    Your Favorite Athlete’s Favorite Sport

It’s hard to argue with how cool golf is these days. In fact, beyond perhaps peak – Tiger Woods in the early 2000s, the sport has likely not had as big a moment as what it’s going through right now.

That’s, in large part, due to the athletes of other sports who have picked up the game and unabashedly said that they like – love! – the game just as much as anyone else.

From accountants to zookeepers, golf is a game for everyone – including those at the top of their game.

Caitlin Clark is a perfect example.

The WNBA superstar and the league’s rookie of the year this past season said, after her team, the Indiana Fever, were eliminated from the playoffs, that she planned to play golf until it became too cold in Indiana and her off- season plans included, jokingly, to try to become a pro.

“Everybody thought I was serious. I was not serious. I love it. I love being outside and making it competitive with my friends,” Clark said in November.

“It’s challenging and getting to come here and be around the best and have a good time is what I’m looking forward to.”

    Caitlin Clark and Nelly Korda

‘Here’ in this instance was teeing it up alongside world No. 1 Nelly Korda – and the icon herself, Annika Sorenstam – in an LPGA Tour pro-am a few weeks ago at Pelican Golf Club in Florida. She also pegged it with Zach Johnson at the pro-am for The RSM Classic the following week. That was her third time playing alongside the pros, as she played the pro-am at the John Deere Classic while she was attending Iowa in 2023.

“She gets it,” Johnson, a 2023 American Ryder Cup captain, said. “We’ve witnessed that time and time again, and still witnessing that … She’s in rare air; we talk about her talent on the court, and she’s raised the bar, she’s pushed the ceiling up in, frankly, women’s sports, but women’s basketball… but I say all that, she’s an even better person off the court. She’s quality all the way.

“She’s trying to play a lot … it’s hard; she’s got priorities, but she loves the game. It’s a good escape for her, as it should be.”

    Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes

Professional athletes turning to golf is certainly not a new phenomenon.

They’ve teed it up at various PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events and it’s often they’re inside the ropes at events around the world. Michael Jordan’s golf stories are legendary. Hockey players, baseball players, soccer stars, and NFL studs like the Kelce brothers (Travis and Jason) are all golfers.

Plenty are now involved with the game in a variety of ways including some like Derek Jeter and Eli Manning joining the investment group of the new New York Golf Club of the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy – founded TGL.

    Steph Curry

    Steph Curry

Stephen Curry, the Golden State Warriors NBA star, is, perhaps, involved in golf more than any other athlete these days. He teed it up on the Korn Ferry Tour a few. years ago, has a +1 handicap, was named the 2023 Ambassador of Golf Award winner by the PGA Tour. His impact in golf goes well beyond the course, as he, in 2019, partnered with Howard University to bring a DI golf team to the school for both men and women. He also, in 2021, founded UNDERRATED Golf, a purpose driven business endeavor with the overarching commitment to provide equity, access and opportunity to student-athletes from every community by balancing participation in the sport to truly reflect our society.

“It’s something about this game,” Curry told NBA.com recently. “I don’t know how to explain it, but it brings a lot out of you.”

    But what is that something?

“It’s become a purpose for them, it’s something they can pour themselves into,” Charlene Bendt, the PGA Golf Professional at Gentle Creek Country Club in Texas, says about why retired athletes – or just athletes in general – find solace in the game.

Bendt, who has been a PGA pro for 10 years, worked under Jaime Mulligan – the 2021 Teacher of the Year – and played college golf at UCLA. She tells a fun story of how, at a clinic with players on the Dallas Wings of the WNBA, many were just getting started with the game. But once someone suggested a little competition, the women completely switched their approach to things.

    Josh Allen

    Josh Allen

“All of a sudden, these girls – who are obviously super unbelievable athletes – looked completely different. They went from lighthearted to locked in. You could feel it and you could see it and they all performed better too,” says Bendt. “When there’s something on the line, the girls that even really struggled, they were doing it. It was really neat. And fun to see, too.”

There are obvious, well-documented physical benefits to golf – even for professional athletes – but the mental side of the sport has been the thing that Bendt has seen amongst athletes as a key prompt of joy.

“One of the surprising parts when you’re retiring – as an athlete – you’re losing a bit of certain identity and maybe there is a void there and golf can really fill that void,” she explains. “The comradarie is a big piece of it (and) what has amazed me over the years is how much people are getting out of the mental aspect of golf.

“You’re in the same place with your mind and your body and it’s source of why it’s healthy for people. It can be a moving version of a meditation where you have to get really narrow and specific for one thing at least for a few seconds. That’s a great skill for us to have and a very positive thing for mental health.”

So, whether you play backyard baseball or launch dingers at Dodger Stadium (or used to), golf continues to show it’s a game for all, and it’s never been cooler to play this game. “(Athletes) can challenge themselves in different ways, see personal growth, and celebrate all the little wins along the way,” Bendt says. “It’s such a cool part.”

‘You’ve gone quiet’… Paddy Pimblett calls radio station to confront presenter trash-talking his favorite soccer team

A trash-talking radio host was shocked when Paddy Pimblett called to confront him on Tuesday evening.

‘The Baddy’ is known to MMA fans as the blonde-haired Englishman who has defied expectations to go 6-0 in the UFC and earn his place among the lightweight top 15.

When he’s not training for a fight, Pimblett is usually doing food challenges or watching his favorite soccer team, Liverpool FC.

