  • New cricket boss Todd Greenberg makes a STUNNING call on Australia Day after sport vowed to cancel the national holiday

New cricket boss Todd Greenberg makes a STUNNING call on Australia Day after sport vowed to cancel the national holiday

    • Sporting body said Australia Day would not be commemorated in 2025
    • Cricket Australia did not mention Australia Day at Gabba Test
    • January 26 has become a very divisive day for Aussies

The incoming CEO of Cricket Australia says that Australia Day will be commemorated from now on after the sporting organisation decided to not make reference to the national public holiday earlier this year.

Cricket fans across the nation won’t see any team in green and gold playing on Australia Day this summer because of a clash with the Australian Open.

But recently appointed cricket CEO Todd Greenberg says that going forward Australia Day will be celebrated and cricket will be played.

‘The cricket Australia board has spoken about it and they will playing matches in the future on Australia Day – but they do understand that we will need to do that respectfully and consult the right people and the right groups,’ Greenberg told 2GB breakfast host Ben Fordham.

‘My personal view on this is that I’ve loved Australia Day since i was a kid, but when you reflect on history and listen to other people’s views you can appreciate it is a difficult day for some people.

‘So, we have to respect that, but ultimately I think what you’ll see going forward is that if there’s opportunities to play cricket on Australia Day we will be – we will just do it respectfully.

Cricket Australia refused to mention the national public holiday during the second Test at the Gabba in Brisbane earlier this year

Fordham quizzed Greenberg on what he meant by ‘respectfully’, explaining that many Australians feel like they aren’t allowed to celebrate the day.

‘Oh, no, we will be celebrating it – absolutely!’ Greenberg replied.

‘For those who who want to celebrate it, they are more than welcome to – and a day at the cricket is probably the best way to do it.

‘When I say ‘respectfully’, it’s just making sure that we understand that the day means different things to different people. And making sure we find a balance there.’

The decision to schedule the Test over the Australia Day weekend in 2024 was itself controversial, with women’s all-rounder Ash Gardner previously describing it as a day of ‘hurt and mourning’.

Gardner found support from men’s Test captain Pat Cummins and star batter Steve Smith.

Both claimed January 26 is not an appropriate time to celebrate the national holiday, with the date a highly controversial issue due to the landing of the First Fleet from Britain in Australia.

Smith formed his view after chatting with teammate Scott Boland, who has Indigenous heritage.

However Cricket Australia’s attempt to placate such opponents by shying away from acknowledging the national day also angered players who wanted the day celebrated.

Former test player Greg Ritchie was one of those.

‘I am quite disappointed to read the Cricket Australia has decided not to use the phrase ‘Australia Day’ for this Test match,’ Ritchie said.

‘It will be at the Gabba, which is my home ground, and to have an Australia Day Test there is special.’

  • Amid Asian Games Uncertainty, Cricket Axed At 2026 Commonwealth Games Ahead Of Olympics

Amid Asian Games Uncertainty, Cricket Axed At 2026 Commonwealth Games Ahead Of Olympics

With the sport’s Asian Games fate uncertain, cricket suffered a blow in its bid to become a staple at multi-sport events after being culled from the revamped 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The next Commonwealth Games was supposed to take place in regional Victoria, south-east Australia, but contentiously abandoned by the state government due to a billion-dollar cost blowout.

Amid dwindling interest, Scotland saved the day to step in as host but the next Commonwealth Games will be significantly downsized with just 10 sports left on the programme.

Cricket was among those that were axed after enjoying a return through T20 women’s cricket at the 2022 event in Birmingham. It was the first time cricket had appeared at the Commonwealth Games since 1998 and seen as something like an Olympic audition.

Its success helped strengthen cricket’s bid for Los Angeles Olympics inclusion after a long bid from the sport’s power brokers.

Cricket had not been part of multi-sport events throughout the 2000s as administrators in power nations India and England, particularly, resisted due to financial reasons.

But sentiment changed and there became an acceptance that cricket should expand beyond its traditional terrain of the British Commonwealth, especially the world’s biggest sports market of the U.S.

Major multi-sport events are deemed critical for smaller cricket countries, particularly in their efforts to bid and attain government funding. Cricket started to emerge in multi-sport events notably the Asian Games – boasting more sports and athlete quotas than the Olympics – in 2010, 2014 and last year.

But momentum has taken a hit after being removed from Scotland 2026 even though the Commonwealth Games is largely deemed as archaic, its relevance dwindling over the decades, and a relic of a bygone era.

Perhaps cricket can stomach that axing, but potentially not being part of the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, will sting. As I first reported last month, cricket faces exclusion in what would be a blow to the development of the sport in the baseball crazy country.

ForbesCricket Faces Asian Games 2026 Exclusion Ahead Of Los Angeles Olympics

A baseball stadium in Nagoya had been proposed to be repurposed, as per reports, but those close to the coalface are facing the resignation of cricket missing out.

“Look, if cricket is actually included in the games, obviously that would be fantastic. However, we have followed up with the organizing committee who were pretty clear,” Curr recently told Emerging Cricket in the aftermath of my article.

“There are 41 other sports they are going to deliver for the Games and cricket is not one of them at this stage. Unless someone tells us any differently, we won’t be making any plans to take our teams to participate in this event.”

The OCA has remained defiant despite Curr’s comments “That (cricket is in Asian Games) is my understanding. It’s an Olympic sport now. I have inquired about it and I am hopeful it will be there in Nagoya,” Randhir Singh, head of OCA, told Cricbuzz.

Conversations remain ongoing between the Asian Cricket Council – still led by powerful India boss Jay Shah until he takes over world cricket in December – and the relevant authorities. A final decision is expected next year.

