    CASSIS, France — In the moment when her world shattered three years ago, Stephanie Mistre found her 15-year-old daughter, Marie, lifeless in the bedroom where she died by suicide.

    “I went from light to darkness in a fraction of a second,” Mistre said, describing the day in September 2021 that marked the start of her fight against TikTok, the Chinese-owned video app she blames for pushing her daughter toward despair.

    Delving into her daughter’s phone after her death, Mistre discovered videos promoting suicide methods, tutorials and comments encouraging users to go beyond “mere suicide attempts.” She said TikTok’s algorithm had repeatedly pushed such content to her daughter.

    “It was brainwashing,” said Mistre, who lives in Cassis, near Marseille, in the south of France. “They normalized depression and self-harm, turning it into a twisted sense of belonging.”

    Now Mistre and six other families are suing TikTok France, accusing the platform of failing to moderate harmful content and exposing children to life-threatening material. Out of the seven families, two experienced the loss of a child.

    Asked about the lawsuit, TikTok said its guidelines forbid any promotion of suicide and that it employs 40,000 trust and safety professionals worldwide — hundreds of which are French-speaking moderators — to remove dangerous posts. The company also said it refers users who search for suicide-related videos to mental health services.

    Before killing herself, Marie Le Tiec made several videos to explain her decision, citing various difficulties in her life, and quoted a song by the Louisiana-based emo rap group Suicideboys, who are popular on TikTok.

    Her mother also claims that her daughter was repeatedly bullied and harassed at school and online. In addition to the lawsuit, the 51-year-old mother and her husband have filed a complaint against five of Marie’s classmates and her previous high school.

    Above all, Mistre blames TikTok, saying that putting the app “in the hands of an empathetic and sensitive teenager who does not know what is real from what is not is like a ticking bomb.”

    Scientists have not established a clear link between social media and mental health problems or psychological harm, said Grégoire Borst, a professor of psychology and cognitive neuroscience at Paris-Cité University.

    “It’s very difficult to show clear cause and effect in this area,” Borst said, citing a leading peer-reviewed study that found only 0.4% of the differences in teenagers’ well-being could be attributed to social media use.

    Additionally, Borst pointed out that no current studies suggest TikTok is any more harmful than rival apps such as Snapchat, X, Facebook or Instagram.

    While most teens use social media without significant harm, the real risks, Borst said, lie with those already facing challenges such as bullying or family instability.

    “When teenagers already feel bad about themselves and spend time exposed to distorted images or harmful social comparisons,” it can worsen their mental state, Borst said.

    Lawyer Laure Boutron-Marmion, who represents the seven families suing TikTok, said their case is based on “extensive evidence.” The company “can no longer hide behind the claim that it’s not their responsibility because they don’t create the content,” Boutron-Marmion said.

    The lawsuit alleges that TikTok’s algorithm is designed to trap vulnerable users in cycles of despair for profit and seeks reparations for the families.

    “Their strategy is insidious,” Mistre said. “They hook children into depressive content to keep them on the platform, turning them into lucrative re-engagement products.”

    Boutron-Marmion noted that TikTok’s Chinese version, Douyin, features much stricter content controls for young users. It includes a “youth mode” mandatory for users under 14 that restricts screen time to 40 minutes a day and offers only approved content.

    “It proves they can moderate content when they choose to,” Boutron-Marmion said. “The absence of these safeguards here is telling.”

    A report titled “Children and Screens,” commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron in April and to which Borst contributed, concluded that certain algorithmic features should be considered addictive and banned from any app in France. The report also called for restricting social media access for minors under 15 in France. Neither measure has been adopted.

    TikTok, which faced being shut down in the U.S. until President Donald Trump suspended a ban on it, has also come under scrutiny globally.

    The U.S. has seen similar legal efforts by parents. One lawsuit in Los Angeles County accuses Meta and its platforms Instagram and Facebook, as well as Snapchat and TikTok, of designing defective products that cause serious injuries. The lawsuit lists three teens who died by suicide. In another complaint, two tribal nations accuse major social media companies, including YouTube owner Alphabet, of contributing to high rates of suicide among Native youths.

    Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized to parents who had lost children while testifying last year in the U.S. Senate.

    In December, Australia enacted a groundbreaking law banning social media accounts for children under 16.

    In France, Boutron-Marmion expects TikTok Limited Technologies, the European Union subsidiary for ByteDance — the Chinese company that owns TikTok — to answer the allegations in the first quarter of 2025. Authorities will later decide whether and when a trial would take place.

