Looking back on history, the in-conference rivals date back to 2001. From their first meeting to a 2010-2011 clash, Connecticut boasted a winning 17-9-6 record over Northeastern. In their final meeting of the 2010-2011 season, Northeastern flipped the script and UConn went on to lose over 35 games from 2011 to 2023. However, the Huskies snapped the streak last November to come out on top 3-0 and proceeded to boast a 3-0 winning record over Northeastern last season.
Coming into this matchup, Connecticut has all the momentum on their side. After taking a pair of wins last weekend against Holy Cross, the team lands at No. 10 in the rankings. As for the matchup against the Crusaders, shooting was not an issue as the Huskies attempted 70 combined shots between games one and two. Finding the back of the net, however, was the problem, as they only scored two apiece in both matches.

Holy Cross put up a combined total of 32 shots in the two-game series, which is just half of what Connecticut produced. Dominating in the net, the impressive goalkeeper duo Tia Chan and Megan Warrener saved 31 shots against the Crusader. Chan started game one, allowing Holy Cross’ only goal to get past her. Making changes to the lineup the next day, Warrener finished the series. It should be interesting to see who head coach Chris MacKenzie puts in as the goalkeeper come game time, as both options are great.
In addition, watching out for Claire Murdoch is a must for Northeastern. After contributing a goal in both contests against Holy Cross, the freshman was named this week’s Hockey East Rookie of The Week. In both matches, Murdoch combined for 12 total shots, keeping the goalie on her feet.

The No. 3 seeded University of Scranton field hockey team has earned the right to play in Saturday’s Landmark Conference Championship game after their 4-0 semifinal victory at No. 2 seeded Catholic University on Wednesday night. The Royals will go on the road to face top seeded Susquehanna Univeristy on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM.

The championship game will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2:00 PM at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove, PA.

The Royals defeated Drew University 5-2 in the first round and earned a 4-0 win against Catholic in the semifinals.
Scranton leads the Landmark in both goals per game (3.38) and goals against average (.90), a feat they have achieved in back-to-back seasons.
Head coach Colleen Moyer is in her 20th season at the helm of Scranton. She has led her Royals to their seventh Landmark Conference Championship appearance, and is looking for her third career championship victory.
Royals to Watch
Graduate student Katie Redding currently leads the Landmark Conference in goals (16) and points (42), and is tied for second in assists (10). Redding has tallied three goals and one assist in the two playoff games this season.
Bridget Abraldes is second in the nation and leads the Landmark with her 15 assists in her graduate student season. She has also recorded 10 goals and is second in the conference with 35 points. Abraldes has tallied one goal in the two playoff games this season.
Susquehanna

Susquehanna advanced to the championship after defeating No. 4 seed Moravian on Wednesday night, 2-0.
The reigning champion River Hawks earned the No. 1 seed for the second season in a row in 2024. They are second in goals per game (2.63) and in goals against average (1.05), trailing Scranton in both categories.
Head coach Allison Fordyce is in her seventh season at the helm of Susquehanna. Her River Hawks team is looking for their third Landmark Conference title under her leadership and their second in as many seasons.
River Hawks to Watch
Senior Kari Schmidt is the reigning Landmark Defensive Player of the Year and leads Susquehanna with 25 points on the season on nine goals and seven assists. She ranks in the top 10 in the Landmark in goals, assists, points and game-winning goals.
Sophia Prata is tied for the team lead with nine goals in 2024. The senior has recorded 20 points on those nine goals with two assists.
Championship Rivalry
The championship history between these two teams dates back to 2018 when the No. 3 seeded Susquehanna won their first Landmark title in program history after beating the No. 4 seeded Scranton 2-0 in Selinsgrove, PA.
In 2019, the No. 1 seeded Royals returned the favor, defeating the No. 3 seeded River hawks 4-1 in Scranton.
In 2023, the River Hawks bested the Royals in a thrilling contest that saw Susquehanna win its second ever Landmark Title in a shootout victory in Selinsgrove, PA.
Inside the Series
Scranton leads the all-time series 26-20-2. The Royals are 9-8 against the River Hawks since 2010
Susquehanna has won three straight games against Scranton, a streak that began last season.
Earlier this season, the River Hawks defeated the Royals 2-1. Kari Schmidt scored two goals in the first quarter for Susquehanna as they held a 2-0 advantage through three quarters. Scranton’s lone goal came in the fourth quarter from junior Annie Shaw.
The Royals last win against Susquehanna came in the regular season of 2022, a 2-0 win for Scranton.

