    $2,000 chicken rice? Shuttler Loh Kean Yew receives Grab food delivery in Denmark, Lifestyle News

    Getting chicken rice from Singapore delivered to you when in Denmark?

    That appears to be the privilege that one enjoys as a brand ambassador for Grab.

    In a cute video posted by Grab Singapore on Sunday (Oct 20), Singapore shuttler Loh Kean Yew is seen receiving a surprise delivery from Grab while overseas, after earlier making an Instagram post that he was craving for chicken rice.

    Kean Yew had been in Odense, Denmark for the Denmark Open, which ended on Oct 20.

    In the clip, posted to Grab’s social media accounts, a woman decked out in the company’s delivery uniform is shown catching a flight from Singapore to Zurich via Swiss Air, armed with a red plastic bag containing a styrofoam box.

    She then hops on a connecting flight to Copenhagen followed by a train ride. After at least one car journey, another train ride, and what looks to be loads of walking, she eventually ends up at the door of where Kean Yew had been putting up.

    After hesitantly cracking open the door, the 27-year-old badminton champ looks surprised as he exclaims: “Huh, you all really come? I thought you all joking eh. Oh my god, thank you, thank you.”

    ‘How much is the delivery fee?’

    The Grab employee had earlier showed how the drop-off was sparked by a post by Kean Yew on Oct 16, which stated how he was “thinking about” chicken rice while in Odense.


    Responding to a comment by Grab that said it would deliver the dish to him when he’s back, Kean Yew wrote: “I’m a Grab Unlimited subscriber though, can get chicken rice in Denmark?”

    The tech company swiftly responded, “Okay.”

    In a comment left by Kean Yew on Grab’s latest video, he wrote: “Still can’t believe it.”

    However, at least one netizen wondered if the entire thing was staged.

    In an email to AsiaOne, a spokesperson for Grab stated that the video was part of “an exciting activation” that Grab just worked on with Kean Yew, who was appointed its first brand ambassador in 2022.

    Some other viewers had more practical concerns, such as how much the delivery fee for such a trip would cost.

    “Delivery fee’s going to be like SGD2,000,” wrote one commenter.

    Another expressed hope to receive the same kind of service.

    “I’m in Toronto, Canada. Feel free to deliver chicken rice to me any day, any time.”

    A large number of commenters, however, appeared to be concerned that the chicken rice would have ended up inedible by the time it reached Kean Yew’s hands.

    “Can’t be eaten ba [sic] after such a long flight from SG. Unless it has been frozen beforehand.”

    Responding to our queries, the spokesperson affirmed that the chicken rice was not brought through customs due to issues with food safety. 

    Instead, they revealed that the company had worked with a Denmark-based Singaporean home cook, known on Instagram as Eatbyjun, to make the dish.  

    Last year, a video which showed a Grab rider flying to Singapore to buy chicken rice for a Thai customer had gone viral.

    It was later confirmed by a Grab spokesperson that the clip was a “fictional video created by a member of the public independently”.

    The video also carried a disclaimer that the special delivery was “an agreement between the rider and the orderer only“.

    Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal took the initiative of working as a delivery agent for a day, accompanied by his wife, Gia Goyal. On October 6, he shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) recounting an unpleasant experience while picking up an order from Gurugram’s Ambience Mall. According to Goyal, he was barred from using the mall’s main entrance and was directed to take the stairs to the third floor. However, the ordeal didn’t end there – he wasn’t allowed to enter the mall and had to wait near the staircase with other delivery agents.

    “Here’s what happened during the second order I delivered. We reached Ambience Mall in Gurugram to pick up an order from Haldiram’s,” the text in the video reads. The security guards stopped him from entering and told him to use the stairs. “I went to the main entrance again to check if there were any elevators for delivery partners. I took the stairs to the third floor only to realise we couldn’t enter the mall and had to wait by the stairs to receive the orders,” Goyal explained. He sat on the floor with the other delivery agents, “chilling” and gathering feedback from them. Eventually, he managed to sneak into the mall and collect the order while the guard took a brief break. After overcoming these hurdles, Goyal was “finally out for delivery.”

    Reactions were quick to flow in the comments section. A person pointed out, “Every society, every mall and every office should make it mandatory for delivery partners to use normal regular lifts and entrances/exits. There shouldn’t be any divide.”

    Echoing a similar sentiment an individual said, “It took you so long to address this issue but I’m glad at least you did it. This isn’t a problem of just malls. In fact, many societies don’t allow delivery partners to take the main lift.”

    Lauding Deepinder Goyal’s initiative a user wrote, “CEO on the ground, a connected culture trend among delivery partners and experiencing the problems by self is great move.”

    “A prime example of – knowing a problem allows you to fix it, but experiencing the problem compels you to solve it,” read a remark. 

    Impressed by the gesture, someone else commented, “Super proud of you for doing this! We need more CEOs on the ground – knowing what is going on and how they can actually improve,” 

    So far, the video has garnered close to 1.5 million views on the micro-blogging platform.

In the video, the guys conceal a plastic box of “two days old food” in a paper bag and ask a few people to “guess the smell.” Unaware of what they are smelling, people are appalled by the unpleasant smell and describe it with words like “death”, “dirty armpits”, “vomit”, “diarrhoea”, and “highway toilets”. The digital creators explain that this is what happens if you do not clean out the food before disposing of the box.

    What Is The Right Way To Dispose Of Leftover Food Boxes?

    Before disposing of the plastic box, it is important to clean it out and remove all food items from it. Next, wash and dry the box and then you can put it in the dry waste bin.

    If you leave leftover food or curry in the boxes and throw it in the bin, it won’t get recycled and end up in the landfill, the video explains. It will also pose significant health risks for waste pickers.

    In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the person attached a screenshot of his order with a sarcastic note. It read, “Thank you Amazon for delivering my order after 2 years. The cook is elated after the prolonged wait, must be a very special pressure cooker!”

    Responding to the post, the official customer service page of Amazon, Amazon Help wrote, “Hi there, we’re sorry to hear this. Kindly report this to our support team.”

    The user replied to the company by writing, “Report what? The order was cancelled and refunded back in 2022? And delivered out of nowhere yesterday. How do I pay for it now?”

    The post quickly became viral and many others also shared their reactions in the comments section.

    A user joked, “They were cooking it for real.”

    Another one hilariously added, “I think your order is coming from parallel universe so it took 2 years to reach it to you.”

    “I think amazon delivered from mars,” read a comment.

    Someone talked about a similar experience. They wrote, “A similar strange thing happened to me as well. I ordered a product in June 2023, reported it as missing in transit, and got a refund. But then, out of the blue, it was delivered in October.”