    When contacted by The Associated Press, TikTok said it had not been notified about the French lawsuit, which was filed in November. It could take months for the French justice system to process the complaint and for authorities in Ireland — home to TikTok’s European headquarters — to formally notify the company, Boutron-Marmion said.

    Instead, a Tiktok spokesperson highlighted company guidelines that prohibit content promoting suicide or self-harm.

    Critics argue that TikTok’s claims of robust moderation fall short.

    Imran Ahmed, the CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, dismissed TikTok’s assertion that over 98.8% of harmful videos had been flagged and removed between April and June.

    When asked about the blind spots of their moderation efforts, social media platforms claim that users are able to bypass detection by using ambiguous language or allusions that algorithms struggle to flag, Ahmed said.

    The term “algospeak” has been coined to describe techniques such as using zebra or armadillo emojis to talk about cutting yourself, or the Swiss flag emoji as an allusion to suicide.

    Such code words “aren’t particularly sophisticated,” Ahmed said. “The only reason TikTok can’t find them when independent researchers, journalists and others can is because they’re not looking hard enough,” Ahmed said.

    Ahmed’s organization conducted a study in 2022 simulating the experience of a 13-year-old girl on TikTok.

    “Within 2.5 minutes, the accounts were served self-harm content,” Ahmed said. “By eight minutes, they saw eating disorder content. On average, every 39 seconds, the algorithm pushed harmful material.”

    The algorithm “knows that eating disorder and self-harm content is especially addictive” for young girls.

    For Mistre, the fight is deeply personal. Sitting in her daughter’s room, where she has kept the decor untouched for the last three years, she said parents must know about the dangers of social media.

    Had she known about the content being sent to her daughter, she never would have allowed her on TikTok, she said. Her voice breaks as she describes Marie as a “sunny, funny” teenager who dreamed of becoming a lawyer.

    “In memory of Marie, I will fight as long as I have the strength,” she said. “Parents need to know the truth. We must confront these platforms and demand accountability.”

    Content creators respond to TikTok’s uncertain future in the US

    TikTok content creators who make a living promoting their businesses and personal brands on the app were afraid Sunday that they would have to find new ways to engage consumers and make money as the app’s future in the United States remained uncertain.

    TikTok told U.S. users that it was beginning to restore service just hours after the popular video-sharing platform went dark in response to a federal ban, which President-elect Donald Trump said he would try to pause by executive order on his first day in office.

    Some users reported Sunday that the app was working again, but it remained unavailable for download in Apple and Google’s app stores. Others remained locked out of accessing their profiles and the communities they had built online.

    Here’s how content creators are reacting:

    On a typical morning, esthetician and social media personality Lee Zavorskas scrolls on TikTok while she sips coffee. Sunday morning was different – she scribbled a to-do list instead, which included playing with her cats and dog and plotting how to bolster her presence on other platforms like YouTube since TikTok went dark for her Saturday night.

    “I’m a 58-year-old content creator that found a seat at the table that’s not available on Instagram,” Zavorskas said.

    While Zavorskas has more followers on Instagram, she found a large crowd of people over the age of 40 on TikTok, making it easier to build her audience. She held out some hope that she would be able to return to the community she found on the app.

    “It’s like going to your favorite restaurant and ordering your favorite food, and they’re like, ‘You know what? We took it away,’” she said.

    Tiffany Cianci, a Maryland-based content creator who owns small businesses, stopped posting on Twitter and Instagram and cut her advertising with Meta and Google out of frustration.

    “It’s TikTok or nothing for me,” she said.

    She thinks lawmakers unfairly punished TikTok for succeeding alongside its profitable competitors. And they played “political football” with an app that millions of small businesses rely on to survive, she said.

    “I spoke to small businesses in the last three days that have sobbed on my livestreams, afraid they’ll have to lay their employees off tomorrow morning,” Cianci said. “They are so afraid because they have other people’s lives in their hands.”

    Tiffany Watson, a 20-year-old beauty content creator, had been making videos since the days of Musical.ly, and was just starting to figure out the kind of content she was passionate about when TikTok went dark.

    “The community on TikTok is like nothing else, so it’s weird to not have that anymore,” she said.

    With spare time on her hands, Watson plans to focus on bolstering her presence on Instagram and YouTube. She also wants to devote more time to school as the psychology major and criminal justice minor prepares to graduate from Wingate University in North Carolina and enter “the real world.” But being a content creator remains her “main dream,” she said.

