    A possible TikTok ban is just days away. A list of other apps available

    With a possible TikTok ban just days away, many U.S. users are looking for alternative social media platforms to help them keep up with pop culture or provide the type of entertaining videos that popularized the short-form video app.

    TikTok, which has been a cultural phenomenon, could be banned on Jan. 19 under a law that forces the platform to cut ties with its China-based parent company, ByteDance, or shut down its U.S. operation.

    The fate of social media platform will be decided by the Supreme Court, which last week heard oral arguments in a legal challenge to the statute and seemed likely to uphold the law. The court could rule on the case as soon as this week. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump has asked the justices to put the law on hold so he can negotiate a “political resolution” to the issue after he takes office.

    TikTok has more than 170 million users in the U.S., and if it does get banned, it’s not clear which competitors will benefit the most. Some experts think established social media platforms, such as Instagram and YouTube, could see the biggest influx of users. But some users are looking for something different and could turn to other apps.

    Here are the different alternatives and what to know about them:

    Recently, some U.S. TikTok users have flocked to the Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu in protest of the looming ban. Like TikTok, Xiaohongshu, which in English means “Little Red Book,” combines e-commerce and short-form videos.

    The app has gained traction in China and other regions with a Chinese diaspora — such as Malaysia and Taiwan — racking up 300 million monthly active users, a majority of whom are young women who use it as a de-facto search engine for product, travel and restaurant recommendations, as well as makeup and skincare tutorials.

    On Tuesday, the Xiaohongshu, called “RedNote” by American users and on some app stores, was the top downloaded free app in Apple’s U.S. app store.

    Lemon8, also owned by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, is a lesser-known lifestyle app that allows users to post pictures and short-form videos. Though the platform lets users post TikTok-like videos, it leans more into pictures and has been described as a mixture of Instagram and Pinterest.

    In the past few weeks, many creators have hailed Lemon8 as the place to go if TikTok is banned under federal law. Some have also recommended it through paid sponsored posts tagged #lemon8partner, indicating a recent corporate push to generate more users.

    But the law that targets TikTok also states the divest-or-ban requirement for ByteDance applies generally to apps that are owned or operated by the two companies or any of their subsidiaries. That means even though Lemon8 is not explicitly named in the statute, its future in the U.S. is also in jeopardy.

    Instagram launched Reels in 2020, a TikTok-like feed of short videos users can create or scroll through. The feature has proven to be massively popular and some experts say creators are likely to set up shop there if a TikTok ban does happen. As of 2022, Instagram had 2 billion active monthly users. Meta no longer discloses user numbers for its individual platforms.

    But could it replace TikTok? That depends. While many creators currently post on both platforms, some experts say the youngest users are unlikely to migrate to a service made popular by their millennial parents. And while Meta’s algorithm is addictive, it’s still not TikTok.

    In the past, some TikTok users have also blamed the surge of scrutiny on the platform on Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, pointing to a Washington Post report from 2022 that said the tech behemoth paid a Republican consulting firm to undermine TikTok through a nationwide media and lobbying campaign.

    Though TikTok dominates headlines as a driver of internet trends, Pew Research Center says YouTube is actually the most widely-used platform among teens and adults.

    YouTube users can scroll through Shorts just as they can on TikTok or Reels on Instagram and Facebook, allowing them to watch hours of bite-sized videos. Many of the videos featured on YouTube are from TikTok or creators who post to several platforms. That said, YouTube is still known for its longer-format videos so it may not have the variety of content that TikTok users are looking for — at least not yet.

    Snapchat, launched in 2011 with its infamous disappearing videos, remains popular among teens and younger adults. The platform gained so much traction that Meta designed a similar feature in Facebook and Instagram called “Stories” that lets users post photos or videos that disappear within 24 hours. In 2020, Snapchat launched another feature that lets users “shine a light on the most entertaining Snaps, no matter who created them.”

    The platform is estimated to have roughly 692 million global monthly active users last year, according to eMarketer.

    For TikTok users who enjoy the “TikTok Live” feed that features livestreamed videos, Twitch could be a good alternative. The Amazon-owned platform is a leader in the streaming industry and allows users on the platform to watch some of the internet’s most popular streamers, such as Kai Cenat. Twitch says it has 105 million monthly visitors.

