  • Clemson football helps T.J. Moore’s family after Hurricane Helene

CLEMSON — Clemson football came together Wednesday to help one of its own who was affected by Hurricane Helene.

Tigers freshman wide receiver T.J. Moore and his family lost everything — their home, car, belongings — in the storm when it hit Tarpon Springs, Florida, a city near Tampa.

Moore’s aunt, Samantha Gonzalez, started a GoFundMe on Wednesday with a stated goal of $10,000, with all donations going toward a new apartment, apartment application fees, furniture and hotel room expenses. The fundraiser exceeded that number by Wednesday night, with more than 300 people donating $32,000.

“I can’t even begin to thank everyone for the overwhelming support,” Moore’s mother, Alexandra Moore, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday. “I’m at a loss for words, wiping many tears. Knowing that we don’t have to wonder or worry where we’ll sleep next takes a huge burden off of our chest.”

Various Clemson football and athletic department staffers donated to the cause. T.J. Moore’s teammates, defensive linemen Peter Woods and T.J. Parker, both gave $500. The largest donation was $7,500 from an anonymous contributor.

According to the GoFundMe, Moore and his family “took on about 5ft of water in Hurricane Helene.” The page shows pictures of flooding in their home and car. Moore is among 14 Florida players who are on the Clemson team.

Maria Shriver is all about family, hosting weekly gatherings for her children and their loved ones.

“Family continues to be super important, even as we get older,” Shriver’s eldest son, Patrick Schwarzenegger, exclusively told Us Weekly at MOSH BrainFest on Saturday, September 21. “It’s nice as we bring in new people, whether it’s my fiancée, [Abby Champion], or Katherine [Schwarzenegger] with her husband, [Chris Pratt], or so on and so forth. We always have other guests that come to the dinner.”

He continued, “It’s kind of an open invite for friends to come, family to come, and it’s just a nice way to get everyone together. The world is always moving so fast. Everyone is so busy with kids and with work and traveling that it’s a nice moment throughout the week to settle down and have everyone be together.”

Shriver, 68, was previously married to Arnold Schwarzenegger between 1986 and 2011, during which they welcomed four children: Katherine, 34, Christina, 33, Patrick, 31, and Christopher, 26. (Arnold, 77, also shares son Joseph Baena, 26, with Mildred “Patty” Baena, whom he secretly welcomed during his marriage to Shriver.)

For Shriver, hosting weekly dinners started when her children were younger.

“There’s a lot of research about families that eat together starting at a very young age do much better when it comes to saying no to drugs, no to alcohol, yes to being connected,” Shriver told Us at the event, which was held at Santa Monica’s The Bungalow. “If you’re too busy during the week, at least that’s something you can count on.”

Outside of spending time with her children, Shriver supports their various endeavors.

“She’s always cheering for me. I’m always cheering for her,” Patrick gushed. “I think our family’s always cheering for each other, and ultimately we want what’s best for everyone involved. She’s always very supportive and I greatly appreciate it.”

Shriver, meanwhile, told Us that she is “proud” of the White Lotus actor.

“I admire Patrick [and] his love. He’s an incredibly caring human being,” Shriver told Us on Saturday. “He’s super smart, but he’s really a loving, caring man.”

Patrick is also in awe of his mother’s “determination towards brain health and toward Alzheimer’s research,” leading to the launch of their MOSH company.

“My mom lost her father to Alzheimer’s and she’s dedicated her life towards brain health research and advocating for brain health and Alzheimer’s awareness,” Patrick told Us. “Through her research and her fund with the Cleveland Clinic, they found that there are three main things that affect someone’s brain health. It’s lifestyle and utilizing your brain, having conversations, socializing. Two is exercising and getting blood flow. And the last is diet.”

He added, “It was always her dream to create a product line in a company that raised money for Alzheimer’s that was mission-driven and educating people about how what they ate impacted their brain health. I’ve been really helping her get that word out there and that mission out there. That’s why we created the MOSH bars. They’re all loaded with brain health nutrients, brain health vitamins, 13 grams of protein, three grams of sugar and high, healthy nutrient fats.”

Saturday’s event helped spread the company’s mission and raise awareness for Alzheimer’s.