WASHINGTON, DC — The University of Scranton field hockey team advanced to the Landmark Conference Championship after a 4-0 victory against Catholic University in Wednesday night’s Landmark Semifinal contest at Cardinal Stadium.
The Royals will return to the championship for the second consecutive year, facing Susquehanna in a rematch of the 2023 Landmark Conference Championship.
How it Happened
The Royals jumped on the board with 4:16 to go in the first quarter when graduate student Elle Collins sent a perfect pass through the Cardinals’ defense to graduate student Katie Redding who flicked it past goalie Ella Bowman to give the Royals an early 1-0 advantage.
Scranton added to their lead in the second quarter, converting on their fourth penalty corner attempt of the game with 11:38 to go in the half. Junior Maggie Keys received the insertion from senior Lauren Franco and shot it toward the cage, and it was Franco who was there to redirect Keys’ shot past Bowman to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.
Catholic threatened with a penalty corner attempt two minutes into the fourth quarter, but junior Kiera Lamb made a brilliant defensive save, keeping the Cardinals off the board.
Redding struck again with 9:29 left in the fourth quarter. Junior Annie Shaw carried the ball to the corner of the circle, pulling Bowman out of the cage, before connecting with Redding who poked it in for her second goal of the night.
The Royals added one more goal in the final two minutes of the contest as senior Reagan Dolan fired a shot on a penalty stroke attempt into the top right corner of the cage to make it 4-0 Scranton.
Senior goalie Gianna Travia and the Royals’ defensive unit limited Catholic to just five shots in the game, and they defended all ten of Catholic’s penalty corner attempts to perfection. This shutout was the eighth of the year for Scranton.
Top Performers
Redding led the team with her two goals in the first multi-goal playoff game of her career.
Franco has now scored one goal in both playoff games in 2024.

Scranton held a 13-6 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.

SIOUX FALLS — The Dell Rapids football team finds itself one win away from its third straight appearance in the 11A state championship game, but for the Quarriers, the road to the DakotaDome doesn’t get any easier this week.
The gauntlet of a highly competitive 11A field continues, as second-seeded Dell Rapids takes on No. 3 seed Lennox in an 11A semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday at Dell Rapids High School.
The Quarriers (8-2) head into the game after knocking off seventh-seeded Dakota Valley in a 17-6 decision Thursday in Dell Rapids. It was a game in which they limited the Panthers’ big-play ability, while senior Cole Ruesink got a kickoff return for a touchdown and a rushing touchdown to lift Dell Rapids to a gritty win.
“I thought our defense played at a championship level all game and kept Dakota Valley in check most of the game,” Quarriers coach Derek Genzlinger said. “Our special teams also played at a high level and played a huge role in winning the game.”
This season, Ruesink leads the charge for a Dell Rapids team that is averaging 5.8 yards per rush in a masterfully run Wing-T offense.
Ruesink has 1,167 yards and 14 TDs on 153 carries, while senior Quinn Carr has chipped in 467 yards and seven scores on 74 totes.

Defensively, Ruesink has 28 tackles and a team-high eight interceptions, while junior Kenny Swanson’s 57 stops paces the Quarriers.
On the other side, the Orioles (8-2) are feeling confident after handing No. 6 seed Canton a 50-0 shellacking Thursday in state quarterfinal action.
Lennox is led by a group of nine seniors, including 6-foot-3, 210-pound quarterback Boston Katzer. Meanwhile, junior Tate Gerdes is heavily involved in the Orioles’ rushing attack.

When the two teams take the field Friday night, it’ll be just 15 days removed from the last time they met. That game ended with Dell Rapids claiming a 26-12 triumph on the road in both teams’ regular-season finale.
“They are a team that has some great athletes at all spots on the field,” Genzlinger said about the Orioles. “We have to find a way to keep them in check as much as possible. It all starts with keeping their QB in the pocket and controlling where he can move. He extends plays very well from that standpoint.
“They play at a faster pace than any other team we play, so getting lined up is important. Defensively, they tackle very well and make you earn every yard.”