    Clapper, a TikTok clone, has also been gaining some traction amid the looming ban. The app was launched in 2020 by Dallas-based entrepreneur Edison Chen, and focuses on Gen X and millennial users. In September of that year, the company described itself in a Facebook post as a “free speech” platform that did not “censor posts and comments.” But in blog post on its website from 2021, the company wrote it “stopped being a ‘Free Speech’ platform” in September 2020 and “changed its mission and goals” to focus on “community”.

    For TikTok users who want to get away from the overcrowded spots, there are lesser-known apps like Triller, which is popular for music videos, and Zigazoo, which was designed with kids in mind.

    If none of these apps tickle your fancy, it’s also possible that other platforms could emerge in the next few months as companies attempt to attract users looking for a new place to go.

    Climate change added 41 days of dangerous heat around world in 2024

    People around the world suffered an average of 41 extra days of dangerous heat this year because of human-caused climate change, according to a group of scientists who also said that climate change worsened much of the world’s damaging weather throughout 2024.

    The analysis from World Weather Attribution and Climate Central researchers comes at the end of a year that shattered climate record after climate record as heat across the globe made 2024 likely to be its hottest ever measured and a slew of other fatal weather events spared few.

    “The finding is devastating but utterly unsurprising: Climate change did play a role, and often a major role in most of the events we studied, making heat, droughts, tropical cyclones and heavy rainfall more likely and more intense across the world, destroying lives and livelihoods of millions and often uncounted numbers of people,” Friederike Otto, the lead of World Weather Attribution and an Imperial College climate scientist, said during a media briefing on the scientists’ findings. “As long as the world keeps burning fossil fuels, this will only get worse.”

    Millions of people endured stifling heat this year. Northern California and Death Valley baked. Sizzling daytime temperatures scorched Mexico and Central America. Heat endangered already vulnerable children in West Africa. Skyrocketing southern European temperatures forced Greece to close the Acropolis. In South and Southeast Asian countries, heat forced school closures. Earth experienced some of the hottest days ever measured and its hottest-yet summer, with a 13-month heat streak that just barely broke.

    To do its heat analysis, the team of volunteer international scientists compared daily temperatures around the globe in 2024 to the temperatures that would have been expected in a world without climate change. The results are not yet peer-reviewed, but researchers use peer-reviewed methods.

    Some areas saw 150 days or more of extreme heat due to climate change.

    “The poorest, least developed countries on the planet are the places that are experiencing even higher numbers,” said Kristina Dahl, vice president of climate science at Climate Central.

    What’s worse, heat-related deaths are often underreported.

    “People don’t have to die in heat waves. But if we can’t communicate convincingly, ‘but actually a lot of people are dying,’ it’s much harder to raise this awareness,” Otto said. “Heat waves are by far the deadliest extreme event, and they are the extreme events where climate change is a real game changer.”

    This year was a warning that the planet is getting dangerously close to the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warming limit compared to the pre-industrial average, according to the scientists. Earth is expected to soon edge past that threshold, although it’s not considered to have been breached until that warming is sustained over decades.

    The researchers closely examined 29 extreme weather events this year that killed at least 3,700 people and displaced millions, and found that 26 of them had clear links to climate change.

    The El Niño weather pattern, which naturally warms the Pacific Ocean and changes weather around the world, made some of this weather more likely earlier in the year. But the researchers said most of their studies found that climate change played a bigger role than that phenomenon in fueling 2024’s events. Warm ocean waters and warmer air fueled more destructive storms, according to the researchers, while temperatures led to many record-breaking downpours.

    Jennifer Francis, a climate scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Cape Cod who wasn’t involved in the research, said the science and findings were sound.

    “Extreme weather will continue to become more frequent, intense, destructive, costly, and deadly, until we can lower the concentration of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere,” she said.

    Significantly more climate extremes could be expected without action, the United Nations Environment Programme said in the fall, as more planet-warming carbon dioxide has been sent into the air this year by burning fossil fuels than last year.

