‘New experience, new challenge’: Goalie Hassan Sunny on penalty shootout against Tharman in President’s Challenge, Lifestyle News

He may have hung up his gloves and retired from international football, but we haven’t seen the last of Singapore goalkeeper Hassan Sunny yet.

On Sunday (Oct 6), he’ll be facing President Tharman Shanmugaratnam in a penalty shootout for President’s Challenge Night 2024.

“It’s definitely very important giving back to the community,” the 40-year-old told AsiaOne in a recent interview.

“I feel that we do have lots of people coming to watch our games at the National Stadium, so it’s our duty as professional football players to give back to the community through charity events.”

Previously, Hassan earned the admiration of Chinese fans after his goalkeeping performance in the Singapore-Thailand World Cup Qualifier led to China advancing instead of Thailand.

When they sent money to the nasi padang stall he owns after its QR payment code was shared widely, Hassan donated $10,000 of the money to Muhammadiyah Welfare Home.

“When you receive money that does not belong to you, you have to donate it,” he said then.

So when President’s Challenge came up with the idea of the president taking penalties against Hassan for charity, the goalie told us he was “more than happy”.

“It will be a new experience facing the President himself, and on stage,” he said. “New experience, new challenge.”

Though he declined to tell us if he’ll be playing typical penalty shootout mind games with Tharman, Hassan said his goal was just to “have fun”.

‘Give an opportunity to the younger ones’

Hassan took a trip down memory lane with us, sharing that he first started playing football in primary school and was initially a left-midfielder before switching to goalkeeper at 14.

When he got into the National Football Academy Under-16s, that’s when Hassan felt that it could be an actual career.

“I felt that there was a pathway to continue my football journey,” he explained.

Hassan shared that a highlight of his football career was facing off against Indonesia.

“We didn’t get the results we wanted, but performance-wise, I think everyone in the country was satisfied with the performance by the players,” he said.

In the 2021 AFF Championship semi-finals, the Red Lions fought a hard battle against Indonesia, facing red cards until they were down to just eight men and losing in extra time.

The lowest point of Hassan’s career was when he injured his knee in 2011, the bane of many-a footballer.

He was out for nearly a year, and when he was cleared to play “probably five weeks after [he] recovered”, the injury recurred and he had to go back to surgery.

“Altogether, I was out for almost two years, so two years without football was the most challenging time in my life,” he said.

“But, having said that, it changed my life in terms of how I take care of my diet, my football life.”

    [[nid:700924]]

After 115 caps for Singapore, Hassan announced his retirement from international football in an Instagram post on Aug 18, coincidentally just before his own favourite goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer.

Hassan still plays for Albirex Niigata (S) in the Singapore Premier League (and Neuer for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga).

“I’m 40 this year, and we don’t have a big pool of talent when it comes to goalkeepers, so I’ve been playing for more than 20 years,” he said.

“Maybe it was time for me to call it a day and give an opportunity to the younger ones to come up and experience international football.”

He added that it didn’t “look good” for someone at his age to still play for the national team.

“They have to start somewhere,” he continued. “It may not be a smooth start for them, but sooner or later they’ll improve and become better on this journey.”

The President’s Challenge Night 2024 will also feature Ronan Keating (formerly of Boyzone), local singers Rahimah Rahim and Deborah Choi, and Zoe Tay in collaboration with music and theatre company Bhaskar’s Arts Academy.

It will air Oct 6 at 7.30pm on Channel 5, Mewatch, Mediacorp Entertainment on YouTube and Mediacorp’s TikTok page. All proceeds from the President’s Challenge Donation Drive will aid the 65 benefitting organisations backed by President’s Challenge 2024.

Review: People Of Tomorrow In Vasant Vihar Delivers A Unique Vegan Dining Experience

Veganism is really taking off these days, with more and more people embracing the lifestyle. And as it grows, New Delhi has welcomed a bunch of vegan restaurants, including People of Tomorrow. Tucked away in the chic Basant Lok market in Vasant Vihar, this spot is perfect for vegan lovers. It’s not just the food that’s vegan-friendly though-the whole place is designed with sustainability in mind. From eco-friendly interiors to the cutlery and lanterns, the vibe here is truly one-of-a-kind. We had the chance to check it out recently and dive into their delicious offerings, and here’s a little taste of what we experienced.
We started off our evening with some of their signature cocktails. First up, we had the Bramble, a delightful mix of gin, java plum, and lemon, perfectly balancing sweet and sour notes-it was fantastic! Then, we sipped on the Paloma Of Tomorrow, a refreshing blend of grapefruit roselle, oregano, and lemon, which was equally delightful. Lastly, we tried the Miraflores, featuring pisco, sweet sherry, martini rosso, and maraschino cherry. It had a bit of a bitter edge at first, but it grew on us.

