    According to Ayurvedic health coach Dimple Jangda (@dimplejangdaofficial), you should keep these three things in mind before drinking water every day. It is extremely important, since according to the expert, water is Prana – the source of life.

    1. Avoid Plastic Bottles

    If you have a reusable plastic bottle at home for drinking water, then it’s time to ditch them. This is because scientists have found microplastics in human blood which is cancerous. As per the expert, this happens when sunlight comes into contact with a plastic bottle and releases microplastics in the water. These microplastics, when consumed via water, can travel around the body and may settle in our organs. Furthermore, the expert points out that these microplastics contain mixtures of EDC or Endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can cause inflammation and even DNA damage.

    2. Don’t Gulp Water

    Most of us have a habit of gulping water mindlessly but, as per the expert, it’s the wrong way. In fact, quickly gulping down water does not help you hydrate better. When you gulp it fast, the impurities present in the water, that are supposed to get removed, get deposited in the bladder and the kidneys. This is why, drink water slowly. Taking small sips can help strengthen your digestive system and support metabolism in your body, thus helping you lose weight.

    Now that you know how you shouldn’t consume water, Dimple Jangda shares how you should actually drink water to make the most of it. The expert suggests to boil water and store it in earthen pots.

    Why?

    Most of the food that we consume becomes acidic in the body and makes toxins. When water is stored in earthen clay pots, it makes the water alkaline. When consumed, this water interacts with acidic food in the body and creates toxins. This helps in keeping acidic and digestion-related problems at bay. Plus, the water stored in clay pots is free from any kinds of chemicals, so drinking from it every day can boost your metabolism.

    What To Use?

    The expert suggests that instead of using plastic bottles, drink water from silver glass, brass utensils, copper glass (in moderation) or steel glass as these items don’t leech into your water.

    Are Idlis Really Protein-Rich? What Is The Reason Behind This Misconception?

    To begin with, we need to understand why idlis are linked to protein in the first place. It is majorly because idlis contain urad dal, which people feel makes the dish a good source of nutrients. Is it really so? Krish Ashok says, “It’s not”. According to him, “An idli contains one to two grams of protein at best, which is equal to a puri that has two grams of protein (due to gluten).” He further shares two major reasons for the same.

    Reason 1. Not enough dal in idli batter:

    A quintessential idli batter contains three parts of rice and one part of urad dal, which is actually in a very low quantity. The food expert adds that it’s worse in restaurants. They use the dal in much lesser quantities due to the high price.

    Reason 2. Dal is not primary protein source

    Dals are a staple in every Indian household. They are easy to procure and prepare and have a rich nutrient profile. However, they are not the primary sources of protein. According to Krish Ashok, dals are rich in healthy carbs, which happen to have a good amount of protein because of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

    How Can You Make Idlis Protein-Packed?

    According to the Manasollasa – one of the earliest cookbooks of India, written in the 12th Century, idli is referred to as ‘iddarika’, made entirely out of urad dal. According to the food expert, adding rice to the batter is a modern cost-cutting phenomenon, majorly due to famines and colonial policies. Krish Ashok further shares two simple tips to make the dish high in protein.

    1. Change the ratio:

    Instead of going for the quintessential 3:1 ratio for idli batter, you can always try increasing the amount of dal and decreasing the rice content. For instance, a Kanchipuram idli uses rice and dal in a 2:1 or 1:1 ratio. “This will help you get two to three grams of protein per idli,” he adds. Here’s a quick recipe for Kanchipuram idli.

    2. Replace urad dal:

    You can replace the urad dal with soybeans to make the dish protein-rich. For the unversed, a 100-gram soybean contains around 36 grams of protein, as per USDA. By doing this, you can get one idli with around four grams of protein, states Krish Ashok.

This is because these foods contain “good bacteria” that help restore the natural balance of the gut bacteria. Moreover, probiotic foods are good for your immune system.     Are Idli And Dosa Probiotic? 

    The simple answer is no. As per nutritionist Amita Gadre, idli and dosa do not remain probiotic after getting cooked. This is because when we make idli or dosa, we steam them. The maximum temperature that your steamer or pressure cooker can reach is 120°C. Lactobacilli – the primary bacterium present in your idli and dosa batter – does not sustain a temperature over 50°C. And no one consumes idli and dosa batter raw since it will give us tummy issues. So, the lactobacilli die at 120°C, meaning the cooked result does not have this bacterium.

    So, Are Idli And Dosa Unhealthy?

    Absolutely not! Nutritionist Amita Gadre shares that just because you steam or cook your idli or dosa, it does not make it unhealthy. This is because the fermentation of sugars or starches is easier to digest. Moreover, idli and dosa have prebiotics since it has fibre because of cooked dal and rice which are going to be helpful for your gut health.

    In the video, the wellness expert plays the role of a human and her stomach, gut lining, liver as well as fructose. Then she enacts what happens to each organ after fructose enters the body via sugary drinks as well as through fruits. The expert adds in the comments that the point of this skit is not to demonise sweet beverages, but to counter the narrative that ‘fruits are bad’.

    Sugary beverages often contain high levels of fructose (HFCS), the expert shares in the caption. Since they are usually without any fibre, they are rapidly absorbed and can be easily overconsumed as they’re not satiating. “This lack of fibre and wholeness as well as the susceptibility to exceeding calorie intake is what makes them harmful.”

    Fruits on the other hand come with fiber, nutrients and antioxidants which makes them a valuable addition to our diet. “They’re also very filling that’s why you will typically not overeat them (except super sweet fruits like mangoes etc),” the expert adds.