Unbeaten SFC hosts West Central
In the other 11A semifinal, top-seeded Sioux Falls Christian (10-0) aims to keep its perfect season on the line, hosting No. 4 seed West Central (7-3) at 7 p.m. Friday at Bob Young Field.
The Chargers opened the playoffs Thursday with a 58-23 win over Rapid City Christian in which they had their best scoring output of the season.
“I really liked that we played a clean game,” SFC coach Jared Smith said about the state quarterfinal win. “We didn’t have any penalties, and that’s something that really helps an offense stay on pace.”
Defensively, the Chargers now have 29 takeaways, which is the most ever by an 11A team in a single season.

Meanwhile, senior Lincoln Prins continues to efficiently guide SFC’s offense. The 6-1 signal caller has bested his own single-season school records in both passing TDs (23) and yards (1,803), which is especially impressive considering blowouts have allowed him to watch from the sidelines in the second half of several games this season.
The Trojans enter Friday’s game on the heels of a nailbiter last week, a game in which they eked out a 14-6 win over fifth-seeded Madison.
A trio of seniors lead the way for West Central in quarterback Caden Alfson, running back Aiden Bartmann and running back Karsen Wilde, and Smith understands that physicality is an essential element to the Trojans’ success.

“Offensively, they will want to establish their run game and sustain long drives to limit our possessions throughout the game,” Smith said. “We would like to get them off schedule on first and second down and try to get them off the field as soon as possible.
“Throughout the season, the WC defense has given some different looks versus some similar things that we do. Our players will need to be prepared for the variety of ways they may align and defend our offense.”

FARGO — Jack Primus caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Frankie Meagher with 12 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift Upsala-Swanville to a 19-12 victory against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa for the Minnesota Class 1A, Section 4 football championship at the Fargodome.
Upsala-Swanville won its first section title since 2014. Primus’ TD catch broke a 12-12 tie.
Parkers Prairie and West Central Area, Staples-Motley and Osakis, Barnesville and Hawley and Fergus Falls and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton are also slated to play for section titles.

Hands up who had heard of Régis Le Bris before the summer? Be honest … yeah, thought so. Sunderland supporters could have been forgiven for feeling a little underwhelmed at the appointment given their club had been linked (somewhat unrealistically) with Graham Potter and Steve Cooper, as well as the elusive Anglo-Belgian tactician Will Still. Le Bris landed in the Stadium of Light instead and even those familiar with his work harboured major doubts, given he’d just been relegated from Ligue 1 with Lorient. It’s easy to dig at Sunderland’s owners in the post-Netflix era but perhaps Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, the 27-year-old billionaire owner, has struck gold this time. So forget your Simon Graysons, your Chris Colemans, your Alex Neils, your Lee Johnsons – how many have we forgotten? – under Le Bris, the Black Cats are five points clear at the top after 12 games.
How has the new manager done it? Largely by putting faith in youngsters Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg while sticking to a “structured” 4-3-3 with the onus on possession, according to midfielder Dan Neil, who is one of many shouldering added responsibility in the new setup. “He has definitely brought new ideas, new ways of playing,” tooted the 22-year-old on Le Bris, who is fast becoming a hero on Wearside. The crowds are back, too, with more than 40,000 flocking to the Stadium of Light every other week to witness the magic. This weekend, Sunderland visit struggling QPR and you’d be a fool to bet against them.
The significance of that five-point lead at this stage of the season, especially in the weird and wonderful world of the Championship, remains to be seen. There are surprises everywhere you look. Luton might have made some fancy new friends in the Premier League last term but they’ve come back from holiday to find the fridge is on fire, slipping into the relegation places. Are Watford back under Tom Cleverley or will he be hurled through the well-worn door marked Do One at Vicarage Road in six weeks’ time? Who can say. How good are Cardiff? They failed to win in their first eight games and gave Erol Bulut, well, the bullet. Now, the Bluebirds are unbeaten in their last five; caretaker manager Omer Riza clearly has some managerial rizz.
The only clubs making any sort of sense are Burnley, who are thriving under cardigan-wearing Mike Skinner wannabe Scott Parker; and Sheffield United, who are winning games of football thanks to a miserly defence and absolutely no officials eating sandwiches in front of Chris “Chrissy” Wilder (he’s known as Chrissy in the Champ). Norwich haven’t lost at home for more than a year, and are still only eighth. Then there’s Leeds. Ah, Leeds. Whether they’ve won by four, drawn 3-3 after a last minute leveller or lost to someone rubbish at an apoplectic Elland Road, you can always safely assume they’ll be close to the automatic spots – maybe third? *checks table*Perfect.

