    Shepherd’s historic women’s soccer season ends in the Elite Eight | Journal-news

    RIDGE, N.H. — The Shepherd University women’s soccer team’s historic 2024 season ended in an Elite Eight matchup with Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon.

    Sophomore midfielder Jenni Huttunen led the Ravens to a 2-1 victory with two goals in the second half, one of which was a penalty kick.

    Junior midfielder Josie Beezel scored the Rams’ lone goal in the final eight minutes of play on an assist from sophomore midfielder Reagan Ackermann.

    By the final whistle Franklin Pierce had outshot Shepherd 16-8 however, the Rams outshot the Ravens 5-4 on goal.

    “We played fantastically today, I think by all accounts we were the better team,” Shepherd head coach Sam Odell told Shepherd University Athletics.

    “We dominated chances, territory, hit the bar twice, and had a couple cleared off the line, but it wasn’t our day.

    I couldn’t be prouder of the team and their accomplishments this season. This is not the way we wanted the story to end, and it’s especially tough for it to be in this manner – sometimes you just wish that you were second best as it can be easier to accept when that happened, but that was not the case today.

    We had a really good chance of winning the national championship this year and are devastated to be going out in the Elite Eight. That speaks volumes for the team’s goals and standards this season. This year we won all three trophies available, won 18 games, and have become a force on the Division II stage.

    We will be back here next year, and knowing this amazing group as well as anyone, they will use this experience as fuel to win the national championship next year.

    I am a proud and disappointed coach at the same time today, but I love this team and couldn’t be prouder of them for how they played today and all season. We have an amazing group that has a special collective quality which is so powerful when they channel it. We will be back.” Odell concluded.

    The Rams may have seen their historic season end in heartbreak, but their journey will be remembered as a turning point for the program.

    With a record-breaking 18-2-4 season, their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship and a spot in the Elite Eight, the Rams solidified their place as a rising power in Division II soccer.

    This season was not just about victories but about setting a new standard for what Shepherd women’s soccer can achieve.

    With a core of talented players and a coach who believes in their potential, the Rams are already looking ahead. Shepherd has proven their unwavering grit, determination and ability to come together as a cohesive unit as they are set to come back stronger next year with hopes of turning their national championship dreams into a reality.

    Riverbend’s deepest-ever run through the football playoffs came to an end Friday with a 32-15 loss to visiting Briar Woods in the Region 5D championship game.

    “It’s tough,” said first-year head coach Ed Webb. “That’s a heck of a football team. They’ve got a lot of guys that are going on to play D1 college football, and I’ve got a lot of tough guys.”

    Webb said most people had expected the Bears to finish near the bottom of the district standings, not in the regional final.

    “Nobody had us picked to go this far at the beginning of the year,” he said. “This group of seniors, they’re tough kids. Like I just told them, they’ve set the standard, hopefully,” for what Riverbend football can be in the future.

    Friday’s game seemed to favor Briar Woods at the start. Riverbend went three-and-out on the first possession, and the Falcons marched steadily down the field.

    Quarterback Brady Carmical, the Potomac District offensive player of the year who is committed to play at Navy next season, scored from 4 yards out to give the Falcons the lead.

    The Bears were soon forced to punt again, and again the Falcons moved the ball down into the red zone without much trouble.

    This time, though, Riverbend was able to stop the drive at the 14-yard line and take over on downs. The Bears brought the ball back up the field and scoring when JoJo Thomas ran right and tossed the ball to Tristan Greene for the touchdown to tie the game.

    But Briar Woods wasn’t done.

    Carmical scored on a 1-yard run with 2 minutes to go, and, after the Falcons forced a quick punt to get the ball back deep in their own end, threw deep to Colin Capistrant for a 66-yard connection, setting up a 25-yard Matthew Kordes field goal to give the team a 16-7 lead at the half.

    Running back Trey Dudley scored again for the Falcons in the third quarter, but Camden Simmons hit Mekhi Davis on a 44-yard touchdown pass to keep Riverbend’s hopes alive.