    If Trump lifts the ban, Watson plans to return to TikTok, but said she will “probably be more tuned into my YouTube since this ban has kinda spooked me.”

    BUCHAREST, Romania — TikTok took down several networks that tried to meddle in Romania’s elections, executives said Tuesday as they defended the company’s election integrity measures to European Union lawmakers.

    The video-sharing platform is a focus of controversy in the Eastern European country after far-right outsider Calin Georgescu emerged as the frontrunner in the vote, plunging the country into turmoil amid allegations of electoral violations and Russian meddling.

    Among the networks that TikTok uncovered were two small groups that it disrupted on Friday, days after the first round of voting, Brie Pegum, the platform’s global head of product, authenticity and transparency, told a committee.

    Both networks targeted Romanian users. One had only 1,781 followers and supported Georgescu, who was a little-known independent candidate until he set off shockwaves by convincingly winning the first round of voting, beating out the incumbent prime minister. The other networks supported different candidates, Pegum said.

    Many observers chalked up Georgescu’s success to his TikTok account, which now has 5.8 million likes and 527,000 followers.

    He gained huge traction and popularity in the weeks leading up to the first vote. But experts suspect Georgescu’s online following was artificially inflated while officials hinted that he was given preferential treatment by TikTok.

    The controversy highlights how TikTok has become a key election tool in Romania, an EU and NATO member state that shares a long border with war-torn Ukraine.

    TikTok applied its “global playbook” for the Romanian election and took a local approach with staff on the ground, said Caroline Greer, the company’s top lobbyist in the EU.

    Greer and Pegum were being grilled by EU lawmakers about Tiktok’s role in the Romanian vote as well as its compliance with the 27-nation bloc’s Digital Services Act, a sweeping set of regulations designed to protect users online from illegal or harmful content.

    Greer said TikTok deployed 95 Romanian language content moderators, worked with a fact-checking group and met with political parties and a number of different authorities including the country’s electoral authority.

    But many lawmakers were not satisfied with their responses.

    “The feeling here is that we are losing patience … and that we need more specific answers,” said Dirk Gotink, a Dutch member of the European Parliament. He also questioned what the scores of Romanian content moderators were doing during the election, and compared Pegum and Greer to firefighters TikTok sent to put out a fire.

    “They come, they let the fire rage online for weeks, months, during an election. And then they send very nice people here into this committee to answer questions in a very polite way,” Gotink said. “But it is simply not convincing — and it also doesn’t reflect what is happening online.”

    According to a report by the Bucharest-based Expert Forum think tank, Georgescu’s TikTok account garnered 92.8 million views primarily within the last few months, a figure that grew by 52 million views a week later, just days ahead of the first-round vote.

    Another TikTok account solely featuring Georgescu content, which had 1.7 million likes on the night first-round polls closed, was removed the day after voting. It had posts with Georgescu attending church, doing judo, running around an oval track, and speaking on podcasts.

    In an emailed statement to The Associated Press on Monday, TikTok said the account was one of “more than 150 accounts impersonating Georgescu” to date that has been removed, but added: “We also removed more than 650 additional impersonation accounts belonging to other candidates.”

    Georgescu will face reformist Elena Lasconi, of the progressive Save Romania Union party, in a presidential runoff on Sunday.

She believes the rise of Asian American content creators like Tran, whose content encourages young girls to embrace their heritage and balance creativity with careers in medicine, has the potential to directly impact college students navigating similar paths and challenges.
    “Growing up there wasn’t a lot of Asian representation around me,” Keefer said. “I think it’s great that Michelle is trying to inspire young girls because if they can have someone to relate to and aspire to be in the future, that would change so much.”
    Tran, a 26-year-old Dallas-based influencer, specializes in lifestyle, beauty, and food content while balancing aspirations in both the medical field and content creation. She holds a master’s degree in biomedical sciences and health equity from Baylor College of Medicine. After graduating, she spent two years researching cholesterol metabolism at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She began creating content more seriously during a transitional period in her life, documenting and blending her lifestyle as an influencer and a graduate student while moving to Houston.
    Before Tran became interested in medicine, she said her passion for media and creativity was evident early in childhood. She showed an interest in content by editing and filming short YouTube videos and dreamed of becoming a fashion designer or news anchor.
    “I dabbled in iMovie and made vlogs when I was really young, and even started a photography club in middle school and high school, which really allowed me to use my creativity,” Tran said.

