    Three homegrown Indian chocolate brands have won big at the prestigious Academy Of Chocolate Awards UK 2024. The results, which came out earlier this week, announced 17 accolades in total for Indian chocolate products. The brands that won were Paul and Mike, Bon Fiction and Manam Chocolate. Paul and Mike is based in Kerala, Bon Fiction in Andhra Pradesh and Manam Chocolate in Hyderabad. The three brands work to champion Indian cacao in various ways and have won several awards on the global stage in the past too. Find out which specific creations won recognition below:

    Which Indian Chocolates Were Awarded This Year?

    At the Academy Of Chocolate Awards UK 2024, Paul and Mike won silver for its ‘Brunost Cheese Fine Milk Chocolate’ and bronze for ‘Rum & Rummy Raisins Mild Dark Chocolate.’ Bon Fiction won four accolades: a gold for ‘A Rose in Pistachio Skies,’ silver for its ‘7 Assorted Bars Gift Pack,’ and bronze for its ‘82% Dark Drinking Chocolate’ and ‘The Mango Menace.’

    Manam Chocolate won three silver awards for its ‘Chocolate Lab Tablet No. 2 – Pedda Rasalu Mango’, ‘Chocolate Lab Tablet No. 3 – Chakkarakeli Banana’, and ‘Indian Origin Tablet No. 6 – 66% Dark.’ It won bronze awards for eight of its chocolates, namely ‘Indian Origin Tablet No. 5 – 80% Dark’, ‘Indian Origin Tablet No. 7 – 69% Dark’, ‘Indian Origin Tablet No. 8 – 100% Dark’, ‘International Origin Tablet No. 14 – 80% Dark’, ‘Hazelnut & Cardamom Praline’, ‘Toasted Hazelnut & Cardamom Bonbon’, and ‘45% Milk Chocolate x Yuzu-Scented Caramel Ganache.’

    Manam Chocolate took to Instagram to announce the news and stated, “It’s important to reiterate that these awards don’t celebrate the triumph of a single person, but rather, they belong to everyone at Manam-the farmers, the fermenters, the chocolate-makers and the chocolatiers. It’s their ability to grow, harvest, ferment, refine and express cacao into delicious Indian Craft Chocolate, that makes this recognition possible. And together, we continue to carve a new identity for Indian chocolate on the global stage, showcasing the excellence of Indian craftsmanship.”

    Earlier this year, Manam Chocolate Karkhana [a factory and experience centre] received global recognition in a different way. It was one of two Indian establishments to be named among TIME magazine’s ‘World’s Greatest Places’ for 2024 (more details here). Some time ago, Paul and Mike also made headlines when it became the first Indian brand to win a Gold at the prestigious International Chocolate Awards.     This Indian Chocolate Won Gold At The Prestigious International Chocolate Awards 2024

    Kerala-based chocolate brand Paul And Mike recently made India proud on the world stage. It made history by becoming the first Indian brand to win a Gold at the International Chocolate Awards. In the category of ‘Milk chocolate enrobed whole fruit,’ Paul and Mike’s Milk Chocolate Coated Salted Capers came first. The brand also won a bronze in the category of ‘Milk chocolate bars with inclusions or pieces’ for its Pistachios & Idukki Cardamom Chocolate. The gold-winning chocolate represents an interesting convergence of the eastern and western regions of India. As the company notes, it is made using “capers and salt coming from the barren lands of Tuticorin on the East coast and Cacao coming from the lush Western Ghats.” The brand has tied up with Ishka Farms to develop this product over three years.

    How Was The Award-Winning Chocolate Crafted?

    The chocolate makers sourced freshly harvested organic capers of the smallest size (Lilliput capers). The company says that the capers “taste like olives but more lemony with notes of mustard and pepper.” These are sent to a factory to be placed in a salt solution. The salt used for the same is also special. It is sourced from the salt pans of Tuticorin. Paul and Mike’s collaborator, Ishka farms, uses a custom recipe for salted capers to nail the balance of tangy and salty notes. The salted capers are then coated with in-house milk chocolate. “As you bite into the crunchy caper and the chocolate melts on your tongue, you get a burst of flavours ranging from umami to salty to acidic to chocolatey and a long finish and aftertaste,” the company explains.

