First Drive: 2025 MINI Countryman SE ALL4 Experience the All-Electric Lifestyle | Automotive

    2025 MINI Countryman SE ALL4--.jpg

A MINI is a unique vehicle for a unique customer. No matter if owners are rolling behind the wheel of a MINI Countryman or a MINI Cooper S, they will be appeased and enthused by the classic design themes, sporty proportions, and exhilarating go-kart performance of these lifestyle cars and crossovers. Now, electrification is part of the portfolio, highlighted by the all-electric 2025 MINI Countryman SE ALL4.

For the current lifecycle, the MINI brand is infusing its portfolio with 11 new models to change the outlook of consumer perception and to stay on top of the small car segment. By the end of 2025 the reinvention strategy will represent the most progressive changes since the company’s inception in 1959. A key focus will be on MINI’s largest models – (Countryman S and Countryman SE) which are longer, taller, and rebuilt from the ground up for traveling and active families. The compact SUV will help engaged owners thrive in both the city and the countryside, especially with increased interior room for gear and equipment and ALL4 all-wheel drive to take on any terrain type and adverse weather. It also represents the first MINI with Level 2 assistance systems for semi-automated driving, if that’s your thing. It’s definitely not mine because I want to control my ride at all times.

    2025 MINI Countryman SE ALL4_-.jpg

“The new all-electric, all-wheel-drive MINI Countryman is the epitome of versatility and driving pleasure. It is the first MINI “Made in Germany” and makes a statement for environmentally friendly mobility. Thanks to its increased dimensions, it is a vehicle for the entire family,” says Stefanie Wurst, head of MINI.

I had a chance to drive and evaluate the all-electric MINI Countryman SE in South Carolina at the BMW Performance Driving Center during the BMW Group’s annual media event featuring most of its roster. The Countryman SE exudes a sense of adventure and versatility, encapsulated in a bold design and cutting-edge technologies. With expectations of the MINI brand going all-electric by 2030, product planners laid the foundation for a mobility shift that will see a vastly reduced carbon footprint from MINI’s squad of legendary automobiles. Combining instantaneous electric torque, regenerative braking, and stellar cornering with dynamic driving, every road trip will be a joy.

The MINI SUV is ignited by two electric motors with a total output of 308-horsepower and 364 lb.-ft. of torque for a 0-to-60 mph acceleration time of 5.4 seconds. Combined with the 66.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Countryman SE can achieve an EPA electric range of up to 212 miles. However, that needs to increase dramatically to appease today’s drivers who are taking more long-distance journeys in their new rides. This vehicle should at least be able to hit 300 electric miles. As part of the EV ownership experience, plan to install a Level 2 charger (240-volt) at your home. This will alleviate the need to find public charging on busy days. Yet, expect to pay $1,000 or more for the unit and installation. However, you should be able to find local deductions from the state or your utility company.

    2025 MINI Countryman SE ALL4.jpg

The MINI Countryman SE embraces a minimalist silhouette, reflecting adventure and versatility. Overall, styling is more robust but streamlined with a surfboard-designed roof that cuts through the elements, a simplified power-dome hood, a new octagonal-shaped grille, new signature lights, 18” or 20” light alloy rims, a flush rear bumper, and vertical LED taillamps. A panoramic glass roof brings energetic light into the sustainable cabin.

The vertical theme follows the interior including the vents and door handles. A plant-based cockpit from leather-free upholstery, fewer parts for construction, and human-centric amenities are additionally implemented. The 9.4” OLED circular center display and MINI Operating System 9 provide all the necessary information for an intuitive drive. From here, you control the infotainment features, MINI Navigation, assistance systems, MINI Driving Sounds, and MINI Experience Modes, whether Core, Green, Personal, Timeless, Balance, Vivid, or Trail. The digital tunes from the MINI Driving Sounds coincide with the theme chosen for an immersive driving experience.

