New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorin has explained why he simply couldn’t turn down the opportunity to manage the club.

Amorim took charge at Old Trafford during the international break after signing a two-and-a-half-year deal, replacing Erik ten Hag and taking the reins from interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Portuguese has been in Manchester this week as he adapts to his new job, which is as head coach of the Red Devils following his departure from Sporting Lisbon in his homeland.

Amorin, widely regarded as one of Europe’s top coaches, took charge of his first training session on Monday.

The 39-year-old received some criticism in Portugal for ‘abandoning’ Sporting during the season and he has spoken about the decision in an interview with United legend Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

‘It was really hard but I had to do it, Amorin told Neville. I already had conversations with clubs so was quite normal but what I felt at the time, I felt that this is my place.’

The comment drew a smile from Neville, who spent his entire playing career at United.

‘I think it was the right club in the right moment for me, Amorin continued. ‘I felt that this is my place. I think it was the right club in the right moment for me.

‘It was very tough to leave Sporting. Because in the middle of the season, you can say everything, it’s Manchester United. It’s everything, it’s the moment, it’s the club that I want.

‘But you are leaving your guys in middle of the season. It was really hard but I had to do it and I was so happy, of course.

‘You can see it in every interaction that I have but I also felt in the first moment it was a little bit overwhelming. But after five minutes you start thinking about the club, the team, the players, how to play…. so it was quite fun.’

Amorim has arrived as ‘head coach’, the first in United’s history, and it is part of an overhaul to the structure led by CEO Omar Berrada, director of football Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.

While he will, over time, have the chance to bring his own players in, internally the feeling at United is that there are players at the club that can produce far more than they have shown so far.

Amorin led Sporting to two domestic titles since taking charge in 2020 and left the club in the midst of what was on course to be another successful campaign.

Amorim was confirmed as the man to succeed Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford back on November 1

Sporting sit six points clear at the top of the Portuguese top flight and second in the 36-team Champions League table.

Amorin will begin his tenure with a trip to Ipswich, who will have newfound confidence after their shock 2-1 win at Tottenham last time out.

United will start the weekend 13th in the Premier League table with just 15 points from their first 11 fixtures this season.

After taking on Ipswich, the Red Devils will host Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Europa League four days later.

United have taken six points from a possible 12 in Europe so far this term, having drawn against Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce, before beating PAOK Salonika.

  • How To Detect If Your Food Contains Contaminants? FSSAI Explains

How To Detect If Your Food Contains Contaminants? FSSAI Explains

With frequent headlines about food adulteration to cut costs or outbreaks of infections from contaminated ingredients, ensuring food safety and quality has become a critical concern. By purchasing prepared food or raw ingredients from trusted sources, we can minimise our risk of consuming contaminated foods. Additionally, it is important to follow hygienic cooking, eating, and food storage practices at home. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently shared an Instagram post discussing different types of food contaminants and how to identify each of them. In the caption, FSSAI wrote, “Clean hands, clean surfaces, safe food! A little care goes a long way in keeping your meals safe!”

Such knowledge can help you remain alert and aware before consuming any potentially contaminated food item:

Here Are 3 Possible Types of Food Contamination as Shared by FSSAI:

    1. Physical Contamination

Physical contamination occurs when a physical object enters the food during production or preparation. It can be intentional, as seen in cases of adulterated food products, or accidental due to a lack of awareness. Physical contaminants include any foreign material like stones, stems, seeds, feathers, sand, nails, dust, dirt, straw, hair, etc. Physical objects in food can be a choking hazard and harm your teeth.

How to detect: FSSAI recommends observing the food item carefully, feeling it with your hands, and checking by washing, sieving, etc.

Also Read:Stop Reheating Your Tea! Expert Shares 3 Ways It Could Be Harming Your Health

    2. Chemical Contamination

Chemical contamination occurs when the food comes into contact with toxic chemicals, leading to potential chemical food poisoning. Preservatives, permitted additives beyond safety limits, pesticide residues, insecticides, reused oil, and cleaning chemicals are all examples of chemical contaminants.

Fresh oil and used oil should not be mixed. Avoid using excessive detergent or sanitizer to clean food preparation surfaces, glassware, dishes, or cutlery. Also, rinse and dry dishes well after using detergent. Use only food-grade plastic and metals for cooking.

How to detect: Look for unusual colour, odour and taste.

