George Baldock’s family reveal football star’s cause of death

George Baldock, the Greece international soccer player who was found dead at his home in Athens on Wednesday, drowned while swimming in his pool, his family said.

Greek police said this week there was no initial indication the death of the 31-year-old former Premier League player was suspicious.

“We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George. We can confirm that a post-mortem examination has found that George tragically drowned whilst swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens,” Baldock’s family said in a statement issued to The Associated Press.

The family said the Panathinaikos defender, who was born in Britain, had been due to return to the U.K. to celebrate his baby son’s first birthday.

“George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person.

“Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands,” the family said.

“We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son.”

Baldock was of Greek heritage and played 12 matches for the national team.

He joined Sheffield United in 2017 and helped the club earn promotion to the Premier League twice, in 2019 and 2023. He joined Panathinaikos in May, on a three-year contract, after Sheffield United was relegated to England’s second division.

“As a family it has been incredibly touching, but equally so very difficult to read the huge number of tributes written by those that knew George and from those whose life he touched. It was impossible not to love him,” his family said. “We ask that you please continue to respect our privacy at this devastating time as we begin to process our grief.”

There was a period of silence in tribute to the right back ahead of Thursday’s game in the Nations League between England and Greece at Wembley Stadium. Greece won 2-1.

  • After the death of Johnny Gaudreau, the Blue Jackets look for better days and better hockey

After the death of Johnny Gaudreau, the Blue Jackets look for better days and better hockey

    Columbus Blue Jackets

Last season: 25-48-9, last in the Metropolitan Division.

COACH: Dean Evason (147-77-27 in four-plus seasons with the Minnesota Wild), hired July 23.

SEASON OPENER: Oct. 15 at Florida.

DEPARTURES: F Alexandre Texier, F Patrik Laine, F Alexander Nylander, D Adam Clendening, coach Pascal Vincent.

ADDITIONS: F James van Riemsdyk, F Sean Monahan, D Jordan Harris, D Jack Johnson.

    GOALIES: Elvis Merzlikins (13-17-8, 3.45 goals-against average, 0.897 save percentage) and Daniil Tarasov (8-11-3, 3.18, 0.908).

    BetMGM STANLEY CUP ODDS: 300-1.

    What to expect

The Blue jackets have missed the playoffs for the last four seasons. Now they have to find their way with a new general manager and a new coach while dealing with the grief of losing their star player, Johnny Gaudreau, in a tragic accident. Columbus has a core of veterans, including captain Boone Jenner, forwards Sean Kuraly and Kirill Marchenko, defenseman Zach Werenski and goalie Elvis Merzlikins, and a lot of younger players who have flashed game-changing talent. Newly acquired forwards James van Riemsdyk and Sean Monahan should provide some veteran leadership and scoring.

    Strengths and weaknesses

The good: Columbus has some depth at center, signing Monahan to a five-year contract. Adam Fantilli will be back. He was having a great rookie year until he suffered a calf laceration from a skate in January. Cole Sillinger had a career-high 32 points in 77 games last season. Kent Johnson is returning from a shoulder injury the ended his season in February. The previous season, he was fifth among NHL rookies with 40 points in 79 games.

The not-so-good: The loss of Gaudreau will be tough for the Blue Jackets to get past, not only on the ice but in the locker room where his No. 13 jersey will hang this season. His 134 points in two seasons with Columbus won’t be easily replaced. One of the Blue Jackets’ best forwards, Patrik Laine, asked to be traded, and the organization complied. The defense last year was a problem. Columbus was the second worst in the league in goals allowed (3.63 per game). Their 76.3% penalty-kill rate was 26th.

    Players to watch

Monahan wanted to come to Columbus to play alongside his best friend Gaudreau. The 29-year-old veteran, if his head is in the right place, could help carry this team forward as the top-line anchor. He signed a five-year, $27.5 million deal with the Blue Jackets in July. Fantilli looked great in his rookie year and could be ready to take a step forward with more responsibility. After a couple of sub-par seasons interrupted by injuries, Merzlikins hopes to establish himself as the undisputed No. 1 goalie again.

