  • Google Maps adds AI features to help users explore and navigate the world around them

Google Maps adds AI features to help users explore and navigate the world around them

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Google Maps is heading down a new road steered by artificial intelligence.

The shift announced Thursday will bring more of the revolutionary AI technology that Google already has been baking into its dominant search engine to the digital maps service that the internet company launched nearly 20 years ago as part of its efforts to expand into new frontiers.

Google Maps recently surpassed 2 billion monthly users worldwide for the first time, a milestone that illustrates how dependent people have become on the service’s directions during their daily commutes and excursions to new places. With the introduction of Google’s AI-powered Gemini technology, the maps are now being set up to become entertainment guides in addition to navigational tools.

Starting this week in the U.S. only, users will be able to converse with Google Maps to ask for tips on things to do around specific spots in a neighborhood or city and receive lists of restaurants, bars and other nearby attractions that include reviews that have been compiled through the years. The new features will also provide more detailed information about parking options near a designated destination along with walking directions for a user to check after departing the car.

“We are entering a new era of maps,” Miriam Daniel, general manager of Google Maps, told reporters Wednesday during a preview of the features presented in Palo Alto, California. “We are transforming how you navigate and explore the world.”

Google Maps also is trying to address complaints by introducing more detailed imagery that will make it easier to see which lane of the road to be situated in well ahead of having to make a turn.

In another AI twist, Google Maps is going to allow outside developers to tap into the language models underlying its Gemini technology to enable pose questions about specific destinations, such as apartments or restaurants, and get their queries answered within seconds. Google says this new feature, which initially will go through a testing phase, has undergone a fact-checking procedure that it calls “grounding.”

Google’s Waze maps, which focus exclusively on real-time driving directions, will use AI to offer a conversational way for its roughly 180 million monthly users to announce hazards in the road and other problems that could affect traveling times.

The decision to bring AI into a service that so many rely upon to get from one point to the next reflects Google’s growing confidence in its ability to prevent its Gemini technology from providing false or misleading information, also known as “hallucinations,” to users. Google’s AI has already been caught hallucinating in some of the summaries that began rolling in May, including advice to put glue on pizza and an assertion that the fourth U.S. president, James Madison, graduated from the University of Wisconsin, located in a city named after him.

  • Bjarki to explore ‘A Guide To Hellthier Lifestyle’ on new album – News

Bjarki to explore ‘A Guide To Hellthier Lifestyle’ on new album – News

Bjarki is set to release a new album called ‘A Guide To Hellthier Lifestyle’ on December 13.

The 13-track outing marks the first LP released via the Differance label he co-founded with Thomas Harrington Rawle.

It’s a concept album based around the “psychological landscape of contemporary social issues” such as wellness and its intersection with capitalism, utilising experimental sound textures and techniques with the aim of “encouraging listeners to pause and contemplate the absurdities of contemporary life”, taking inspiration from artists such as Coil, Genesis P-Orridge, and Paul Lansky.

Read this next: How Bjarki became techno’s most unpredictable artist

“This new album is my take on all the social weirdness and wellness obsessions happening right now. It kicked off with a track I started in California – the story of a soul that got born into the wrong womb,” says Bjarki. “During that time, I was noticing more and more of this whole ‘wellness religion’ everywhere – people trying to sell you ‘good vibes’ and random people offering you life coaching sessions on Instagram who maybe have less life experience than a houseplant. All these apps that track our every move; it’s like they’re repackaging control and calling it ‘self care’. Capitalism in yoga pants. That’s when I started putting ‘A Guide To Hellthier Lifestyle’ together. A never ending, self improvement rabbit hole. We are all being sold this idea that we are not quite enough and we need to buy our way out to being better.

“At one point, I took a break from the album and started working on another album full of satirical speeches, AI generated voices, where I create my own voices and type in some ideas of speeches, taking the piss out of wellness gurus and life coaches. I messed a lot with these AI voice generators, creating these deep, faux serious monologues. Proper weird stuff, but it cracked me up. Reminded me of the early days, when I was 13, making tracks on Fruity Loops, mucking around with text-to- speech generators. After the break I came back to finish ‘The Guide’ on a much deeper level.”