“We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Patrick. This was an idea I kept trying to get off the ground and no one was interested,” Shriver said. “And Patrick said, ‘I can do this. I can help you and I believe in this idea. Let me run with it.’ And he did, and he really brought it to life. Everybody said, ‘Oh, people don’t want to eat for their brain health.’ I think MOSH has proven that wrong.”

Shriver further gushed that her late father, Sargent, would be “so proud” of Patrick’s advocacy.

“He’d be so proud that all [Patrick’s] siblings are here. This is really a family affair. His siblings are all here. His nieces are here,” Shriver added, specifically referring to pregnant Katherine’s two daughters with Pratt. “Everybody weighs in. I think he would be really proud that we’re doing something that has a bigger mission. My parents really were always about, ‘You have to do something to make the world better. That’s why you’re here.’ I think he would be really proud.”

  • ‘If things don’t change, there will be another Madeleine’: A year on from her tragic suicide death, Maddy Cusack’s tearful family call for a fix for ‘broken’ women’s football

‘If things don’t change, there will be another Madeleine’: A year on from her tragic suicide death, Maddy Cusack’s tearful family call for a fix for ‘broken’ women’s football

The Cusack family have spent the last 12 months learning to live a life completely different to how they could ever have imagined.

Their eldest daughter Madeleine, known as Maddy, was the vice-captain of Sheffield United Women and their first player to reach 100 appearances.

On September 20, 2023, at the age of 27, she took her own life.

Cusack’s story is tragic and one that has transcended women’s football. In the midst of dealing with their grief, her family has waited patiently for answers.

The Football Association’s investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death started in January and is still on-going.

In a cafe in Sheffield, just under five miles from where Maddy used to run out every other weekend at Bramall Lane, her mother, Deborah and sister, Olivia, have sat down to speak with Mail Sport.

In an hour-long conversation we talk about what Maddy was like on and off the pitch and the success of the charitable foundation that has been set up in her name. But there are also difficult conversations and that is where we must start.

Because a year on from her passing, both Deborah and Olivia fear that what happened to Maddy could happen again.

‘If things don’t change, there will be another Madeleine,’ Deborah says.

‘It might not be this year, it might not be next year but there will be another Madeleine. That’s wrong, that’s not ok and people should be desperate to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

‘This is one of the worst tragedies to happen in women’s football, it doesn’t get any worse than this. I just think that people should be knocking at my door, asking me what went wrong, asking me what can be changed and what they can do moving forwards. As people that have lived it, I think our experience is very valuable.

Cusack’s passing led many in the women’s game to speak out about the importance of player welfare. Her former Sheffield United manager, Carla Ward, said mental health provision was something that was not taken seriously enough in the women’s game while others have called the system ‘broken’.

‘I think a big thing in women’s football, having lived through it with Maddy, girls are hesitant to speak out and address how they’re feeling within organisations because of the backlash they may face from that,’ Olivia says.

‘Nobody should want this to happen again. It can’t happen again to somebody else and we don’t want anyone else to lose a family member in this way and it should be prevented. I don’t understand why no one else feels the urgency to do that.’

Too many players, Maddy’s family feel, are scared to open up in fear it will hamper their career.

‘If you speak out you’re often perceived to be a troublemaker or potential troublemaker,’ Deborah adds. ‘These girls aren’t on loads of money, they are where they are.

‘When Maddy was part-time she was on £6,000 per year. She’d train two or three times a week and play Sunday. When they went full-time, she was on £18,500, which is not minimum wage. But you’re expected to train, behave and perform like an elite athlete. The disparity is ridiculous because who can live on £18,000 a year, so most people have to get a second job to supplement that so they’re working two jobs, you’re travelling at the weekend.

‘A lot of them just get on with it but you shouldn’t have to do that.’ Alongside her football career, Maddy worked part-time for Sheffield United as a marketing executive.

Her family would be open to discussing how they could potentially help and stop other players going down the same route, but conversations from those who work in the game have not been forthcoming.

‘Lots of pressure groups within the women’s game haven’t been very interested, they’ve not really come to us and asked us what’s gone wrong, what we think needs changing. I think that’s perhaps because people don’t really want to criticise the women’s game because of the way it’s portrayed. What’s happened should be the catalyst for criticism, the catalyst for change, for a better future.’