    It wasn’t to be for the Bears, however. Dudley scored again from 2 yards out, and a Jax McIntosh interception finished things off.

    Dudley finished the day with 75 yards rushing, two touchdowns and one acrobatic 27-yard reception. Carmical completed 13 of 19 passes for 219 yards to go with his 51 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

    JoJo Thomas led the rushing attack for Riverbend with 59 yards, but the Bears scored both of their touchdowns through the air, unusual for the run-heavy offense.

    Of course, that was no accident.

    “Stopping their run game like that was our emphasis all week,” said Briar Woods coach Michael Burnett. “We gave up a few passes, and I probably expected that the way we committed to stopping their run. But we felt like that was our best chance, and our kids we’re real tough at the point of attack, and we’re real proud of them.”

    The Falcons head next for the state semifinal December 7 against the winner of Friday night’s game between L.C. Byrd and William Fleming.

    Burnett wasn’t making any blustery predictions, but he thinks his team has a chance to keep moving toward the state title.

    “Today really was the first time we’ve had all our kids back healthy, really all season, and it was so fun to watch,” he said. “I think we play well as a team, and if you do that, it always gives you a chance.”

    For Riverbend, Webb sees a foundation that has been laid for some good years ahead.

    “The young guys, now they know what the work looks like,” he said. “They know what the practice looks like. They know my expectations. I came in late, like the rest of my staff. We were still putting things together a week before practice started.”

    The coaching staff also pointed to the bigger picture in their final post-game remarks to the players.

    The loss hurts, they told the team, but as they become adults, they’ll reap the benefits in other aspects of their lives of all the hard work they put in throughout the season.

    “It’s something we’ve been harping on all year,” Webb said. “If all we’re doing is coaching the X’s and O’s and how to execute a block or make a tackle, we’re not doing our job here.”

    LeRoy ends memorable football season with semifinal loss | Sports

    LEROY — The stars seemed to be aligning for the LeRoy football team.

    An undefeated regular season with three generations of Zelezniks contributing to the team in the 125th year of the program? Yeah, something special was bound to happen.

    “I couldn’t ask for anything greater,” senior wide receiver/linebacker Landon Welte said. “Everyone was committed, and everyone loved each other. There was no selfishness. No one was too big for the moment. It was one family, and that’s all you can wish for. I’m beyond proud of everybody.”

    The Panthers rode that wave, backed by endless community support, all the way to Saturday’s Class 1A state semifinals, where they ultimately fell 42-13 to Lena-Winslow.

    “It hurts less than you think when you know you played the absolute hardest you could have,” senior quarterback/linebacker Bo Zeleznik said. “It’s an indescribable feeling because you’re one of the lucky few who get to experience it, but you also have it taken away from you. The duality of that is hard to comprehend at times, but I’m extremely thankful for everything I’ve gotten to do here. It’s been the best time of my life.”

    It was a battle of the Panthers and a battle of two extremely run-heavy teams. The big difference: Lena-Winslow had all the recent success. LeRoy (12-1) was looking for its first state championship appearance since 2003, which would have potentially led to its first title since 1996. Meanwhile, Lena-Winslow (13-0) had won six titles since 2010 and was the 1A runner-up just last year.

    LeRoy stayed within striking distance through the first half, going into the halftime break down 16-7 after catching Lena-Winslow’s defense off guard with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Bo Zeleznik to Braeden Fox. It was only the team’s ninth pass attempt of the season, and it was the fifth to reach the end zone.

    In the second half, however, Lena-Winslow was simply too much to handle, scoring every time it got the ball and holding LeRoy’s offense in check. The backfield duo of Aiden Wild and Alec Schlichting were all but unstoppable. Wild rushed for three touchdowns, two from more than 40 yards out, and Schlichting’s day was highlighted by a 76-yard sprint away from the defense. Koby Kearns also ran for a score, and Jayken Rakowska returned an interception 54 yards to the house.