He adds: “It’s a reflection, a rebellion, a bit of a piss take. But mostly, it’s just me, doing what I do.”

No advance singles will be released from the album, but two standalone tracks will be coming out beforehand, with the first of those, ‘10’000 Steps But Still Biting My Nails’, out now, which evolves from a soothing opening of fuzzy synth tones to more wigged-out territory.

Listen to it below and pre-order the album here.

  • Who Is Mike Weir’s Wife? Meet ‘The Bachelor’ Michelle Money Fame & Explore Her Lifestyle, Career & More

Who Is Mike Weir’s Wife? Meet ‘The Bachelor’ Michelle Money Fame & Explore Her Lifestyle, Career & More

Being a captain, and that too of the International team, is not a small thing. For it comes with its own pressures and tensions. All of that, however, takes a backseat when it is time to lead the squad, especially at a big event such as the Presidents Cup. But, as Mike Weir takes care of his team, who is there to support him? Cue his wife, Michelle Money of ‘The Bachelor’ fame.

The two met by chance back in 2016, following which they started to date. Fast forward seven years to 2023, and the two announced their engagement to the world when the golfer was 53 years old and Money was 43. Interestingly, the athlete had proposed to the star in January of that year when the two of them had gone on a trip to New Zealand.

“We took a helicopter to the top of a glacier where the most incredible glacier lake was,” recounted Michelle Money in an interview with People, “He got down on a knee and asked me to marry him there on the glacier. It was incredible.” And heartwarmingly enough, the couple then tied the knot just 10 months later in November 2023.

Coming back to Mike Weir’s wife, she is popularly known for being a contestant in the 15th season of the hit show, ‘The Bachelor’, back in 2011. It was then that she dated Brad Womack before parting ways with him later on. Soon after, the star also made her appearances on the second season of  ‘Bachelor Pad’ and the first season of ‘Bachelor in Paradise’.

Interestingly enough, the relationship she currently has with Weir is not her first. For she was formerly married to Ryan Money from Salt Lake City, with whom she shares a daughter named Brielle. The couple, however, separated soon after following which she connected with Cody Sattler during the first season of ‘Bachelor in Paradise’. The two couldn’t manage to make their relationship work, causing it to end in 2016.

How did Mike Weir meet Michelle Money?

“I was walking into a restaurant with my daughter, and he happened to be walking out with a group of friends,” divulged Money. “I didn’t see him, but apparently he saw me and asked his friends if any of them knew me.” What happened then? Well, the Canadian athlete, after reaching his friend’s house, left it soon after to drive back to the restaurant in a bid to find her. Unfortunately, she had already left.

But luck was with the current Presidents Cup International team’s skipper. His friends happened to know a mutual friend who gave him Money’s number. “We went on our first date and never looked back,” recalled the star from ‘The Bachelor’. Soon after, she revealed her relationship status in an interview with Us Weekly in 2016. “Cody and I are not together. I am in a new relationship with a wonderful man and am extremely happy!” It has been 8 years since then. And those years were filled with them being there for each other, be it on or off the course.

The couple were spotted alongside each other with the wife’s daughter, Brielle, carrying the bags for the professional golfer at the par-3 contest ahead of the 2024 Masters at Augusta National. “What an amazing week at @themasters,” wrote the star on her Instagram post, “So fun watching @briellemoney caddy for @mweirsy in the Par 3 tournament! She even hit a ball on 9!”

That’s not all. She even went ahead to express her gratitude for the amount of support that everyone showcased for their family. “Special thank you to all our friends and family who help make this week absolutely unforgettable,” added Mike Weir’s wife. “And extra proud of my husband @mweirsy who never stops working on his game. He is the ultimate example of perseverance, commitment and hard work!”