The FA has introduced measures around mental health which are understood to have been an on-going and long-term process, including a mandate for every club to have a full-time equivalent designated safeguarding and welfare officer. They have also introduced an Unacceptable Behaviour policy for all clubs to follow while players have access to mental health and well-being support and a helpline where players can report any grievances. Clubs are also required to share a well-being and mental health strategy.

Deborah and Olivia describe Maddy as someone who was fiercely competitive in everything she did. As well as playing football, she played quick cricket for her county, competed in the 200 meters and long jump for Amber Valley and was also an accomplished horse rider. In Maddy’s case, taking part was not the most important thing.

‘She had to win everything, even monopoly!’ Deborah says. ‘She re-took her Maths exam four times to get an A*, that’s what she was like.’ Only ballet lessons did not last. ‘Her Nan got her to try it, she was dreadful!’

It is those memories of Maddy that her family are desperate to keep alive. The family set up the MC8 Foundation (eight was the number Maddy wore at Sheffield United) a month after her death with the aim of helping young girls get into football.

‘It was important for us to keep Maddy’s memory alive and help young girls get into football like Maddy did,’ Olivia says.

‘It was inspired by us meeting a little girl called Maddison at a vigil. She explained that she’d found it difficult to get into football and she struck up quite a relationship with Maddy and she helped her get into a team. That’s where the Foundation started and since then we’ve achieved so much.’

There has been a series of fundraising events in the last 10 months, with many more planned, and over £50,000 has been raised. In February, Maddy’s friends and family walked 40 miles from Derby County’s Pride Park Stadium to Bramall Lane. Maddy grew up as a Derby supporter. Her brother, Richard, and Deborah are regulars at home and away games.

It is coincidence that Derby play the Blades at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon and that the Women’s Super League season starts on Friday. Our conversation moves on to whether any clubs have planned tributes to mark the one-year anniversary of Maddy’s passing.

The family will hold a vigil at Bramall Lane on Friday night, which they requested through a friend at Sheffield United, rather than the club directly.

‘Derby fans have arranged to applaud in the eighth minute,’ Deborah says. ‘Richard and I will be in the away end.

‘I assume Sheffield United are not doing anything. The most recent women’s match at Bramall Lane, they had a little bit about her in the digital programme. I can only assume, having not heard, that they’re not doing anything.’

It is as Deborah finishes this sentence that Olivia receives a message from a local reporter who had asked Sheffield United what they would be doing to mark the anniversary of Maddy’s passing.

Olivia reads out the club’s response: ‘The plans include: a series of social posts starting on Thursday on various club channels. Hosting a vigil at Bramall Lane requested by the Cusack family, invited members of the Cusack family to Saturday’s game, a page in Saturday’s programme dedicated to Maddy, big screen imagery and tribute from the stadium announcer pre-match on Saturday, encourage supporters of both teams to applaud on eight minutes, encourage supporters at the women’s team fixture at Newcastle United to applaud on eight minutes.’

To say this is a shock to them both is an understatement. Deborah momentarily gets emotional and questions why she was not consulted.

‘I’m in the away end, I’m going because this is what Richard and I do and I’m going because the last time Madeleine played there I’ve got memories of her coming down the steps…’ As her voice trails off, Deborah takes a couple of seconds to compose her emotions.

‘I’m going because I want to witness the Derby County fans clapping because she deserves that, I want to be there to clap. I’m not going there to see her on the screen, I wouldn’t have known she was going to appear, that will floor me and that is not right. Madeleine is mine, she belongs to me, she doesn’t belong to them.’

The family also say the club has not made a donation to the Foundation.

Mail Sport contacted Sheffield United for comment about their lack of communication with the family. A club spokesperson said: ‘The thoughts of everyone associated with Sheffield United Football Club remain with the Cusack family, as well as Maddy’s friends, colleagues and team-mates.

‘We are pleased to be asked to host a vigil for Maddy and in the closest fixture to the anniversary of her passing – on Saturday 21st September against Derby County, the club Maddy supported – a number of initiatives are planned to supplement those that have taken place in the last 12 months.’

There are plenty of people who have supported the charity and the family have been overwhelmed by the number of strangers who have reached out with stories of how Maddy made an impact on their lives.

‘I’ve found it really comforting. I didn’t realise how much of a role model she was, to us she was just Maddy. Seeing how many people have reached out to us and expressed how much she meant to them, it shows us how important the Foundation is and why there’s a need for it. I wanted her presence to be felt and I wanted her to be heard as well. Maddy’s not here, she can’t say what she wants to say now, but we can do that through the Foundation.

