  • Delhi Customer Reports Cockroach In Coffee From LOpera, Bakery Responds

Delhi Customer Reports Cockroach In Coffee From LOpera, Bakery Responds

Food safety is of utmost importance but it can be difficult to be sure of food hygiene when purchasing meals and drinks from outside. In a recent Reddit post, a customer reported that they found a cockroach floating on the surface of their cold coffee purchased from L’Opera, Khan Market, Delhi. Shared by Redditor @WaltzSimple6037, the user posted a picture of the iced latte and you can see ice cubes floating on top, along with the reported cockroach. In the other picture, the customer posted a picture of the bill, showing proof of purchase.

The post read, “I visited Lopera today in Khan Market and ordered an iced latte to go. When I opened the drink, I thought I saw a coffee bean floating around, but when I flipped it over, it was a freaking cockroach.”

The customer reported that the staff was “nonchalant” with “no real concern at all”. They added, “I’m seriously questioning how clean this place is now. What made it worse was how the staff handled it-they were so nonchalant and just kept saying sorry like robots, no real concern at all. If hygiene is this bad at such a well-known cafe, I can’t even imagine what it’s like at other places in India. Anyone else had similar issues here or at other cafes? This was such a letdown.”

Responding to the incident, L’Opera Management told NDTV, “In the afternoon of Friday, October 4th two drinks were served at one of L’Opera’s outlets in Delhi to two customers as take-aways. Some ten minutes later, one of the customers returned to the outlet complaining about the presence of an insect in one of the takeaway drinks.”

“Notwithstanding the fact that the product had not been under L’Opera’s control for a significant duration, the staff immediately apologised, refunded the purchase price and offered to replace the drink. The customer preferred to accept the refund and declined the offer. In subsequent exchanges with the customer which involved her family and friends, the more senior staff of L’Opera renewed the apology. Whatever the exact circumstances of this case may have been, a L’Opera customer has been very regretfully unsatisfied, something we profoundly regret,” L’Opera said.

Meanwhile, the Reddit post has received 25,000 upvotes and multiple comments:

“I can never trust food from outside now,” a Redditor commented. Another wrote, “Please and please report it or complain at FSSAI.”

“Cockroast coffee,” a user joked. Another said, “There are no food standards in India, even when you pay such a high price for a drink. Post it in their X account.”

But what we love the most are the multiple recipes associated with the humble coffee. From a strong shot of espresso to a creamy latte, there are enough options for every type of palate. One such popular option is iced coffee. A summer favourite, iced coffee makes a great drink to cool you down, while re-energising you in this scorching heat. However, we have often witnessed health enthusiasts avoiding the drink completely, due to the excess fat and calorie content. If you have been one of them, then dear reader, we have found you all the reasons to rejoice. You heard us. In this article, we will show you a healthy version of iced coffee that is low in calories too. This recipe has been shared by nutritionist and weight loss coach Mohita Mascarenhas.

Is It Safe To Drink Coffee In Summer?

We all know coffee contains caffeine, which is diuretic in nature. According to consultant nutritionist Rupali Datta, this may cause excess fluid loss in the body, leading to dehydration. However, she adds, “Several studies have negated the notion that coffee is dehydrating.” In fact, the expert says that if consumed in moderation, coffee can easily be a part of your summer diet.

  • Think Ghee Coffee Will Help You Lose Weight? Luke Coutinho Has Something To Say

Think Ghee Coffee Will Help You Lose Weight? Luke Coutinho Has Something To Say

Ghee, also called clarified butter, is widely used in Indian cuisine for cooking. Ghee is made up of healthy fats and helps improve digestion, gut health and may even aid weight loss. Talking about weight loss, there is one beverage that has risen in popularity in the past few years for its reported weight loss benefits. This drink is called ghee coffee or bullet coffee, in which a small amount of ghee is mixed or blended with black coffee. People usually consume this drink first thing in the morning. Many celebrities have also admitted that they drink this unusual combination regularly as part of their fitness diet.

But does ‘ghee coffee’ work holistically in the long run? Calling this drink as a “shortcut”, integrative lifestyle expert Luke Coutinho said he would like to take “many moments of silence for the people who think ghee coffee will help them lose weight.” On his Instagram handle, he wrote, “There are no shortcuts to fat loss.” According to Luke, the better way to consume ghee and coffee is “separately”.

For weight loss, he suggests “eat smart, move more, sleep and breathe deep and stay consistent…keep it simple.” He added, “Stop looking for shortcuts and cherry-picking science to suit your fads…do the work, change your behaviour and actions and repeat.”

The post caught the attention of diet-conscious viewers and people on a weight loss journey. Soon, the comments section flooded with doubts and remarks around ‘ghee coffee’. Take a look:

An Instagram user wrote, “Oh I just had it a few days ago..just one time..but it helped me not to have unwanted cravings for a good 3- 4 hours.” To this, Luke said, “What happens when you have cravings again in the evening or night …it’s better to work on behaviour than these fads. Protein can do the same too.”

