Why Cold Water Isn’t Good For Your Digestive System

Cold water, or in fact, any cold foods like ice creams and sodas aren’t good for your digestive system as it diminishes your agni, which is called digestive fire in Ayurveda.

    Why Is Agni Important?

As per Ayurvedic health coach Dimple Jangda, Agni is important for maintaining and sustaining life, and also supporting vital functions like digestion, metabolism and immunity. Your body has a warm internal environment – 37 *C – that supports life.

What Happens To Your Body When You Drink Cold Water?

    1. When you drink cold water or eat cold foods, it diminishes the Agni and also, weakens your digestive system, making it more sluggish and slow which leads to weight gain, indigestion and bloating.

    2. Cold water interferes with the stomach acids and bile by diluting them which can lead to indigestion. Moreover, your body has to spend more energy to heat up the cold liquids in your stomach which can lead to lethargy, fatigue, and discomfort.

    What To Do Instead?

As per Jangda, instead of opting for cold water, include warm water in your daily diet to keep your digestive system happy.

    1. Sip warm water during the meal if you have to drink water.

    2. Sip warm water throughout the day, 30 minutes before and after a meal

    3. You can also have a lot of warm, herbal teas with a dash of lemon juice to improve your digestion, metabolism and immunity.

How Does Warm Water Benefit Your Body?

Drinking warm water, even when you crave for cold, can do multiple benefits to your body.

    1. Prevents Constipation

As per consultant nutritionist Rupali Datta, warm water is great for internal ‘cleansing’ as it regulates bowel movement and prevents constipation.

    2. Great For Glowing Skin

When you drink warm water, it raises your body temperature and helps release toxins. This detoxification is great for glowing skin.

    3. Stimulates Hunger

As per Bengaluru-based nutritionist Anju Sood, when you drink warm water, your body has to work harder to bring down its temperature. This helps start the metabolic system and stimulates hunger.

    4. Clears Out Congestion

Warm water and its steam help clear out congestion and soothe an aching throat. Drinking it regularly will help prevent phlegm accumulation too.

So, choose warm water in your daily routine to keep your digestive system smooth and happy!

  • Dont Drink Spoiled Wine! 3 Signs Your Wine Is Not Worth Drinking

Dont Drink Spoiled Wine! 3 Signs Your Wine Is Not Worth Drinking

Fruity, oaky, zesty, tart – wine is like a never-ending flavour adventure. If you’re big on wine, you know how much a perfectly good bottle matters. But what if your wine isn’t quite what it used to be? Does ageing always make it better? Spoiler: Nope, it’s all about how you store it. Maybe you popped open a bottle, didn’t finish it, and now it’s just sitting there. At your next gathering, you might be staring at it, wondering, “Is this still drinkable?” Been there, done that? No worries, we’ve got you. Master of Wine Sonal C. Holland spilt the tea (or should we say wine?) on Instagram about the 3 red flags your wine has gone south.

Here Are 3 Easy Ways to Tell If Your Wine Has Gone Bad:

    1. Check How It Looks

Start with a good look. Examine the colour and texture – does it seem a little off? Sonal says this is especially for wines that are supposed to be clear. If it looks cloudy or there’s a weird film floating around, don’t even think about drinking it. That cloudiness? It’s a sign of bacterial activity. A great wine will always have a clean, clear appearance.

    2. Give It A Sniff

Still unsure? Sniff it out. According to Sonal, this is one of the most obvious ways to figure things out. A good wine smells amazing-think fruity, floral, or oaky, depending on the type. But if it smells like chemicals or has a medicinal vibe, it’s officially done for. Some bad wines even smell like straight-up vinegar. Gross, right?

    3. Take A Sip (If You Dare)

Missed the visual and sniffing hints? Well, one sip will tell you everything. A wine gone bad will taste funky-like vinegar, horseradish, or caramel that’s way off. If you taste any of these, say goodbye to that bottle. A good wine? It should always taste balanced and smooth, always.

How To Store Your Wine the Right Way

Wine only stays awesome if you store it properly. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your bottle tasting its best:

    1. Right Temperature

Temperature matters more than you think! Too warm, and your wine could age too quickly; too cold, and the flavour profile might get muted. Aim for the sweet spot of 55 degrees F (13 degrees C) for the perfect balance.

