack in partnership with the start-ups supported by the IIT Alumni Council, and it goes beyond advocacy to action. One of the startups that contributed to developing the paradigms embodied in the stack is the Prakriti Prerna Foundation (PPF). PPF was started three years ago with a revolutionary vision of ‘flourishing forests and thriving wildlife’. The PPF pilot projects are distributed over a 100 sqkm area adjoining the 1500 sqkm Bandhavgarh forest in central India.

According to award-winning climate change warrior, IIT Alumni Council Life Fellow and PPF Founder, Srinivas Rachakonda, “We have seen thirty feet high trees grow in less than thirty months and organic farms producing up to 150 tons per acre per annum of fruits and 40 tons per acre per annum of vegetables. A prudent combination of traditional wisdom and cutting-edge technologies achieved this performance. Several of these protocols and technologies are now part of the Jalasya stack for the biodynamic farming module of the ayushca campuses. We are happy to have been able to contribute to its development.”

The Jalasya stack is relevant to all kinds of real estate formats. Founder of Beeja Luxury, Geetika Saigal, a TED speaker and celebrity author, remarked, “As an Advisor to the ayushca Goa team, I get to meet so many high-net-worth individuals excited about luxury wellness properties in the USD 5 million+ bracket. But in reality, the truly discerning buyers won’t commit unless developers genuinely deliver on their promises–real sustainability, wellness facilities, and Jalasya-level infrastructure. That’s what makes the difference.”

Requests for more information or interviews with the Jalasya team members may be sent to contact@wellnesslifestyle.com.

Delhi High Court Flags Expired Products Being Repackaged: “This Cannot Be A Business”

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday expressed concerns over the sale of expired food products that are reintroduced in the markets after repackaging and re-branding with new expiry dates and said that people cannot be made to consume “adulterated” food items. The high court said no one can be allowed to sell expired items and this cannot be a business. “People cannot be having adulterated food in Delhi. Give us suggestions on how this can be tackled,” a bench of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said. The bench was hearing a public interest litigation which was initiated on its own after several such instances of expired products being repackaged with new expiry dates came to light.

Advocate Shwetasree Mazumdar, who was assisting the court as amicus curiae, submitted her report and suggested that a QR code could be generated by the manufacturers for all packed food items which would help in tracking the original expiry dates of the products. She said legislation dealing with the issue is already in place but the penalties prescribed for violations are not deterrent and they be revisited to ensure greater deterrence.

“Food business operators be directed to mark all food products with a unique alphanumeric code or a QR code that is identifiable by an FSSAI representative by cross-reference to a centralised database, which will reveal the batch number and expiry date of a product immediately and on site, to obviate testing and sampling to ascertain whether expiry dates and other information on the label has been tampered with,” the amicus submitted.

She added that this would be similar to the mandatory QR code requirement imposed by the Union Health Ministry for the tracking and tracing of certain identified pharmaceutical products and would assist in taking expeditious action against violators. The court asked the authorities to submit suggestions on how they were planning to ramp up the sample collection and testing. The bench directed the Delhi Police to file a fresh status report in the matter and asked certain alleged counterfeiters, who were found to be selling expired chocolates by re-packaging the same, to be personally present in the court on the next hearing.

“You cannot be selling expired food items. This cannot be a business. Ask your clients to remain personally present in court next time,” the bench told the counsel for the alleged counterfeiters. The court had earlier issued notice to the central government, Delhi government, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Delhi Police, seeking their response on the matter.

The suo motu PIL was initiated after Justice Prathiba M Singh referred the matter to the division bench to be taken up on the judicial side. Justice Singh was hearing a civil suit filed by the Hershey Company, a well-known chocolate manufacturer, seeking an injunction before the Diwali period against certain rank counterfeiters from selling expired chocolates by re-packaging the same. She found that the counterfeiters had knowledge of and access to Hershey’s mark and packaging and had blatantly copied them misrepresenting their expired and counterfeit chocolates as the complainant’s products.

The single judge, prima facie, had concluded that the suit revealed an extraordinary situation involving public health, particularly relating to food products. The division bench, in its January order, had said, “From the order dated December 19, 2023, passed by the single judge, it is apparent that there is a coordinated and systematic mechanism in place by which the expired products are being re-packaged/ re-branded with new expiry dates and are being introduced into the markets.”

    Rama Murthy Thyagarajan Journey:

Rama Murthy Thyagarajan founded the Shriram Group in the 1960s. Rama’s story shows that success is not always the material wealth you own but also the positive impact you are making. His life is a testament to humility, integrity, and the importance of thinking beyond traditional boundaries, offering an inspiring example for others to follow.