    Sam Wagner was able to break loose for a 78-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give LeRoy one last score, but Lena-Winslow effectively beat LeRoy at its own game.

    “I thought we were incredibly physical, but it takes more than that. They were incredibly physical, and their level of execution was incredible,” LeRoy coach BJ Zeleznik said. “There were only a few times we missed assignments, but when we missed them, it was critical, and they capitalized. … Mentality is a big part of that, too. You couple a tremendous speed and strength program with a belief in what you’re doing and excellent technical ability, you get quite a program.”

    Still, with just a few minutes left on the clock and the outcome already determined, the LeRoy players were enjoying the little time they had left at L.A. McKean Field. With every defensive stop, they’d be at the bottom of the pile, hooting and hollering louder than they had all day. Bo led the defensive effort with 14 tackles, followed by Tate Sigler with 11 and Kobe Brent with 10.

    “You have got to love this game if you want to be good at it. You can’t fake it,” BJ said. “The courage, the hard work and the physical and emotional pain you have to deal with to play this game — there are so many things about this game where you can’t be a pretender. Teams that get to this level understand those sacrifices. At the end, that was an example of ‘We’ve got six minutes left to play football. Ever.’ Super proud of them. No quit.”

    This class of 18 seniors didn’t have the best start to their high school careers. Or their youth athletic careers, for that matter. There wasn’t a lot of success, and BJ didn’t know what to expect when they joined his team. The Panthers went 3-6 in 2021 and 2022, but the players bought in to a new offensive system and turned the program around. That’s the legacy they’ll leave behind at LeRoy.

    “I am extremely, extremely proud of my classmates for making a decision to change things,” Bo said. “It’s apparent now that the system works, the coaching works and what you’re being told to do works. It’s if the kids are going to make the decision to do something hard and step out of their comfort zone. That’s what we did, and that’s why we got to experience success.”

    At the end of the day, no, LeRoy didn’t reach the pinnacle of Illinois high school football, but it did have the most successful and most promising season in over two decades.

    “It’s still a great feeling knowing how far we made it,” Welte said. “Obviously, we all wish we could have gotten that trophy into the glass, but it’s something that ten years from now, whatever we’re doing, we can look back and say ‘If we work hard, we can do what we want to do.’ The hard work really showed that success can come.”

    After BJ addressed his team one last time, he broke down the huddle with a “We are,” answered by the players with “LeRoy.” He then stepped away to do a few TV interviews while the players hugged it out for 30 minutes.

    When he came back, BJ embraced Bo for a lengthy, emotional hug. He said his heart ached for his son to not have the opportunity to play for a championship, having experienced that with his own father, Jim.

    And Bo, he was holding back tears the whole time, but he went about the moment with the same positive maturity he has all season.

    “I know he’s proud of me,” Bo said. “I’m extremely thankful for everything he’s done for me and everyone else he’s helped. It sucks that that’s the last time he’s going to coach me on the field, but that’s not the last time he’s going to coach me in life. We’re going to be going through all the next chapters together, too.”

    AP Top 25: Indiana gives Big Ten 4 of first 5 as Georgia’s top-10 streak ends

    Ohio State moved up to No. 2 behind Oregon in the AP Top 25 on Sunday, and the Big Ten captured four of the top five spots with Penn State moving to No. 4 and Indiana to No. 5. According to the AP, it’s the first time the Big Ten has had four of the top five.

    It’s the first time the Big Ten has held the top two spots in the rankings since 2015, and it’s Indiana’s highest ranking since 1967. Room was created by a pair of top-five losses, as Georgia dropped from second to No. 11 after losing to Ole Miss and Miami fell from fourth to No. 12 after losing at Georgia Tech. It’s Georgia’s lowest spot in the poll since 2020, ending a 60-week streak of top-10 appearances.

    The top-ranked Ducks are a unanimous No. 1 for the second straight week, making them the first team to be unanimous No. 1 for multiple weeks of a regular season since Georgia did it eight times in 2021.