At 12pm precisely, just as your fifth-favourite teatimely football email was handing in its copy, putting on its coat and about to head for the nearest tavern, the following missive dropped on the news wires. “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Rúben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team.” You had all week! “He has signed a contract until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November once he has fulfilled his obligations with Sporting CP,” a club statement tooted. Said duties include a Bigger Cup tie against Manchester City, and a farewell fixture against Braga before work at United begins … with an international break. And then a trip to Ipswich on 24 November. Truly, the Premier League’s glamour is unmatched.

CEDARBURG — The Cedarburg boys soccer team dominated regional play, outscoring opponents by a 15-0 margin to claim the championship.
After thrashing West Bend East by an 11-0 score Tuesday in a semifinal match, the Bulldogs netted three goals in the opening half Saturday on the way to a 4-0 victory over Green Bay East.
Senior Mitchell Czajkowski did much of the heavy lifting in the regional final, scoring three goals and handing out an assist. He found the net twice before halftime and assisted a goal by Ryan O’Neill, then finished off his hat trick in the second half.
Cedarburg, which went undefeated in North Shore Conference play, improved to 15-1-2 overall on the season. The Bulldogs open sectional competition Thursday, hosting West Bend West at 7 p.m. Cedarburg defeated the Spartans by a 4-1 tally when the clubs met Oct. 1 in a NSC match.
Homestead kickers capture regional title
MEQUON — The Homestead boys soccer team did not allow a goal last week on the way to winning a WIAA Div. 2 regional championship.
After claiming a 9-0 victory over Ashwaubenon in a semifinal match Tuesday, the Highlanders tallied once in each half Saturday to claim a 2-0 win over Kaukauna.
Tommy Corbett and Lukas Boegel netted the goals, while Jacob Armstrong and Sam Frets handed out assists in the regional title tilt.
Homestead improved to 12-4-4 overall on the season and will host Green Bay Notre Dame in a sectional semifinal match Thursday at 7 p.m.
Shorewood has an answer for every challenge presented by Grafton
SHOREWOOD — The Grafton boys soccer team netted the go-ahead goal twice in the opening half Thursday at Shorewood, but the Greyhounds produced the equalizer two different times before the break, then tallied the only goal of the second half in a WIAA Div. 3 regional semifinal match.
“That was by far our best team performance of the year,” Grafton junior Jacob Collins said. “We really put our heart and soul in the game because we did not want the season to end. Sadly we came up short and couldn’t finish the game out.”
Grafton took the lead in the early going when Luke Jackson scored a goal assisted by Ethan Weinhold. After Shorewood evened the score, Charlie Lawrence gave the Black Hawks the lead back, with Weinhold again supplying the assist.
The Greyhounds tied the game with a goal shortly before halftime, then produced the lone goal of the second half to earn the win.
Grafton’s season came to an end with an overall record of 6-11-1.
USM boys soccer team blanked in playoff loss
RIVER HILLS — The University School of Milwaukee boys soccer team was unable to produce a goal Thursday, dropping a 2-0 decision to Racine Lutheran in a WIAA Div. 4 regional semifinal match.
Harry Pollack scored a goal and had an assist for the visitors, while Max Contreras added the other goal for Racine Lutheran. Tommaso Pantalei made five saves for the Wildcats in the loss.
USM finished the season with an overall record of 9-7-3.
Cedarburg makes short work of Dominican regional final
CEDARBURG — The Cedarburg boys volleyball team dominated a WIAA regional match Friday, earning a 25-17, 25-8, 25-14 victory.
Collin Ehlers led the attack for the Bulldogs with eight kills, Jordan Puro and Ian Wilson each added seven and Logan Hargarten chipped in six. Jaden Eickberg paced the club with five aces, while Quinn Donaldson added three.
Cedarburg, 30-10 overall, returns to action today, visiting North Shore Conference champion Homestead for a match at 7 p.m.

