    Hockey Preview: Wolverines Set For Top-Ten Clash with Western Michigan

    The No. 6 Michigan Wolverines (9-2-1) are set for a top-10 clash against their third-straight ranked opponent in No. 7 Western Michigan (8-1-1). The Broncos are winners of five of their last six and will be looking to cement themselves as legitimate national championship contenders in a critical non-conference home-and-home series.

    Led by a quartet of talented scorers, Pat Ferschweiler’s team is once again anchored by one of the country’s top offenses. Fifth-year forward Tim Washe (5G, 7A) is the headliner. Washe provides a big veteran presence and uplifts every player on the ice. Leading the team with a ridiculous +11, Washe will be a defensive focal point for the Wolverines every time he’s on the ice.

    Joining Washe up front is a duo of talented sophomores who each carry a specific offensive responsibility for the Broncos. Leading goal scorer Owen Michaels (6G, 2A) and leading set-up man Grant Slukynsky (2G, 8A) perfectly complement each other’s games and mesh seamlessly with Washe.

    On the blue line, Western Michigan has taken a step in large part due to true freshman Iiro Hakkarainen (2 G, 3A). The young Finn has helped take the team’s defense — currently ranked fourth in the country in scoring defense — to another level. While his scoring numbers won’t wow anyone, Hakkarainen leads the team in blocked shots (10) and is second in +/- with a +10.

    In net, Western Michigan deploys the same senior/freshman goalie rotation as the Wolverines — only better. Freshman Hampton Slukynsky leads the nation in save percentage (.949), and senior Cameron Rowe (.938) is also in the top-10. The only team to beat the Broncos this season is fourth-ranked Boston College. Michigan will have its hands full this weekend, but the Wolverines are also one of the hottest and most surprising teams in college hockey.

    Coming off a prolific 16-goal scoring barrage against Penn State, Michigan took its offense to a new heights in Happy Valley. The Wolverines are led by true freshman Michael Hage (8G, 8A) who is coming off a seven-point weekend and the Big Ten’s First Star of the Week recognition. Not to be outdone, T.J. Hughes (5G, 7A) finally overcame his slow start to the season and added five goals (six points) against Penn State to earn the conference’s second Star of the Week.

    Defensively, the Wolverines took a step back against the Nittany Lions, allowing 11 goals in two games. Michigan had only allowed eight goals in its previous four games, so the blue line will have to get back on track to slow down the prolific Broncos. Despite the regression, Ethan Edwards and Dakoda Rheaume-mullen continue to block shots at an absurd rate, as both players have absorbed 18 so far this season.

    In net, the rotation took a beating on the road last week. Logan Stein (.914) lost two-tenths of his season save percentage and allowed two more goals in his Friday night start than his last four starts combined. Freshman Cameron Korpi also struggled, allowing six goals in his start and dipping his save percentage (.890) south of .900.

    Given their track record, last weekend appears to be an aberration for the Wolverines’ defense. The most important thing is they found a new way to win when they needed it. However, getting back to a championship standard on both ends of the ice against a legitimate Frozen Four contender and well-rounded team leaves little time for growing pains.

    Key to the Game

    Reignite the penalty kill and keep the power play hot. Michigan’s penalty-kill started the season on fire, but has waned in recent weeks. Although it is still operating at a decent level — .795 is nothing to scoff at — if the Wolverines want to make a run in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournament, all special teams must be operating at a high level. Despite the dip in efficiency, Michigan is still third in the country in short-handed goals with three.

    On the bright side, Michigan’s power play has finally caught up with Brandon Naurato’s reputation. The Wolverines have quietly rocketed up the rankings and now rank fifth nationally with a .289 power-play conversion. If the Wolverines can stay hot on the PP and string together a .900 PK weekend, Michigan could extend its winning streak to eight.

    The fan who reportedly confronted Roy Keane following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town on Sunday has shared his version of events on social media.

    Mail Sport exclusively revealed how Keane had snapped back at a fan who had been hurling abuse at him after the Premier League clash at Portman Road. 

    Keane was overheard inviting the fan to continue their argument out in the ‘car park’ moments after the game ended on Sunday afternoon. 

    The fan in question, Neil Finbow, later took to Facebook to describe the altercation – calling it his ‘new claim to fame.

    Finbow wrote: ‘New claim to fame. Just been offered out into the car park by Roy Keane after a few choice words.’

