5 Things Your Mouth May Indicate About Your Health, According To An Expert

Oral hygiene is crucial for maintaining healthy teeth, gums, and mouth. While some of us are quite diligent about it, others may not give it as much importance. If you fall into the latter category, you may have faced some dental problems at some point. These could manifest as cavities or other symptoms such as a dry mouth and cracked lips. Although these issues may seem trivial, we often ignore them. However, you’ll be surprised to know that your mouth can reveal a lot of hidden secrets about your health. Recently, dietitian Manpreet Kalra took to Instagram to share five things our mouths may indicate about our health.

Oral Health: Here Are 5 Things That Your Mouth May Be Telling You About Your Health:

    1. Bleeding Of Gums

Have your gums been bleeding a lot lately? According to Manpreet, this could be a sign of a vitamin C deficiency. When you do not have sufficient vitamin C in your diet, your gums can become inflamed, resulting in bleeding. To avoid this, she recommends enriching your diet with vitamin C-rich fruits such as oranges, kiwis, and lemons.

    2. Foul Smell

Most of us assume that a foul smell in the mouth is a result of improper oral hygiene. While it surely contributes to the odour, it could also indicate underlying health issues. The nutritionist shares that a foul smell may also occur if you have toxicity in your body. You can prevent this by consuming detoxifying foods such as leafy greens, garlic, and turmeric.

    3. White Coating On Tongue

Another common oral problem is a white coating on the tongue. If you’ve been noticing it for some time, this could be your body’s way of indicating a health problem. Manpreet says that a white coating on the tongue could be a sign of an overworked liver. She recommends combatting this issue by making a liver detoxifying smoothie featuring cucumber, apple, mint leaves, and more.

    4. Dry Lips

Soft and plump lips are something that we all desire. However, the opposite – dry and cracked lips – can be our worst nightmare. While dry lips are usually caused by dehydration or weather conditions, they could also indicate a more serious problem. According to Manpreet, dry lips may result from an omega-3 deficiency. To prevent this, she suggests sipping chia seed water every day around 11 a.m

    5. Dry Mouth

A dry mouth is a condition in which your mouth doesn’t have enough saliva to keep it moist. While inadequate water intake is the main reason for this, it could also be due to an imbalance in sugar levels. Yes, you heard that right. The nutritionist recommends starting your day with methi seed tea to prevent a dry mouth, as methi is great for keeping blood sugar levels under control.

How To Check Purity Of Cinnamon – Here’s What The Nutritionist Revealed:

Simrun shares that the most commonly found cinnamon in the market is cassia. It looks like bark, has a broader surface area, and is often used as a cheap substitute for cinnamon. According to her, “Cassia has a higher amount of coumarin, which in higher doses can be toxic for your health.” She further states that if you wish to reap the benefits of drinking cinnamon water, you must use real cinnamon. But what does real cinnamon look like? Simrun reveals that real cinnamon is smooth on the outside and is rolled from one side to the other – just like a newspaper. It also has a very delicate smell and flavour. She says, “If you are drinking cinnamon water, opt for real cinnamon. If you’re making a curry, you may use cassia, but in moderation.”

    Watch the complete video below:

What Are The Different Types Of Cinnamon?

Did you know there are four different types of cinnamon? Among the four, Cassia and Ceylon cinnamon are the most famous. Ceylon cinnamon hails from Sri Lanka and is known for its soft texture. The other two varieties are Korintje cinnamon, from Indonesia, and Saigon cinnamon, from Vietnam. All these varieties of cinnamon differ in their flavour profiles and coumarin levels, making them unique.

How To Incorporate Cinnamon Into Your Diet?

There are several exciting ways to incorporate cinnamon into your diet. You can add it to your curries, oatmeal, and even beverages such as tea or coffee. Not only that, but you can also incorporate cinnamon into several baked goods such as cakes, pies, and cupcakes. Looking for some interesting cinnamon-based recipes? Click here to explore.

2024 college football Week 9 picks against the spread, odds, lines, trends: Vegas expert reveals predictions

The Week 9 college football schedule has already seen nine games unfold and teams such as No. 17 Boise State and No. 19 Pittsburgh have scored important wins. Now there are four ranked matchups set for Saturday with the Week 9 college football odds via SportsLine consensus listing No. 12 Notre Dame as a 14-point favorite against No. 24 Navy. Another surprising top-25 team, No. 25 Vanderbilt, is +17.5 against No. 5 Texas.