Also Read: Sip Your Way To Better Health With These 6 Powerful Floral Teas

    3. Microbiological Contamination

Biological or microbiological contamination occurs when food becomes contaminated by living organisms or the substances they produce. Invisible contamination in this case includes bacteria, yeast, protozoa, mould, and viruses, while visible contaminants include flies, worms, cockroaches, weevils, caterpillars, etc.

Biological contamination can lead to foodborne illness. In this case, the disease-causing microorganisms, also called pathogens, get into food and multiply to unsafe levels before being eaten. Bacteria and other pathogens thrive in foods that are moist, high in protein or starch, or neutral in acidity.

How to detect: Observe changes in texture, odour, and colour. Special tests are available for each.

Follow food safety practices at home and avoid eating outside food that seems risky or even doubtful. Stay healthy!

Meet Siddharth Rajsekar, a lifestyle entrepreneur and international speaker, who explains the Power of the 5 Elements for …
    Siddharth Rajsekar

New Delhi: Siddharth Rajsekar, an acclaimed lifestyle entrepreneur and international speaker, captivated attendees at the recent Freedom Business Retreat 2024 with a powerful theme based on the five elements—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether—as metaphors for personal growth and coaching mastery. Each element brought unique insights for becoming a more effective coach.

Earth symbolizes stability, encouraging coaches to build firm foundations based on core values. Water teaches adaptability, helping coaches flow with their clients’ needs and challenges. Fire represents passion, igniting both the coach’s and client’s drive toward transformation.

Air emphasizes communication, reminding coaches to be mindful of their influence and ideas. Finally, Ether speaks to wisdom, urging coaches to channel knowledge from a deeper source to guide clients toward lasting growth.

A special highlight was the keynote by Blair Singer, Siddharth’s mentor, who introduced two key concepts: recharging energy and permeating influence. Recharging likened energy restoration to charging a device, while permeating focused on spreading that energy and impact to those around you, just as tea diffuses in water.

Blair emphasized the importance of Fire as the fuel for passion and transformation, urging attendees to ignite their inner fire to fuel their long-term vision.

Blair’s talk culminated with Ether, the invisible medium that transmits wisdom, inspiring coaches to become open channels for knowledge and opportunities. His metaphor of becoming “sunlike” resonated deeply, encouraging attendees to be self-sustaining sources of energy, serving others with their unique gifts.

Since its inception in 2018, the Internet Lifestyle Hub (ILH) has grown exponentially, now boasting 30,000 members, including 4,000 Diamond members and 110 Quantum members. The community has generated over 650 crores in revenue and continues to push toward its 2035 vision: to create a million learning networks that empower and uplift people worldwide.

  • How Much Weight Can You Lose on Ozempic? A Doctor Explains

How Much Weight Can You Lose on Ozempic? A Doctor Explains

You’ve probably heard about the dramatic weight loss that can happen when you take Ozempic or Wegovy. These medications mimic a hormone called GLP-1, which helps to regulate appetite and blood sugar. This can lead to rapid weight loss—in some cases, up to 20 percent of your body weight. But how much weight can you really lose on Ozempic or Wegovy? And how long can you safely continue taking prescription weight loss medications? Here’s what you need to know.

How much weight can you lose on Ozempic and Wegovy?

Both Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide as their active ingredient. Ozempic was developed to treat type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight loss.

In a series of trials published in Drug Design, Development and Therapy, participants who took 2.4 mg of semaglutide (the highest dosage of Wegovy) lost an average of 9.6  to 17.3 percent of their body weight after 68 weeks. For a 160-lb woman, that’s between 15 and 28 pounds.

“In my experience, most of my patients lose right around the average expected weight loss,” says Meghan Garcia-Webb, MD, a triple board-certified physician specializing in obesity medicine and producer of the YouTube series Weight Medicine with Dr. Meghan. “Of course, some people will naturally lose less and some will lose more.”

Underlying conditions can impact how much weight you lose

    Woman checking blood sugar levels

The exact amount of weight you lose on Ozempic or Wegovy can depend on factors like dosage, lifestyle habits and underlying conditions. For example, people with diabetes tend to lose less weight on these medications compared to people who are only taking them for weight management, Dr. Garcia-Webb says.

In a trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine, people without type 2 diabetes were given 2.4 mg of semaglutide or a placebo, along with nutritional counseling. The semaglutide group lost an average of 14.9 percent of their body weight in 68 weeks, while the placebo group only lost 2.4 percent of their body weight. (For a 160-lb woman, that’s around 24 pounds vs. 4 pounds, respectively.)