    2. Keep It Horizontal

Laying the bottle on its side ensures the cork stays moist and doesn’t shrink. A dry cork can let in air, which can spoil the wine. So, horizontal storage is a win-win.

    3. Avoid Direct Sunlight

Sunlight is wine’s worst enemy. It can mess with the wine’s chemistry, making it lose its flavour or age prematurely. A cool, dark spot is where your wine wants to be.

    4. Steady The Temperature

Fluctuations in temperature are just as harmful as storing it at the wrong temperature. Keep your wine in a stable environment to avoid spoilage.

    5. Humidity Is Key

Ideally, keep your storage area at about 60-70% humidity. Too dry, and the cork might dry out. Too humid, and you risk mould.

    6. Use A Wine Fridge If Needed

If you don’t have a naturally cool, dark place to store wine, investing in a wine fridge could be your best option. It maintains the perfect conditions year-round.

    7. Seal It Right After Opening

Once opened, reseal your wine tightly and store it upright in the fridge to slow down oxidation. For sparkling wines, use a proper stopper to keep the fizz intact.

Whether you’re a wine pro or just starting your journey, these tips can save you from a bad sip. And, don’t forget to drink responsibly. Cheers!

  • New Study Reveals Drinking Coffee May Boost Lifespan By Nearly 2 Years

New Study Reveals Drinking Coffee May Boost Lifespan By Nearly 2 Years

Drinking coffee could add almost two years of healthy living to one’s life, according to a new study that reviewed previously published research. The study, published in Ageing Research Reviews journal, found that the benefits of drinking coffee “correspond to an average increase in healthspan of 1.8 years.” Researchers from Portugal suggested that as the global population ages, regular, moderate consumption of coffee could play an important role in supporting a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
“We know that the world’s population is aging faster than ever, which is why it’s increasingly important to explore dietary interventions which may allow people to not only live longer but also healthier lives,” said Rodrigo Cunha, from the University of Coimbra in Portugal and lead author of the study. Coffee, a widely studied commodity, has been shown to reduce deaths from various causes, including lowering the risk of heart disease, cognitive decline, and chronic diseases, among others.
While commonly associated with caffeine, coffee contains a mixture of over 2,000 potentially bioactive compounds, including those that offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, reduce neuroinflammation, and regulate insulin sensitivity. “Our review underlines the role regular, moderate coffee consumption can play in mediating against the biological mechanisms which naturally slow or fail as we get older — triggering a range of potential health issues and comorbidities,” Cunha explained.
Furthermore, the team noted that studies suggest nutritional “anti-ageing” interventions may have a gender bias, favouring either men or women. However, the ageing-related benefits of coffee were found in both sexes. For the review, the authors specifically focused on studies examining how coffee affects biological processes that contribute to ageing, including genomic instability and cell mutations.
Although older adults are traditionally advised to reduce or avoid coffee, the authors suggested that clinical guidelines should now be re-evaluated in light of compelling scientific evidence supporting coffee’s role in healthy ageing. “Traditional clinical recommendations have at times overlooked coffee’s role in healthy aging, but with a strong research base around how regular consumption can potentially reduce some of the most chronic diseases facing society, it is likely time to re-evaluate these,” Cunha said.
However, the exact mechanisms by which coffee and its components contribute to extending healthy life remain unclear, and future research could explore this further, the researchers concluded.

  • How Drinking Morning Tea Impacts Your Gut Health

How Drinking Morning Tea Impacts Your Gut Health

Tea is a beloved beverage for many, especially in the morning. Its warmth and flavour can be comforting, making it a staple in countless households. However, have you ever considered how your morning tea might be affecting your gut health? In an Instagram post, Dr Snehal Adsule emphasised that sipping tea on an empty stomach can lead to various digestive issues. “Imagine you wake up early in the morning, feeling hungry and excited about having breakfast. You go to the kitchen, and the first thing you do is make a cup of tea. You drink the tea, and it tastes delicious, but as time passes, you start feeling nauseous and dizzy. You can’t seem to eat anything, and the whole day goes by without any productivity,” writes the expert. Do you relate to it?

Also Read: What’s The Buzz About Yellow Tea? What’s In It For You? Explore Its Health Benefits

The Impact Of Morning Tea On Gut Health:

According to Dr. Snehal Adsule, the primary culprit behind issues like acidity and nausea is the caffeine in tea. While caffeine can boost alertness, it also stimulates the production of stomach acid. When consumed on an empty stomach, this excess acid can lead to symptoms such as stomach pain, bloating, and in severe cases, vomiting. Over time, these issues can create a cycle of discomfort that impacts your daily activities.