Homestead sweeps its way to sectional play
MEQUON — The Homestead boys volleyball team punched its ticket to the sectional round with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-21 victory Friday over Sheboygan North in a WIAA boys volleyball regional championship match.
Sean Contardi led the Highlanders with nine kills Friday, while Justin Bliesner and Alex Konon each added six kills. Konon also had four aces for Homestead.
Up next is a sectional semifinal match today at 7 p.m. against Cedarburg. The North Shore Conference champion Highlanders, 31-6 overall on the season, swept the Bulldogs in a pair or regular season matches.
Grafton girls volleyball team wins regional championship
GRAFTON — The Grafton girls volleyball team earned some close victories in sets in regional competition, leading to the Black Hawks taking a WIAA Div. 2 regional championship.
“I think as a team, we came together after a really close first set,” Grafton senior Izzy Pitre said in regard to the Black Hawks earning a 25-23 victory Thursday in the opening set of an eventual 3-0 sweep against Port Washington. “And in the second set, we found our team chemistry and blew them out of the water. From that point on we soared and got the win.”
After a tight opening game, Grafton took the final two games by margins of 25-11 and 25-14 to win the regional semifinal match.
Pitre then contributed six digs Saturday as the Black Hawks defeated Kettle Moraine Lutheran by a 3-1 score to win the regional title.
After splitting the first two sets against the Chargers — Grafton took game one by a 25-18 score and dropped the second set, 25-16 — the home team rebounded to take the third set by a 25-23 margin. That paved the way for the Black Hawks to finish off the match with a 25-22 win in game four.
Paige Proefrock had 29 kills in the regional tournament and added five aces and 12 digs in Saturday’s match against KML. Kaitlin Muecke dished out 18 assists and had 10 digs to go along with three aces against the Chargers, while Mary Weishan finished with 33 assists in regional play.
Grafton improved to 28-10 overall on the season. The Black Hawks travel to Kewaskum for a semifinal Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner of that match will play Saturday for a trip to the state tournament.
Homestead completes season sweep of Hartford on the gridiron
MEQUON — The Homestead football team had an opening round rematch with North Shore Conference rival Hartford on Friday and completed the season sweep with a 28-8 victory in a WIAA Div. 2 Level 1 contest.
After earning a 35-0 victory Sept. 27 the first time around, the Highlanders jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the fourth quarter to advance in the postseason.
Bentley Hickman punished the Orioles defense to the tune of 132 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Tommy O’Hagan added 105 yards through the air, including a pair of scoring passes.
O’Hagan got the scoring going in the second quarter with a 51-yard touchdown to Sean O’Byrne. Homestead led 7-0 at halftime, then doubled its lead when Blake Wichman scored from six yards out in the third quarter.
Homestead then moved ahead by four scores with two touchdowns in the final quarter, with O’Hagan connecting with Jonah Wenzler for a 12-yard TD, then Hickman wrapped up the scoring for the Highlanders with an 8-yard run.
Homestead improved to 8-2 for the season overall and will host Germantown in Level 2 action. The Warhawks (8-2 overall) earned a 25-14 victory when the teams met Aug. 23 to open the season. Kickoff for the second-round contest is set for Friday at 7 p.m.
Grafton faces little resistance from Milwaukee North co-op in football playoff opener
GRAFTON — Grafton took its first step toward a return to Camp Randall Stadium Friday, by jumping out to an early 42-0 lead on the way to a 48-0 victory over the Milwaukee North/Lifelong Learning co-op at Kellner Field.
The Black Hawks scored on offense, defense and special teams to take control of things right from the start to reach the second round of the WIAA Div. 3 tournament.
Brady Hilgart completed all three of his passes in the game, including a 44-yard touchdown toss to Gavin Lempke.
Grafton (9-1 overall) returns to action Friday, hosting Plymouth (8-2) in a Level 2 contest. Kickoff at The Nest is set for 7 p.m.
