    Eating Almonds May Help Post-Exercise Recovery: Study

    Eating almonds regularly may help recover from exercise by reducing muscle fatigue and soreness, a new study has found. The findings, published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition, could promote greater adherence to physical training, a topic that warrants further investigation in future studies, researchers noted.

    The research team, which included scientists from San Diego State University in the US, studied 26 middle-aged adults who exercised one to four hours per week. For eight weeks, participants consumed either 60 grams of whole raw almonds or about 90 grams of unsalted pretzels daily. After eight weeks, participants underwent a 30-minute downhill treadmill run to induce muscle damage, immediately consuming their daily serving of almonds or pretzels afterward.

    The researchers measured perceived muscle soreness, muscle performance (through a muscle contraction test and vertical jump), and blood markers of muscle damage and inflammation, such as C-reactive proteins and creatine kinase.

    Measurements were taken before the treadmill run and at 24, 48, and 72 hours afterward, during which participants continued their daily intake of almonds or pretzels.

    During the recovery period– up to 72 hours after the treadmill run– the group consuming almonds showed lower levels of creatine kinase, indicating less muscle damage.

    Additionally, the almond group demonstrated better muscle performance at both 24 and 72 hours following the treadmill run.

    Pain levels in participants who ate almonds were found to be about 37% and 33% lower at 24 and 48 hours, respectively, compared to those consuming pretzels.

    “This study demonstrates that 2.0 (ounces per day) of almonds modestly reduces pain, better maintains muscle strength, and reduces the (creatine kinase) response to eccentric-based exercise,” the authors wrote.

    The results add to the growing body of evidence regarding almonds’ role in post-exercise recovery, they said.

    “Almonds contain a wide range of nutrients known to support exercise recovery, including protein, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. These nutrients are provided in a whole food package, as opposed to isolated vitamin supplements, which may explain the benefits observed in this study,” said Mark Kern, a professor of exercise and nutritional sciences at San Diego State University.

    One ounce (28 grams) of almonds provides 6 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, 13 grams of unsaturated fat, 1 gram of saturated fat, and 15 essential nutrients-including 77 milligrams of magnesium, 210 milligrams of potassium, and 7.27 milligrams of vitamin E.

    “More research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind how almonds improve exercise recovery. Strategies to improve exercise recovery are important because if you are recovering better, you are likely to be able to train sooner — or harder — for subsequent workouts,” Kern added.

    The study’s participants were either of healthy weight or mildly overweight (with a body mass index or BMI between 23-30).

She recalled, “When it came to meal time, the 8 of them sat around a nicely set table and chowed down without making eye contact with us while we stood on the outside of the table chatting. I thought this was so weird, my ex did not, I guess? It was awkward because we were actually starving!”

Well, my ex was so bothered by this reaction from me, it ruined the whole evening for him and we actually broke up after that (he broke up with me).”

    She further added, “He had originally said we would just eat together at the street festival so I was bothered that he put me in that position and then was mad at me for choosing not to eat and grabbing a snack on the street?”

And that can mean anything from an upset stomach to full-blown food poisoning for those who indulge.”

    1. Khoye ki Barfi

    Most festive mithais are made with khoya, but here’s a heads-up: it’s one of the most commonly adulterated ingredients in sweets. Word on the street is that some shady sellers might bulk up khoya by adding wheat or rice flour (starch) to increase its quantity. So, even if you’re planning to whip up a mithai with khoya, make sure you’re checking its purity. It could save your dessert from being more starch than sweet.

    According to Dr Saurabh Arora, Director of Auriga Research and Arbro Pharmaceuticals, “Most people buy sweets and snacks that look delicious, which is why many vendors add bright colours – sometimes even non-approved ones – to make them more appealing. These artificial colours are often cheaper, last longer, and give sweets like ladoos a vivid appearance.” He advises consumers to be cautious when buying festive treats and to trust only reliable sellers, especially with sweets like motichoor ladoo, where quality can make all the difference.

