    A high-flying international lawyer whose firm ‘put Australian corporations on notice’ about a potential wave of class action lawsuits against miners and financial services companies has suddenly quit his post. 

    International class action specialists Pogust Goodhead set up shop in Australia last year and issued a warning that they were eyeing a series of business giants and planning to hold them to account over their responsibility to exhibit ‘basic decency and fairness’. 

    But the firm was this week hit with the surprise departure of jetsetting co-founder and global chairman Harris Pogust, who announced he was stepping down from his role after six years in order to ‘devote more time and energy to my philanthropic endeavours’. 

    In a statement this week, Mr Pogust wished his co-founder Mr Goodhead all the best and praised the firm for having ‘helped defend the rights of those who cannot defend themselves against the misdeeds of big business’. 

    Pogust Goodhead is currently taking action against BHP in the UK over the Samarco mine disaster in Brazil, which cost 19 people their lives and contaminated waterways and land spanning multiple villages in a case tipped to be worth up to $70billion in damages. 

    Last month, the class action specialist firm also shed up to 20 per cent of its staff – with jobs shed at its offices in both the UK and Brazil, the UK’s Law Society Gazette reported. 

    The New Jersey-born Mr Pogust has more than 25 years’ experience in litigation and class actions. Daily Mail Australia revealed an insight into Mr Pogust’s lavish lifestyle earlier this year.

    Photographs show the crusading lawyer and his wife Carrie flying by private jet – including with their dog – sipping cocktails on luxury boats and travelling interstate for meals.

    In November 2023, he shared details of his new property – a sprawling six-bedroom, eight-bathroom mansion boasting a pool, gym and wine cellar. A month prior he shared another photo of his laptop overlooking the ocean.

    ‘Nothing like flying down for dinner than back home. The fun never ends…’ he wrote, tagging his location at Philadelphia International Airport.

    His wife has also shared photos of both Mr Pogust and the couple’s dog on a private jet, as well as luxurious snaps on yachts.

    His firm, Pogust Goodhead, launched in 2018 and earned the title ‘the first legal unicorn’ after raising $300million in financial backing early on.

    Co-founder Tom Goodhead visited Australia twice in 2023 to meet with MPs, unions and super funds over potential litigation. The firm set up an office in Sydney, headed by commercial disputes specialist Amie Crichton.

    Ms Crichton cut her teeth on the other side of litigation, defending class actions on behalf of insurers for eight years. Speaking to law.com, she said that experience gives her a strategic advantage in prosecuting future class actions.

    She said it had given her a much deeper understanding of how corporations seek to defend such matters – and how to counter that.

    ‘We are investigating a number of new cases against Australian multinational corporations, such as BHP, in which their commitment to this responsibility has been seriously thrown into question,’ said Mr Goodhead.

    ‘With the launch of our Sydney office, we are putting Australian corporations on notice that we are ready to hold them to account.

    ‘We are establishing a base in BHP’s backyard to ensure we explore every avenue in our fight for justice for victims.’

    The legal eagles said areas they’re targeting include the mining and resources sector, human rights issues, corporate misconduct, environmental issues and consumer law. 

    ‘Specialists in the class action sector are becoming a little bit more creative and willing to attempt to find recourse through different channels,’ she said. 

    Mr Goodhead, who is both Oxford and Cambridge educated, spoke in February about the expansion and their current litigation portfolio.

    He said winning one or more of the major litigations would see his team become ‘the highest-paid lawyers in the country by quiet some margin’.

    And several months earlier in an interview with the Law Gazette in November 2023, Mr Goodhead spoke openly about his company’s capitalist ambitions.

    ‘We are here to make a profit,’ he said bluntly.

    ‘This isn’t an NGO though I know we look like one. We are here to make a profit… I’ve got trainee solicitors earning 150k.’