‘It is difficult because, on one hand you’re trying to grieve for yourself but on the other hand you feel you’ve got a responsibility because you want to try and preserve her name. But I do find it comforting. She worked so hard to get to where she got to, a lot of hours, a lot of dedication. She did achieve her goal of playing professionally. That makes me happy knowing she achieved her goal.’

  • Is Meri Brown The True Villain In The Sister Wives Family Drama?

Is Meri Brown The True Villain In The Sister Wives Family Drama?

    Key Takeaways

    • Meri Brown has been portrayed as a villain by some within the Brown family.
    • Meri’s relationship with her children has been strained, with allegations of abuse.
    • Despite marital issues, Meri continues to defend Robyn Brown and remain hopeful for a reunion with Kody.

Fans of Sister Wives have long debated whether Meri Brown is the real villain of the reality TV show or just a scapegoat for her husband, Kody Brown.

Meri married Kody in 1990 and soon entered a polygamous lifestyle. Raised in a polygamous family with 27 siblings, Meri was just 18 years old when she met Kody at church. In 1993, the couple welcomed Janelle Brown into their family and, a year later, Christine Brown. Meri and Kody called it quits on their marriage in 2023, after Kody spent too much time with his fourth wife, Robyn Brown, and ignored his existing partners.

With four wives and 18 children, there is bound to be some drama, but could MerI be the root of all these issues or is Kody blaming her for his problems?

Meri Brown is not well-liked by her children, especially the younger members of the Brown family. Christine’s son, Paedon Brown, opened up about growing up in a polygamous household and how Meri mistreated the children. While appearing on a YouTube Live with blogger John Yates, Paedron described Meri as “not nice,” in a way that was more than “verbal.”

“Abrasive is not enough of a word to explain what Meri was to a few of us children specifically,” he explained. He was warned by his half-sister Madison, daughter of Janelle, about Meri’s behavior.

Paedon admitted that his father, Kody was unaware of Meri’s alleged abusive behavior for “several years” until Robyn recognized it.

“No, we were never safe around her.”

Paedon expressed his support for Robyn despite the tensions on the show between her and the other wives and children. “After having experienced a negative relationship, she knew how to find other negative relationships,” he explained. “Robyn probably saved several of our lives. Not definitely, but very maybe.”

Despite his negative experience with Meri, he held back giving too many details away in fear that it would negatively impact their reality show.

“It is still a financial option for all five of my parents, and many of my siblings, so I’m not going to do anything that could possibly hurt the show. I want the show to last as long as it possibly can … I know if I let certain things out there it would hurt the show.”

His sister, Gwendlyn claimed that Meri “never attacked” her and that she only witnessed Kody’s ex being “violent once.” While she admits “Meri had moments where she was rude and scary,” she doesn’t remember her ever being “physical with anyone except for Mykelti and that was only once.”

Meri Brown only shares one biological child with Kody Brown – Leon Brown, born in July 1995.

Are The Sister Wives Still Close With Meri Brown?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like most members of the Sister Wives family are close to Meri Brown. Most of them, including Janelle, Christine, and Robyn, don’t follow Meri on Instagram.

On June 10, 2024, in an episode of the Miss Understood Podcast, Meri revealed that she and the other women live busy, independent lives, which means they don’t have time to spend together. “When I see them we have cordial conversations…”

“But I don’t seek them out to have a relationship.”

“I feel like we had a lot of time to be able to do that, and in the past — a little bit over a year since I separated myself, when Kody and I separated and were done — I’ve had a lot of things I’m working on in myself.”

Although Meri doesn’t share the same tight-knit relationship the other wives have, Meri is still supportive of them. “I think it’s awesome that Janelle and Christine are close,” she said. “They were not when we were all together — they were not for all those years — so whatever’s made them close like that now, I think it’s great.”

Why Meri Brown Still Defends Robyn Brown

Despite Kody legally divorcing Meri to legally marry Robyn Brown, the two women have maintained a friendship over the years. Meri continues to defend the woman and Robyn consistently lobbied for Kody to reconcile with his first wife after her own marriage to Brown crumbled.

It seems Meri does not believe that Robyn led to the breakdown of her marriage, even declaring during the season 18 premiere of Sister Wives, “I have her back.”