  • ‘If things don’t change, there will be another Madeleine’: A year on from her tragic suicide death, Maddy Cusack’s tearful family call for a fix for ‘broken’ women’s football

‘If things don’t change, there will be another Madeleine’: A year on from her tragic suicide death, Maddy Cusack’s tearful family call for a fix for ‘broken’ women’s football

The Cusack family have spent the last 12 months learning to live a life completely different to how they could ever have imagined.

Their eldest daughter Madeleine, known as Maddy, was the vice-captain of Sheffield United Women and their first player to reach 100 appearances.

On September 20, 2023, at the age of 27, she took her own life.

Cusack’s story is tragic and one that has transcended women’s football. In the midst of dealing with their grief, her family has waited patiently for answers.

The Football Association’s investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death started in January and is still on-going.

In a cafe in Sheffield, just under five miles from where Maddy used to run out every other weekend at Bramall Lane, her mother, Deborah and sister, Olivia, have sat down to speak with Mail Sport.

In an hour-long conversation we talk about what Maddy was like on and off the pitch and the success of the charitable foundation that has been set up in her name. But there are also difficult conversations and that is where we must start.

Because a year on from her passing, both Deborah and Olivia fear that what happened to Maddy could happen again.

‘If things don’t change, there will be another Madeleine,’ Deborah says.

‘It might not be this year, it might not be next year but there will be another Madeleine. That’s wrong, that’s not ok and people should be desperate to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

‘This is one of the worst tragedies to happen in women’s football, it doesn’t get any worse than this. I just think that people should be knocking at my door, asking me what went wrong, asking me what can be changed and what they can do moving forwards. As people that have lived it, I think our experience is very valuable.

Cusack’s passing led many in the women’s game to speak out about the importance of player welfare. Her former Sheffield United manager, Carla Ward, said mental health provision was something that was not taken seriously enough in the women’s game while others have called the system ‘broken’.

‘I think a big thing in women’s football, having lived through it with Maddy, girls are hesitant to speak out and address how they’re feeling within organisations because of the backlash they may face from that,’ Olivia says.

‘Nobody should want this to happen again. It can’t happen again to somebody else and we don’t want anyone else to lose a family member in this way and it should be prevented. I don’t understand why no one else feels the urgency to do that.’

Too many players, Maddy’s family feel, are scared to open up in fear it will hamper their career.

‘If you speak out you’re often perceived to be a troublemaker or potential troublemaker,’ Deborah adds. ‘These girls aren’t on loads of money, they are where they are.

‘When Maddy was part-time she was on £6,000 per year. She’d train two or three times a week and play Sunday. When they went full-time, she was on £18,500, which is not minimum wage. But you’re expected to train, behave and perform like an elite athlete. The disparity is ridiculous because who can live on £18,000 a year, so most people have to get a second job to supplement that so they’re working two jobs, you’re travelling at the weekend.

‘A lot of them just get on with it but you shouldn’t have to do that.’ Alongside her football career, Maddy worked part-time for Sheffield United as a marketing executive.

Her family would be open to discussing how they could potentially help and stop other players going down the same route, but conversations from those who work in the game have not been forthcoming.

‘Lots of pressure groups within the women’s game haven’t been very interested, they’ve not really come to us and asked us what’s gone wrong, what we think needs changing. I think that’s perhaps because people don’t really want to criticise the women’s game because of the way it’s portrayed. What’s happened should be the catalyst for criticism, the catalyst for change, for a better future.’

The FA has introduced measures around mental health which are understood to have been an on-going and long-term process, including a mandate for every club to have a full-time equivalent designated safeguarding and welfare officer. They have also introduced an Unacceptable Behaviour policy for all clubs to follow while players have access to mental health and well-being support and a helpline where players can report any grievances. Clubs are also required to share a well-being and mental health strategy.