    “My mom doesn’t understand because influencer marketing itself is a very new field, and she doesn’t see being a creator as a standalone career,” Tran said. “To her, a traditional career means being a doctor, lawyer, engineer or having a corporate job, so if you’re not one of those, it’s like, ‘What are you doing?’”
    Outside of familial support, Tran advocates for the importance of a stable support system, especially one outside of the influencer circle. She believes support is detrimental to overcoming fears and anxieties.
    “I think my support system is everything,” she said,“The fear of being perceived really scared me from actually posting, and I think it helps that none of my close friends are in the field since it provides that distant support for me.”
    Tran credits her long-term boyfriend for much of this support and spoke with gleaming eyes of his efforts. She believes that without his encouragement, she would not have continued to kick-start her social media career.
    “I’m happy Michelle’s found a way to express herself creatively and also support herself financially,” said Bryan Ho, Tran’s boyfriend. “It’s been a fun and crazy ride.”
    Tran said she has been able to manage her content and stress well because she is on a management team that helps guide her on the organization of scheduled social media posts. She attributes much of her success in content planning to supportive marketing directors who set clear expectations.
    “Being friendly and guiding influencers to gear their content toward our branding is fun to me,” said Parker Damato, influencer marketing director at Glossier. “I love seeing Michelle and other influencers talk about our company through the lens of themselves.”
    Along with navigating cultural career-path stereotypes enforced by her parents, Tran also struggled to accept her heritage while growing up in the South. She said in college she felt pressured to immerse herself in white culture to fit in, which prevented her from embracing her unique traits, and left her without a strong sense of personal identity.
    “I was in a sorority and wanted that culture to be my identity so badly, but obviously our features and culture are so different,” Tran said. “I didn’t accept my Asian features and background until my junior or senior year of college, when I found friends who looked like me and had similar backgrounds.”
    The lack of Asian representation in sororities and on campus is also evident at SMU and the experience of feeling alienated as a minority often pressures college women to conform to fit in. Michelle’s content serves as a guide for college women, validating their experiences as they navigate their heritage.
    “It is difficult navigating the worlds of being Asian and embracing my culture, but also embracing my American culture,” Annie Liu, a student at SMU, said. “Having influencers like Michelle who’s navigating similar worlds really inspires me by showcasing that it is possible to live a fulfilling life in between worlds.”
    Since her undergraduate years, Tran has undergone significant personal growth, especially in her mindset toward her heritage, she said. She has come to recognize the value of uniqueness and the importance of embracing cultural differences. Now, Tran proudly celebrates her heritage by sharing her lifestyle and experiences, honoring her roots with confidence and openness.
    “I’m embracing my Vietnamese American heritage more deeply than ever, weaving it into my everyday life and sharing it openly through my content,” she said. “It’s been a journey of reconnection and pride, celebrating my culture in a way I didn’t see growing up.”
    With her personal growth and deepened understanding of Asian American struggles, Tran emphasizes the importance of empowering young Asian American girls through authentic representation. She is committed to helping them navigate similar challenges with confidence and resilience and hopes to pave the way for future generations by sharing her heritage and celebrating her roots in her work. Through her content, she aims to create a platform that honors diversity, fosters pride and encourages young girls to see themselves as capable of achieving their dreams.
    “I want Asian American girls to know they deserve to see themselves represented and celebrated in every space, including those that feel out of reach,” she said. “My hope is to inspire them to embrace their uniqueness and pursue their dreams unapologetically, even if the path hasn’t been paved yet.”
    Tran also plans on continuing to combine her cultural background and professional ambitions by creating content that documents her journey navigating a career in medicine. She aims to prove that beauty and brains can coexist —and that it should be encouraged to excel in both. For Tran, choosing one path would mean sacrificing the part of herself that thrives on writing, editing, and creative expression, while choosing the other would mean giving up her fascination with science. She can not imagine choosing only one, and has come to terms with making space for both, and hopes to promote this mindset to her young female audience.
    “I struggled with the idea of this all the time, where I have to choose between medicine and influencing,” she said. “Maybe I don’t have to pick and choose; humans are so multifaceted, and I feel like you can do both.”
    As she scrolls through her camera roll in the middle of Glossier, admiring fragments of curated content ready to be stitched together, a sense of familiarity and nostalgia for her passion for media washes over her. She reflects on her childhood.
    “If younger me knew what I was doing now, she would be so proud,” she said.