Meri insisted that Kody’s marriages were in trouble long before Robyn was in the picture, and that the women should stick together. “I think for a lot of years I was like, wait a second, we’re family, we need to really stick together,” she explained.

“But then I also look at my own family that I came from, and I’ve got my own siblings that I talk to every day. I’ve got some siblings that I talk to every week. And I’ve got some that I talk to at funerals and weddings.”

In 2015, Meri Brown found herself involved in a six-month emotional affair with who she believed to be a man named Sam. However, it turned out to be a Catfish, and Meri had actually been talking to a woman. The dynamic in the Brown family shifted greatly after Meri’s Catfish relationship was forced out in the open.

Did Kody Brown Use Meri During Their Polygamous Marriage?

    Screen-Shot-2021-04-05-at-7.41.38-AM(1)
    via TLC

Some fans have argued that Meri Brown is not the real villain of Sister Wives, she was being painted that way by Kody Brown. Meri married Kody in 1993, and the couple divorced in 2014 in an effort to “legally restructure” their brood. Three months later, Kody married Robyn so that he could adopt her children from her first marriage.

Despite Meri being the first wife, Kody appears to have always appeared to prefer his other spouses. Since Sister Wives first aired in 2010, Robyn has been Kody’s favorite. Early in their marriages, Kody would often favor Christine or Janelle over Meri.

Kody even admitted on camera that he did not find his then-wife attractive, but “it doesn’t mean I’ve got any romantic inclinations within our marriage.” Despite Meri clearly working on their relationship, the couple called it quits in 2023. Despite her poor treatment, Meri continued to support Kody, hoping the couple would reunite.

Did Kody Brown Use Meri During Their Polygamous Marriage?

Inside the wild love life and complicated family of Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro – amid fallout over THAT onstage bust-up

Rocker Dave Navarro is back in the headlines after his band spectacularly imploded on stage.

Dave, 57, who is the original guitarist for ’90s alt-rockers Jane’s Addiction, got into a fight with bandmate Perry Farrell in the middle of a show in Boston last week.

Footage captured at the concert showed Farrell, 65, in a physical altercation with Navarro during the band’s hit Mountain Song.

The onstage fracas prompted Dave to scuttle the remaining dates on the band’s first tour in 14 years featuring the original lineup.

‘Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour,’ Navarro said in a statement.

He continued: ‘Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs.’

Navarro’s complicated career has paralleled his equally tumultuous love life over the years.

The rocker has been married three times, and counts among his many lovers porn stars Stormy Daniels, Sasha Gray and Jenna Jameson.

Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro's tumultuous onstage career has been reflected in his personal life with multiple marriages, romantic interests and public battles with drug and alcohol addiction.

Dave has also been linked with the likes of pop star Fiona Apple and MAXIM model Tania Donaldson.

His first marriage was to celebrity make-up artist Tania Goddard Saylor.

That union was short-lived however, with the couple divorcing two years after their 1990 nuptials.

His next marriage was even briefer – famously lasting just five days.

Dave joined Jane's Addiction back in 1996, before the band imploded, due to infighting and personal tensions in 1991

Rhian Gittins tied the knot with Navarro on October 15, 1994.

They divorced on October 20 of that same year, making it one of the shortest celebrity unions in history.

Navarro’s next relationship was with actress and model Carmen Electra.

Dave met the former Baywatch Star in the early 2000s and quickly captured media attention as an ‘it’ couple.

That attention when their relationship was writ large on the screen in the reality show Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen and Dave, which ran for seven episodes on MTV in 2004.

Viewers got a sneak peek behind the scenes as the popular couple planned their nuptials, with the series culminating on the big wedding day.

However, that relationship proved doomed too, and the couple eventually called it quits two years later in 2006.

Despite the split, in 2019, Electra shared a sweet sentiment to her ex on social media to celebrate his birthday.

Sharing a picture from their wedding day, Electra wrote:  ‘Happy Birthday @davenavarro my eternal love for u is beyond words.

‘We had this strange understanding for each other that resulted in lots of laughter , fun & and understanding ! Ty 4 letting me be my true self and not judging my flaws . I mean …. the time out system really worked. So grateful we are still friends ! I love u DN #happybirthday #tildeathdouspart.’

Dave joined Jane’s Addiction back in 1986, before the band imploded, due to infighting and personal tensions in 1991.