The enthusiastic MINI brand will continue to digitize its community while leaving a smaller carbon footprint behind. Its reduced economic dependence stems from 90% recycled materials, secondary aluminum, and increased sensors in place of heavier parts. Moreover, MINI’s philosophy of Charismatic Simplicity will dictate the design direction, focusing on three key elements: a sporty and thick multifunction steering wheel, intelligent command center, and toggle switches. I’m also a fan of the two-tone textiles lining the dash and doors. Everything about the car is simplistic and integrates sound, projection, and light for one curated driving encounter.

    2025 MINI Countryman SE ALL4___.jpg

With an MSRP of $45,200, there are two MINI Countryman style packages to choose from: Classic and Favoured. An 8-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty adds to the 4-year / 50,000-mile limited warranty and 3-year complimentary maintenance program. Upgrade to the $3,200 Iconic Trim package to receive privacy glass, power front seats, interior cameras, and the must-have Harmon Kardon audio system.

The fun, entertaining, and youthful 2025 Countryman SE ALL4 captures the essence and mindset of the MINI community, but now with an electrified attitude. Are you ready to ride the all-electric MINI wave?

  • US agency says Tesla’s public statements imply that its vehicles can drive themselves. They can’t

US agency says Tesla’s public statements imply that its vehicles can drive themselves. They can’t

DETROIT — The U.S. government’s highway safety agency says Tesla is telling drivers in public statements that its vehicles can drive themselves, conflicting with owners manuals and briefings with the agency saying the electric vehicles need human supervision.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is asking the company to “revisit its communications” to make sure messages are consistent with user instructions.

The request came in a May email to the company from Gregory Magno, a division chief with the agency’s Office of Defects Investigation. It was attached to a letter seeking information on a probe into crashes involving Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” system in low-visibility conditions. The letter was posted Friday on the agency’s website.

The agency began the investigation in October after getting reports of four crashes involving “Full Self-Driving” when Teslas encountered sun glare, fog and airborne dust. An Arizona pedestrian was killed in one of the crashes.

Critics, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, have long accused Tesla of using deceptive names for its partially automated driving systems, including “Full Self-Driving” and “Autopilot,” both of which have been viewed by owners as fully autonomous.

The letter and email raise further questions about whether Full Self-Driving will be ready for use without human drivers on public roads, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk has predicted. Much of Tesla’s stock valuation hinges on the company deploying a fleet of autonomous robotaxis.

Musk, who has promised autonomous vehicles before, said the company plans to have autonomous Models Y and 3 running without human drivers next year. Robotaxis without steering wheels would be available in 2026 starting in California and Texas, he said.

A message was sent Friday seeking comment from Tesla.

In the email, Magno writes that Tesla briefed the agency in April on an offer of a free trial of “Full Self-Driving” and emphasized that the owner’s manual, user interface and a YouTube video tell humans that they have to remain vigilant and in full control of their vehicles.

But Magno cited seven posts or reposts by Tesla’s account on X, the social media platform owned by Musk, that Magno said indicated that Full Self-Driving is capable of driving itself.

“Tesla’s X account has reposted or endorsed postings that exhibit disengaged driver behavior,” Magno wrote. “We believe that Tesla’s postings conflict with its stated messaging that the driver is to maintain continued control over the dynamic driving task.”

The postings may encourage drivers to see Full Self-Driving, which now has the word “supervised” next to it in Tesla materials, to view the system as a “chauffeur or robotaxi rather than a partial automation/driver assist system that requires persistent attention and intermittent intervention by the driver,” Magno wrote.

On April 11, for instance, Tesla reposted a story about a man who used Full Self-Driving to travel 13 miles (21 kilometers) from his home to an emergency room during a heart attack just after the free trial began on April 1. A version of Full Self-Driving helped the owner “get to the hospital when he needed immediate medical attention,” the post said.