Another trial, published in the medical journal Lancet,  only included overweight or obese people with type 2 diabetes. Participants were either given 2.4 mg of semaglutide, 1.0 mg of semaglutide or a placebo. The group with the highest dosage lost an average of 9.6 percent of their body weight—around 15 lbs for a 160-lb woman—compared to 7 percent for the lower-dose group and 3.4 percent for the placebo group.

How Ozempic and Wegovy dosage affects weight loss results

Ozempic is currently available in four dosages (0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0mg and 2.0mg), while Wegovy is available in five dosages (0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.7 mg and 2.4 mg).

Patients typically start with the lowest dose, then increase to higher doses each month “unless there are significant side effects,” Dr. Garcia-Webb explains. “In general, the weight loss is dose-dependent, so a patient will have a greater weight loss if they go to the highest dose.”

For example, someone who’s starting out with a 0.25 mg dose of Ozempic probably won’t lose as much weight (or lose it as quickly) as someone taking a 2.4 mg dose of Wegovy. However, Dr. Garcia-Webb adds, some patients are able to achieve their weight loss goals while taking the lowest dose of a medication. In those cases, they may not need to step up their dosage.

How Ozempic stacks up to Mounjaro and Zepbound

Along with semaglutide, another popular GLP-1 medication is tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound. Mounjaro is prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes, while Zepbound is prescribed for weight management.

“Weight loss with tirzepatide seems to be more significant, with patients losing, on average, about 20 percent [of their] total body weight,” Dr. Garcia-Webb says. “I’ve also seen that patients in general seem to have milder side effects with tirzepatide” than with Ozempic or Wegovy.

How soon will you start to see results?

Weight loss is typically gradual with GLP-1 medications, especially because it can take a few months to get up to the full dosage. “I am not usually expecting significant weight loss after the first month at the 0.25mg dose,” Dr. Garcia-Webb says. “That dose is really just to help a patient’s body get used to the medication.”

However, you can expect to lose at least 5 percent of your body weight by the 12-week mark (around 8 pounds for a 160-lb woman). “In general, that is a good sign that the medication is working as expected,” Dr. Garcia-Webb says.

How long can you stay on Ozempic or Wegovy?

    Woman Exercising outside

“Currently, a patient who is prescribed Ozempic or Wegovy should plan to be on this for life,” Dr. Garcia-Webb says. However, you probably won’t continue to lose weight at the same rapid pace you experienced during the first year. “At some point, a patient’s body is going to reach a new ‘normal’ and weight loss will plateau.”.

If you do need to stop taking Ozempic or Wegovy, be vigilant about diet and exercise to avoid regaining the weight you lost in the long term.

“If a patient does need to stop semaglutide, it is really important to make sure that her lifestyle changes are optimized,” Dr. Garcia Webb says. “This means regular strength training, getting enough protein, eating a whole foods-oriented diet full of fruits and vegetables and not overeating.” This will give you the best chance at preventing weight gain, plus you’ll feel better overall when you follow a healthy lifestyle, she adds.

What Happened Between Aspyn Ovard and Parker Ferris? Us Explains

What Is Going On With YouTuber Aspyn Ovard Us Explains Her Divorce And the Social Media Aftermath

    Aspyn Ovard.

The OG YouTube girlies will remember social media queen Aspyn Ovard. From her lifestyle content to a 2018 collaboration with Tarte Cosmetics — that some of Us are still using, TBH — the Utah native ruled the internet.

While she was constantly slaying on her solo channel, Ovard also gained popularity as part of her joint channel with partner Parker Farris. The duo got married in October 2015, and welcomed three daughters together: Cove in August 2019, Lola in September 2021 and a third baby in April 2024.

As her content shifted into mom-influencing, Ovard decided to keep her home life more on the private side. However, fans discovered in April 2024 that Ovard filed for divorce from Ferris after nearly nine years of marriage. (People reported that divorce documents were filed the same day Ovard announced that she and Ferris had welcomed baby No. 3, whose name she’s yet to share publicly.)

After months of silence, Ovard started to open up about the split in October 2024.