Deborah and Olivia describe Maddy as someone who was fiercely competitive in everything she did. As well as playing football, she played quick cricket for her county, competed in the 200 meters and long jump for Amber Valley and was also an accomplished horse rider. In Maddy’s case, taking part was not the most important thing.

‘She had to win everything, even monopoly!’ Deborah says. ‘She re-took her Maths exam four times to get an A*, that’s what she was like.’ Only ballet lessons did not last. ‘Her Nan got her to try it, she was dreadful!’

It is those memories of Maddy that her family are desperate to keep alive. The family set up the MC8 Foundation (eight was the number Maddy wore at Sheffield United) a month after her death with the aim of helping young girls get into football.

‘It was important for us to keep Maddy’s memory alive and help young girls get into football like Maddy did,’ Olivia says.

‘It was inspired by us meeting a little girl called Maddison at a vigil. She explained that she’d found it difficult to get into football and she struck up quite a relationship with Maddy and she helped her get into a team. That’s where the Foundation started and since then we’ve achieved so much.’

There has been a series of fundraising events in the last 10 months, with many more planned, and over £50,000 has been raised. In February, Maddy’s friends and family walked 40 miles from Derby County’s Pride Park Stadium to Bramall Lane. Maddy grew up as a Derby supporter. Her brother, Richard, and Deborah are regulars at home and away games.

It is coincidence that Derby play the Blades at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon and that the Women’s Super League season starts on Friday. Our conversation moves on to whether any clubs have planned tributes to mark the one-year anniversary of Maddy’s passing.

The family will hold a vigil at Bramall Lane on Friday night, which they requested through a friend at Sheffield United, rather than the club directly.

‘Derby fans have arranged to applaud in the eighth minute,’ Deborah says. ‘Richard and I will be in the away end.

‘I assume Sheffield United are not doing anything. The most recent women’s match at Bramall Lane, they had a little bit about her in the digital programme. I can only assume, having not heard, that they’re not doing anything.’

It is as Deborah finishes this sentence that Olivia receives a message from a local reporter who had asked Sheffield United what they would be doing to mark the anniversary of Maddy’s passing.

Olivia reads out the club’s response: ‘The plans include: a series of social posts starting on Thursday on various club channels. Hosting a vigil at Bramall Lane requested by the Cusack family, invited members of the Cusack family to Saturday’s game, a page in Saturday’s programme dedicated to Maddy, big screen imagery and tribute from the stadium announcer pre-match on Saturday, encourage supporters of both teams to applaud on eight minutes, encourage supporters at the women’s team fixture at Newcastle United to applaud on eight minutes.’

To say this is a shock to them both is an understatement. Deborah momentarily gets emotional and questions why she was not consulted.

‘I’m in the away end, I’m going because this is what Richard and I do and I’m going because the last time Madeleine played there I’ve got memories of her coming down the steps…’ As her voice trails off, Deborah takes a couple of seconds to compose her emotions.

‘I’m going because I want to witness the Derby County fans clapping because she deserves that, I want to be there to clap. I’m not going there to see her on the screen, I wouldn’t have known she was going to appear, that will floor me and that is not right. Madeleine is mine, she belongs to me, she doesn’t belong to them.’

The family also say the club has not made a donation to the Foundation.

Mail Sport contacted Sheffield United for comment about their lack of communication with the family. A club spokesperson said: ‘The thoughts of everyone associated with Sheffield United Football Club remain with the Cusack family, as well as Maddy’s friends, colleagues and team-mates.

‘We are pleased to be asked to host a vigil for Maddy and in the closest fixture to the anniversary of her passing – on Saturday 21st September against Derby County, the club Maddy supported – a number of initiatives are planned to supplement those that have taken place in the last 12 months.’

There are plenty of people who have supported the charity and the family have been overwhelmed by the number of strangers who have reached out with stories of how Maddy made an impact on their lives.