No. 15 Alabama vs. No. 21 Missouri (+15.5) and No. 8 LSU vs. No. 14 Texas A&M (-1) are SEC matchups that could go a long way in shaping the College Football Playoff picture, while top-ranked Oregon (-21.5) will look to keep rolling against No. 20 Illinois in the 3:30 p.m. ET Big Ten on CBS matchup.

Before locking in any Week 9 college football picks on those games or others, be sure to see the college football betting guide from legendary Vegas handicapper Bruce Marshall

For years Vegas-based Marshall was synonymous with The Gold Sheet, the famed sports betting newsletter. With a background in play-by-play work and sports information while in college, Marshall joined TGS in 1981 when hired by the legendary Mort Olshan and served as executive editor for many years.

An in-demand guest on numerous sports talk radio and TV shows across the country, Bruce’s vast array of editorial work has been featured in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the New York Post and many other outlets. He has won various handicapping titles and also is working on several book projects. Bruce also enters the Week 8 college football weekend schedule on an 24-10 roll (+1281) on his official SportsLine college football spread betting picks.

Now, using his Tech Corner technique that evaluates all the trends and the latest college football odds, Marshall has turned his attention to college football betting for Week 9 and revealed picks for each matchup. Head to SportsLine to see every pick.

Top college football predictions for Week 9

One of the top college football picks Marshall is recommending for Week 9: He’s backing Michigan State (+4) to cover on the road against Michigan in a 7:30 p.m. ET on matchup on Saturday. The Wolverines have won four of the past six in this rivalry and had tremendous spread numbers the past couple years.

However, Marshall says this is a matchup where you can throw out trends from past season. Michigan is struggling badly with a 1-6 ATS record, while Michigan State has covered in three of its past four, including an outright upset as a 6.5-point underdog against Iowa last week.

“The Spartans are 4-1 as underdogs for head coaching Jonathan Smith, a role he played well previously at Oregon State (17-10-1 between 2019-23),” Marshall told SportsLine. See which other picks to make here

  • Stop Reheating Your Tea! Expert Shares 3 Ways It Could Be Harming Your Health

Stop Reheating Your Tea! Expert Shares 3 Ways It Could Be Harming Your Health

There’s nothing more comforting than a hot cup of chai. Just one sip and it automatically uplifts our spirits, doesn’t it? As a chai lover myself, I cannot imagine going through my day without sipping on multiple cups – it’s my guilty pleasure. However, there are times when my cup of chai may not be hot enough. In such a situation, my instinct is to quickly reheat it in the microwave or over a gas stove. I’m sure many of you chai enthusiasts do the same. But did you know this may not be such a great idea? While it may taste delicious and save you time in making a fresh one, reheating chai can lead to several health issues. Recently, Gut Health and Ayurveda Coach Dimple Jangda took to Instagram to share insights about why you should think twice before reheating your chai.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Here’s Why You Should Never Reheat Your Tea, According To The Expert:

According to Dimple, there are three ways reheating chai could be harming your health:

    1. May Cause Iron Deficiency

Yes, reheating chai may be the reason behind your iron deficiency. Dimple explains that tea leaves contain tannins – a compound that gives chai its distinct colour and flavour. However, when you reheat chai, it also leads to a higher concentration of tannins. This could be harmful, as tannins affect the absorption of nutrients from other foods you consume during the day. She states that it could reduce iron absorption by almost 30-40%, leading to iron deficiency,

    2. Acidity And Stomach Issues

Not just that, reheating chai can also cause acidity and stomach-related issues. She says, “When we overcook the tea leaves, they become acidic in nature, especially when mixed with milk.” This acidic compound can lead to heartburn, acid reflux, and a burning sensation in your stomach. It may also cause a lot of discomfort throughout the day. To avoid this, try making tea without milk or swap it for lactose-free alternatives.

    3. Dehydration

Did you know reheating tea can also make you dehydrated? This is because tea contains caffeine, and when you overcook it, the concentration of caffeine increases. Dimple shares that caffeine is also a mild diuretic. So, you may find yourself rushing to the bathroom and urinating more frequently. Plus, it can leave you feeling dehydrated.

    Watch the complete video below:

So, What Is The Right Way To Consume Tea?

The expert suggests avoiding reheating tea and consuming it fresh. When making it, she recommends brewing the tea leaves for no more than 3-5 minutes. She also advises not to add dairy to your chai and opt for lactose-free alternatives such as almond milk or coconut milk. Even better, you can switch to herbal teas like chamomile tea, hibiscus tea, dandelion tea, and green tea. Dimple states that these teas contain fewer tannins and offer more health benefits compared to regular tea. Plus, they also help detoxify your body and flush out all the harmful toxins.