    “My mom doesn’t understand because influencer marketing itself is a very new field, and she doesn’t see being a creator as a standalone career,” Tran said. “To her, a traditional career means being a doctor, lawyer, engineer or having a corporate job, so if you’re not one of those, it’s like, ‘What are you doing?’”
    Outside of familial support, Tran advocates for the importance of a stable support system, especially one outside of the influencer circle. She believes support is detrimental to overcoming fears and anxieties.
    “I think my support system is everything,” she said,“The fear of being perceived really scared me from actually posting, and I think it helps that none of my close friends are in the field since it provides that distant support for me.”
    Tran credits her long-term boyfriend for much of this support and spoke with gleaming eyes of his efforts. She believes that without his encouragement, she would not have continued to kick-start her social media career.
    “I’m happy Michelle’s found a way to express herself creatively and also support herself financially,” said Bryan Ho, Tran’s boyfriend. “It’s been a fun and crazy ride.”
    Tran said she has been able to manage her content and stress well because she is on a management team that helps guide her on the organization of scheduled social media posts. She attributes much of her success in content planning to supportive marketing directors who set clear expectations.
    “Being friendly and guiding influencers to gear their content toward our branding is fun to me,” said Parker Damato, influencer marketing director at Glossier. “I love seeing Michelle and other influencers talk about our company through the lens of themselves.”
    Along with navigating cultural career-path stereotypes enforced by her parents, Tran also struggled to accept her heritage while growing up in the South. She said in college she felt pressured to immerse herself in white culture to fit in, which prevented her from embracing her unique traits, and left her without a strong sense of personal identity.
    “I was in a sorority and wanted that culture to be my identity so badly, but obviously our features and culture are so different,” Tran said. “I didn’t accept my Asian features and background until my junior or senior year of college, when I found friends who looked like me and had similar backgrounds.”
    The lack of Asian representation in sororities and on campus is also evident at SMU and the experience of feeling alienated as a minority often pressures college women to conform to fit in. Michelle’s content serves as a guide for college women, validating their experiences as they navigate their heritage.
    “It is difficult navigating the worlds of being Asian and embracing my culture, but also embracing my American culture,” Annie Liu, a student at SMU, said. “Having influencers like Michelle who’s navigating similar worlds really inspires me by showcasing that it is possible to live a fulfilling life in between worlds.”
    Since her undergraduate years, Tran has undergone significant personal growth, especially in her mindset toward her heritage, she said. She has come to recognize the value of uniqueness and the importance of embracing cultural differences. Now, Tran proudly celebrates her heritage by sharing her lifestyle and experiences, honoring her roots with confidence and openness.
    “I’m embracing my Vietnamese American heritage more deeply than ever, weaving it into my everyday life and sharing it openly through my content,” she said. “It’s been a journey of reconnection and pride, celebrating my culture in a way I didn’t see growing up.”
    With her personal growth and deepened understanding of Asian American struggles, Tran emphasizes the importance of empowering young Asian American girls through authentic representation. She is committed to helping them navigate similar challenges with confidence and resilience and hopes to pave the way for future generations by sharing her heritage and celebrating her roots in her work. Through her content, she aims to create a platform that honors diversity, fosters pride and encourages young girls to see themselves as capable of achieving their dreams.
    “I want Asian American girls to know they deserve to see themselves represented and celebrated in every space, including those that feel out of reach,” she said. “My hope is to inspire them to embrace their uniqueness and pursue their dreams unapologetically, even if the path hasn’t been paved yet.”
    Tran also plans on continuing to combine her cultural background and professional ambitions by creating content that documents her journey navigating a career in medicine. She aims to prove that beauty and brains can coexist —and that it should be encouraged to excel in both. For Tran, choosing one path would mean sacrificing the part of herself that thrives on writing, editing, and creative expression, while choosing the other would mean giving up her fascination with science. She can not imagine choosing only one, and has come to terms with making space for both, and hopes to promote this mindset to her young female audience.
    “I struggled with the idea of this all the time, where I have to choose between medicine and influencing,” she said. “Maybe I don’t have to pick and choose; humans are so multifaceted, and I feel like you can do both.”
    As she scrolls through her camera roll in the middle of Glossier, admiring fragments of curated content ready to be stitched together, a sense of familiarity and nostalgia for her passion for media washes over her. She reflects on her childhood.
    “If younger me knew what I was doing now, she would be so proud,” she said.