    But the deaths and damages from extreme weather events aren’t inevitable, said Julie Arrighi, director of programmes at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and part of the research.

    “Countries can reduce those impacts by preparing for climate change and adapting for climate change, and while the challenges faced by individual countries or systems or places vary around the world, we do see that every country has a role to play,” she said.

    Study Says Flu Virus Remains In Refrigerated Raw Milk For Up To 5 Days

    According to a new study, raw milk, which is marketed as a natural and healthful alternative to pasteurised dairy, may contain hidden hazards. The research found that the influenza or flu virus can remain infectious in refrigerated raw milk for up to five days. The findings come at a time when outbreaks of bird flu in dairy cattle have raised concerns about the potential for a new pandemic. The study was conducted by Stanford University.

    “This work highlights the potential risk of avian influenza transmission through consumption of raw milk and the importance of milk pasteurization,” said study senior author Alexandria Boehm, the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Professor of Environmental Studies in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and the Stanford School of Engineering.

    More than 14 million Americans consume raw milk annually. Unlike pasteurized milk, raw milk is not heated to kill potentially harmful pathogens. Proponents of raw milk claim that it leaves more beneficial nutrients, enzymes, and probiotics than in pasteurized milk, and can boost immune and gastrointestinal health.

    The Food and Drug Administration has tied raw milk to over 200 outbreaks of illnesses, and – together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – warns that germs, such E. coli and Salmonella, in raw milk present “serious” health risks, especially for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

    The researchers explored the persistence of a strain of human influenza virus in raw cow’s milk at typical refrigeration temperatures. The flu virus, called H1N1 PR8, survived and remained infectious in the milk for up to five days.

    “The persistence of infectious influenza virus in raw milk for days raises concerns about potential transmission pathways,” said study co-lead author Mengyang Zhang, a postdoctoral scholar in civil and environmental engineering. “The virus could contaminate surfaces and other environmental materials within dairy facilities, posing risks to animals and humans.”

    Additionally, the researchers found that flu virus RNA – molecules that carry genetic information but are not considered a health risk – remained detectable in the raw milk for at least 57 days. By comparison, pasteurization completely destroyed infectious influenza in the milk and reduced the amount of viral RNA by almost 90%, but didn’t eliminate the RNA entirely. Although exposure to influenza virus RNA does not pose a health risk, RNA-based testing methods are often used to conduct environmental surveillance of pathogens like influenza.

    “The prolonged persistence of viral RNA in both raw and pasteurized milk has implications for food safety assessments and environmental surveillance, particularly because many of the techniques used in environmental surveillance detect RNA,” said study co-lead author Alessandro Zulli, a postdoctoral scholar in civil and environmental engineering.

    The research grew out of an earlier project – funded by the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment’s Environmental Venture Projects program – focused on human norovirus and the subfamily of viruses responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic.

    In the U.S. alone, flu viruses infect more than 40 million people and kill more than 50,000 every year. These types of viruses can spread from animals to humans, as in the case of swine flu, which led to as many as 1.4 billion human infections globally in 2009-2010.

    Although bird flu has not proven as dangerous to people yet, it could mutate to become so. Recent detection of bird flu in cattle has raised questions about its potential transmission through milk and other dairy products.

    The study’s findings underscore the importance of improving monitoring systems, particularly as bird flu continues to spread among livestock, according to the study’s authors.

    The study complements earlier research involving several of the same researchers that pioneered the use of wastewater for detection of avian influenza. That analysis revealed commercial and industrial dairy waste as primary sources. By analyzing wastewater, public health officials could detect virus activity in nearby cattle populations.

    “We never thought that wastewater could be used to detect and respond to zoonotic pathogens circulating in the community,” Boehm said. “It has been amazing to watch our work on detection in wastewater scaled across the United States and the world.”

    A “beloved and talented hockey player” died days after being hit by a stray bullet on Interstate 55 in Missouri.

    Colin Brown, a teenage hockey player, was struck by a stray bullet on Interstate 55 in St. Louis as he was on his way home from a game with his family around 10:30 p.m. last Saturday, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release.