In addition, Tesla says on its website that use of Full Self-Driving and Autopilot without human supervision depends on “achieving reliability” and regulatory approval, Magno wrote. But the statement is accompanied by a video of a man driving on local roads with his hands on his knees, with a statement that, “The person in the driver’s seat is only there for legal reasons. He is not doing anything. The car is driving itself,” the email said.

In the letter seeking information on driving in low-visibility conditions, Magno wrote that the investigation will focus on the system’s ability to perform in low-visibility conditions caused by “relatively common traffic occurrences.”

Drivers, he wrote, may not be told by the car that they should decide where Full Self-Driving can safely operate or fully understand the capabilities of the system.

“This investigation will consider the adequacy of feedback or information the system provides to drivers to enable them to make a decision in real time when the capability of the system has been exceeded,” Magno wrote.

The letter asks Tesla to describe all visual or audio warnings that drivers get that the system “is unable to detect and respond to any reduced visibility condition.”

The agency gave Tesla until Dec. 18 to respond to the letter, but the company can ask for an extension.

That means the investigation is unlikely to be finished by the time President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, and Trump has said he would put Musk in charge of a government efficiency commission to audit agencies and eliminate fraud. Musk spent at least $119 million in a campaign to get Trump elected, and Trump has spoken against government regulations.

Auto safety advocates fear that if Musk gains some control over NHTSA, the Full Self-Driving and other investigations into Tesla could be derailed.

Musk even floated the idea of him helping to develop national safety standards for self-driving vehicles.

“Of course the fox wants to build the henhouse,” said Michael Brooks, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, a nonprofit watchdog group.

He added that he can’t think of anyone who would agree that a business mogul should have direct involvement in regulations that affect the mogul’s companies.

“That’s a huge problem for democracy, really,” Brooks said.

Russia amplified hurricane disinformation to drive Americans apart, researchers find

WASHINGTON — Russia has helped amplify and spread false and misleading internet claims about recent hurricanes in the United States and the federal government’s response, part of a wider effort by the Kremlin to manipulate America’s political discourse before the presidential election, new research shows.

The content, spread by Russian state media and networks of social media accounts and websites, criticizes the federal response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, exploiting legitimate concerns about the recovery effort in an attempt to paint American leaders as incompetent and corrupt, according to research from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. The London-based organization tracks disinformation and online extremism.

In some cases, the claims about the storms include fake images created using artificial intelligence, such as a photo depicting scenes of devastating flooding at Disney World that never happened, researchers say.

The approach is consistent with the Kremlin’s long-standing practice of identifying legitimate debates and contentious issues in the U.S. and then exploiting them. Previous disinformation campaigns have harnessed debates about immigration, racism, crime and the economy in an effort to portray the U.S. as corrupt, violent and unjust.

U.S. intelligence officials and private tech companies say Russian activity has increased sharply before the Nov. 5 election as Moscow tries to capitalize on an opportunity to undermine its chief global adversary.

By seizing on real concerns about disaster recovery, Russia’s disinformation agencies can worm their way into U.S. discourse, using hot-button issues to undermine Americans’ trust in their government and each other.

“These are not situations that foreign actors are creating,” said Melanie Smith, director of research at ISD. “They’re simply pouring gasoline on fires that already exist.”

The content identified by ISD included English-language posts obviously meant for Americans, as well as Russian-language propaganda intended for domestic audiences. Much of the disinformation took aim at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Democratic administration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. She is her party’s nominee in the White House race against former President Donald Trump.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine remains the Kremlin’s prime motivation for spreading lies about the hurricane response. If Russia can persuade enough Americans to oppose U.S. support for Ukraine, that could ease the way for a Moscow victory, officials and analysts have said.

U.S. intelligence officials have said Russia’s disinformation seems designed to support Trump, who has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and disparaged the NATO alliance and Ukraine’s leaders. Posts linked to Russia routinely denigrate Harris, saying she is ignoring the pleas of storm victims. By contrast, a recent post from Russian state media company RT called Trump “a mystical figure of historic proportions.”