    The Big Ten holds the top two spots for the first time since Ohio State and Michigan State were atop the poll on Sept. 27, 2015. That was the second of consecutive weeks with the Buckeyes and Spartans at Nos. 1 and 2.

    Georgia dropping gives Ohio State the longest streak of top-10 appearances at 55, though that could actually be considered an 80-week streak. The Buckeyes were not eligible to be in the poll early in the 2020 pandemic-altered season while the Big Ten was not playing. Georgia dropped to as low as No. 13 in 2020 and spent most of the second half of that season outside the top 10 before finishing seventh. Georgia had not been ranked lower than sixth in each of the past three seasons and started 2024 as preseason No. 1 for the second consecutive year.

    The only non-Big Ten team in the top five is No. 3 Texas. Tennessee is up a spot to No. 6, and No. 7 BYU and No. 8 Notre Dame each moved up two places.

    Alabama is No. 9 after blowing out LSU, and Ole Miss moved up six spots to No. 10.

    Is Penn State properly ranked?

    No. 4 Penn State is becoming one of the most polarizing teams in the country because of its rankings in both the AP and coaches poll and by the College Football Playoff selection committee, especially for those who are stumping for unbeaten Indiana and BYU.

    Is that fair?

    The argument goes that Penn State is getting a helmet bump as a big-brand school over less traditional powers, especially Big Ten conference-mate Indiana. It’s a fair take: Penn State has no victories against teams in the rankings and a seven-point loss at home to Ohio State.

    Indiana has taken a lot of flak for its less-than-formidable schedule while romping through its opponents with nothing but double-digit victories until Saturday against Michigan. The Hoosiers’ schedule strength is still lagging behind the rest of the highly ranked teams.

    The better case might be BYU, which stayed unbeaten in dramatic fashion against Utah and has a couple of victories against ranked teams in Big 12 rival No. 20 Kansas State and No. 14 SMU, the first-place team in the ACC.

    You can make a fair case that either or both the Hoosiers and Cougars should be ahead of Penn State — and maybe even Texas and/or Tennessee.

    But allow me to play devil’s advocate: If the difference between Penn State, Indiana and BYU is one of these teams played Ohio State and the other two did not, is it really that egregious to have the Nittany Lions ranked highest? Penn State is not the only team impacted by this, but there is a tendency to put all teams into two buckets: ranked teams and bad teams, basically lumping everybody outside the Top 25 in the same grouping. It’s a poor evaluation. There are 134 FBS schools and another 129 more in FCS and each has a value.

    It’s also not just about who you played, but how you played, and while Indiana has gotten a lot of attention for running roughshod over its opponents, Penn State has six victories of at least 14 points, too, after Saturday’s 35-6 thumping of Washington.

    After a second consecutive loss, this time at home to Virginia, Pitt is out of the rankings for the first time in six weeks. The Panthers started the season 7-0 but didn’t quite have the staying power of the turnarounds at Indiana and BYU. Iowa State faced a similar fate, going from unbeaten and ranked to out of the poll after consecutive losses. The Cyclones lost to Kansas on Saturday.

    Vanderbilt also slipped out of the Top 25 again after losing to SEC rival South Carolina, which is making its season debut at No. 23. The Gamecocks (6-3) are ranked for the first time since 2022 and have one of the country’s most what-could-have-been seasons. Losses to Alabama and LSU by a combined five points, along with a blowout loss to Ole Miss, kept the Gamecocks out of SEC championship and playoff contention. The LSU game was especially painful because of a blindside block penalty that wiped out a pick six.

    No. 24 Missouri (7-2) returned to the rankings after the Tigers stayed in the “Playoff hunt,” according to coach Eli Drinkwitz. The SEC has nine teams ranked this week, one short of the record of 10 it set early in the 2015 season.

    No. 25 Tulane (8-2) is ranked for the first time this season, joining No. 13 Boise State and No. 16 Army as teams from Group of 5 conferences in the rankings in the pursuit of an automatic Playoff bid.