Courtesy of Aspyn Ovard/Instagram YouTube star Aspyn Ovard experienced back-to-back life changes after welcoming a baby and filing for divorce all on the same day. “Sweet baby was ready to be born I guess 👶🏼,” Ovard, 27, wrote via TikTok on Monday, April 1, confirming the arrival of her and estranged husband Parker Ferris’ third […]

“One time I had a baby and then she was in the NICU and then I filed for divorce,” she said in a TikTok video. “People somehow found the records from it and so they started talking about it online and posting it even though I hadn’t said anything and I literally just had a baby and she was premature and she was in the NICU.”

Ovard continued: “Then like literally a thousand articles were written about it and then I just didn’t say anything about it because I just didn’t want to. And then, I said something about it like months later when I wanted attention.”

While Ovard has continued to post about her split — and call herself “crazy” — there are still so many questions to be answered. Us explains what we know so far:

    The Key Players

Aspyn Ovard: The YouTube star finally addressed her divorce in October 2024 after questions about what went wrong.

“Me to myself whenever I post something insane and then keep refreshing my email inbox waiting for my lawyer to say b—h wtf take that down,” she captioned an October 2024 TikTok.

Parker Ferris: Ovard’s estranged husband who, despite their divorce, has appeared in a few joint TikTok videos as of late. One from October 2024 showed Ovard straddling his lap and making a comment that appeared to be about his mom. (It’s been speculated by internet users that Ferris’ mother has been referencing Ovard in since-deleted Instagram Stories.)

    The Gist

Basically, it’s a big ‘ol mess — and even Ovard is leaning into the messiness. Despite all the videos detailing what went down, Ovard did get real about what is off limits.

“I don’t want to be too annoying so I will reply to his comment and tell you guys what, as of now, I plan to share and to not share,” she said. “I’m not going to share exactly what happened, what I found out, whatever. I don’t want to even think? about that right now. I’m not going to share details of like the terms of my divorce.”

    @aspynovard

Replying to @Angelaj89 if you talk about people’s kids online you need to get help

    ♬ original sound – aspynovard

Ovard added: “All of those posts from earlier in the week where I was down in the dumps, that is so for real. That is so genuine.”

Fans have speculated about the reason behind Ovard and Ferris’ split, but the pair is keeping quiet about the specifics, it seems. Ovard did say that she feels “a little bit better” when making TikTok videos that are “not that serious.”

    Why It’s a Big Deal

Well, if you were a part of the internet age that included the YouTube lifestyle girlies, this needs no explanation.

Back in the day, Ovard and Ferris were that couple. But with the speculation around their split, social media users just want answers. Plus, Ovard’s initial decision to stay only to spill the tea on TikTok has raised some eyebrows. No judgment here, though — keep doing you.

    What People Are Saying

It’s no use breaking down all the social media theories — especially when the couple’s kids are involved — but people do have a lot to say.

“Thankful for the people in my life that also grew up watching Aspyn Ovard so I have someone to talk about the drama with,” one X user wrote. Another added, “It feels like all i do anymore is wait for aspyn ovard’s next tiktok.”

Some social media users are also calling this their “aspyn ovard era.”

    @aspynovard

    being self aware is key

♬ You might think Im crazy – •~💋grxnde💋~•

    What We’re Saying

All Us has said thus far is that Ovard is not discussing her divorce. In August 2024, she posted a TikTok following the “demure” trend.

“You see how I don’t talk about my divorce online? Very demure, mindful,” she said while holding baby No. 3. “You see how I considered my children and how it would affect them to have their family’s personal information shared all over the internet? Very smart, very good mom.”

Ovard added: “You see how I will continue to stay unbothered and not share anything to protect my peace? Very demure, very mindful.”

Us also wants Ovard to know that we are very invested in her TikTok videos and would love her to keep posting.

    What’s Next

Honestly, who’s to say. Ovard herself said she doesn’t know what she’ll share next.

  • Did Romans really fight rhinos? Sports historian explains the truth behind the battle scenes in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II

Did Romans really fight rhinos? Sports historian explains the truth behind the battle scenes in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II

In the trailer for Ridley Scott’s hotly anticipated sequel to Gladiator (2000), a new gladiator (played by Paul Mescal) goes to battle in “the greatest temple Rome ever built – the Colosseum”.

He comes up against naval warfare, a cutthroat promoter (Denzel Washington) and a stampeding rhino. But how much of this really took place in Roman times? As always with films based in the past, pedantic historians will jump in to assess the degree of cinematic licence and historical misinterpretation. So it is with the forthcoming Gladiator II.

    The trailer for Gladiator II.

