2024 in pop culture: In a bruising year, we sought out fantasy, escapism — and cute little animals

NEW YORK — I’ll get you, my pretty! And your little pygmy hippo, too!

Forgive us the shameless attempt to link the fantasy hit “Wicked” to the delightful Moo Deng. But, hear us out — there’s something the two have in common as the year draws to a close. Escapism. Whether we found it on the yellow brick road, or in videos from a Thailand zoo, or perhaps in unlikely Olympic heroes, we gravitated toward fantasy and feel-good pop culture moments this year.

There were new trends, as always. “Brat summer” became a thing, as did “demure, mindful.” And for some inexplicable reason, we became obsessed with celebrity lookalike contests.

There were breakups — Bennifer is, again, a thing of the past — and reunions: Oasis, please try to stay together for the tour. And some things stayed, remarkably, the same: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé kept on breaking records and making history.

So, after a year where much changed but some things held steady, here’s our annual, very selective trip down pop culture memory lane:

It starts as a cheery tweet from a beloved “Sesame Street” figure: “ELMO is just checking in! How is everybody doing?” The answers hint at something deeper and more worrisome. “Not great, Elmo. Not great,” says one milder reply. Doing much better is the viral phenomenon called “BARBENHEIMER,” which makes its awards season debut at the GOLDEN GLOBES. But perhaps the most poignant moment comes from neither film: LILY GLADSTONE, first Indigenous winner of best actress in a drama for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” begins her remarks in the language of her tribe, Blackfeet Nation.

Valentine’s Day — a perfect time to settle into a sweet love saga via TikTok. Only that’s not quite what we get with “Who TF Did I Marry?,” REESA TEESA’s depressing, fascinating, 50-part account of her disastrous marriage with a man who lied about absolutely everything. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a single week that encapsulates peak SWIFT cultural dominance, try this: she begins with the Grammys in Los Angeles (becoming the first artist to win album of the year four times AND announcing a new album), then heads to Tokyo for four tour dates, then jets back just in time for the Super Bowl in Las Vegas — where she shares a passionate smooch with boyfriend TRAVIS KELCE on the field of victory.

“What was I made for?” BILLIE EILISH sings at the OSCARS, channeling BARBIE. And what was KEN made for? Not entirely clear — but it’s clear RYAN GOSLING was made to play him. His singalong version of “I’m Just Ken” is one of the most entertaining Oscar musical moments in years. Still, Christopher Nolan’s “OPPENHEIMER” prevails, a rare case of the top prize going to a blockbuster studio film. Will it happen again in 2025? CYNTHIA ERIVO and ARIANA GRANDE sure hope so; as presenters, they make a sly reference to their upcoming juggernaut, “WICKED.” Speaking of marketing, people are obsessed with that bizarre “DUNE” popcorn bucket. And BEYONCÉ carves her space in country music with “Act II: Cowboy Carter,” which will make her the first Black woman to top the Billboard country chart.

Tennis, anyone? The game’s been around for centuries, but it’s having a cultural moment right now, helped mightily by “CHALLENGERS,” the sweaty romance triangle starring ZENDAYA, MIKE FAIST and JOSH O’CONNOR (40-love? More like 40-sex.) Elsewhere, a new era dawns: At midnight, SWIFT drops “THE TORTURED POET’S DEPARTMENT,” then drops another 15 songs two hours later. The fascinating and disturbing “BABY REINDEER,” the story of a struggling comedian’s extended encounter with a stalker, debuts on Netflix.

It’s MET GALA time — or as it’s known in 2024, another early marketing moment for “WICKED.” ERIVO and GRANDE make fashion waves on the carpet and then musical ones at dinner, with a soulful performance of “When You Believe.” If the “Wicked” tour is in full force, another one stops in its tracks: JENNIFER LOPEZ cancels her summer tour amid reports of both poor ticket sales and trouble in her marriage to BEN AFFLECK. It’s been an eventful year for J.Lo, who’s released an album and movie called “THIS IS ME … NOW” — both reflections on her renewed love with Affleck.

Welcome to BRAT SUMMER! CHARLI XCX releases her hit “Brat” album, with its lime green cover, and launches a thousand memes. Collins Dictionary defines “brat,” its word of the year, as “characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.” At the celeb-heavy SWIFT shows in London, we see PRINCE WILLIAM shaking it off, which is either charming or cringe, you decide. Even better: KELCE dons a top hat and tux and performs for one night. At another stadium across the pond, METS infielder JOSE IGLESIAS delights the crowd with his cheery number “OMG.”

