Chiefs heiress Ava Hunt celebrates SMU’s historic addition to CFP

Ava Hunt’s freshman year at SMU is shaping up to be a memorable one.

Moments after the 11-2 Mustangs were announced as the final addition to the expanded College Football Playoff bracket as the No. 11 seed, the daughter of Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt celebrated the historic inclusion on social media.

Hunt, a member of SMU’s Spirit Team, re-shared a post from the ACC’s page congratulating the Mustangs, now set to make their first CFP appearance in program history when they face No. 6 seed Penn State (11-2) in the first round of the 12-team playoff field — a seismic shakeup from the previous four-team bracket.

The announcement comes one day after SMU fell to Clemson in Saturday’s ACC title game following a walk-off, 56-yard field goal at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Hunt’s family, including older sister Gracie Hunt, were in attendance.

“Not the result we were hoping for, but so proud of our Ponies!” Gracie exclaimed on Instagram.

“It’s official!! So beyond thankful for the opportunity to keep doing what I love!” she gushed on social media at the time, adding the hashtags “SMU Cheer” and “Pony Up.”

Hunt committed to the Mustangs one month after her beloved Chiefs won their second consecutive Super Bowl.

The Chiefs topped the 49ers in the championship contest in February, defending their title after the team’s 2023 victory over the Eagles.

“BACK TO BACK CHAMPS!!” Hunt shared from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, where the Chiefs knocked off the 49ers in overtime, 25-22.

“God is so good! This one was for NKH.”

The Hunt family lost Norma Hunt, the wife of the Chiefs’ late founder Lamar Hunt, in June 2023. She was 85 years old.

The Chiefs’ quest for a Super Bowl three-peat is well within reach as the team clinched a playoff berth in late November following a win over the Raiders.

The Chiefs (11-1) will host the Chargers (8-4) on this week’s edition of “Sunday Night Football.”

The Mustangs will visit the Nittany Lions on Dec. 21.

  • A Chiefs Love Story’ Is About Passionate Football Fans Finding Connection

A Chiefs Love Story’ Is About Passionate Football Fans Finding Connection

Julie Sherman Wolfe wants to be clear, as she says, “I’ll start with the Taylor and Travis thing. As far as informing the movie goes, that was sort of a jumping off point.”

She’s talking about the new Hallmark movie “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story.”

And, of course, she’s referring to supercouple, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce and superstar singer Taylor Swift and their well-documented romance.

But, the movie isn’t about a performer and a player, it’s about Chiefs superfan Alana who’s trying to win the Fan of the Year Award as a Christmas gift for her family, while falling in love with someone in the Chiefs front office along the way.

The movie stars Hunter King as Alana, Tyler Hynes, Ed Begley Jr., and Diedrich Bader, and features Travis Kelce’s mom, Donna, as well. Sherman Wolfe wrote the film.

King says, “I mean, I’m a Swiftie. I don’t know who isn’t a Swiftie. So we’ll take all the Swifties we can get, right?”

But, as it turns out, King is also a huge fan of the sport as well. “I grew up loving football. I was a really big Peyton Manning fan and I would YouTube his videos on how to throw a football. And then I was like, ‘I’m going to be a quarterback when I grow up,’ and my dad’s like, ‘I got news for you…’ So, I don’t get to be a quarterback, but I get to be a part of a football movie.”

Hynes interjects that, “And she’s got an arm on her.”

Lara Krug, VP and Chief Marketing Officer with Kansas City Chiefs agrees with Hynes, saying, “[She] she sent us a video of herself throwing a football” and it was incorporated into the movie.

The film is the result of a partnership between Hallmark and the Chiefs as explained by Samantha DiPippo, SVP Programming at Hallmark Media.

“The second we really sat down and started talking about what this could be, I think we instantly knew that there was a massive opportunity to make something truly magical here. And for us, it’s amazing to shoot in Kansas City. This is obviously the home of both of our iconic brands, but it’s also the biggest movie we’ve ever done,” she says.

Krug says that while the narrative definitely has football all over it, “It’s really about celebrating the fans and their passion.”

DiPippo wants to point out that, “You don’t have to be a Chiefs fan to love this movie.”