Intelligence officials confirmed Tuesday that Russia created a manipulated video to smear Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Russia has rejected claims that it trying to meddle in the U.S. election. The Russian Embassy hasn’t responded to messages this week seeking comment about recent allegations by researchers and intelligence officials.

Researchers at ISD found that Russian disinformation agents exploited weak content moderation on U.S.-owned social media platforms such as X to spread their content far and wide. Before it was purchased and renamed by Elon Musk, the platform once known as Twitter required labels on content from authoritarian state media. Musk rescinded that rule and gutted the platform’s content moderation efforts, leading to a surge in foreign propaganda, hate speech and extremist recruitment.

Often the false or misleading claims come from fake accounts or websites that mimic Americans or legitimate news outlets, making it difficult to determine their true origin. Unsuspecting Americans then repost and spread the content.

In July, American intelligence officials warned that “unwitting Americans” were helping do Russia’s work for it.

Vast armies of fake or automated accounts help spread the material further.

Researchers at the Israeli tech firm Cyabra analyzed popular posts on X that criticized FEMA for its storm response. A significant number could not be verified as belonging to a real person; one-quarter of all the responses to popular posts were deemed fake. The posts were seen by users over half a billion times.

In response, a spokesperson for X pointed to the platform’s system that allows users to add context to posts with false claims. The company did not respond to questions about its labeling policy.

“The false claims, ranging from FEMA diverting funds to aid migrants to conspiracy theories about weather manipulation, undermine public trust in government as we near election day, which could seriously impact voter confidence,” Cyabra researchers said in a report.

Politicians also have helped spread Russia’s talking points.

Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., gave an interview to the Russian state media outlet Sputnik News for a piece that played up criticism of the hurricane response. He told Sputnik that the federal response was “nonexistent,” a claim easily debunked by photos and videos of FEMA recovery workers as well as the firsthand accounts of local leaders and residents in hard-hit regions.

Gosar repeated another misleading claim that “billions of FEMA disaster funds” had been given instead to immigrants without legal status. In truth, money that funds U.S. border control and immigration programs comes from a different source than disaster funds.

Gosar’s office did not respond to messages seeking comment Wednesday.

Bentley Residences Miami offers unprecedented luxury living with sky-high garages, allowing residents to park their cars directly in their apartments.

Bentley Motors has unveiled plans for an extraordinary residential tower in Miami that promises to redefine opulent urban living.

The Bentley Residences Miami, slated for completion in 2026, will offer an unprecedented amenity that is set to revolutionise high-end city dwelling – the ability for residents to park their prized vehicles directly inside their sky-high apartments, courtesy of an innovative car lift system dubbed the ‘Dezervator’.

Bentley Residences Miami: A New Paradigm in Luxury Living

Rising 61 storeys above the pristine sands of Sunny Isles Beach, the Bentley Residences Miami represents the iconic British automaker’s grand entrance into the world of branded real estate. At the heart of the Bentley Residences Miami’s unique offering is the ‘Dezervator’, a revolutionary elevator system that allows residents to ascend directly to their apartments whilst comfortably seated in their vehicles.

How lifestyle choices & genetics drive alarming surge in fatty liver disease – Firstpost

Fatty liver disease is a growing concern in India with factors such as insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and genetic predispositions playing key roles in its development. The disease progresses from simple fat accumulation in the liver to severe conditions like cirrhosis and liver cancer if left untreated.

In India, lifestyle factors like sedentary behaviour and poor diet, along with genetic variations, contribute significantly to the disease’s prevalence. NAFLD (Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) impacts approximately 20% of non-obese individuals in India, contrasting with its usual association with obesity in Western populations. We spoke with Dr. Nishant Nagpal, Director of Gastroenterology at Fortis Hospital (Noida) to delve deeper into the issue.

What are the primary causes of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), and how does it differ from Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)?