Bonjour, it’s OLYMPICS time! In Paris! An audacious opening ceremony along the Seine is punctuated by a fabulous CELINE DION, perched on the EIFFEL TOWER, singing her heart out — in the rain, too. Controversy swirls over a scene critics feel mocks Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” (organizers say it does not). Olympic stars are born — including French swimming superstar LEON MARCHAND, rugby player ILONA MAHER, and bespectacled “pommel horse guy” gymnast STEPHEN NEDOROSCIK, who nets two bronze medals and comparisons to Clark Kent. Also capturing hearts: yep, MOO DENG, born this month. Her name means “bouncy pork.”

This is them … now: BENNIFER is no more. After two decades, two engagements and two weddings, J.Lo files for divorce. One union dissolves, another returns: OASIS announces a reunion tour. Will they be “DEMURE, MINDFUL”? Everyone seems to want to get in on TikToker JOOLS LEBRON’S act — even the WHITE HOUSE press team. Back at the Olympics, in the new sport of breaking, we meet Australia’s RAYGUN, arguably neither demure nor mindful with her “kangaroo” move. Cute animal alert: It’s DECOY OHTANI’s Major League debut! SHOHEI OHTANI’s perky pooch does a great “first pitch.”

One of the year’s biggest breakout artists, CHAPPELL ROAN, withdraws from a music festival after speaking out about frightening fan interactions. And more on the price of fame: In an excruciating moment, “Bachelorette” JENN TRAN, the franchise’s first Asian American lead, is forced to sit through a painful viewing of her proposal to her chosen suitor, after tearfully explaining how he’d later dumped her over the phone. Tran is keeping busy though — she’s announced as part of the new “Dancing with the Stars” lineup. Also on the list: rugby player Maher, and Pommel Horse Guy! Also, ANNA SOROKIN, dancing with an ankle monitor. Online fandom, meanwhile, is shaken when X is temporarily suspended in Brazil and celebrity stan accounts post tearful farewells, revealing to many across the globe that their favorite accounts are run by Brazilians.

“Dune” Chalamets! “Wonka” Chalamets! Thousands gather in Manhattan for a TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET lookalike contest, and things really get interesting when Chalamet himself shows up. He doesn’t enter the contest, though, and with his mustache, he may not even have won. The trend continues with contests for JEREMY ALLEN WHITE, ZAYN MALIK, and — in a very Washington version — Kennedy scion JACK SCHLOSSBERG, who’s been gathering a following with some interesting social media posts. Turning to basketball, who’s that dancing with USHER? Why it’s ELLIE THE ELEPHANT, the now-viral NEW YORK LIBERTY mascot.

MAYA RUDOLPH does a pretty good KAMALA HARRIS laugh on “Saturday Night Live,” but you know who does it better? HARRIS herself. The Democratic candidate makes a surprise cameo three days before the U.S. presidential election, following in the footsteps of HILLARY CLINTON, SARAH PALIN and others. Elsewhere in television, Bravo announces that “VANDERPUMP RULES,” the Emmy-nominated reality show that has lived through countless scandals, is entirely recasting its 12th season — apart from namesake LISA VANDERPUMP. As for MOO DENG, she doesn’t have her own TV series yet, but our favorite pygmy hippo is generating plenty of merch. And THAT brings us back to ….

“WICKED”! Director JON M. CHU’S emerald-hued fantasy remains very very popular, to quote one of its buzzy show tunes, dancing through life and defying gravity at the multiplex. Moviegoers also come for “GLADIATOR II” and, in a veritable tidal wave, Disney’s “MOANA 2,” which beckons us back to the seas of Oceania. Once again, 2024 seems to be telling us: Give people some whimsy, a place to escape, maybe some catchy tunes — and no one knows how far they’ll go.

Canada’s Olympic drone spying scandal a symptom of an ‘unacceptable culture’ | Canada women’s football team

The drone spying scandal that erupted during Canada’s women’s football team’s 2024 Paris Olympics campaign was a symptom of a “past pattern of an unacceptable culture”, Canada Soccer has said after an independent review.

The Canadian women’s camp made global headlines after a drone was allegedly used to spy on a training session of one of their opponents, New Zealand. The head coach, Bev Priestman, was subsequently banned by Fifa for a year, while analyst Joseph Lombardi and the assistant coach Jasmine Mander were also banned following the allegations, and Priestman was removed from her role.