    After he was shot, his father immediately alerted authorities and continued to drive till they were met by police and EMS, who transported the 16-year-old to a hospital “in critical condition.”

    Brown remained in critical condition at the hospital for a few days before he died Wednesday morning, police said.

    Colin Brown, a 16-year-old hockey player, died on Wednesday after was struck by a stray bullet on Interstate 55 in St. Louis Saturday night.

    “It is with a heavy heart – I share with you that 16-year-old Colin Brown has died after being shot by a stray bullet Saturday night on I-55,” St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Mitch McCoy said in a statement. “Colin’s family has asked that I relay their deep appreciation to law enforcement, the hockey community and those who loved Colin.”

    “They are asking for privacy at this time,” he added.

    Player donated organs

    McCoy, in his statement, also shared that Brown donated his organs to “other patients in desperate need.”

    “Colin passed away but not before giving the ultimate gift of life,” McCoy said. “Earlier today, Colin’s organs were donated to other patients in desperate need.”

    Friends, family and staff members lined the hallways of the hospital as Brown, who aspired to be a doctor, was taken to become an organ donor, FOX2Now reported. Brown’s father told the media outlet his son’s donation saved four lives.

    Colin Brown was a student at Christian Brothers College, a high school in St. Louis where he was a valuable member of the CBC Varsity Hockey team.

    Polling opened two weeks ago to football fans across the world. They have until December 10 to have their say and the winners will be determined by a combination of fan votes and the Globe Soccer Jury, made up of legendary names such as Marcello Lippi, Francesco Totti, Iker Casillas and Luis Figo.

    Last year, some 70 million people from more than 225 countries and territories cast their vote.

    But this figure has already been matched just halfway into the ballot period this time round as fans look to have their say on the players of the year from both the men and women’s games.

    Salah’s future at Liverpool might be uncertain but his importance to Arne Slot’s side is not, as the winger’s goals helped the Reds come back from 2-1 down against Southampton on the weekend to secure three points and surge eight points clear at the top of the league.

    A 16-year-old Missouri high school hockey player died Wednesday days after a stray bullet struck him on a busy highway while he was driving home from his game with his father.

    Colin Brown, a sophomore at Christian Brothers College High School (CBCHS), was sitting in the passenger seat of his father Calvin’s car when he was shot around 10:30 p.m. on Interstate 55 in South St. Louis Saturday night, according to First Alert 4.

    Brown was rushed to the hospital in critical condition before he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday afternoon. 

    “Colin — a beloved and talented hockey player — passed away but not before giving the ultimate gift of life,” St. Louis Metro Police Department Director of Public Affairs Mitch McCoy said. “Colin’s organs were donated to other patients who were in desperate need. This donation is an example of the type of young man Colin was and the kind of family he grew up in.”

    Brown joined CBCHS, one of Missouri’s most elite hockey high school programs, after transferring from Illinois in the fall. He was seven games into the season with his new school.

    “He was a talented and dedicated student who was enrolled in Honors courses, and he was a valuable member of our CBC Varsity Hockey team,” CBCHS said in a statement.

    McCoy said police received numerous reports from motorists and nearby residents over the gunfire. 

    Police believe there was a rolling gunfight as the Browns traveled in the opposite direction, according to Fox 2.

    Detectives are reviewing newly acquired footage from the area as they hunt for the suspected shooter. 

    “This type of violence is not going to be tolerated by us,” McCoy said. “We want people to feel safe driving on the interstate and the city of St. Louis. 

    “To have a 16-year-old boy who just left a hockey game get shot is incredibly rare. You don’t hear about cases of innocent bystanders being hit by stray bullets here. When those acts of violence occur, we will put the entire weight of this police department into finding who did it to make sure they are held accountable.”

    The NHL’s St. Louis Blues coaching staff wore “72 Strong” pins honoring Brown’s uniform number and left a hockey stick outside their locker room before their game Wednesday night.

    Calvin Brown expressed his gratitude to the St. Louis Police and Illinois State Police for “their continued efforts in apprehending the perpetrator(s) of this senseless crime against our beloved son, Colin” but said that St. Louis officials should make “greater efforts” to support police.