Moreover, tea contains tannins, which are compounds that can hinder the absorption of essential nutrients like iron and calcium. If your morning routine revolves around tea without accompanying food, you risk missing out on these vital nutrients. This is particularly concerning for individuals who rely on their morning meals to provide the energy and nutrition needed for a busy day.

    Healthier Alternative To Morning Tea

In light of these concerns, Dr. Snehal Adsule suggests an approach that prioritizes your gut health. She emphasizes the importance of starting your day with solid food rather than liquid caffeine. Just like a car requires fuel to run efficiently, your body needs proper nourishment to function optimally.

Also Read: How Long You Must Steep Tea Leaves For That Perfect Cup Of Chai

Celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija echoes this sentiment, advising against beginning the day with caffeine. “Never start your day with caffeine- be it coffee or tea,” she cautions. “Caffeine should not be the first thing that you give your body on an empty stomach. You need to line your stomach with some solids before you take caffeine; otherwise, it may trigger stomach acids and wreak havoc with your digestion throughout the day.”

So, what can you do instead? Makhija recommends options like a glass of fresh juice, a bowl of fruits, or even warm water to kick-start your system. These alternatives not only provide hydration but also offer essential nutrients that prepare your stomach for the caffeine boost that tea can provide later on.

By making a conscious decision to avoid tea on an empty stomach, you prioritize your digestive health. Starting your day with a nutritious breakfast can enhance your overall well-being, helping you feel more energized and focused throughout the day.

Ultimately, it’s about making choices that align with your health goals. Instead of defaulting to that comforting cup of tea first thing in the morning, consider taking a moment to nourish your body with whole foods. This small adjustment can significantly impact your gut health and overall productivity.

Here’s What Happens To Your Body When You Give Up Alcohol

    1) May Help In Weight Loss

Have you heard about the term “beer belly?” It means a person’s large belly caused due to excessive beer consumption. As per the official website of the Victorian Government, Australia, alcoholic beverages are high in calories and stop your body from burning fat. Moreover, it can make you feel hungry and crave greasy and salty foods. Alcohol can also irritate your digestive system and lead to problems like acid reflux. If you stop drinking alcohol, it could not only help you with your weight problems but can also keep your digestive problems at bay.

    2) Improved Sleep Cycle

Are you having trouble sleeping at night? This could be because of your alcohol consumption. Alcohol can disturb your sleeping patterns and disrupt the quality of rest. While it may initially help you sleep, it disrupts the later stages of your cycle. This claim has been backed by a research paper published by the Cambridge University Press in November 2020, which concluded that alcohol consumption can lead to poor sleep quality and short sleep duration. So, when you bid farewell to alcohol, your sleep cycle improves drastically!

    3) Enhanced Cognitive Functions

Everybody who is familiar with the effects of alcohol knows that it impairs your cognitive functions. This is because alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that can impact your concentration and memory. Nutritionist Rupali Datta said, “Consumption of higher amounts of alcohol has a direct impact on your cognitive abilities. Once you stop drinking, they start improving. Your disorders and depression start improving.” So, if you stop drinking alcohol, your work performance, decision-making skills and daily tasks can have a positive impact.

    4) Better Skin Quality

Are you someone who suffers from dull skin after a night of letting loose? Then this could be because of your alcohol consumption. Nutritionist Rupali Datta said that alcohol has a direct impact on your liver and it could lead to bad skin. Alcohol dehydrates your body and can also lead to inflammation. When you stop drinking alcohol, your body can maintain its hydration levels, which could lead to visibly better skin and overall appearance.

    5) May Improve Liver Health

As mentioned above, alcohol has a direct impact on your liver. The largest solid organ of your body, the liver plays a key role in detoxifying and metabolizing substances. Heavy alcohol drinkers usually face several health problems like liver inflammation, fatty liver and in extreme cases, cirrhosis. According to a research paper published in Alcohol Health and Research World, a large proportion of heavy alcohol consumers develop serious alcoholic liver disease. When you stop drinking, it gives your liver a chance to improve its functions, while decreasing the chances of long-term health damage.