He was earmarked to become the replacement guitarist for Izzy Stradlin in iconic rock band Guns N Roses – but reportedly never showed up.

He also had a stint in funk-punk rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers, with that union producing the band’s 2005 album One Hot Minute.

After a couple of Jane’s Addiction reunions, the band reunited for a third time in 2022, this time without Navarro, who had been sidelined due to Long COVID.

And Dave’s tumultuous onstage career has been reflected in his personal life, with multiple marriages, romantic interests and public battles with drug and alcohol addiction.

Both Navarro’s mother and aunt were murdered by his mother’s ex-boyfriend John Riccardi in 1983.

He was ultimately arrested after being featured on America’s Most Wanted.

Navarro released a documentary in 2015 called Mourning Son, which details the harrowing ordeal.

Speaking to the Huffington Post at the time of the film’s release, Navarro said he didn’t realise the film was a statement on domestic violence until he was in the middle of making it.

‘I think that’s partly because I was so close to the events as a child, especially being in the 1980s, those words weren’t really thrown around,” he said.

‘As we were putting the project together, it dawned on me that that’s what I’m talking about.’

Dave has also had his fair share of struggles with addiction too, stemming from the grief over his mother’s death.

After the breakup of Jane’s Addiction in 1991, Dave checked himself into rehab and attempted to get sober.

Turning to a vegan diet and healthy lifestyle he would stay clean for around five years before relapsing in 1997.

Speaking to Adam Carolla in 2022 Dave revealed he hadn’t used intravenous drugs for nearly two decades and had been sober for four years.

‘There is a lot of shame that comes with addiction, with depression, with mental illness, and I’ve suffered from not only addiction but mental health issues myself,’ he revealed on the podcast.

‘One of the things that prevents people from asking for help is the shame. The facts are shame hasn’t saved anybody. Shame is what keeps people dying.’

  • For Matt and Abby Poitras, hockey runs in the family

For Matt and Abby Poitras, hockey runs in the family

But wait, there’s more. On Labor Day weekend, Matthew and Abby drove from the North Andover campus to Foxborough, and sat in the Gillette stands to watch older brother Adam, 23, a pro lacrosse player, suit up as a midfielder for the PLL’s Maryland Whipsnakes.

On a splendid New England day, it was a Poitras family reunion of sorts, approximately 600 miles from their hometown of Whitby, Ontario.

“Yeah, kind of crazy when you think about it,” Matthew said days later, musing over the various career paths of the Poitras siblings and their sports achievements and aspirations. “If you told all of us that 10 years ago, I don’t know if we’d believe you. I think we’d all be like, ‘Crazy how it’s all gone and to think we’d all be in the same spot at once.’ It’s awesome.”

Back home in Whitby, Tricia Poitras sounded especially delighted during a telephone interview that son Matthew and daughter Abby have landed so close together. They argued incessantly as kids, acknowledged Tricia, but they’re close pals now. To have Matthew so nearby provides some extra comfort for a mom whose daughter is living away from home for the first time.

“My kids are very, very close,” noted Tricia, “so it’s very nice to know if she needed anything, he would be there at a moment’s notice.”

Matthew and Abby worked out together a few times this summer, including on-ice sessions at Warrior with their skating coach, Ashley Jones. But by and large, they forged their hockey paths separate from one another, in part because Matthew is 23 months older, as well as the fact that girls and boys in their part of Ontario, even at grammar school age, rarely play on the same teams. It’s not like, say, rural Manitoba, where Bruins center Morgan Geekie and Emma Coulter, the woman who became his wife, played on the same team and on the same line when they were ages 10-14. When the Poitras kids were at home, though, it was a different story. When really young, Abby and her brothers were avid participants in mini-sticks, setting up their tiny nets between doorways near the kitchen and family room.

“Oh, yeah,” recalled Tricia, a project manager for Johnson & Johnson, “we had to patch a lot of walls.” As they grew older and bigger, the action moved to the basement, with a hockey net set up at one end, a lacrosse net at the other.

“We replaced a lot of insulation down there, knocked down and torn up from pucks and lacrosse balls,” said Tricia. “The washer and dryer were spared. They’re upstairs, thank goodness.”

The three Poitras kids played both sports, with Adam and Matthew deciding by their early teens to concentrate on their preferred sport. Abby, who began playing hockey at age 5, moved on earlier to playing only hockey, and always chose defense.