    “As a family and as a former law enforcement official with over 28 years of experience, we believe that greater efforts are needed in the City of St. Louis and the surrounding region to support the police and equip them with the necessary tools to combat such senseless, violent gun crimes,” Brown said on Sunday.

    The city of St. Louis saw 106 homicides through August 2024, a slight decrease from the previous year (109), according to officials.

    Officials boasted about the nearly 40 percent decrease in homicides since St. Louis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones took office in April 2021.

    “The death of Colin Brown is devastating news for our whole community,” Jones said. “We were all praying for a miracle and are now overwhelmed with grief, sadness, and anger that this innocent teenager’s life has been taken. As the mother of a teenage son, I grieve with all who knew and loved this man.”

    Rafael Nadal has taken to his passion for golf. The 38-year-old took to the golf course and participated in the FGB Hexagonal Q-Romia Circuit at Club de Golf Son Servera on Saturday. What’s more?

    Well, he succeeded in finishing at the eighth position with a score of 76 strokes, four over par, as reported by Spanish website Ultima Hora. Nadal’s birdies on the par-5 ninth and sixteenth holes, and on the par-3 third hole, highlighted his round. At one stage, he was, in fact, on the first spot, but couldn’t maintain the lead. But earning eighth place, among close to 80 players, in the Handicap category, is still commendable to say the least, isn’t it?

    While he and his team gave their best, the ultimate winner of the competition was the team of Terraza Balear Part of Gunni Trentino. On second position was Engel&Volkers Commercial, followed by God save The Par. Nadal’s The Rafael Nadal Academy took the fourth spot, while Ejusan Ecologic B rounded out the top five.

    For those unaware, Nadal’s passion for golf is not new. The tennis icon, a keen golfer, has participated in the Balearic Mid-Amateur Golf Championship three times in the last four years. This year in February, Nadal outperformed the field, finishing three over par for a two-round total of 147 strokes. His seven-stroke victory over Jaime Nicolau Olmos secured him the men’s title.

    In fact, he’s expressed his liking for the sport on numerous occasions in the past.

    When Rafael Nadal revealed his brewing passion for golf

    Back in 2012, speaking to Miami Herald, the 14-time Roland Garros champion had expressed his inner thoughts on golf. While unleashing his love for the sport, he said, “I love the game of golf in general,” he said. Continuing further, he added, “Golf is great, because you are always in beautiful places when you are playing, and the risk for injury, as you know, is very small.”

    Moreover, his craze for the sport even attracted golf legend Tiger Woods, who became a fan of him! Back in 2019, during the R16 at the US Open, Woods was spotted watching Rafael Nadal. Later in that event, Nadal emerged victorious at the Flushing Meadows and lifted the trophy after defeating Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller. After winning the final, Rafa extended his gratitude towards Woods.

    “It’s a huge honour to play in front of all of [New York fans] but to play in front of Tiger is a very special thing. I’ve always said that I don’t have idols, but if I did I would have to say that one idol is him. I always try to follow him, every single shot through the whole year,” he said. “He’s a big legend of sport, one of the greatest sportsmen of all time. I want to congratulate him for one of the most amazing comebacks of the sport ever when he won The Masters this year”, he concluded while praising Woods’ golf supremacy.

    Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been spotted back in a football stadium for the first time since his sacking earlier this week. 

    The Dutchman’s reign as United boss ended on Monday morning following their controversial 2-1 defeat by West Ham. 

    Ten Hag’s two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford yielded FA Cup and Carabao Cup honours but his side underperformed in the league, especially in his final full season, which ended with club finishing eighth – their lowest-ever position in the Premier League. 

    Ten Hag swiftly jetted back home to the Netherlands following his dismissal and he has now been spotted attending a match in the Dutch Eredivisie between Heracles Almelo and NAC Breda.

    The 54-year-old was on hand to witness the home side claim a 2-0 win thanks to a brace from Brian De Keersmaecker at the Erve Asito stadium.

    His sighting comes just a day after the former Ajax manager drew a line under his time as United boss by penning a heartfelt message to supporters. In it, he thanked his backroom staff, and insisted he wishes the club nothing but success going forward.