‘I’ve found it really comforting. I didn’t realise how much of a role model she was, to us she was just Maddy. Seeing how many people have reached out to us and expressed how much she meant to them, it shows us how important the Foundation is and why there’s a need for it. I wanted her presence to be felt and I wanted her to be heard as well. Maddy’s not here, she can’t say what she wants to say now, but we can do that through the Foundation.

‘It is difficult because, on one hand you’re trying to grieve for yourself but on the other hand you feel you’ve got a responsibility because you want to try and preserve her name. But I do find it comforting. She worked so hard to get to where she got to, a lot of hours, a lot of dedication. She did achieve her goal of playing professionally. That makes me happy knowing she achieved her goal.’

Hamptons socialite Candice Miller is being sued for almost $200,000 in unpaid rent towards a New York City condo just two months after her husband, Brandon Miller’s death.

In court documents obtained by Us Weekly on Tuesday, September 17, a lawsuit against Candice, 42, was filed on Thursday, September 12 in the Supreme Court of New York. It alleged that the former lifestyle blogger owes $194,881.89 for “unpaid use and occupancy of” a 4,382-square foot, five-bedroom, seven-and-a-half-bathroom residence on Park Avenue.

Us has reached out to Candice’s attorney for comment.

Blythewood High School football head coach answers questions following death of student-athlete

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (WIS) – The Blythewood High School community is mourning the loss of a beloved student who died following the death of one of its athletes.

The school announced Saturday the passing of Troy Allen Moore, a high school junior and a varsity athlete in football and basketball.

Earlier on Wednesday, Moore’s head football coach and a fellow teammate spoke about how the team and the school is remembering him.

“He was always the last player out, and always had a big smile,” Martin said.

It was an emotional address coming from Coach Martin as he remembered the star qualities of his star athlete Troy Moore.

“Even when he was leaving, he always asked what could he do to help out, or did we need anything, or could he do something for somebody else,” Martin said.

A leader on and off the field ― Coach Martin said Troy had a bright future ahead of him and was even being looked at by Clemson University’s defensive coach.

He was loved not just for his 6 foot 6 stature, or his great defensive and offensive skills, but because of his big heart, Martin said.

“A plane trip Troy was on over the summer. There was another man Troy was talking to on that trip,” said Martin.  “His mannerisms and his respect and just how he carried himself. He didn’t realize that was a college recruiter who called up the defensive line coach at Clemson and said you need to go to Blythewood.”

Martin says he got a call from that Clemson coach just three weeks ago.

“I remember Troy from when he came in as a little freshman, all the way up to when he grew to be bigger than me,” said football player Sterling Sanders.

17-year-old Sterling Sanders called Troy more than just a friend, but his brother.

Sterling said, “One of my favorite memories is my mom would always get us mixed up at football games and basketball games.”

Sterling played alongside Troy ― he was number 52 while Troy was number 51.

“I’m glad he wore number 51 because he was one and 5″ he said.

A cause of death has not yet been released.

The team is planning to honor Troy with a moment of silence during their JV game on Thursday night. They’ll also wear decals on their helmets.

Counseling services are still available for students and faculty.

  • Home and Away lovers Emily Weir and Tristan Gorey considered leaving the show following their co-star’s shock death

Home and Away lovers Emily Weir and Tristan Gorey considered leaving the show following their co-star’s shock death

Home and Away stars Emily Weir and Tristan Gorey have made the bombshell admission they considered leaving the series following a recent shock death on the show.

The pair play lovebirds Mackenzie and Levi on the series, and admitted they were affected by the recent character death of Felicity Newman, played by Jacqui Purvis.

‘I don’t ever want Mackenzie to die. I want her to leave the Bay, so there’s always a place where I can come back to,’ Emily, 33, told Yahoo Lifestyle.

The brunette bombshell added if her character had to die she would like it to be in a very dramatic and memorable manner.

‘If I had to, I’d love to be in a gunfight or something really left of field. Really do some martial arts, like a fight scene or something.’