At near 5 feet 9 inches, Abby is only 2-3 inches shorter than Matthew. The two bear a strong facial resemblance. As for their games, well, position alone provides a major difference.

“I’d say not really,” said Abby, asked if she felt she and her brother, the hopeful second-year Bruins center, were the same style of player. “But it’s hard to tell, because I’m on D and he’s a center.”

“Good stick, and a very high hockey IQ,” said Matthew, offering his view of his sister’s game. “She likes to carry the puck. I think we’re probably the same that way; we like to have the puck on our stick.”

Matt Poitras (far right) posted five goals and 10 assists in 33 games for the Bruins last season.John Tlumacki/Globe Staff

For choice of music, Abby is all-in on country, with Zach Bryan, Morgan Wallen, and Luke Combs at the top of her playlist. She’s eagerly looking forward to her first trip to Nashville at the end of November, when Merrimack plays in the Smashville Women’s Collegiate Hockey Showcase.

Matthew is also down with the same western vibe, but like his father Phil, he likes a lot of classic rock as well as The Tragically Hip, the popular Canadian rock group that originated in Kingston, Ontario. Aside: Your aged faithful puck chronicler was rocked to learn Matthew knew nothing of the extensive works of Joni Mitchell, legendary songstress of Fort Macleod, Alberta.

Time permitting, Abby and Matthew said, they are eager to see each other during the hockey season, though their schedules could be hard to align.

Matthew still has to find out if he’ll be suiting up in Black and Gold in Boston or Providence. Wherever he’s based, half the season will be spent on the road. Leisure time is rare.

Abby knows exactly where she’ll be for the school year, but downtime is scarce for a Division 1 student-athlete. She is majoring in health sciences, with an eye on becoming a nurse or nurse practitioner. She feels fortunate, too, that college women now have the real option of pursuing a path to play pro hockey.

“I think about it,” she said. “It’s really cool, as I’ve grown up, that it’s changed so much. I think it’s cool that it’s expanding and the dream of so many girls now actually can be attained.”

Membership in the Poitras family hockey franchise also has its perks, of course, a fact not lost on Abby or her teammates. It’s good to have a brother who, prior to his shoulder injury, was a surprisingly comfortable fit in the NHL last season.

“They want to go to games,” said a smiling Abby, asked what her sister Warriors make of her brother on the Bruins. “They’re all like, ‘When can we go to games?’ Yeah, they think it’s cool.”

  • Gas Stove Safety Tips Everyone In Your Family Should Know

Gas Stove Safety Tips Everyone In Your Family Should Know

Let’s be real – gas stoves are the heart of almost every Indian kitchen. Whether you’re whipping up some rotis, sabzi, dal, or just heating water for tea, we use our gas stoves a lot. But with great convenience comes great responsibility! If you’re not careful, things can go from ‘yum’ to ‘yikes’ pretty quickly. Don’t worry, though – we’ve got your back. Here are some essential safety tips that’ll keep your kitchen safe and sound. Share this with your family, and let’s all stay safe while cooking up a storm!

    1. Double-Check Those Burners Every Time

It’s easy to forget, but once you’re done cooking, always check that every burner is off. Don’t leave the stove unattended while it’s on, and absolutely don’t ignore a burner if it’s not lighting up right away. If that happens, turn it off ASAP, open a window, and wait a bit before trying again. And before you hit the bed, give the stove one final check. Safety first, always!

    2. Keep It Clean – No Excuses

Look, we all know cleaning isn’t fun, but a dirty stove is way more dangerous than you think. Food particles and grease can clog the burner and lead to potential gas leaks. Yikes! A quick wipe-down with a damp cloth after every use can save you a lot of hassle (and risk). Got stubborn stains? A little soap and scrub action will do the trick. Trust us, your stove – and your safety – will thank you.

    3. Inflammable = Trouble

Here’s a golden rule: anything that can catch fire should not be near your gas stove. Think plastic bags, wooden spoons, towels, and even those medicine bottles lying around. Keep all that stuff far away from the flames. It’s not just about the person cooking – everyone in the house should know this rule to avoid any accidents.

