Retired referee Ssegonga gives 10 acres for Cheptegei Olympic Village

In one of his many timeless and thought provoking hits, Basima Ogenze, singer Jose Chameleone wondered why it is easier to appreciate people’s efforts when they are long gone.

If it was a Luganda themed dinner to see off International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach, at Sheraton Hotel Kampala on Wednesday, retired football referee Mohammed Ssegonga could have done with bellowing into the tune. Maybe the Police band or Ndere Troupes led by Stephen Rwangyezi could have backed him up to add to their already ballistic performances on the night.

Ssegonga still captured the room with his surprise and generous offer of “10 acres of land in Nakasongola” to legendary athlete Joshua Cheptegei to establish “for his legacy, a Cheptegei Olympic Village”.

“This offer is effective starting tomorrow (Thursday) and we should do the transfer next week,” Ssegonga, who retired at 41, told the Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang as he handed over “the original title.”

It is never easy to read the room but Ssegonga’s presence at the dinner pointed at something. First, he has largely kept a low profile since keeping away his whistle in 2011 but also, Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) general secretary Beatrice Ayikoru, who alongside National Council of Sports general secretary Bernard Patrick Ogwel had been in the know, signaled to one of the hosts of the night Mark Ssali, at the start of the function, that he introduces Ssegonga alongside Olympians Winnie Nanyondo and Halimah Nakaayi.

“As a former elite referee, I know the sacrifice that comes with being successful in sports; the hard work, dedication, disappointment like was the case (during the 2017 World Athletics Cross Country Championships) in Kololo, bouncing back. This kind of work needs to be recognized,” Ssegonga said.

It was largely a serene and emotional night for a visitor who most wanted to hang around longer. The invites to return punctuated most speeches.

UOC president Donald Rukare used the opportunity to push government to include the body in next year’s budget “as a testament to the continued good working relationship between NCS and UOC” but also thanked it for recognizing them in the new Sports Act.

Ogwang said he has mainly “struggled with balancing the pressure from UOC” in his tenure and asked them and the international body IOC to be alive to the bureaucracy of government.

Former Minister of State for Sports, and now ruling party National Resistance Movement Chief Whip in Parliament, Hamson Obua, said Bach’s “visit gives us hope and faith in the future but also expands on our bragging rights as a nation.”

He promised Uganda “will remain a strong nation that will come to the Olympics to win medals and break records.”

In his departing remarks, Bach promised to return.

“We will keep fond memories of our visit here. I believe that you do not leave a country without an idea of coming back. I was offered a chance, next time, to see the elephants and I will take the opportunity because I am not sure, with the Olympic Movement, that I will be welcome after my term,” Bach, who will not seek re-election when this term expires mid next year, said in a lighthearted conclusion.

It was a horrifying scene’: Cheptegei siblings reveal details of attack on athlete

Younger sibling of Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who died on Thursday due to multiple organ failure after being doused with petrol and set aflame at her house in Kinyoro, Trans Nzoia County, has given harrowing details of how the late marathoner’s ex-boyfriend blurred her vision by first pouring petrol on her face, then threatened to slash with a machete anyone who dared to intervene.

Cheptegei, 33, died on Thursday at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where she was undergoing treatment after being allegedly doused with petrol at her house in Trans Nzoia on August 1 by her ex-boyfriend Dickson Ndiema Marangach.

She died of multi-organ failure after suffering 80 percent burns. Ndiema is also admitted at the same hospital after he suffered 30 percent burns when the incident happened.

Cheptegei’s younger sister, Dorcas Cherop, who is a Form Two Student at Nakame Secondary School in Trans Nzoia, has said that Ndiema poured petrol on her elder sister’s face, and the athlete cried out for help but when she came to her aid, her sister’s attacker threatened to slash her with a machete.

“It was a horrifying scene that I don’t want to remember. My sister was burning after she was doused with petrol, and no one came to her aid. When I dashed out with a blanket so as to cover up my sister and to extinguish the fire which was consuming her, Dickson kicked me, and I fell down. He threatened to slash me with a panga he was carrying,” 16-year-old Cherop, who stayed with Cheptegei, told Nation Sport yesterday in Kinyoro.

Cherop said she raised the alarm  but her sister’s neighbours did not immediately respond but watched from a distance.

“When my sister was doused with petrol, she couldn’t see because the man first poured petrol on her face, blurring her vision.  I didn’t know it until I saw her attempting to open the gate so as to escape. Her daughter was behind her, trying to put off fire that was burning her hair as we shouted for help,” a tearful Cherop said.