On Friday, the sport’s governing body in Canada, Canada Soccer, said it had received the report of an independent reviewer “hired by the organisation’s board of directors to investigate the illegal use of drones at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games”, and the organisation’s senior officials provided their initial reactions while promising a more extensive response in the coming days.

Kevin Blue, the chief executive and general secretary of Canada Soccer, said: “Our initial review of the conclusions of the independent investigator reveals that the drone incident in Paris was a symptom of a past pattern of an unacceptable culture and insufficient oversight within the national teams.

“While we are being thoughtful about how best to address the findings, we also want to move decisively. To that end, we will release key conclusions and next steps within a week.”

Friday’s statement added that lawyer Sonia Regenbogen, of Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark, LLP, had conducted the independent investigation and had considered evidence from a wide range of people, including coaches, administrative staff, former employees, and Canada Soccer’s CEO and board chair.

Despite being deducted six points during the group stage of the Olympic tournament in the wake of the scandal, Canada progressed to the quarter-finals with three victories on the pitch, before being eliminated by Germany on penalties.

Rhule and Nebraska football committed to culture ahead of second half of season | Sports

Nebraska enters a bye week already matching last season’s win total. At 5-1, the Huskers are on the cusp of their first bowl bid since 2016. However, head coach Matt Rhule isn’t ready to celebrate just yet.

Rhule spoke to the media on Monday at the halfway point of Nebraska’s season. While it hasn’t been perfect, he is thrilled with how the team has handled it all.

“I’m proud of our players,” Rhule said. “That’s the important message. I’m proud of their work. I’m proud of the lack of distractions. I’m proud of the selflessness. I’m proud of the growth.”

The team has shared this same commitment, even with some seeing the field less than others. While players deciding to redshirt after four games to improve their stock in the transfer portal is a hot topic in college football, Rhule hasn’t had to deal with any situations.

“I believe in that journey, I believe in the old school process,” Rhule said. “It takes parents who trust you, takes players who trust you, and at the same time if a player says to me ‘Coach, this isn’t right for me I want to transfer.’ I’m not gonna throw them off the team.”

Rhule believes in development and not wasting a year of eligibility by playing just a few snaps a game with defensive lineman Riley Van Poppel is a catalyst for this thinking. The sophomore saw his most extensive playing time of the year against the Scarlet Knights, but can only appear in one more regular season contest to preserve his redshirt.

Van Poppel follows suit to defensive lineman James Williams, who redshirted last season despite recording two sacks in four games. The sophomore has already doubled his production in just the past two weeks alone.

“James Williams is out there, has a big game statistically,” Rhule said. “We made the decision, a hard decision, but the right decision last year to redshirt him down the stretch and now you see a much more developed player in my mind.”

Others up for a redshirt are defensive backs Blye Hill, Amare Sanders and Larry Tarver Jr. Hill looked to be in the running for the starting spot at cornerback in the spring before an injury in the spring game kept him sidelined. With the likes of junior Ceyair Wright and redshirt freshman Jeremiah Charles stepping up, Hill gets more time to evolve.

The Huskers who are seeing the field are playing clean football with the Blackshirts forcing turnovers on one end and the offense keeping the ball out of harm’s way on the other. One of the biggest improvements from last year is Nebraska’s plus-six turnover margin, up from a minus-17 mark in 2023.

“It’s a good example of putting your mind to something and getting it done,” Rhule said. “It’s been months and months of work and it’s also something we were working on last year.”

As for the other two key areas of physicality and discipline, Rhule calls it “a work in progress.” He points out the Illinois game being an occasion where the Huskers lost the toughness battle by being too worried about winning.

Penalties haven’t cost the Huskers too much so far, but that is because their opponents are generating them at the same rate. Through six games, Nebraska has committed 47 total penalties with the other sideline also having 47.

“It’s not like we’re just getting destroyed like we have 11 [penalties] and they have three, but that’s something I’d like to see us approve,” Rhule said.

The Huskers enter their first bye week of the season at a win total fans are used to seeing in November. While Rhule still has nightmares of the overtime loss to the Fighting Illini, he remains focused on getting better every week.

And so is his team. Morale is at an all-time high as Nebraska is bought in on having a successful second half of the year.

“After Illinois, I could just feel our team and our coaching staff wanting to win this game,” Rhule said. “I enjoy this game better where the guys just go and play.”