    He went on to add: ‘Even Jamie Redknapp had to come over to get him away. Just your average Sunday evening out.’

    Finbow went on to detail the exchange, writing: ‘I was reminding him that he set us back five years and ruined our football club. I also mentioned how he wasn’t fit to step foot anywhere near our ground [Portman Road]. 

    ‘Oh, and I mentioned about him walking out on a World Cup and breaking Haaland’s leg and putting it in his autobiography. I hate the bloke, and that’s been boiling up since he got sacked all those years ago.’ 

    When another Facebook user commented on Finbow’s post, saying, ‘I can see why he offered you out in the car park now. But fair dos mate for having the b*lls,’ Finbow replied: ‘The truth hurts, mate. I feel sick when I look at him.’

    He added in another response: ‘Few home truths thrown at him, he decided to bite. Very unprofessional. I’m sure he had worse when he was playing.’ 

    The incident unfolded when Keane, alongside fellow Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Izzy Christiansen, was receiving instructions from producers to return to the broadcast following an ad break. 

    A video shared exclusively by Mail Sport captured the moment Keane, 53, set his microphone down, put his hands in his pockets, and approached the fan who was located in the stands. 

    A heated back-and-forth ensued, with Keane repeatedly inviting the fan to ‘wait and discuss it in the car park’ as more insults were directed his way.

    The situation escalated as other Ipswich supporters joined in, with one individual from the upper tier shouting: ‘F*** you, Keane!’.

    A member of the Sky Sports production team eventually guided Keane back to the broadcast area as the fan appeared to relish provoking a reaction. 

    Redknapp also stepped in, exchanging a few words with the fan while a nearby steward attempted to diffuse the tension.

    Keane’s tumultuous relationship with Ipswich Town fans stems from his stint as the club’s manager between 2009 and 2011. 

    During his tenure, Keane managed 81 games, winning 28, losing 28, and drawing 25. His side dropped as low as 21st in the Championship standings before he was sacked in January 2011. 

    Reflecting on his time at Ipswich, Keane has previously admitted that his ongoing feud with sections of the fanbase served as motivation during his time in charge.

    Sunday’s confrontation with Finbow comes just months after another high-profile incident involving the Manchester United legend. 

    In September 2023, Arsenal fan Scott Law was convicted of headbutting Keane during a match at the Emirates Stadium. 

    Law was banned from attending football matches for three years after being found guilty of common assault at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.

    During that trial, Keane described the shock of being attacked while walking with fellow pundit Micah Richards to deliver post-match analysis:

    ‘There was lots of noise and shouting, as you would expect at a football match. I was just walking and, before I knew it, I was hit. 

    ‘I felt the contact and fell back through some doors. I was absolutely not expecting it. The only way I can describe it is that I was in shock. I didn’t expect it to happen, not when I was in my workplace.’

    Keane – who captained Manchester United during his playing days – revealed he suffered bruising to his chest and arms as a result of the assault.

    The confrontation with the Ipswich fan came shortly after Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, began his tenure with a disappointing 1-1 draw. 

    Amorim’s side got off to a flying start, with Marcus Rashford converting an Amad Diallo cross just two minutes in.

    However, United’s momentum quickly fizzled out, and Ipswich equalised through Omari Hutchinson’s stunning strike from outside the penalty area before halftime. 

    Speaking at the break, Keane criticised United’s cautious approach after their early lead: ‘Great start from United, bet the manager couldn’t believe it. United get a great start and then sit back, and I’m thinking, what are you waiting for? Go after Ipswich. 

    ‘But they sit back and give them a lot of encouragement, and they certainly deserved their equaliser. I’d go back to a 4-4-2, big striker up front,’ he joked.

    Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been spotted back in a football stadium for the first time since his sacking earlier this week. 

    The Dutchman’s reign as United boss ended on Monday morning following their controversial 2-1 defeat by West Ham. 

    Ten Hag’s two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford yielded FA Cup and Carabao Cup honours but his side underperformed in the league, especially in his final full season, which ended with club finishing eighth – their lowest-ever position in the Premier League. 

    Ten Hag swiftly jetted back home to the Netherlands following his dismissal and he has now been spotted attending a match in the Dutch Eredivisie between Heracles Almelo and NAC Breda.

    The 54-year-old was on hand to witness the home side claim a 2-0 win thanks to a brace from Brian De Keersmaecker at the Erve Asito stadium.