The loss to Kentucky still hurts and LSU is getting worse, but the Rebels dominated Georgia 28-10 for their most lopsided win against an AP top-10 team since 1969. Throw in the increased value of their 24-point win against South Carolina and the fact that they lead the FBS in yards per play margin, and the Rebels finally feel like they’ve earned their top-10 billing. I didn’t hesitate to jump them to No. 9 on my ballot — actually a spot ahead of where they are in the poll.

    • Am I too high on Indiana? Possibly, but who would have thought we’d be parsing a Hoosiers win over Michigan for being too unimpressive? No, the Hoosiers haven’t played a ranked team yet, but they’re 10-0 and they dominated each of their first nine opponents. I have them at No. 3, ahead of one-loss teams like Texas (no ranked wins), Tennessee (lost to Arkansas) and Penn State (no ranked wins), and they’ve been more impressive from week to week than fellow surprise unbeaten BYU. Ultimately, the margin feels very tight from No. 1 to No. 15 — perhaps the tightest since I became a voter in 2017 — and thus I have no problem rewarding the teams that just keep winning … and being swift to penalize a loss, like dropping Miami to 13th after it fell at Georgia Tech.

    • Only 30 teams received votes this week, and Tulane moved into the rankings at No. 25.     How Week 12 will impact the rankings

    There are two ranked matchups next Saturday, both in the SEC:

    • No. 6 Tennessee at No. 11 Georgia: The Vols have a chance to do the unthinkable and all but eliminate Georgia from the 12-team Playoff. But they haven’t stayed within single digits or scored more than 21 points against the Bulldogs since 2016.

    • No. 24 Missouri at No. 23 South Carolina. Nine of 16 SEC teams are ranked, though the loser here is likely to fall out.

    The top four will all by heavy favorites on the road — No. 1 Oregon at Wisconsin, No. 2 Ohio State at Northwestern, No. 3 Texas at Arkansas and No. 4 Penn State at Purdue — while No. 5 Indiana is off before its showdown with the Buckeyes.

    Eagles’ football season ends on cold night in Maple Grove

    With snowbanks surrounding the sidelines, autumn seemed to give way to winter in Maple Grove on Friday night, where the Eden Prairie Eagles’ season ended in a cold finality as November winds swept through football fields across Minnesota.

    “It just goes to show how quick stuff can go,” Eagles defensive back and captain Max Kukla said. “It’s senior year, it’s the last football game I’ll ever play. So I’m just gonna try to take that into the lacrosse season the rest of the school year.”

    Eden Prairie collided with a seemingly unstoppable offense in top-ranked and undefeated Maple Grove, which ended the Eagles’ season in a lopsided 34-0 decision in the second-round playoff clash.

    Crimson running back Charles Langama looked unstoppable at times, rushing for 118 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns.

    His first touchdown came on a 28-yard run in which he reversed field from one sideline to the other before finding the endzone, capping off a 10-play, 94-yard drive to give Maple Grove a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

    “He’s very good,” senior linebacker and captain James Anderson said. “It took more than one guy to take him down every time. He’s a great running back.”

    It was difficult for the Eagles, winners of four straight games heading into the contest, to keep up with the Crimson’s high-powered scoring attack.

    Maple Grove amassed 337 total yards of offense – 226 on the ground – while sustaining drives by converting on seven-of-11 third downs and two-of-two fourth-down situations.

    Eden Prairie was unable to capitalize on opportunities in the first half, which only compounded their ineffectiveness on a frustrating night.

    Eagles head coach Mike Grant said his team needed to play a near-perfect game to put themselves in a position to win. 

    That didn’t happen on this frigid Friday night.

    “For us to beat them, we had to catch the interception on the first drive,” Grant said, recapping a number of missed opportunities. “They fumbled a snap and recovered it. We hit their quarterback (Kaden Harney) hard, and he just threw the ball up in the air and their kid caught it for a first down.