Even their beans are roasted over Binchotan for an added smokiness. The quirky cafe is filled with the owner’s memorabilia, there’s even a drum set, but no picture-taking here.

With limited seating, it’s ideal for a quick cuppa on the go.

World Nomad Games put the spotlight on the sport of the Great Steppe | Arts and Culture News

Astana, Kazakhstan – Clouds of dust rise from the sandy ground of a playing field as a dozen horses converge, their riders standing in their stirrups as they direct their mounts towards an odd target: the headless and disembowelled carcass of a goat laying in the dust.

From what appears as a multi-legged, rotating creature of hooves, tails, heads and human fists, one rider manages to lift and hoist the carcass beneath his leg, dashing towards the goal with two teams of seven horsemen chasing him from all sides – some to protect him, others to thwart him, whatever the cost. The risk of broken fingers and jaws is all too real.

This is not a movie but a game of kokpar, a horseback sport known and played across Central Asia, and a thrilling climax to this year’s edition of the Fifth World Nomad Games that concluded on September 13.

Held in the futuristic Kazakh capital of Astana, the fifth edition of the World Nomad Games is a celebration of the sport, culture and unity of the nomadic peoples of Asia’s Turkic nations.

The bi-annual event started 10 years ago in Cholpon Ata in Kyrgyzstan, with 30 countries participating, after former Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev suggested the games would be a good way to showcase the region’s culture in an era of fast-paced globalisation.

“We are the descendants of wise and brave nomads who were able to preserve their unique identity and gave us the civilisation of the Great Steppe,” Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at the grand opening of the games on September 8. “Our common duty is to cherish this sacred heritage and to pass it on to future generations.”

Tokayev also addressed the suffering in other parts of the world, especially in Gaza, while emphasising the games’ role in strengthening friendships among nations, much in the same way as the recently concluded Olympics.

In the same way that France used the Olympics to showcase Paris and French culture to the world, so Kazakhstan used its first time hosting the World Nomad Games to showcase the origins of the Kazakh steppes, symbolising the peaceful interconnections of past nomadic empires beneath a traditional nomadic yurt.

‘Three games of men’

This year’s event, the first held in Kazakhstan, was possibly the largest to date, featuring more than 2,000 athletes from 89 countries ranging from Angola to Argentina, Hungary to Sweden, and Turkmenistan to Zimbabwe.

They all came together to participate in 21 traditional games that have their roots in the “three games of men” (archery, wrestling and horse racing), which testify to the skills of the peoples who ruled the steppes of inner Asia for thousands of years, from Silk Road traders to the Golden Horde that preceded the 15th century Kazakh Khanate.

Besides kokpar, some of the most interesting games were audaryspak, a horseback wrestling competition where a sportsman must wrestle his opponent from his horse, and kusbegilik, a hunting game with birds of prey (majestic golden eagles, falcons and hawks) whose flight speed is assessed by launching them on a lure or counting how long it takes the bird to reach a bait in its owner’s hand.

There were also several different styles of wrestling, such as the local Qazak Quresi and Kurash, entirely performed in standing position, as well as the Powerful Nomad Strongman Competition, which included weight lifting, javelin throwing challenges and pulling a 200kg (440-pound) bullock cart by naked hand and muscle.

The games also went beyond sport to include strategy such as Togyzkumalak, a board game in which a player wins by collecting the highest number of stones, and live performances of aitys, Kazakh and Kyrgyz folk-orientated improvised music and poetry duels which became part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2015.

Kazakhstan won the games with a total of 112 medals, including 43 golds, followed by Kyrgyzstan with 65 medals and Russia with 49, but there were plenty of surprises.

Betty Vuk, an Italian female judo fighter and member of Italy’s Qazak Quresi Foundation, secured Italy’s only gold medal, and first in the Nomad Games, in traditional Kazakh wrestling.

Other winning nations included Hungary – which won eight medals, including one gold, surpassing Turkey, India, China and Turkmenistan – and Romania, Poland, Moldova, France and Australia, underlining the growing appeal of traditional Central Asian games and martial arts around the world.

While the 2026 edition will return to Kyrgyzstan, future games could take place far beyond the steppe.

“Maybe in 2030 or 2032, it’ll be possible to host the World Nomad Games in North America because we have common ground there. […] Our geography should expand and become a world project with wider attention,” Kazakhstan’s vice-minister of Tourism and Sports, Zharasbayev Serik Maratovich told the media. “We want to popularise our games and ask anyone to help spread the word.”