Dr. Nishant Nagpal: The primary causes of NAFLD include insulin resistance, which leads to increased glucose and lipid accumulation in liver cells. Other contributing factors are metabolic syndrome and conditions like obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and genetic predispositions such as certain genetic mutations (e.g., PNPLA3) that affect liver fat metabolism. Environmental factors like a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet and exposure to toxins also play a role. NAFLD is a spectrum ranging from simple steatosis (fat accumulation in liver cells) to the more aggressive NASH, which is characterised by inflammation and liver cell damage.

How does FLD progress from simple steatosis to more severe conditions like cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma?

Dr. Nagpal: FLD progresses in stages. It starts with simple steatosis, where excess fat accumulates in liver cells. This can advance to Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), which involves inflammation and liver damage. Over time, the condition can lead to fibrosis (scarring) as collagen is deposited in the liver. If left untreated, it can progress to cirrhosis, characterised by advanced scarring and liver dysfunction and in some cases, hepatocellular carcinoma, which is liver cancer.

What lifestyle and genetic factors contribute most to the development of FLD in Indian patients?

Dr. Nagpal: In Indian patients, a sedentary lifestyle significantly contributes to insulin resistance and obesity, which are major risk factors for FLD. Unhealthy diets high in sugar, salt, and saturated fats exacerbate the problem. Central obesity which is common in the Indian population increases the risk of insulin resistance and certain genetic mutations such as PNPLA3 and TM6SF2, further predispose people to the disease.

What are the most common symptoms of fatty liver disease, and at what stage do these typically manifest?

Dr. Nagpal: The most common symptoms of fatty liver disease include fatigue which is related to liver dysfunction and inflammation and abdominal discomfort often felt as pain or tenderness in the upper right abdomen. Patients may experience weight loss in advanced stages due to decreased appetite and malabsorption as well as jaundice, which causes yellowing of the skin and eyes.

What diagnostic tools or tests do you recommend for assessing the severity of NAFLD or NASH in patients?

Dr. Nagpal: Several diagnostic tools are used to assess the severity of NAFLD or NASH. Liver function tests (LFTs) help monitor liver enzyme levels. Ultrasound can detect liver fat and fibrosis, while FibroScan is used to measure liver stiffness, which is indicative of fibrosis. MRI helps evaluate liver fat and inflammation. For a definitive diagnosis and staging, a liver biopsy may be required.

Can you elaborate on the link between fatty liver disease and metabolic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity?

Dr. Nagpal: The link between fatty liver disease and metabolic conditions lies in shared risk factors such as insulin resistance, obesity and physical inactivity. These conditions often involve common pathophysiological mechanisms, including inflammation, oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction which increase the risk of FLD and its progression.

Why do some patients develop FLD even without obesity, especially in India where 20% of non-obese individuals are affected?

Dr. Nagpal: Non-obese individuals can develop FLD due to genetic predispositions, such as familial NAFLD. In some cases, these individuals may have sarcopenic obesity, where there is low muscle mass despite excess body fat. Also, metabolic dysfunction, including insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, can occur independently of obesity and contribute to the development of FLD.

What are the current treatment strategies for managing NAFLD and NASH, given the absence of targeted drugs?

Dr. Nagpal: The current treatment strategies focus on lifestyle modifications such as improving diet, increasing physical activity and achieving weight loss. Managing comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia is also essential. Emerging therapies, including GLP-1 receptor agonists and FXR agonists, are being studied for their potential in treating NAFLD and NASH.

What lifestyle or dietary changes have proven most effective in reversing or managing fatty liver disease?

Dr. Nagpal: Adopting a Mediterranean diet, which emphasises whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats has proven effective in managing FLD. Increased physical activity, including aerobic exercise and strength training, also plays a key role. Weight loss of 5-10% of body weight can significantly improve liver health.

How can patient compliance with lifestyle modifications be improved in the context of fatty liver disease?