In a twist of fate, Sherman Wolfe was not exactly a Chiefs supporter when she took on this project. She was in fact mourning her favorite team’s recent Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs, explaining that she’s a die hard 49ers fan.

“I was still wearing black, and [DiPippo] said, ‘Okay, are you sitting down,’ and she told me all about the movie. And honestly, I feel so strongly about the passion that fans have for the game of football, and I think it transcends a particular team. So, I was able to separate my own personal angst from that and write a movie that, if you didn’t know I was a 49er fan, you would think that I was a Chiefs fan.”

Krug adds, “I think regardless of being a Chiefs fan or not, [this movie is about] so much more than what is currently happening in the cultural zeitgeist. For us, we’re fans of our fans, so if we can tell a story where you get to combine [that] with Hallmark, it’s perfect.”

King agrees, as she adds, “I don’t know who wouldn’t want to watch this movie. It’s centered around love and passion and football and Christmas and family.”

Circling back to talk about a certain star and whether her fans should tune in, King believes that, “For a lot of Swifties, [all of this is] kind of her brand, so come on board, watch it. It’s going to be great.”

Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story premieres Nov. 30 on Hallmark Channel at 8/7c as part of the network’s 15th annual Countdown to Christmas.

  • Monday Night Football Week 9: Chiefs vs. Buccaneers – how to watch, game time, TV channel, streaming

Monday Night Football Week 9: Chiefs vs. Buccaneers – how to watch, game time, TV channel, streaming

The Kansas City Chiefs will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to cap Week 9 of the 2024 NFL season.

The Buccaneers (4-4) have found themselves an answer at quarterback in former first overall pick Baker Mayfield. Mayfield came into Week 9 leading the NFL in touchdowns with 23 through the first 8 weeks of the season. However, things went gone very wrong for Tampa Bay back in Week 7 when both Chris Godwin and Mike Evans suffered significant injuries. Godwin suffered a dislocated ankle and was placed on Injured Reserve after getting surgery to repair the ankle. Evans, meanwhile suffered a hamstring injury and isn’t expected back until Week 12.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, are the NFL’s lone undefeated team at 7-0 and appear on track to compete for the Super Bowl once again. But it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the back-to-back champs, not at all. Kansas City has been scrambling to fill out their skill positions on a weekly basis as both the wide receiver and running back positions have been hit hard by injury. Having Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid can cover up a lot of warts, but they are far from the offensive powerhouse we would expect them to be.

And yet, the Chiefs are 9.5-point favorites at home per FanDuel Sportsbook. Can they take care of business and advance to 8-0 on the season?

    Chris’ Picks

I have to go with the Chiefs here. Kansas City is not a dominant team, but the duo of Pat Mahomes and Andy Reid simply find ways to win — helped out by Steve Spagnuolo doing his thing on defense.

Baker Mayfield is playing excellent football and is on the fringe of being a Top 10 quarterback. However, the Buccaneers as a whole simply have too much working against them right now. Their offense is down Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and is also trying to overcome a defense that’s aged out of its prime.

The presence of Mahomes and Reid shrink any opponent’s margin of error to nearly nil, and any opening gives them a chance to win. I think this game winds up being closer than the 9.5-point spread, but the Chiefs stay undefeated.

Incoming Man United boss Ruben Amorim ‘could raid Sporting Lisbon for THREE stars next summer in £175m swoop’ – ‘with chiefs at Portuguese club expecting him to try and poach players’

Ruben Amorim could try to bring three players with him from Sporting Lisbon after touching down as Manchester United manager.

The Portuguese begins work at Old Trafford on November 11 after United reached an agreement to pinch the two-time Portuguese league champion.

And despite predecessor Erik ten Hag facing much criticism for signing his old Ajax pals, Amorim could look to do the same next summer.

He has ruled out making any bids for Sporting stars in January but could try and load his trolley with three aces next summer.

The Sun reports that United could splash £175million on a striker, centre-back, and central midfielder and that Sporting chiefs expect the raid.

Midfielder and staunch Arsenal fan Morten Hjulmand completes the trio Amorim could pinch

It is no surprise to hear the name of Viktor Gyokeres among the trio. The former Coventry forward hit 43 goals last season and already has 18 this term.

Gyokeres, 26, has a release clause of £84m and has refused to rule out a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal also named among his suitors.

‘Going with Amorim to Man Utd? I don’t know… I’m here,’ he said.