    4. Ditch the Loose Clothes

This one’s super important! Don’t wear loose-fitting clothes or flowy dupattas while cooking. They might seem harmless, but they can easily brush against the flame. Opt for well-fitted clothes, and steer clear of synthetic fabrics like polyester. And if you’ve got long hair, tie it up in a bun or ponytail before you start cooking. Safety tip: Hair + fire = not a good combo!

    5. Smart Handling of Utensils

When using the stove, ensure you’re placing your pots and pans correctly. A small pot on a large burner is just asking for trouble. Keep the flame under the vessel, not around it. And hey, if your pot has handles, position them to the side so you don’t accidentally knock it over. No one wants a hot mess (literally)!

Follow these simple tips and keep your kitchen accident-free. Now go on and share this with your family because safety starts at home!

  • Everything you need to know about Christian McCaffrey’s family: dad, mom, siblings…

Everything you need to know about Christian McCaffrey’s family: dad, mom, siblings…

Back in February, San Francisco 49ers running-back Christian McCaffrey realized one of his dreams by playing in his first ever Super Bowl. He had 22 carries for 80 yards and scored one touchdown, and despite ending on the losing side, he had at least wrote a new chapter in a family tradition.

    A Super Bowl-winning dad

His father, Ed McCaffrey, won three Super Bowls during a 13-year NFL career that saw him earn Pro Bowl honours in 1998. Albeit only for a season, he too played for the 49ers, helping San Francisco to victory over the San Diego Chargers at Super Bowl XXIX.

A graduate of Stanford University’s college football programme, Ed started out in the NFL with the New York Giants in 1991, before following up his 1994 spell at the 49ers with a hugely successful eight-year stint at the Denver Broncos. In Colorado, he played his part in back-to-back Super Bowl triumphs in 1997 and 1998, leading Broncos fans to vote him into the franchise’s 50th anniversary team in 2009.

Post-retirement, Ed’s most significant coaching role so far came when he was placed in charge of college football team the Northern Colorado Bears at the end of 2019. The 56-year-old was fired from the position in November 2021.

“Like a cheat code right in your own home”

Speaking to NBC last year, Christian spoke of the influence his father had on him as a youngster, as he took his first steps in football. “Here’s a guy who did it the right way and played 13 years in the NFL and won three Super Bowls, been to a Pro Bowl, he’s been cut, he’s been traded, he’s been at the highest of the game,” he said. “That’s like a cheat code right in your own home, use that to your advantage. I tried to do that as much as possible.”

    Soccer-star mother, football-playing brothers

During his four years at Stanford, Ed met his wife Lisa Sime, who at the time was one of the leading lights in the California university’s women’s soccer team. “For me, it was love at first sight,” Ed declared in an interview with the Denver Post in 1999. Married in 1992, the couple went on to have four sons – all of whom followed their father into football.

Christian’s older brother, Max, is a former wide receiver who played for Duke at college level, before moving between several teams during a short NFL career. Between 2019 and 2019, he was on the rosters at the Oakland Raiders, the Green Bay Packers, the New Orleans Saints, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the 49ers. Max is now an offensive assistant on the coaching staff at the Miami Dolphins.

Ed and Lisa’s third son, Dylan, played in the college game for the Michigan Wolverines, before transferring to Northern Colorado in 2021 to work under his father. The quarterback appeared 21 times for the Bears in 2021 and 2022.

Finally, Christian’s youngest brother, Luke, is a college-football wide receiver whose impressive displays for the Rice Owls in 2023 saw him named in the American Athletic Conference’s All-Conference First Team. The 22-year-old has been selected for this weekend’s 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl, a major invitational game that gives college prospects a chance to showcase their talents in front of NFL coaches, executives and scouts.

“Pretty much every [general manager] in the National Football League will be there,” Owls head coach Mike Bloomgren told the Rice Thresher. “All these scouts will be there. It’ll be a chance for him to go against literally the best because this is the top all-star game in America.”

    Medal-winning Olympian

Beyond Christian’s nuclear family, there is also significant sporting pedigree. Ed’s brother Billy was a national college basketball champion with Duke in 1991 – and, most significantly, Christian’s maternal grandfather, Dave Sime, was an Olympic medal-winning track athlete, taking silver in the 100m dash at the 1960 Summer Games in Rome.

“Lisa’s dad, that’s the real star of the family,” Ed’s former Broncos team-mate Brian Griese, now the 49ers’ quarterbacks coach, told Newsweek in 2015.