Dr. Nagpal: Patient compliance can be improved through education, where patients are made to understand the consequences of NAFLD. Personalized counselling and tailored lifestyle advice based on individual needs can further help. Regular follow-ups to monitor progress and adjust treatment strategies are also crucial for maintaining long-term compliance.

What are some India-specific challenges in diagnosing and managing fatty liver disease, given the different phenotypes in the Indian population?

Dr. Nagpal: One of the main challenges in India is the diverse range of phenotypes, which leads to varying clinical presentations and risk factors. There is also limited awareness of the disease among patients, healthcare providers, and the general public. Inadequate healthcare infrastructure in some regions also limits access to diagnostic and treatment facilities.

How can the InFLiMeN initiative help improve the understanding and management of metabolic liver diseases in India?

Dr. Nagpal: The Indo-French Liver and Metabolic Disease Network (InFLiMeN) aims to address key issues related to a common metabolic liver disorder, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease through research on NAFLD pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment. It also focuses on education, offering training to healthcare providers and patients, and fostering collaboration among researchers, clinicians and policymakers to address the growing burden of liver diseases in India.

  • I still drive a manual car – but does it actually make me a better driver? – Lana Andelane

I still drive a manual car – but does it actually make me a better driver? – Lana Andelane

Yet on my daily commute recently, I found myself wondering: it’s a common axiom that driving a manual “automatically” makes you a more competent driver, but is it actually true?

Now in my sixth year behind the wheel, it’s a question I’ve been pondering lately. Is my slightly aggressive driving style (my partner would say overly aggressive) and proclivity for bouts of road rage stemming from an underlying superiority complex? Do I actually believe, deep down, that I’m a better driver than many of my fellow motorists? (Last year over 74,000 people took their restricted test in an automatic, compared to just 10,661 in a manual).

If I’m being brutally honest (with myself and all of you lovely readers), perhaps slightly. I believe taking the time to learn manual does entitle you to a certain degree of driving distinction. While anyone can learn to drive an automatic or a manual, auto is known to be easier and for good reason: an electric car I reviewed last year even had “play” and “pause” symbols to differentiate the accelerator from the brake.

So how does this colloquial assumption stand up to an expert’s opinion? I put the question to Roger Venn, a road safety advocate and the general manager at the Automobile Association (AA) Driving School.

According to Venn, however, it’s a question that doesn’t have a straightforward answer.

‘Automatic transmissions can be less complicated’

While knowing how to drive a manual “doesn’t necessarily” make someone a better driver, manual motorists often feel more in control of the car than their auto counterparts, Venn said.

“Knowing how to drive a manual does not necessarily mean you’re a better driver than someone who drives automatic. There are a multitude of personal factors that determine a good driver; someone who follows the rules, looks out for hazards, limits distractions, etc, none of which are reliant on the transmission of the car,” Venn, a trustee for Students Against Dangerous Driving (SAAD), told the Herald.

“Some drivers enjoy changing gears and like the closer connection it gives them to their vehicle. Manual drivers can often feel more in control of their car by having the ability to choose the most appropriate gear for the situation, like when going up or down a hill,” he continued.

“Knowing how to drive a manual also means you can safely and comfortably drive all transmissions. Plus, if you’re a car enthusiast, knowing how to drive a manual means you can drive a lot of the classic cars.”

Ultimately, driving manual is a “complex multi-tasking skill which requires muscle memory to develop”, Venn added.

“We do encourage earlier lessons when driving a manual to be in a quiet location, such as an empty carpark, to get the basics down. When it comes time to learn on busier roads, the driver should be more confident in their actions while also being aware of their surroundings. We highly recommend lessons with a professional trainer who knows how to help this process along.”