    Hockey Recap: Michigan and St. Cloud State swap shutouts in weekend clash

    Following a win and a tie on the road last weekend against Arizona State, the Michigan men’s ice hockey team returned home to Yost to welcome the Huskies of St. Cloud State for a two-game series with games on Friday night and Saturday night.

    Michigan was looking to build on the momentum it had built last weekend, and wound up settling for a series split at home. Here’s a brief rundown of all the action from Yost.

    We’ll fast forward to the second period a scoreless first in Friday night’s game. It was a defensive battle early on, but Michigan was routinely getting to the net and getting shots on St. Cloud State’s Isak Posch. The Wolverine aggression, though, led to two St. Cloud State power plays in the period that were successfully killed by Michigan.

    The teams entered the third period still deadlocked in a scoreless tie. Finally, it was Michigan’s Garrett Schifsky that found the back of the net, scoring a shorthanded goal with about 15 minutes left. Michigan added to its lead about five minutes later, as Michael Hage scored an unassisted goal to push the score to 2-0. The Wolverines put the final nail in the coffin with less than four minutes to go, as Philippe Lappointe scored an empty-netter, giving us a 3-0 final score.

    The Michigan defense did an excellent job of keeping goaltender Logan Stein clean, as St. Cloud State only managed 21 shots in the first game. Stein held strong and earned his first shutout of the year.

    Game two got off to a bit of a faster start, but not in a good way. With just over 12 minutes to go in the first period, Michigan’s Kienan Draper was issued a five-minute penalty for high sticking. The Huskies converted on the power play for the early 1-0 lead.

    The teams went scoreless through the second period, but St. Cloud State came out firing to begin the third. Just 25 seconds into the frame, Gavyn Thoreson scored to put the Huskies up 2-0. Michigan pulled Stein late in the game to spark the offense, but St. Cloud State was able to take advantage with an empty net goal to go up 3-0, and added another goal with 22 seconds to play. The Wolverines lost the series finale by a 4-0 final score.

    While the weekend ended on a sour note, the Wolverines advanced to 3-2-1 on the season. Michigan won’t have a series next weekend, but will face off against the U.S. National Team Development Program’s Under-18 team on Friday night at Yost. After that, Michigan will head out on the road the following weekend for a series against Boston University.

    CHEBOYGAN – Results-wise, it’s been a difficult season for the Cheboygan Chiefs on the soccer pitch.  

    The good news is their overall play has improved drastically since the start of the campaign.

    Evidence of that was provided on Monday by the Chiefs, who created chances and looked dangerous at times despite an 8-0 home loss to Boyne City.

    Charlton Athletic are currently fourth in the League One table, although they have not played the most entertaining football to get themselves in that position.




    The Addicks have won 1-0 on three occasions so far during the 2024/25 campaign, and there is no doubt that Nathan Jones would be delighted if his side can grind out another narrow victory when they visit Stevenage in League One on Saturday.

    Charlton were beaten by Steve Bruce’s in-form Blackpool at The Valley last Saturday, so there will surely be a response this weekend as they look to get back to winning ways at the Lamex Stadium.

    Stevenage have failed to score in four of their last five games, so their game against Charlton, who are the side that have scored the fewest number of goals in the top half of League One, is unlikely to be the most high-scoring fixture of the day in the third tier.

    Those three teams, as well as Wrexham, have all kept four clean sheets, which is more than any other club in the division. The Addicks kept just five clean sheets throughout the whole of last season, showing how much of an improvement they have made defensively this term.

    Those stats suggest that it could be a low-scoring game on Saturday, a suggestion which is backed up by the fact that both sides rank in the bottom four for shots on target per match in League One so far this season. Stevenage have averaged just 2.7 shots on target per match, while Charlton have averaged 3.1.

    Somewhat unsurprisingly, Stevenage games have had the fewest number of goals in the third tier this season, while Charlton supporters have seen the third-fewest, despite their side being in the play-off places.


    Another stat which suggests that this game will not be one for the purists is fouls per match in League One. Only Exeter City and Leyton Orient have committed more fouls than the 14.9 that Stevenage have made per 90 minutes, with Charlton following closely in fourth with an average of 14.6.

    Last season, this clash ended in a 1-1 draw after Corey Blackett-Taylor equalised with a late penalty in Michael Appleton’s first game in charge of the Addicks, before the reverse fixture ended 0-0 with Jones in the Charlton dugout at The Valley.