When it came to appetisers, we kicked things off with the Akuri, a modern twist on the traditional Parsi dish. Made with scrambled watermelon seed paneer and served with a soft bun, it was pure comfort in a bite-so good that we finished it in no time! Then, we had the Won-A-Ton, their house-made dumplings in a tasty chilli, ginger, and umami sauce. They were soft, juicy, and steamed to perfection-dim sum fans, you’ll love these! We also gave the Tartare De Nasu a try, which was an eggplant tartare served with lotus stem chips and a scallion dip. Even if you’re not a big eggplant fan, this dish might just win you over!

For the main course, we wanted to try the Mazeman, but it wasn’t available, so we went with It’s Bianging instead. This dish featured hand-pulled noodles tossed in chilli, garlic, and peanut sauce. It was hearty and full of flavour, making for a satisfying main. Although we only tried this, there are plenty of other exciting options on their menu like Tomatoes of Tomorrow, Ananas Carpaccio, Fatayer, and Alla Norma. If you’ve got room, definitely check them out!

No meal is complete without dessert, and we ended ours on a sweet note with Eton’s Mess. This refreshing dessert had layers of vanilla bean custard, soft vanilla sponge, red fruit compote, fresh mango, and coconut oat streusel, topped with mini pavlova. It wasn’t too heavy and hit the spot just right.
Overall, we had a fantastic time at People of Tomorrow. If you’re on the hunt for a top-notch vegan spot in the city, this place should definitely be on your list!

  • Understanding The 5 Major Tastes That Make Up Our Food Experience: Food Expert Explains

Understanding The 5 Major Tastes That Make Up Our Food Experience: Food Expert Explains

Have you ever wondered why some people like the taste of karela, while others don’t? Likewise, you will find a group enjoying spice in their foods, and then some prefer their meals light and bland. Taste preferences are unique to each; in fact, it tops the list of what consumers care about when deciding what to eat or drink. Our genetic makeup and life experiences also have a lot to do with which tastes we find appealing and which ones our senses forbid. In this article, we plan to decode the science of our taste buds and understand why different types of foods taste different. Let’s elucidate further.
Also Read: The Secret To Umami’s Magic Chemistry On Our Taste Buds

Taste Vs Flavours: What Is The Difference Between The Two:

Food expert Krish Ashok, who goes by the name ‘masalalab’ on Instagram, shared a post explaining the difference between flavours and taste. According to him, we often use the terms ‘flavours’ and ‘taste’ interchangeably. But, if you dive in deep, you will find a striking difference between the two.

Flavour is a multi-dimensional experience, made up of taste, aroma, visual, sound and sensations. In fact, 80 percent of our perception of flavours is the smell. On the other hand, taste is a sense organ that contributes to less than 20% of the overall perception of flavours. “We can smell more than 10,000 aromas, but we can taste only five things – sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami,” explains Krish Ashok.

He further explains that when a person says, “biryani tastes wonderful”, what he/she means is the look of the food, the aroma of the garam masala (in the dish) and the umami in the meat have made the dish flavourful.

The Science Of Taste: What Are The 5 Taste Sensations?

According to the Collins Dictionary, the taste of something is the individual quality, which a food has when you put it in your mouth. “It also helps distinguish one food from the other,” reads the definition. In other words, taste is the result of a substance landing on the receptors of your tongue, activating the taste sensation and signals in the brain.

Food expert Krish Ashok says that there are five specific types of tastes that our brain identifies – “sweet, salty, bitter, sour and umami”.
Also Read: Author Krish Ashok Explains “Indian Food Terms” In An Oh-So-Relatable Manner

    Taste 1. Sweet:

Sweet tastebuds detect sugar and sugar substitutes like aspartame and sucralose, which are artificial sweetening agents you find in different foods.

    Taste 2. Salty:

Salt tastebuds detect sodium. They also respond to potassium, which is why you will find low sodium salt for high blood pressure containing potassium chloride.

    Taste 3. Bitter:

Bitter tastebuds detect alkaloids, many of which, as per the food expert, could be poisonous. For instance, caffeine is an alkaloid, which makes coffee or tea taste bitter.

    Taste 4. Sour:

Sour tastebuds detect protons. So, acidic things are sour. Take the citric acid in lime and amla and tartaric acid in tamarind for instance.

    Taste 5. Umami:

Umami tastebuds detect glutamates, a type of amino acid. Foods like soy sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes, cheese, meat, seafood and Ajinomoto or MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) contain glutamates, consumption of which activates both your salt and umami tastebuds.

Why Do Certain Bitter Foods Taste Sweet After Consumption?

If you drink water after eating amla, it leaves a sweet aftertaste in your mouth. Ever wondered why? Krish Ashok explains that amla is citric acid, which is water soluble in nature. So, when you drink water after having amla the acid is diluted and the sour tastebuds turn off, activating our sweet tastebuds. “So it turns out, acidic foods also help trigger sweet tastebuds,” he adds.

The science of taste is amazing. Understanding it well helps evolve your overall food experience; or as Krish Ashok says, “Your tongue is like the boss at work”. Enjoy your meal!