    How many different ways of making hot chocolate do you know about? In a recent Instagram reel, digital creator @letskwoowk shows “3 levels” of the same. His video has gone viral and got many people talking about this beloved drink. For “Level 1,” he heats milk and adds sugar and sifted cocoa powder to the same vessel. He whisks the ingredients together, sprinkles some salt on top and pours the drink into a mug. “Simple, basic, super nostalgic. Absolutely nothing wrong with it,” he says.

    For “Level 2,” he takes a bar of dark chocolate and chops it well to shred it into smaller pieces. He adds them to a vessel and also adds sugar, salt and cream to it. He gently whisks to melt the chocolate over the heat and gets a creamy sauce-like consistency. Next, he adds the milk slowly to the chocolate mix, whisking continuously. The result is a beverage that is thicker and has a darker brown shade than the first one. He tops it with a dollop of cream.

    For “Level 3”, he adds chocolate pieces, brown sugar, a cinnamon stick, green cardamoms and oat milk in a saucepan. He heats these ingredients on low flame for around 10 minutes to steep the flavours. Later, he whisks them together and adjusts the consistency by adding more milk as needed. A viral video currently circulating online has a fresh twist on the classic rasgulla — it shows the making of “chocolate rasgulla.” A traditional milk-based sweet, rasgulla is cherished during festive occasions across India. While we’ve seen variations like rasmalai and baked rasgulla, this latest twist brings a fresh take to the traditional treat.

    In the video titled “Chocolate Rasgulla in the making,” the creator begins by showing a couple of containers of Cadbury hot chocolate. Next, the confectioner is seen pouring milk from several packets into a container. This milk is then transferred to a large churning machine, where it is boiled. After boiling, the milk is filtered through a white muslin cloth and poured into a separate container. The curdling powder is then added to the milk, which is left to settle. Once the milk is drained from the chenna (curdled milk), it is kneaded until smooth.

    Before the final kneading, chocolate powder is added to the mixture, which is then rolled into small balls. These chocolate and white balls are cooked in sugar syrup until they become spongy. Once cooked, they are transferred to a separate bowl of sugar syrup that is kept off the heat. And just like that, the chocolate rasgulla is ready to be enjoyed.

    The video’s caption mentions that each chocolate rasgulla costs Rs 20. The content creator also tagged the shop’s location, stating that it’s available at Nathu Sweets in Dubai Mall, Ghaziabad.

    Idli, a traditional South Indian dish, is one of the most delicious yet healthy breakfast options. Made with rice, this dish is packed with several nutrients. It is typically served with sambar and chutney. Variations like rava idli, oats idli, and vegetable idli are also loved by foodies. However, in this era of fusion foods and trends, even the humble idli has not been spared. A content creator recently shared a video on Instagram showcasing the “weirdest idli” they found. The video begins with a close-up of a plate of idlis filled with chocolate.
    Not only that, but they are also topped with different kinds of jams, such as strawberry, mango, and litchi. The content creator is also heard saying, “Bangalore mein maine isse burra kuch nahi khaya hai. Inn idlis ke andar toh chocolate ki filling hoti hai aur oopar lagaye jaate hain different flavours -strawberry, mango, and litchi [I haven’t eaten anything worse than this in Bangalore. Inside these idlis, there is chocolate filling, and on top, there are different flavours like strawberry, mango, and litchi].”

    The content creator added, “Aur inn idliyon ke saath chutney ke jagah di jaati hai ice cream. Oopar se sprinkles ki jaati hai coloured powder aur chocolate syrup. Ek plate ka price hota hai 100 rupees. Yeh kitna ganda mazaak hai idli ke saath? [And instead of chutney, ice cream is served with these idlis. It is topped with coloured powder sprinkles and chocolate syrup. The price for one plate is 100 rupees. How ridiculous is this combination with idli?].”