While manual drivers will be able to get behind the wheel of an automatic vehicle without further training, the same can’t always be said for the reverse. For example, restricted licence holders who sat their test in an automatic are only allowed to drive automatic vehicles (unless a supervisor is present); those who sat their restricted test in a manual can drive either transmission. Only once a full licence has been obtained can drivers opt for either an automatic or a manual, regardless of the car they sat their test in.

“Drivers wishing to learn manual should be aware it may be harder to pick up compared to automatic, but that shouldn’t discourage them,” Venn said.

“The AA supports anyone learning how to drive in a manual car, however, automatic transmissions can be more convenient and less complicated to learn to drive. Regardless of which, learning how to drive safely and defensively on the road is key.”

In early 2022, data released to Newshub under the Official Information Act showed the number of Kiwis sitting their driver’s test in a manual car had plummeted compared to that of a decade earlier.

The data showed 12,086 people sat their restricted test in a manual between January and November 2021, as opposed to 33,396 – almost the triple amount – in 2011. Other findings included:

    • Nearly 66,000 people sat the test in an automatic in 2021; in 2011, that number was just over 26,000.
    • While 66,348 drivers sat their full licence test in a manual car in 2011, just 12,873 did so in 2021.
    • Auckland was recorded by the New Zealand Transport Agency as having the most people sit their restricted license in a manual, followed by the Canterbury and Waikato regions.

Separate data from 2023 showed just 10,661 people took the restricted test in a manual, while over 74,000 opted for an automatic.

    ‘Really not worth it’

The nosedive in manual uptake has been attributed to several reasons, including increased traffic and lengthy commutes – at least in the Auckland area, according to several residents who weighed in on the manual-versus-auto debate on Reddit.

“I drive a manual in Auckland … Hate it! Definitely not enjoyable, changing gears and being stuck in traffic after a tiring day at work. I would rather drive an auto,” one shared, with a second adding: “I’m a car person and love manual. Auckland traffic did my head in (or should I say, my leg in). Four years ago I swapped to a modern paddle shift car … it’s been the best of both worlds for me.”

“Manual is definitely more fun but not in Auckland. Too much stop-start-stop-start. You’ll be exhausted commuting from all the gear changes. Really not worth it. Also too many hills and bad SUV drivers not giving you enough space in case you roll back,” a third weighed in, while a fourth said: “Our traffic-burdened city is demanding as it is, without having to also concentrate on what it is to drive a manual.”

However, manual enthusiasts without the burden of daily traffic argued for the fading transmission, with one writing: “I have a manual, I love it, I hate driving automatic. But I also don’t have a huge stop-start commute, about 20-30 minutes in moderate to light traffic to get to work.”

“I’ve had both. Auckland is a fairly hilly region and also has lots of traffic as others have mentioned. I would recommend automatic as a primary car … what I also did was buy a cheap manual to have fun in during the weekends,” another suggested.

Venn has previously attributed the decline in manual test-sitters to the perception that the practical is “easier” in an auto, noting in 2022: “The easiest way to get your restricted and full is to do it in auto, so I get it. Whether that’s right is another matter.

“My personal view is that learning to drive in a manual gives you a better understanding of the car’s dynamics and the kinetic way a car works, and the mechanics of a car.”

He also cited a general scarcity of sticks in New Zealand; according to reports, less than 2% of new cars have a manual transmission, and at the time of writing, electric vehicles – an increasingly popular choice – are very rarely available in manual.

So with the end of the stick seemingly nigh upon us, do I and other members of the “Cult of Manual” still have a reason to feel high and mighty? Ultimately, that is a question that can only be answered on an individual level, but as the data suggests, our general approach to driving has shifted gears. Autos may be the more popular choice, but while manual cars are on the market, there is still an opportunity to learn a fading art.

Plus, it almost certainly will score you brownie points at some point in your day-to-day life: even the other week, I picked up a new friend for the first time, who exclaimed upon entering my car, “Wait, you drive manual? That is so sexy.”

It might not make me a better driver, but I certainly believe manual is still worth learning – even if just for the bragging rights.