Cherop said neighbours helped to put out fire which had also started burning Ndiema’s  clothes,  afterwhich he poured more petrol on Cheptegei.

She said two good Samaritans rushed Cheptegei to Kitale County Referral Hospital, about 15km away from Kinyoro.

“It was a torturous journey for her. The whole of her body was aching, and we stopped many times on the way because she was not comfortable at all. She complained of pain in her stomach until we reached the hospital where she was taken in for treatment,” she said.

Everlyne Chelangat, another sister to Cheptegei, faulted local police, and Directorate of Criminal Investigations for failing to act swiftly to save her sister’s life because they  were aware of what the athlete had been going through.

Chelangat also revealed that Cheptegei had complained to her that her ex-boyfriend at one time hid her travel documents at a time she was due to compete in a race abroad.

“Rebecca had asked the man to stay away from her and the kids after trouble started early this year. They used to stay together in Endebess, but my sister decided to go back home to Kinyoro, where she also trained,” she said.

Chelangat said that at one point, Ndiema ordered her to surrender her M-Pesa details and bank documents, something Cheptegei declined to do.  She said Ndiema left  her sister in protest and got married to another athlete.

“Ndiema went on to marry another woman and brought her to Rebecca’s house when she was away.  He claimed that it was his home. My father reported the matter to the police because he saw it as a threat to  the children’s safety.  Ndiema was arrested the next day, but was released after two days,” she added.

“He also claimed that the piece of land on which Rebecca’s house stood belonged to him, and he wanted her to vacate the place. This time, Rebecca and my father reported the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation officers based in Kitale.”

Cheptegei competed for Uganda in women’s marathon on August 11 at the 2024  Olympic Games in Paris, and finished 44th in two hours and 32.14 minutes.

She also competed in the marathon at the 2023 World Athletics Championship in Budapest, finishing 14th in 2:29.34.

She held Ugandan national record in women’s marathon of  2:22:47. The soft-spoken marathoner, who was an officer in Uganda People’s Defence Force, was due to represent her country at the 2025 World Military Games in Switzerland from March 23-30 next year.

On Sunday, Sabaot elders from Trans Nzoia County said Cheptegei’s  death was a big blow to the community both in Kenya and Uganda, and urged the Kenyan government to ensure the family gets justice.

The elders asked Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki to ensure safety of athletes is guaranteed, adding that  cases of death of athletes was worrying.

The athlete’s family has said that her remains will be interred on Saturday at the family home in Kapkoros, Bukwo District in eastern Uganda.

Because Cheptegei was an officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, the Ugandan government will take full charge of the funeral programme.

Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei dies after being set on fire by boyfriend

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has died at a Kenyan hospital where she was being treated after 80% of her body was burned in an attack by her partner. She was 33.

The country’s sports minister said authorities must do more to combat gender-based violence.

A spokesperson at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city, Owen Menach, confirmed Cheptegei’s death on Thursday. Menach said the long-distance runner died early in the morning after her organs failed. She had been fully sedated on admission at the hospital.

Cheptegei competed in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics less than a month before the attack. She finished in 44th place.

Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, told journalists at the hospital that he had lost a daughter who was “very supportive” and hopes to get justice.

“As it is now, the criminal who harmed my daughter is a murderer and I am yet to see what the security officials are doing,” the father said. “He is still free and might even flee.”

Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said Monday that Cheptegei’s partner, Dickson Ndiema, bought a can of gasoline, poured it on her and set her ablaze during a disagreement Sunday. Ndiema was also burned and was being treated at the same hospital.

Menach said Ndiema was still in the intensive care unit with burns over 30% of his body but was “improving and stable.”

Cheptegei’s parents said their daughter bought land in Trans Nzoia to be near the county’s many athletic training centers. A report filed by the local chief said the two were heard fighting over the land where her house was built before the attack.

The Uganda Athletics Federation eulogized Cheptegei on the social platform X, writing, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.”

Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare called the attack “a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete.”

Kenya’s Sports Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said the government would ensure justice for the victim.

“This tragedy is a stark reminder that we must do more to combat gender-based violence in our society, which in recent years has reared its ugly head in elite sporting circles,” he wrote in a statement.

In 2023, Ugandan Olympic runner and steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat was found dead with stab wounds. In 2022, Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete Damaris Muthee was found dead and a postmortem report stated that she was strangled. In 2021, long distance runner Agnes Tirop was stabbed to death at her home. Her husband, Ibrahim Rotich, was arrested and charged with murder, the case is ongoing.