‘As you can see, I enjoy it at Sporting. It’s nothing I think about. I’m just sad about him (Amorim) leaving. We wish him all the best.’

Alongside Gyokeres, United could approach centre-back Goncalo Inacio, 23, and midfielder Morten Hjulmand, 25.

United were already targeting Inacio over the summer, according to Portuguese outlets Record and O Jogo. Arsenal were also reported to be keen on him in December 2023 and he has a reported release clause of £51m.

Inacio has won two Portuguese league titles, two League Cups, and a Super Cup since stepping up to Sporting’s first team in the 2020-21 season. He has also amassed 12 caps for Portugal and featured twice at Euro 2024.

While he is principally a central option, Amorim has also deployed him at left-back.

Meanwhile, Hjulmand has been touted as a ‘replacement for Casemiro’ although he has a long way to living up to the Brazilian’s pedigree.

He has won one title with Sporting after spending the last couple of seasons with the Portuguese giants. The Dane started his career with Admira Wacker in Austria before joining Lecce in Italy.

The Sun claims that he would cost around £40m.

Hjulmand scored a stunner at Euro 2024 against England.

However, there is one detail United should be cautious of. The midfielder is a lifelong Arsenal fan and even has a tattoo of the club’s crest on his upper left arm.

If Sporting are fearful of Amorim’s departure derailing their season, they may take a crumb of comfort in his assurances that he does not want to poach stars in January.

‘I’m not going to get any players from Sporting in January,’ he said.

‘Gyokeres costs 100 million (euros) and it’s very difficult.’

Wrexham set to secure pathway to European football as FA chiefs consider radical Prosiect Cymru plan

    • Welsh clubs playing in England may soon have an alternative pathway to Europe
    • Plans would see likes of Wrexham, Cardiff and Swansea in the Welsh League Cup
    • LISTEN NOW: It’s All Kicking Off! , available wherever you get your podcasts. New episodes every Monday and Thursday

Wrexham will soon be crossing swords with some of Europe’s most famous names if football bosses approve a radical plan later this year.

The League One club have become a global sensation thanks to the investment from Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and Welsh FA chiefs have developed a proposal that would see Wrexham, Swansea, Cardiff and Newport competing in the Welsh League Cup – giving them a far easier route to European competition.

Key FAW (Welsh FA) figures also believe the move would drive investment across Welsh football.

As the clubs are part of the English pyramid, they can qualify for Europe only through the Premier League, FA Cup or EFL Cup. If they entered the Welsh League Cup, they would no longer be able to reach Europe through the ‘English’ route.

Yet Mail Sport understands there is significant interest in the idea in the initiative, named ‘Prosiect Cymru’ (Project Wales).

Prosiect Cymru would see Welsh clubs playing in the English pyramid compete in the Welsh League Cup for a place in the Europa Conference League

UEFA, the Football Association, Premier League and clubs in the Cymru Premier, Wales’ domestic top flight, have seen the proposal and it is due to go before the FA’s Professional Game Board before the end of 2024.

The winner of the Welsh League Cup enters the Europa Conference League, which this season features Chelsea, Panathinaikos and Fiorentina.

Roma won the first edition in 2022, followed by West Ham in 2023 and Olympiacos last year.

Welsh clubs in the EFL have not participated in an FAW competition since the FAW Premier Cup – which did not offer European qualification – was abolished in 2008, but they have a rich history in continental contests.

Cardiff beat Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971, Wrexham defeated Porto in the same competition in 1984 and Newport reached a Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final in 1981, while Swansea won 3-0 in Valencia in a 2013 Europa League match.

  • Saints at Chiefs on Monday Night Football

The Kansas City Chiefs’ pursuit of a three-peat took a major hit when leading receiver Rashee Rice suffered a knee injury, following a collision with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The injury bug hasn’t been kind to the Chiefs: Rice is out for the year. So is receiver Hollywood Brown (shoulder). Starting running back Isiah Pacheco is sidelined for two months after breaking his leg in Week 2.

To make matters worse, star tight end Travis Kelce has been blanketed by defenses and off to one of the worst starts of his career.

But the show must go on for Mahomes, coach Andy Reid and the three-time Super Bowl champions looking for their fourth title in Chiefs history.