So, when a radio presenter began trash-talking his hometown club after their latest win, the 29-year-old got on the phone and playfully put him in his place.

    Paddy Pimblett defends his team

Jason Cundy is a former professional soccer player, who notably played for one of Liverpool’s biggest rivals, Chelsea, during his career, which came to an end in the year 2000.

Since then, he’s become a popular pundit on the radio station talkSPORT, where he was voicing his grievances with Pimblett’s team after they recorded an impressive 4-0 win over German side Bayer Leverkusen.

Cundy complained about the club’s famous anthem, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, which fans of the club sing before every game that takes place at Anfield stadium, where Pimblett hopes to headline a UFC event before his career is over.

The 54-year-old went on the take issue with Liverpool’s good form under new manager Arne Slot, who has shocked everyone by winning 14 of his first 16 games at the helm.

“They’re starting to annoy me now, they just get results,” Cundy said. “You know they’re good, but then you come away thinking 4-0? They just spanked Leverkusen 4-0?

“I think there’s probably more to come from this Liverpool side, that’s what’s worrying me.”

Cundy was talking to a Liverpool fan, who just happened to be sitting next to Pimblett. The UFC superstar snatched the phone and started giving his thoughts on the club’s good form.

“I did expect this,” he said. “Before Slot came, I said Jurgen [Klopp] was our generation’s [Bill] Shankly and Arne Slot was going to be our generation’s [Bob] Paisley. He’s going to win more than Jurgen did, and I can’t wait to be proved right.”

Cundy went quiet as Pimblett talked up his team, and it didn’t go unnoticed. The retired soccer player’s co-host pointed out that he had stopped complaining about Liverpool after being confronted by a world-class fighter

Jamie O’Hara commented: “You’ve gone a bit quiet now haven’t you!”

Cundy remained quiet until Pimblett hung up. Only then did he decide to come out of his shell with a comment that suggested he thinks Pimblett couldn’t hurt a fly, saying: “He’s all mouth and no trousers, Paddy.”

Cundy added with a laugh: “He’s not still there, is he?”

When is Paddy Pimblett’s next fight?

Unless he bumps into Cundy, it seems Pimblett will not be fighting until 2025.

Famously, he has a tough time making lightweight. Pimblett is known for ballooning in weight when he’s not in camp, so he needs extra time to ensure he makes the 156lb lightweight limit safely.

With the year almost over, the popular Englishman doesn’t feel confident he could make weight correctly and says the only way he’ll fight before 2024 is over is if the UFC offers him a big-name welterweight opponent.

Pimblett said in October: “It’s too late now to make lightweight for the UFC events at the end of the year. I’d rather not kill myself trying to make weight – but if they want to get me Colby [Covington] or McGregor at welterweight, I’d do it.

“I’d fight either at welterweight because they aren’t massive welterweights. I don’t think many welterweights are that big compared to me. I only realized how big of a lightweight I am when I fought Bobby.”

Amidst Historic Season, Franklin Football’s Defensive Coordinator is a Fan Favorite

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – The Franklin County Seahawks, a football team that hasn’t seen much success in it’s short history. But now, the players, coaches, fans, and community are living through history. The team’s defensive coordinator Brock Johnson is one of the many reasons for Franklin’s success. But his other title other than ‘coach’, is Officer Johnson, the school’s student resource officer.

“They see a different side of me once I take off my normal uniform but I think the respect and everything is still there. They know that I care about them and it’s not just sports. I’ve helped them outside of school and everything and I see them away from school and it’s always Coach. You know I don’t want them calling me officer or mister. It’s a great relationship I have with these kids and I’m really appreciative of it.” Coach Johnson said.

After Coach John Cooper was made the head coach last year, he brought Coach Johnson along with him. Not only did Coach Cooper know that Coach Johnson had the football knowledge to do the job, he knew he’d be able to make relationships with the kids as an SRO.

“Sometimes an SRO has a little bit more break time than what a teacher does just different schedules and stuff you know if a student not just an athlete but maybe a student needs somebody to talk, he’s there right there so not only do they get that during the school day but they also get on the football field the baseball diamond so you know it’s just great mentorship 24/7 almost.”

Being an offensive player in high school, the defense was something Coach Johnson was a little unfamiliar with. Except the fact that his dad was a longtime defensive coordinator at Appalachia High School, so Coach Johnson was always in the film room with him.

“It kind of just wore on me you know I kind of grew to love it cause you know like I used to all my friends when they would be out riding the streets so to speak, you know, I would be having to watch game field with my dad and I didn’t like it at the time growing up, cause I wanna be with my guys but it kind of gave me a better understanding of the game.”

All Coach Johnson wants during his time as coach at Franklin, is to see his players and the community succeed.

“You know he wanted me out here and trust me, I told him I’m on my way man cause it’s like there’s nothing more that I want than to see this school and this community get what they deserve out here on this football field.”

‘It’s a passion that her whole family shares,’ Adan continued. ‘I was just a lucky guy that said hi. I didn’t really know who I was saying hi to.’

He further gushed, ‘I just knew, she’s gorgeous. And if I would’ve known, I probably would’ve stuttered my way right out it.’

In regards to her horse riding skills, Banuelos said, ‘She’s very natural, very good at it. All animals, not only horses, love her. Her lifestyle is a lot of fashion and it looks glamorous and this and that, but at heart, she’s a cowgirl.’