In better news for the sport, cricket is set to be a late inclusion in the sports programme for next year’s Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, as I reported last month.

ForbesCricket To Be Late Inclusion In 2025 Southeast Asian Games

Cricket appeared set to be excluded from the next SEA Games held in several cities in Thailand, including Bangkok, from December 9-20, 2025.

The biennial multi-sport event started in 1959, and features around a dozen nations, but cricket has only been part of the programme in 2017 and last year in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Cricket’s bid for inclusion has been pushed by the Shah-led ACC.

The past weekend witnessed the final curtain drawn on the boys of summer, just as autumn triggered the commencement of football’s premier competition.

*St George’s and Willow Cuts seize finals silverware*

In cricket St George’s Cricket Club completed the ‘double’, as they captured the Premier Division T20 Knock-Out title, to go along with the earlier won Athene Premier Division 50 Overs league championship.

Captain Onias Bascome spurred the east enders to victory over Cleveland County with an unbeaten knock of 64 runs, as his squad made a successful chase of the established target of 144.
Cleveland had earlier managed 143 in their 20-over allotment, largely on the tails of a Dion Stoverll half-century.

St George’s passed the score having lost just four wickets.

The First Division version of the competition featured Willow Cuts and Flatts, with the result coming down in favour of the former.
Cuts established a mark of 148 for six, as Charles Trott scored 62.

Flatts were then bundled out for just 98, well short of the required runs.
In all cricket’s list of champions also included Warwick Workmen’s Club (First Division 50 overs league champions), St David’s (First Division T20 league champions), Willow Cuts (Western Counties champions), Devonshire Rec., (Central Counties champions), Bailey’s Bay (Eastern Counties and Premier Division T20 league champions), Hamilton Parish Hurricanes (Bermuda Smash Invitational champions) and Somerset Cricket Club (Cup Match champions).

*PHC begin defence of football’s Premier Division title*

PHC made a successful start to their defence of football’s Premier Division, as they defeated Paget 4-2 at Southampton Oval.

The PHC Zebras started their title defence with a 4 – 2 victory over the Paget Lions at the Southampton Oval.

Haile Eve, Jahiem Iris and De-Andre Wainwright each scored first-half goals, allowing the champs a 3 – 0 half-time lead.
This was cut to 3-2 two by the home side, who notched replies through Diaje Hart and Tristen Davis, before Jenico Sealey wrapped up matters in favour of PHC with a tally 15 minutes from time.

Other matches saw Devonshire Cougars draw 1-1 with St George’s Colts, while Dandy Town hammered division newcomers Wolves 4-1.
In First Division league play Robin Hood got the better of BAA 3-0, Boulevard Blazers downed Somerset Eagles 2-1 and St David’s brushed aside Vasco 3-1.

  • The Bay Area Could Host Cricket Matches At Los Angeles Olympics

The Bay Area Could Host Cricket Matches At Los Angeles Olympics

The Bay Area is in the mix to host cricket matches at the Los Angeles Olympics, with power brokers from San Francisco Unicorns scouting a permanent ground that could be used for the 2028 Games.

Cricket will end a 128-year Olympic drought but venues have yet to be determined, with the men’s and women’s competitions possibly extending beyond Los Angeles.

ForbesCricket Readies For Olympic Return At Los Angeles 2028

Dallas, with its former baseball stadium in Grand Prairie becoming the hub of cricket in the U.S, has hosted the bulk of Major League Cricket over its first couple of seasons.

New York has also been bandied around as a potential Olympic site having staged eight T20 World Cup matches at its $30 million modular stadium in Long Island.

The cricket ground was torn down immediately after the tournament, but billionaire Mukesh Ambani, the owner of MI New York, reportedly has plans to build a world-class facility in the famous city.

Seattle, too, is also eying the 2028 Olympics. All six MLC teams hope to eventually have their own stadium as the tournament eyes an expanded home and away format in the coming years.

The Unicorns had earmarked a site in Santa Clara, but are currently widening their search although the ground will most likely be in the Silicon Valley.

“We’re looking at Santa Clara but also a couple of other options as well. I think we’ll have more clarity around that next year,” Unicorns co-owner Anand Rajaraman told me.

A stadium, with initial plans including a crowd capacity of 10,000 and reminiscent of small, quaint grounds in New Zealand, is hoped to be built well before the Los Angeles Olympics.

“That is our hope and ambition, so that we can get it done in time for the LA Olympics,” Rajaraman said. “That’s an internal deadline that we’re working towards. And clearly a lot depends on getting the support of the local government…wherever that is…to get things done in time, to get the permit approvals done.”

The Unicorns are hoping to play home games next season at a temporary ground, with MLC power brokers knowing the tournament must start moving around the country.

“There are half a dozen options that we’re looking at, some of which are already existing minor league cricket grounds and some are other sports (grounds) which we think can be converted for (cricket) in short order,” Rajaraman said.

“We had a fan day before the tournament where at least 1000 people showed up, so there’s clearly growing enthusiasm in the Bay Area.

“But I keep getting asked when are we going to play games in the Bay Area. That’s the next big challenge – how can we figure out how to play home games as soon as possible.”

After a successful launch, where financial expectations were surpassed, the novelty factor wore off in MLC’s second season played in the aftermath of the T20 World Cup co-hosted by the U.S.

“We were dealing with a bit of a saturation of cricket…there was a little bit of fatigue that we were fighting,” Rajaraman said. “That’s why I think having games distributed (around the country) could help avoid that problem.

“Broadcasters will want to see the games played in different locations and New York I think is hoped to host games sooner rather than later.

“The goal is to probably (next season) end up playing in maybe three facilities. I’m hoping the Bay Area will be one of them.”