A person following food trends asked, “If it’s not good then why are celebrities and their so-called high-profile nutritionists promoting this everywhere big time?” Another argued, “But it’s a good pre-workout giving cleaner energy than the sugar-loaded ones people generally have.” To this, the lifestyle coach replied, “The only energy you need before a workout is apt from great mitochondrial health.”

One joked, “Better to have Ghee Halwa than Ghee Coffee.” Sharing a pointer from Luke’s previous work, one asked, “What about coffee with coconut oil … I read in your book it acts as a fat burner.” To this, he said, “Coconut oil and ghee are different … Coconut is an MCT (medium chain triglycerides) and yeah that makes sense.”

  • Ground Floor Coffee which operated out of Pasir Ris HDB flat finds permanent home ‘a stone’s throw away’, Lifestyle News

Ground Floor Coffee which operated out of Pasir Ris HDB flat finds permanent home ‘a stone’s throw away’, Lifestyle News

Home-based business Ground Floor Coffee has made its comeback, shortly after announcing the closure of its operations last month.

The coffee joint had made quite a stir when it first opened its doors (or windows, in their case) to customers in June 2022, selling coffee out of their ground-floor Pasir Ris HDB flat.

Their brews not only drew a long queue — quite an unusual sight in the quiet HDB estate — but also went viral for its unusual concept.

So it was not surprising that many were dismayed when its owner Adhwa Hasif announced the closure of their home-based business with the last day on Aug 18. No reasons were given at the time for the sudden decision.

Subsequent posts on their Instagram page, however, hinted at a comeback.

A video posted to page on Sept 20 showed “Ground Floor Coffee” stickers being pasted on plastic cups within what looked like a shop space.

Excited responses from followers ensued: “Is this what I think it is?”

The same day, another video confirmed that they had found a more permanent, albeit separate, “home” for their business.

“No matter what knocks you down in life, get back up and keep going. From Pasir Ris to the world,” stated the caption, which saw a “For Rent” sign being replaced by one which read “FOR GFC (Ground Floor Coffee)”.

To a query which asked if the shop would still be in Pasir Ris, the account owner replied that it was “a stone’s throw away”.

After the suspense, it was finally revealed yesterday (Sept 21) that the cafe is situated at East Village mall #01-53, located at 430 Upper Changi Road, near Simpang Bedok.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/DALzHskyJz3/?img_index=1

The business also held its official opening yesterday. According to their Instagram bio, they are open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 8pm.

From what has been shared on social media, however, the shop is still primarily a takeaway outfit with no seats available for dining in.

And while the location being a stone’s throw away from Pasir Ris is debatable, what’s not is the response to the opening, with many excitedly congratulating Hasif and his wife on their achievement.

The takeaway coffee business is the brainchild of Hasif, a freelance photographer and self-taught barista.

Speaking to AsiaOne two years ago, Hasif had shared how what began as a passion turned into a business operating out of his home window and which regularly sold out every day.

“I honestly didn’t expect anything. I didn’t plan to make this as a business actually!”

But life evidently had other plans.

AsiaOne has reached out to Ground Floor Coffee to find out more.

‘We tried everything to make this work’: Epigram Coffee Bookshop announces closure, Lifestyle News

Local book lovers, you might want to turn away for this one.

Epigram Books took to its social media outlets on Thursday (Sept 19) to announce the closure of its only brick-and-mortar store, Epigram Coffee Bookshop.

The caption read: “This week has been a tough one for Singapore’s book community, and we are even more disheartened to share with you this unfortunate news.”

Located at the Singapore Art Museum, the store is set to cease operations on Jan 26, 2025.

In a press release shared on the same day, publisher at Epigram Books Edmund Wee said: “We tried everything to make this work.”

A combination of low foot traffic and sales “made it impossible” for Epigram Coffee Bookshop to continue running.

“Thank you for all the love and support over the years,” the local business said, showing appreciation to their customers.

Distraught fans headed to the comments section to share their immediate reaction.

Author Yeo Chuen Chuen mentioned how sad she was to learn of Epigram Coffee Bookshop’s imminent closure, before thanking them for hosting her book launch.

She added: “You’ll always be a part of this beautiful memory.”

Another Instagram user described the news as “devastating” and hoped all is well for the local business.

Epigram Books mentioned it remains uncertain when it comes to the possibility of opening another physical store.

It added: “Unless rent prices relent, it’s unlikely we’ll move into another space.”

Customers can expect a closing down sale in due time.

    Singapore book scene

Despite this closure, Epigram Books’ online store is expected to continue running.

“We’ve come this far with everyone’s support, and we look forward to continued support from our readers as we transition to focus on online sales,” Edmund said.

Opened in May 2022, Epigram Coffee Bookshops has provided a platform for Singapore books, whether it be written by Singaporeans, published in Singapore or written about Singapore.

The bookstore publishes all manner of fiction and non-fiction, from novels to picture books, memoirs to cookbooks, graphic novels to poetry.

This has not been the only blow for book lovers in Singapore this week.

Epigram Coffee Bookshops’ announcement comes off the back of Times Bookstores imminent closure.

Sept 22 will be the final day of operation of its last outlet at Jelita Shopping Centre on Holland Road and marks the retailer’s exit from Singapore.

She was sitting behind the man who made the coffee and ended up capturing the entire process.