    Did gladiators fight rhinos?

One thing that certainly did not happen was a warrior mounted on a rhinoceros (even a non-computer-generated one) charging at a group of gladiators. However, there is a record of a rhino at the inauguration of the Colosseum in 80BC. It didn’t fight men, but a bull, bear, buffalo, bison, lion and two steers. The other rare mentions of rhinos in Rome are of those in menageries, to be admired as exotic creatures.

This Roman interest in foreign, wild animals was the basis of the initial beast spectacles which began in 275BC with an exhibition of captured war elephants. Such non-violent displays of animals continued into the imperial era, but in 186BC the first staged animal hunt (venatio), featuring both lions and leopards, took place and by 169BC beast hunts had become an official part of republican state festivals.

Later, under the emperors, collecting and transporting beasts, especially unusual and foreign ones, to be displayed – but more often killed – demonstrated imperial power, territorial control and the vastness of the empire. Thousands of animals were brought from Africa and elsewhere to Roman arenas to be slaughtered for entertainment and the meat from the dead animals was given away to the spectators (it was easier than trying to dispose of the many carcasses).

Those who fought the beasts were not gladiators but specially trained hunters (venatores) armed with spears. The venatio could also feature fights between animals, as with the Colosseum rhinoceros, but most often the contest consisted of bulls against an elephant or bear. Animal hunts outlasted gladiatorial combats as a source of spectator entertainment, but as both the size of the empire and imperial funds diminished, greater reliance was placed on domestically reared “wild” animals.

Were there sea battles in the Colosseum?

More credence in historical terms can be given to the film’s staged sea battle (naumachia) in the flooded Colosseum. Such spectacles were expensive to stage and were reserved for special occasions.

The first one recorded was for Emperor Augustus in 2BC. Held on an artificial lake, it featured 30 large ships carrying some 3,000 marines plus an unspecified number of rowers. Participants in a naumachia, typically either convicted criminals or prisoners of war, were expected to kill each other or drown, though, the demonstration of fighting ability and courage could gain them a pardon.

Painting of a naval battle in the Coliseum
The Naumachia by Ulpiano Checa (1894) imagines naval warfare in the Coliseum.
    Museo Ulpiano Checa

The grandest sea battle was provided by Emperor Claudius on Lake Fucinus, a spectacle involving 100 ships and some 19,000 marines and oarsmen. It was at this event that the fighting men reportedly said “hail, emperor, we who are about to die salute you”, mistakenly assigned to gladiators in so many films, including the first Gladiator.

Literary sources (not always to be trusted in antiquity as they were often written well after alleged events) claim that the Colosseum was flooded for a sea battle at its inauguration. After some debate, historians now accept that the engineering mechanisms were in place so that, at least in its early days, the Colosseum could have accommodated a naumachia.

Did a thumbs down really mean death for a gladiator?

Gladiator II also showcases the misconstrued sporting legacy of the thumbs up signal to spare a defeated gladiator who requested mercy or the converse of a thumbs down from those who wished him to die.

The arena was a large, noisy place and hand signals were often used as a means of communication. Indeed, rather than verbally requesting mercy, the defeated warrior himself would raise the index finger of his right hand, or even the hand itself, both of which were recognised pleas for clemency.

Painting of a gladiator with crowd giving a thumbs down
Pollice Verso (Thumbs Down) by Jean-Léon Gérôme, (1872).

When the crowd opted for the death of a fighter they indicated this by means of pollice verso, literally a turned thumb, with no direction specified. When the hand was waved the sign indicated that the gladiator’s throat should be cut by his conqueror. Those who wished to save the vanquished, but courageous, fighter gave the sign pollice compresso, a compressed thumb but one often hidden from sight so as not to cause visual confusion.

Gladiators were valuable assets. Promoters, who had paid a hiring fee (typically 10-20% of their value) for them to fight, were reluctant to incur the full asset value demanded as compensation should they die. Especially when, at the crowd’s insistence, they could have a choice in the matter.

In many instances the event had been promoted to curry favour with the spectators so to go against their wishes would be counterproductive. However, whether the ultimate decision-maker gave a thumbs up or thumbs down is debatable. The idea that this occurred seems to have developed around 1872 with the popularity of a painting by French artist, Jean-Léon Gérôme. In it he depicts vestal virgins giving the dreaded sign. Although titled Pollice Verso, it became conventionally referred to as “the thumbs down painting”.