  • Chelsea appoint new CEO for their women’s team with ‘no experience of running a football club’ in surprise move amid ownership tension at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea appoint new CEO for their women’s team with ‘no experience of running a football club’ in surprise move amid ownership tension at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have appointed a former media professional as their women’s team new chief executive officer in a bizarre move by the club, according to reports.

The Blues are the reigning Women’s Super League champions after winning the English top-flight title for a record-breaking seventh time under Emma Hayes last season.

Hayes later made the decision to leave Chelsea in favour of becoming the next United States women head coach in a move that sparked several changes at Stamford Bridge.

The women’s team is now running entirely separate to Chelsea’s men’s squad and have taken the decision to appoint former Athletic general manager Aki Mandhar into the top director role, as reported by the Guardian.

Mandhar doesn’t boast any football management experience, but has been tasked with delivering success both on and off the field for the Blues women’s team moving forward.

She previously fulfilled the role of chief operating officer at the Daily Telegraph having initially embarked on a career in public relations.

Chelsea is a new project for Mandhar and will reportedly be tasked with improving matchday attendances after the club struggled to fill out seats at Stamford Bridge last season.

The Blues struggled while Arsenal in contrast generated huge home crowds when they moved to playing WSL and Champions League matches at the Emirates.

Mandhar is expected to be tasked with improving attendances for women's games at Stamford Bridge

Mandhar is expected to be tasked with improving attendances for women’s games at Stamford Bridge

Meanwhile, Mandhar’s arrival comes at a time when there is disparity between investors at the top of the club amidst a souring in the relationship between co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

50-year-old Boehly has been the face of Chelsea that was formerly represented by ex-owner Roman Abramovich, who oversaw the club’s greatest period of success prior to being forced to sell after the UK Government imposed restrictions amidst Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Now there are suggestions that Boehly and Eghbali both want to buy each other’s shares to gain a greater controlling portion. Mail Sport previously revealed that Clearlake Capital have no intention of selling their stake.

Clearlake own a 61.5 per cent majority in Chelsea, but all key decisions are made as a collective process between a group of four main investors.

Virat Kohli’s one8 Commune has long been a name synonymous with stylish dining and culinary flair. After making a mark in New Delhi and Mumbai, the beloved restaurant chain has finally landed in Mohali, Punjab, and trust us – it’s a must-visit. As the 10th outlet in their collection, this one promises an experience like no other. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a visual feast. The towering white lanterns gracefully hanging from the ceiling set the mood just right. The spacious seating is both luxurious and cosy, perfect for an intimate dinner or a lively get-together. And then, of course, there’s the bar – unique and sleek, offering a chic experience for cocktail lovers. Their rooftop seating lets you take in the stunning cityscape while enjoying your meal. Cocktails:

Our evening began with a round of signature cocktails. The cocktail menu at one8 Commune is crafted to impress, and we couldn’t resist trying a few. First up was the Malabari Nannari, a refreshing concoction made with sous vide vanilla pods-infused vodka, honey jalapeno water, and green apple juice, topped with ginger beer. It was a balanced blend of sweet, spicy, and tangy that had us hooked. Next came the showstopper, Pop The Corn – and yes, it was served in an actual popcorn bag! This playful drink, featuring vanilla pods and Aperol, felt like sipping on buttery popcorn, and we were blown away by both the flavour and presentation. Lastly, the Majestic Sour, infused with floral and fruity notes, offered a smooth, vodka-forward sip that was the perfect palate cleanser.

    Appetisers:

The appetisers at one8 Commune are an experience in themselves. We kicked things off with their signature Mushroom Googly Dim Sums. These juicy, perfectly crafted dim sums won us over at first bite. Their unique maroon colour was eye-catching, and the accompanying dips added a delightful contrast of flavours. Next up was the Kala Chana Hummus Chaat, a fusion masterpiece blending Indian and Mediterranean elements. The naan paired with hummus instead of the usual pita was a game-changer! To round out the starters, we tried the Amritsari Fried Fish and Chips, a golden-brown delight that was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. A must-try if you’re a seafood lover.

    Main Course:

Despite our growing fullness, we couldn’t resist the Thai Chilli Garlic Noodles – a spicy, flavour-packed dish that’s sure to win over any Asian cuisine fan. We also sampled the Nasi Goreng, a classic Indonesian dish that was flavourful, though the chicken was slightly rubbery in texture.

    Sweet Endings:

No meal is complete without dessert, and we couldn’t stop at just one. First, we indulged in the Tiramisu Cornetto, a twist on the classic tiramisu served in a cornetto cone. While the sweetness was a tad overpowering, the inventive presentation made up for it. Our second dessert choice was the Pull Me Up Cake, a crowd-pleaser that’s as fun as it is delicious. Watching the gooey chocolate flow down was a visual treat, and the rich flavours didn’t disappoint either.