Tristan, 29, added he would like his honourable character to take a villainous turn shortly before his on-screen death.

‘I feel like Dr Levi should turn bad and then he’s chasing after Mackenzie and she’s running away, and then he just trips and falls and hits his head,’ he joked.

Last month, fans were left devastated when fan-favourite character Felicity Newman, played by Jacqui Purvis, collapsed in shock scenes.

In the clip which had fans in tears, Felicity suddenly fell to the ground when her vision went blurry during an emotional conversation with ex-husband Tane Parata.

The character was then rushed to hospital in critical condition, as promos confirmed she will die and actress Jacqui will move on from Summer Bay.

‘One of the best actresses Home and Away has ever had,’ one Instagram user said of Jacqui, 33, who has been on the Channel Seven soap drama for three years.

The soap star recently reflected about her stint on the show with Yahoo Lifestyle: ‘I’ve had an incredible time on the show. Some of the best years of my life.

‘However, I knew I wanted an international career, so, I had to make the decision to leave and take the plunge.

‘I owe so much to the show, [and] because of it, I feel confident and ready to take on the international stage.’

Australian actress Jacqui is known for her roles in Home and Away, Neighbours, A Lion Returns, and Undertow, but wishes to make it big in Hollywood.

She intends to jet off to Hollywood soon in pursuit of worldwide fame, following in the footsteps of ex-soap stars Chris Hemsworth, Isla Fisher and Samara Weaving.

An Aussie radio duo has revealed Fatman Scoop made an eerie prediction about his own death in one of his final interviews in Melbourne last year.

The American rapper passed away, aged 53, after he collapsed on stage in Hamden Town Centre Park, Connecticut on Friday and was rushed to hospital.

Now Mix94.5 FM show Pete & Kymba have released one of the hype man’s last interviews, during which he said he wanted to ‘die by my own sword’.

Radio duo Pete Curulli and Kymba Cahill dug up the interview from 2023 which saw Fatman promoting the annual R&B event Fridayz Live.

During the candid chat, he revealed he was on a quest for a healthier lifestyle as he lost weight and enjoyed bike riding down Perth’s West Coast Highway.

As the trio discussed plans to go bike riding together, Pete said: ‘Mr Scoop, I’ve got a suggestion for you. I’ve just found a tandem, a three person bike.’

‘You want the three of us to ride on a bike?’ said Fatman, real name Isaac Freeman III, to which Pete enthusiastically agreed.

However, Fatman appeared to have some trepidations, saying: ‘If the three of us ride on a bike and one of us messes up everybody’s taking a dive.’

He then made the eerie statement: ‘If I’m gonna take a dive, if I’m gonna die – I want to die on my own sword. I don’t want to die on your sword, sir.’

It comes after another Aussie radio duo, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, revealed the final words of Fatman before he tragically collapsed onstage.

Speaking about the tragedy on Monday morning’s Kyle and Jackie O Show, the radio hosts played a short clip from what would be Fatman’s final performance.

The US rapper could be heard breathlessly hyping the excited crowd up with: ‘I said Hamden make some noise!’

He then shouted, ‘If you came to party,’ before taking a long pause to catch his breath.

‘Make some noise,’ he continued before collapsing on the stage.

Medics raced to revive him, but Fatman’s tour manager finally announced his passing on Saturday, saying he was ‘lost for words’.

Freeman’s manager, DJ and producer Birch Michael, announced the rapper’s death ‘with the heaviest of hearts’ in posts to social media.

Shortly after, the artist’s family said in a statement that he was ‘not just a world class performer – he was a father, brother, uncle and a friend’.

He was known for his deep, roaring vocal presence and his family described him as ‘the undisputed voice of the club’.

The three-time Grammy Award winner recently ventured into podcasting and reality TV, including appearing on Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother: UK vs USA in 2015.

The artist’s exact cause of death is not clear, however it came after he suffered the medical emergency on stage.