    Data released today by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) shows that in the three months ending September 2024, there were 1,400 lifestyle property sales, an increase of 45 sales or 3.3% compared to the previous three months. This represents an 11.8% rise from 1,252 sales during the same period in 2023.

    Over the year leading up to September 2024, 5,699 lifestyle properties were sold, 234 more than the year ending September 2023, marking a 4.3% increase. The total sales value of these properties sold was $6.34 billion.

    The median price for all lifestyle properties sold in the three months leading up to September 2024 was $945,000, an increase of $35,000 compared to the same period in 2023, or 3.8%. The median price for Bareland lifestyle properties was $450,000, a slight increase of $500 or 0.1% compared to 2023.

    Similarly, for Farmlet lifestyle properties, the median price in the three months leading up to September 2024 was $1,050,000, showing an increase of $27,196 compared to 2023, a 2.7% rise.

    “The September sales results reflect a continuation of the positive momentum in the market as we approach spring. The recent reduction in interest rates and indications of further decreases are boosting buyer confidence. This positive trend is expected to persist throughout the spring and summer selling season, leading up to Christmas,” commented REINZ Rural Spokesperson Shane O’Brien.

    Seven regions recorded an increase in sales compared to September 2023, with Northland (+63 sales) and Waikato (+42 sales) observing the biggest increases. Taranaki (-18 sales) and Bay of Plenty (-8 sales) recorded the biggest decreases in sales in the three months to September 2024 compared to the three months to September 2023. Compared to the three months to August 2024, 8 regions recorded increased sales.

    Ten regions saw the median price of lifestyle blocks increase between the three months ending September 2023 and the three months ending September 2024. The most notable examples were in the West Coast (+74.3%) and Taranaki (+21.2%), with

    the most significant decreases being in Auckland (-4.5%) and Nelson/Marlborough/Tasman (-2.7%).

    The median number of days to sell for lifestyle properties was 18 days more in the three months to September 2024 than in the three months to September 2023, sitting at 95 days. West Coast (65 days) recorded the shortest number of days to sell in September 2024. Auckland (114 days) recorded the longest number of days to sell.

    “Buyers have access to a good selection of listings across all markets, and the upward trend in median sale prices for both Farmlets and Bareland is encouraging. However, the increase in the average days on the market suggests that buyers are still cautious when purchasing,” comments O’Brien.

    Touring a quiet, freehold landed estate in Bishan: 15 minutes to Bishan MRT station and Junction 8 (from $4.18m), Lifestyle News

    Located in D20, Clover Avenue is a very long road, with a few side streets. There are some commercial shophouses on one side, and a large park, Clover Crescent Playground, on the other.

    When I was driving here from town, Google Maps directed me to drive over using Lornie Highway then Jalan Pemimpin.

    I have to confess to feeling not very impressed with the area at first, due to the large number of construction projects in the Thomson and Marymount area. In addition, Jalan Pemimpin is quite an industrial area, so I wasn’t expecting much from Clover Avenue.

    However, the estate ended up pleasantly surprising me with how liveable it is! Join me on my walkabout of the area below to see why.

    For those not familiar with the area, here’s the map. As you can see, Clover Avenue is parallel to Jalan Pemimpin and, over at Jalan Pemimpin, you can find several offices such as APS Industrial Building, Pemimpin Industrial Building, and the like.

    As mentioned in the headline, the estate is within a 15 minutes walk of Junction 8, and Bishan MRT station.

    I’ve previously classified 15 minutes as “walking distance” in previous landed estate tours, with some readers commenting to say that they disagree. Certainly, when the sun is out in full blast during mid day, I can see why some people would say that 15 minutes is too far to walk.

    As such, you’ll be glad to hear that Clover Avenue is also close to a second MRT station, Marymount MRT — with the houses between nine to 14 minutes walk of Marymount MRT station. (In terms of retail shops and amenities, there is, unfortunately, much less at Marymount MRT station as compared to Junction 8!)