    3. Kaju Katli

    Kaju katli features a silver varq that enhances the appeal of this popular traditional mithai. According to Indian regulations, any silver used as a food ingredient must be 99.9 percent pure. However, due to the high cost of silver, some vendors may use aluminium foils that merely resemble silver varq. To avoid the potentially harmful effects of these counterfeit substances, it’s a good idea to make kaju katli at home.

    Lions and leopards may look sleek and well-fed, but never obese. Hyenas and wild dogs maintain a healthy body weight in their natural state.

    But, this ability to maintain a healthy weight is not shared by many domesticated dogs and cats.

    Why is this? It boils down to whether the animals are eating and behaving in ways for which they were designed.

    Herbivores, like zebras, giraffes, and impala, eat plants.

    Lions, leopards, hyenas and wild dogs are carnivores. Only three of the 1,3 million animal species on this planet regularly have obesity issues – dogs, cats and humans – and only when they eat highly processed food.

    Professor Barbara Rolls, a nutrition scientist at Pen State University, introduced the concept of the energy density of food.

    Highly processed foods like chips, breakfast cereals, white bread, cakes, sugar-sweetened beverages and oil, weight for weight compared to whole foods, contain dramatically higher levels of kilojoules.

    Most people eat the same volume of food at meals. Eating whole foods, with much lower kilojoules, allows our body to better control energy intake. Natural foods also are much richer in vital nutrients than ultra-processed foods.

    The least energy-dense foods, yet highly nutritious foods, are salads and vegetables and fruit, with between 50-200 kJ per 100 gms.

    Boiled potatoes, beans and whole grains have around 300-500 kJ.

    Contrast this with meat at around 600-1200kJ, white bread and cheese, pizza at 1000kJ, chips at 2000kJ, chocolate at 2200kJ, and butter and oil at 3300kJ/100gm.

    Plant foods in their natural state are high in water and fibre (no kilojoules), which increase the feeling of fullness after a meal.

    We can learn from our wild animal friends that eating the natural foods for which we were designed is the best way of maintaining a healthy weight.

    A new study has found incredible weight loss and health benefits from including more legumes (beans in particular) in your daily diet. The study found that consuming two servings of beans daily is “significantly associated” with a lower BMI, reduced body weight, and a slimmer waistline. The researchers found these positive results after incorporating pinto beans, chickpeas, black beans, and kidney beans into the diets of the study participants. The findings of the study were published in the Nutrition Journal.

    For the study, participants were divided into five groups based on their total bean consumption. Group 1 consumed the most beans, while Group 5 rarely incorporated legumes into their meals. Pinto beans, chickpeas, black beans, and kidney beans were the preferred choices. Soybeans were excluded.

    The middle group had the lowest calorie contribution from beans. Group 1 reported an increased vegetable intake, while Group 4 consumed the most sweets and snacks. The researchers found that participants in Groups 1 and 2 had significantly lower body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and body weight values.

    Apart from the weight loss benefits, the researchers also highlighted that regular bean eaters enjoy a higher quality diet packed with essential nutrients compared to those who do not eat beans. According to researchers, people who eat beans regularly also tend to adopt an overall healthier eating pattern, which reduces their chances of developing health problems like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

    Tips To Add More Beans To Your Diet:

    Here are some tips to incorporate more beans into your diet:

    1. Add Beans To At Least One Meal

    Start small by incorporating beans into at least one meal every day. You can eat baked beans for breakfast, cook the beans into a gravy dish for lunch, or make a wrap for dinner. If nothing works, start by adding beans to salads or eating them as snacks.

    2. Include Beans In Salads

    Boil chickpeas or kidney beans and add them to your daily salad with lettuce, chopped tomato, cucumber, and carrots. Drizzle some lemon juice and enjoy.

    Simply dry roast some chickpeas until crunchy. You can coat them in masala or eat them directly for a healthy and satisfying snack.

    In the Facebook video, we see a Zomato delivery agent seated on a bike, apparently waiting for a signal to turn green.