EXPERT PITCH: WVU neurologist addresses updated guidelines suggesting screenings, lifestyle changes are keys to preventing first strokes | WVU Today

This week, the American Stroke Association released new guidelines designed to reduce risks of first strokes. WVU School of Medicine Stroke Program Medical Director Dr. Muhammad Alvi is available to discuss what that will mean for patients.
    (WVU Photo)

A West Virginia University stroke expert says new guidelines from the American Stroke Association that are designed to reduce the risk of a first stroke for patients provide a more comprehensive approach to early detection and prevention and, because of that, could lead to fewer stroke cases.

Dr. Muhammad Alvi is the medical director for the WVU School of Medicine Stroke Program. His work as a board-certified neurologist with the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute involves leading an interdisciplinary stroke team of specialists.

On Oct. 21, the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, updated its clinical recommendations.

The new guidelines state healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as good nutrition, smoking cessation and being physically active, along with routine health screenings and managing risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke, can help keep people from having initial strokes.

    Quotes:

“As providers, we are able to recommend behavioral and healthy lifestyle changes, including medications for some patients, by reviewing a patient’s physical exam and blood tests. When we address risk factors like high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and elevated blood sugar, we can increase the likelihood of preventing a first stroke.

“Decreasing sedentary lifestyles and increasing physical activity is key to reducing the risk of stroke. Increased physical activity can help regulate blood pressure, cholesterol, inflammatory markers, insulin resistance, endothelial function and weight.

“Many adults can decrease their risk of stroke by following a Mediterranean dietary pattern. Mediterranean dietary programs focus on plant-based foods and healthy fats. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains and extra virgin olive oil play key roles in this dietary lifestyle.

“Obesity and weight continue to be a factor for many stroke patients, and this new guideline explores using FDA-approved glucagon-like protein-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist medications, like semaglutide or trizepatide, for patients with this risk factor and Type 2 diabetes.” — Dr. Muhammad Alvi, associate professor, WVU School of Medicine, medical director, WVU Stroke Program, and neurologist, WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute

  • Can You Eat Ghee Or Butter If Youre Lactose Intolerant? Expert Shares Insights

Can You Eat Ghee Or Butter If Youre Lactose Intolerant? Expert Shares Insights

Ghee and butter are what make our food taste divine. Just a spoonful of them, and they instantly elevate the flavour of our dishes. Without them, it feels like something is lacking, doesn’t it? As much as we love adding these golden delights to our food, they are not suitable for everyone. People suffering from lactose intolerance, in particular, may have to resist indulging in them. But is this really true? Should you avoid butter and ghee completely if you’re lactose intolerant? Or is it alright to consume them occasionally? Recently, nutritionist Amita Gadre took to her official Instagram page to spill the beans on this. Before we find out, let’s understand what lactose intolerance really is and what the symptoms of this health condition are.

    What Is Lactose Intolerance?

In simple terms, lactose intolerance is a digestive condition that makes it difficult for the body to digest lactose – a sugar found in milk. Amita shares that this mainly occurs due to a deficiency of the enzyme lactase in our bodies. When lactose is not properly digested, it can lead to several problems such as acidity, bloating, and burping.

What Are the Symptoms of Lactose Intolerance?

    • Stomach pain and cramping
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Constant burping
    • Bloating and gas

    Here’s What the Expert Revealed:

So, can you have ghee or butter if you’re lactose intolerant? According to Amita, this depends on how much lactose each of them contains. She reveals that ghee contains very little lactose, making it suitable for those with lactose intolerance. Ghee is also pure fat, and when boiled extensively, it leaves behind just fat without any lactose. Butter, on the other hand, retains more lactose compared to ghee, so you may not tolerate butter well. But ghee is generally safe, and you can consume it in moderation.

What Are the Best Non-Dairy Substitutes?

Giving up dairy products can be difficult. But you’ll be happy to know that there are numerous non-dairy substitutes that you can have instead. Soy milk, for example, is a great alternative to regular milk. The best part? It offers the same amount of protein as regular milk. Almond milk and rice milk are excellent options too. Additionally, you can also rely on coconut milk or pea milk. All of these are quite nutritious and make wonderful alternatives to regular cow’s milk.
Now that you know the truth about ghee and butter, we are sure you’ll be able to make a better decision for yourself. However, remember to consult your nutritionist before making any major changes to your diet. Stay fit, healthy, and happy!