    Charlton should try and take the game to Stevenage

    The game on Saturday is the first in a run of difficult fixtures for Stevenage that will also see them face Wrexham, Peterborough United and Bolton Wanderers in League One, so they will be hoping for a win in front of their own fans.

    The Boro earned a point in their 0-0 draw with Wigan in midweek, so it would be no surprise to see them set up in a similar way against Charlton.


    The Addicks will be hoping to pick up all three points, but they will need to make a much faster start than they did in their win over Shrewsbury Town a fortnight ago, and against Blackpool last week.

    Jones will be aware that only one of the seven goals Charlton have scored in League One this season has come in the first half of a game, so he may want to take the game to Stevenage in order to avoid the game becoming scrappy and petering out in the second half.

    The Welshman dropped impressive new centre-back Alex Mitchell for the visit of Blackpool, a decision he no doubt regretted once the Seasiders found themselves 2-0 up before half-time, so it would be a real surprise if he did not return to the starting lineup on Saturday.

    It will be interesting to see how the game unfolds, but the stats suggest that Stevenage vs Charlton could bring out the worst of Nathan Jones’ football based on what we have seen so far this season. However, as is always the case, the away supporters will not be complaining if it results in them going home with all three points.

    2023 was a year to remember for Indiana men’s soccer, as it won a share of the Big Ten regular season title and the Big Ten Tournament Championship. Similarly, Yale University conquered the Ivy League Tournament after a third-place finish in the regular season. 

    Now, the two conference tournament champions are set to meet in Bloomington, neither sporting a win on their record this season. But for the Hoosiers, the key is building on their impressive performance in the 2-2 draw against Notre Dame. 

    “I think we play like that, we’re going to have a lot of wins this season,” senior forward Tommy Mihalic said Aug. 29. “I’m excited for that.” 

    Confident freshmen emerging 

    Indiana’s first goal against the Fighting Irish featured a freshman-to-freshman connection, as center back Josh Maher assisted forward Michael Nesci, earning the duo their first collegiate assist and goal, respectively. 

    Through two games, Nesci is Indiana’s go-to off the bench. In the 2-0 defeat to Saint Louis, he produced energetic flashes in 60 minutes of game time. Those moments were rewarded with 57 minutes against Notre Dame, and Nesci took full advantage, generating two shots, including the equalizer. 

    “He’s a confident kid,” Indiana head coach Todd Yeagley said Aug. 29. “You can see he doesn’t play like a typical freshman. He’s a goal scorer.” 

    Maher was the other top-performing freshman Yeagley highlighted after the Notre Dame match. Thrown into the starting lineup against the 2023 national championship runners-up, Maher delivered a calm, confident performance that triggered memories of his older brothers, Jack and Josh, two former Hoosier center backs. 

    “You look at him tonight, and you guys are like, ‘I’ve seen that before,’” Yeagley said. “He didn’t play like a freshman.” 

    In the 35th minute, sophomore forward Collins Oduro was forced off the field after a crunching tackle from Notre Dame senior defender Kyle Genenbacher, who received a yellow card for the challenge. 

    Oduro never returned, and although Yeagley had no definitive update after the game, he was quick to quell any major injury concerns. 

    “Just a bit of an ankle turn,” Yeagley said. “I think he’ll be fine for Sunday.” 

    In his freshman campaign, Oduro netted five goals and added two assists, earning Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors and Top Drawer Soccer Best XI Freshman Team. One of his best attributes was his fitness, as he was one of two Hoosiers to start all 24 games last season, but that feat will now be put to the test. 

    In its first double-digit win season since 2019, Yale won the Ivy League Tournament and clinched the only NCAA Tournament berth for the conference in 2023. Ultimately, their season ended in the second round, but the Bulldogs achieved their furthest showing in the tournament in over fifteen years, ending the year with an 11-6-3 record.  

    Key departures over the offseason included forward Eric Lagos, who graduated after scoring a team-high eight goals, and forward Max Rogers, who transferred to Maryland after contributing four goals and seven assists for the Bulldogs. 

    The retention of both senior midfielder Quanah Brayboy and senior goalkeeper Chris Edwards was crucial for Yale’s production. Brayboy provided nine assists in 2023, while Edwards played every minute in the season, accumulating 54 saves and eight shutouts.  

    Yale’s 2024 season began with a 1-0 home defeat to Marquette University, a squad which holds a 3-0 record and received three votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll. 

    Kickoff between the Hoosiers and the Bulldogs is slated for 8 p.m. Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