    There’s not much further ahead (besides the houses on Jalan Binchang) so we’ll head back to get back to the main focus of today’s tour: Clover Avenue.

    There are no supermarkets here but you can walk to Esfira on Jalan Pemimpin, to FairPrice Finest at Junction 8, or to Shunfu HDB estate. For your fitness buffs, there’s the gym, BFT Upper Thomson, along Jalan Pemimpin.

    There are two other large playgrounds close by, Clover Way Park and Binchang Rise Playground, so kids (and fur babies) will have lots of space to roam. (Both playgrounds are within five minutes walk of Clover Crescent Playground.)

    This brings us to Binchang Walk, where you’ll find even bigger houses. If you turn right, you’ll reach Clover Way Park playground.

    (Both the street to the right and the street to the left can take you to Junction 8. It’s an old and large Capitaland mall, so I don’t think it’ll need an introduction. You can find everything from Bishan Bus Interchange to banks and Best Denki there. If you really want to know about the shops, click here for the Junction 8 Store Directory.) 

    Like Bukit Timah, Bishan is known for its large number of famous schools. Depending on which unit you’re looking at, the houses at Clover Avenue may be within 1 km of schools such as Catholic High and Marymount Convent. You’re also just across the road from Raffles Institution.

    This brings us to the end of today’s article. I entered the estate feeling sceptical about it but left thinking I wouldn’t mind living there. According to Edgeprop, transactions in this estate are quite limited, there were no sales in 2023 and 2024, for example.

    Real Estate Institute Of New Zealand (REINZ) August Data Reveals Variety In The Lifestyle Property Market

    Data released today by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) shows 79 fewer lifestyle property sales (-5.6%) for the three months ending August 2024 than for the three months ending July 2024.

    Overall, there were 1,330 lifestyle property sales in the three months ending August 2024, a 2.9% increase compared to the three months ending August 2023 (1,293 sales). There were 1,409 lifestyle property sales for the three months ending July 2024.

    5,669 lifestyle properties were sold in the year to August 2024, 113 (+2.0%) more than were sold in the year to August 2023. The value of lifestyle properties sold was $6.32 billion for the year to August 2024.

    Shane O’Brien, Rural Spokesman at REINZ, commented on the regional dynamics: “During the month, there were 433 sales of lifestyle properties that included 80 bareland blocks. Bareland block sales have dropped compared to August 2023 (101) and August 2022 (137) as the amount of available land reduces. At the same time, many buyers are looking to buy existing properties to ensure certainty against rising building costs and lengthy build times. There were 353 Farmlet sales during the month, the same number as August 2022.”

    The median price for lifestyle properties has seen a general upward trend. For all lifestyle properties, the median price reached $950,000, reflecting a 4.4% increase compared to the previous year. Farmlet Lifestyle properties had a median price of $1,045,000, up by 2.0% year-over-year. In contrast, the median price for Bare Land Lifestyle properties fell to $432,500, a decrease of 3.3% from last year.

    Seven regions recorded an increase in sales compared to August 2023, with the largest increases seen in Manawatu-Whanganui (+28 sales) and Wellington (+27 sales). Otago ( -19 sales) and Taranaki ( -17 sales) recorded the biggest decreases in sales in the three months to August 2024 compared to the three months to August 2023. Three regions recorded increased sales compared to the three months to July 2024.

    Nine regions saw the median price of lifestyle blocks increase between the three months ending August 2023 and the three months ending August 2024. The most

    “The lifestyle market remains active, with sales numbers fluctuating monthly but the median sale process remaining relatively steady. The median for Farmlet sales across NZ was $1,060,000 in August 2024. We expect this market to continue to respond to increased buyer interest as the residential market improves across much of New Zealand in coming months,” adds O’Brien.

    The median days to sell a lifestyle property increased to 90 days, up 11 days from the three months to August 2023. There were notable regional variations in selling times, with Southland having the fastest sales at just 52 days, while Auckland recorded the slowest at 104 days.