    The video featuring the fusion idli dish has already clocked 2.3 million views. One user wrote, “Brother, they probably forgot to put poison.” Another user stated, “Tum logon ne dosa ka haal to kharab kar diya, ab idli ki baari hai kya? [You guys have spoiled dosa, now is it idli’s turn?].” A user hilariously mentioned, “Justice for Idli.” “Idli is crying in the corner. Its combination is with coconut chutney or sambar. These days in Bangalore, everything is an experiment,” read another comment. “Idli ki yeh beizzati main bardaash nahi karunga [I will not tolerate this insult to Idli],” read yet another hilarious comment.

    Hong Kong artist makes chocolate rain on New Jersey

    Prudence Mak says she hopes to inspire a connection between the Greater New York area and Hong Kong.

    The celebrated designer, who created the cartoon doll character Fatina Dreams for her creative crafts brand Chocolate Rain, told China Daily on Oct 12 that as a young woman from Hong Kong, she grew up in “a melting pot of cultures, where the East meets the West — it’s an integral part of who we are”.

    Fatina took center stage over the weekend at the Hong Kong Meets America — Pop Art Exhibition by Chocolate Rain at the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan.

    This immersive event from Oct 11 to 12 — presented by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York — offered visitors a unique opportunity to experience Hong Kong through interactive do-it-yourself workshops and artistic displays.

    Founded in 2000 by Mak, Chocolate Rain is popular for its designs inspired by childhood dreams and whimsical adventures.

    The brand also has previously been featured at New York City venues, such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R.Guggenheim Museum, gaining international acclaim for its distinctive artistic style.

    This time, Mak’s art brought Hong Kong’s vibrant street food culture and landmarks to life alongside similar scenes from New York. She noted the similarities between the two cities — both vibrant and fast-paced, with towering skyscrapers.

    Mak features iconic landmarks in her 3D artworks, such as the Statue of Liberty and yellow cabs of New York, alongside Hong Kong’s Big Buddha and the Star Ferry that crosses Victoria Harbor.

    She says that while she brought Fatina this time, she also has a deep appreciation for traditional Chinese art.

    “I personally practice art with the bamboo brush. I remember my grandpa …would come home and practice calligraphy with me. That’s how I was introduced to ink and brush for the first time. Art is for every lifestyle,” she says.

    Mak says she hopes to create a platform, especially for children, where people can engage with art through their own creativity. She says that both Hong Kong and New York are rich in art and creativity.

    “All of the 18 different districts around Victoria Harbor have public artwork installations. We are just one of them. There are over 20, 30 public installations, so it’s a beautiful, nice scene there,” says Mak.

    “And then also you can enjoy art. Hong Kong is a tiny gem. We call it a little pearl, right?” she says. “Sometimes, maybe you pass by, you miss it, because China has so many things, but don’t forget Hong Kong.”

    Maisie Ho, the director of the HKETONY, told China Daily: “We are excited to share a facet of Hong Kong’s culture with the American audience through our partnership with Chocolate Rain. This exhibition beautifully melds tradition with contemporary aesthetics, celebrating the vibrant creativity of our homegrown talent in the United States.

    “We wanted to bring Chocolate Rain here just to remind us of the joy they have in their hearts,” she says. “Culture can do that — linking the hearts between the two peoples. People also have a lot of passion for Hong Kong — Hong Kong food and Hong Kong icons.”

    Ho invited people to visit Hong Kong to try authentic offerings such as pineapple buns, egg tarts and dim sum, and to explore the city, which offers experiences that may seem familiar to Americans yet are uniquely Hong Kong in style, reflecting its distinct place in Chinese culture.

    “There are lots of similarities between Hong Kong and the US. I encourage everybody to either discover or rediscover Hong Kong,” she says, adding that visitors will be amazed by the latest developments to the city, and China has been welcoming to international visitors.