Back on the kokpar field, the goat was made of rubber, but a dead animal is the norm in a sport that has slightly different rules and names depending on where it is played.

It was Kazakhstan that emerged as the eventual winners of the kokpar tournament, taking home the gold ahead of Kyrgyzstan.

Kritarth Mittal, a Mumbai-based entrepreneur and visionary founder of Soshals, has taken to social media to unveil the stark, often concealed costs of relentless ‘hustle culture’. Hustle culture glorifies relentless work, often at the expense of mental well-being. The constant pressure to be productive can lead to burnout, anxiety, and depression.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mittal, a luminary in the tech sector, shared a haunting image from his hospital bed, delivering a stark cautionary message about the perils of an imbalanced work regime.

Mittal blamed poor lifestyle choices for a health scare that led to his hospitalisation. He also cautioned against ‘hustle culture’ and said he ended up in the hospital after pulling all-nighters, getting less than five hours of sleep a day and following an unhealthy diet.

“Hustle culture comes with a cost — some you incur right away and some over decades. Choice is yours, I’m just here to show you the ugly side of it so you don’t get swayed easy. This is me after pulling all-nighters, sleeping for less than 5-6 hours, and no diet plan,” Mittal tweeted.

The seasoned entrepreneur, whose meteoric rise in the tech industry is the stuff of legend, confessed that his rigorous schedule, a fixture since his college days, has finally exacted its toll. “TBH (to be honest) my routine has been like that since my college days but now my body has started to remind me that I am not 20 anymore,” he admitted in a subsequent post.

A proud alumnus of SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai, Mittal revealed his struggle to embrace healthier habits despite numerous attempts.

“I have a diet plan and I’ve tried to set up a sleep cycle, I just am ridiculously bad at following a routine. When I’m working, I lose track of time and then everything after that gets disrupted in order,” he lamented.

Mittal’s message was clear – a warning to others about the toll that an unbalanced lifestyle can take on one’s health.

Mittal’s battle with persistent body pain and dark circles underscores the severe repercussions of his unrelenting lifestyle. Vowing to shift his focus to self-care, he has committed to prioritizing his health moving forward.

Mittal’s story has resonated deeply with many, with a stark reminder that while “hustle culture” may glorify constant productivity and sleepless nights, it often comes at the expense of one’s health, and of course the need for a work-life balance!

Using a dead Kobe Bryant as a symbol of LA sports culture is very late-stage capitalism

The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled out all the stops for their Shohei Ohtani pitch. That included bringing back Kobe Bryant from the dead.

According to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the late Lakers Hall of Famer made a key video appearance during the Dodgers’ presentation to Ohtani, telling the Angels dual-threat star that “there’s no better place in the world to win than Los Angeles, and there’s no better team in baseball to win with than the Dodgers.”

Bryant recorded the video as a favor to the team back in 2017, when the Dodgers were preparing a recruitment plan for the then-Nippon Professional Baseball transfer.

“That was one of the highlights of the whole meeting,” Ohtani told ESPN through his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. “I was really surprised to see it. It was a strong and touching message.”

This isn’t, I don’t know, macabre to anyone else? Kobe Bryant has left a complicated legacy behind since his death in a January 2020 helicopter crash. It seems the five-time NBA Champion is only remembered in flowery memories and rose-tinted anecdotes: Loving father, wise mentor, the ultimate competitor; those are the only ways you can describe Bryant. But we know that’s not the case.

This pitch just took things to another level. Whatever humanity and identity Bryant had left posthumously has been stripped from him. He has just become this simulacrum for Los Angeles sports culture and marketing. If the Dodgers hadn’t already recorded this six years ago, it feels like the kind of video that would have been made with AI.

Hell, it was weird when Bryant recorded it in 2017. It’s always odd when athletes from other sports get involved in the star recruitment. The year before the Dodgers had Bryant record that video, Tom Brady got involved in the Boston Celtics’ recruitment of Kevin Durant. Brady’s involvement in the pitch is actually what swayed Durant to eventually join the Golden State Warriors. A shared city does not dictate culture. Involving other players is just an advertising tactic distracting from the team-specific details that really matter.

Bryant’s video obviously wasn’t the only factor in Ohtani’s decision to sign with the Dodgers. No other team in baseball could offer him the record-setting $700 million contract. Los Angeles’ roster does offer Ohtani the best chance to win a ring by virtue of pure talent. Just let Bryant rest.