    “All those things had to go our way in order to beat them and to keep it close at half.”

    The Eagles offense put up 224 total yards, all but 40 on the ground. They were led by senior running back and captain Elijah Rumph, who rushed for 94 yards on 16 carries.

    “We moved the ball pretty well in the second half,” Grant said. “You just can’t make those mistakes. We’ve been on the other side of this, where you can’t make those mistakes against us and we can’t make those against them.” 

    Defensively, the Eagles were led by seniors Matthew Ivey and Vaughn Feely, each with six tackles.

    But the Eden Prairie defense struggled to get off the field on third down, leaving the door open for Langama to churn up yardage. The Crimson also threw the ball effectively as Harney completed seven-of-14 passes for 111 yards.

    “Maple Grove is a great team. I hope they have a good season,” Ivey, a captain, said afterward. 

    Maple Grove’s offensive line is composed entirely of seniors, an advantage the Eagles did not have this season with a young front. But Grant is optimistic for the group entering next season with experience to compete in Eden Prairie’s always-demanding schedule.

    “They have big, physical kids. And that’s the difference,” Grant said. “We start almost all juniors in our offensive line, and it’s just that physicality of that year just makes a difference. And next year, we’ll have that veteran senior offensive line that we can impose our will on, and kind of like they’ve imposed their will on us tonight.”

    With their victory over the Eagles, Maple Grove (10-0) will move on to face Edina in the state quarterfinals on a neutral site at Park Center High School on Thursday.

    Eden Prairie, a program accustomed to closing out its seasons indoors at U.S. Bank Stadium, finishes the 2024 campaign with a 6-4 record and looks ahead to 2025.

    Grant wraps up his 32nd season at Eden Prairie, a career that includes 16 playoff appearances and 11 state championships. The head coach expressed admiration for his latest team, citing their determination throughout the season.

    “I’m just proud of them, because they played so hard all year, through the ups and downs,” Grant said. “And tonight, they played hard right till the end, and that’s all we can ask from them.”

    And for the seniors, many remained on the cold field in Maple Grove to stretch their season out a bit longer, expressing gratitude for teammates and memories to last a lifetime.

    “Just all the lessons I learned from all the guys, about hard work, about leadership,” Ivey said. “Football, it’s a game, but it’s more than a game. It’s the opportunity to work hard and to work as a team towards something, and it means something more than just a game.”

    MrBeast probe ends with some employees fired but finds no proof of sexual misconduct allegations

    NEW YORK — Online video production company MrBeast said Friday it has fired somewhere between 5 to 10 employees following an investigation into the YouTube empire’s workplace culture.

    A company spokesman declined to put a precise number on the firings, say which employees were let go or for what reasons. But the shakeup comes as Jimmy Donaldson, who draws millions of views under the MrBeast alias with highly produced stunts and giveaways, deals with accusations of impropriety against himself, his collaborators and others within his multimillion-dollar production company that have threatened his family-friendly image.

    Investigators only identified “several isolated instances of workplace harassment and misconduct,” according to a two-page letter sent Friday by Alex Spiro, a trial lawyer who led the investigation by white-shoe law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan and whose clients have included Jay-Z and Elon Musk.

    The nearly three-month probe concluded that there was no basis behind allegations that MrBeast team members committed sexual misconduct or “knowingly” employed people with “proclivities or histories towards illegal or questionable legal conduct.”

    Spiro said the team interviewed 39 current and former employees. Millions of documents from phones, emails, and messaging platforms including Discord and Slack were also reviewed, according to the letter.

    The controversies surrounding the so-called King of YouTube began snowballing this summer. Ava Tyson, a Donaldson friend and fellow creator accused of sharing inappropriate sexual messages with minors over multiple years, left the channel in July. Also circulated online by YouTuber Rosanna Pansino was a 2017 recording of Donaldson making racist comments and using homophobic slurs.

    A preliminary July shoot for his ambitious “Beast Games” Amazon Prime Video show was quickly hit with safety complaints from some contestants who said they faced “limited sustenance” and “insufficient medical staffing” while competing for a $5 million grand prize.

    MrBeast in turn has hired new executives, including a head of personnel and a general counsel, according to Spiro, and additional employees are getting “targeted training and executive coaching” for undisclosed violations of company policy.

    The company “has grown exceedingly quickly from a YouTube start-up comprised of a group of talented young individuals to a much larger entity,” Spiro wrote to MrBeast’s Board of Directors. “It is not uncommon that policies and practices essential in a mature company would lag behind commercial success.”

    Donaldson has largely remained silent on the matters. He recently launched a prepacked lunch brand alongside internet personalities Logan Paul and KSI — marking his latest entrance into the food market after his chocolate bar and burger chain were met with mixed reviews. His 325 million YouTube subscribers have continued to see their feeds filled with outlandish, high-energy videos like the recently titled “100 Identical Twins Fight For $250,000.”

    In a Friday post on X sharing Spiro’s letter, Donaldson wrote that he “was asked to refrain from making public statements to enable a detailed and unbiased investigation.”

    Pansino, one of Donaldson’s most vocal critics, responded on X that the findings of “workplace harassment and misconduct” and “multiple firings” mean “it might be time for a bigger investigation.”

    Donaldson’s level of fame and growth place him in “pretty rare company,” said advertising lawyer Robert Freund, whose practice helps creators resolve disputes. He said he suspects the letter was released in attempt to assure stakeholders “that he’s running a professional operation.”

    “I don’t see anything fishy or suspicious about what we’ve been presented with here as the public,” Freund told The Associated Press.

    The past weekend witnessed the final curtain drawn on the boys of summer, just as autumn triggered the commencement of football’s premier competition.

    *St George’s and Willow Cuts seize finals silverware*

    In cricket St George’s Cricket Club completed the ‘double’, as they captured the Premier Division T20 Knock-Out title, to go along with the earlier won Athene Premier Division 50 Overs league championship.

    Captain Onias Bascome spurred the east enders to victory over Cleveland County with an unbeaten knock of 64 runs, as his squad made a successful chase of the established target of 144.
    Cleveland had earlier managed 143 in their 20-over allotment, largely on the tails of a Dion Stoverll half-century.

    St George’s passed the score having lost just four wickets.

    The First Division version of the competition featured Willow Cuts and Flatts, with the result coming down in favour of the former.
    Cuts established a mark of 148 for six, as Charles Trott scored 62.

    Flatts were then bundled out for just 98, well short of the required runs.
    In all cricket’s list of champions also included Warwick Workmen’s Club (First Division 50 overs league champions), St David’s (First Division T20 league champions), Willow Cuts (Western Counties champions), Devonshire Rec., (Central Counties champions), Bailey’s Bay (Eastern Counties and Premier Division T20 league champions), Hamilton Parish Hurricanes (Bermuda Smash Invitational champions) and Somerset Cricket Club (Cup Match champions).

     

    *PHC begin defence of football’s Premier Division title*

    PHC made a successful start to their defence of football’s Premier Division, as they defeated Paget 4-2 at Southampton Oval.

    The PHC Zebras started their title defence with a 4 – 2 victory over the Paget Lions at the Southampton Oval.

    Haile Eve, Jahiem Iris and De-Andre Wainwright each scored first-half goals, allowing the champs a 3 – 0 half-time lead.
    This was cut to 3-2 two by the home side, who notched replies through Diaje Hart and Tristen Davis, before Jenico Sealey wrapped up matters in favour of PHC with a tally 15 minutes from time.

    Other matches saw Devonshire Cougars draw 1-1 with St George’s Colts, while Dandy Town hammered division newcomers Wolves 4-1.
    In First Division league play Robin Hood got the better of BAA 3-0, Boulevard Blazers downed Somerset Eagles 2-1 and St David’s brushed aside Vasco 3-1.
