  • What Is Eggnog? How You Can Make This Popular Festive Drink This Christmas

What Is Eggnog? How You Can Make This Popular Festive Drink This Christmas

Eggnog is one of the most beloved holiday beverages, especially popular during Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. Its creamy texture, rich flavour, and festive spices make it the perfect drink to cosy up with on a cold winter evening. But what exactly is eggnog, and why has it become a staple of Christmas traditions? Let’s explore the history of this iconic drink, its significance in holiday celebrations, and how you can make your own eggnog this Christmas.

Also Read: Christmas Around The World – 9 Popular Foods That Form The Tradition

    What is Eggnog?

Eggnog is a traditional holiday drink made from a base of milk, cream, sugar, whipped eggs, and spices, typically flavoured with nutmeg and cinnamon. It’s known for its smooth, custard-like consistency and its rich, sweet taste. While eggnog is often served cold, it can also be enjoyed warm, and it’s frequently spiked with alcohol, such as rum, bourbon, or brandy, to add an extra festive kick.

The drink has a long history, dating back to medieval Europe, where early versions of eggnog were enjoyed by the aristocracy. These early versions were often made with milk, eggs, and alcohol, but they were more similar to a milk punch than the modern eggnog we know today. As the recipe evolved, eggnog became more refined, especially in North America, where it gained popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries.

    The Christmas Tradition of Eggnog

Eggnog’s association with Christmas likely comes from its rich, indulgent nature, making it the perfect drink for the holiday season. In the United States, it became a popular tradition during the Colonial era, particularly in New England. The drink was often served at Christmas parties, and its festive flavour and warming properties made it ideal for the cold winter months.

In the early days, eggnog was consumed by the wealthy because the ingredients (milk, eggs, and alcohol) were considered luxuries. Over time, however, it became a treat that families of all social classes could enjoy. Today, eggnog is enjoyed by people of all ages, though many choose to serve a non-alcoholic version for children and those who prefer to skip the booze.

For many, eggnog is a symbol of Christmas nostalgia, a drink that evokes images of cosy family gatherings, twinkling lights, and cheerful holiday spirits. It’s a drink that brings people together, whether it’s enjoyed at a holiday dinner, a Christmas party, or simply on a quiet evening by the fireplace.

How to Make Eggnog This Christmas I Eggnog Recipe

Making eggnog at home is a fun and festive way to celebrate the Christmas season, and it’s surprisingly easy to prepare. While you can buy ready-made eggnog at most grocery stores during the holidays, homemade eggnog offers a richer, more personalized flavour. Here’s a simple recipe for making classic eggnog that will impress your guests and make your holiday season even more special.

    Ingredients:

    4 large eggs
1/2 cup of sugar (plus extra for sweetness)
    2 cups whole milk
    1 cup heavy cream
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (plus extra for garnish)
    1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup rum, bourbon, or brandy (optional)
    A pinch of salt

    Instructions:

Start by separating the egg yolks from the whites. In a medium bowl, beat the egg yolks with the sugar until the mixture becomes thick and pale in colour. This should take about 3 minutes.

In a saucepan, combine the milk, cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally. You don’t want it to boil, just warm it up until it’s hot but not bubbling.

Once the milk mixture is heated, slowly pour it into the egg yolk mixture while continuously whisking. This process, called “tempering,” helps to gradually raise the eggs’ temperature.

Once the egg mixture is combined with the milk and cream, pour it back into the saucepan. Heat it over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly. Be careful not to let it boil, or the eggs may curdle.

Add Alcohol (Optional): If you’re making alcoholic eggnog, add your rum, bourbon, or brandy now, and stir well.

Once your eggnog has thickened, remove it from the heat and let it cool to room temperature. Then, transfer it to the refrigerator and chill for at least 2 hours. When ready to serve, pour the eggnog into glasses, and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon.

For a non-alcoholic version, simply skip the alcohol and enjoy the rich, creamy flavour of the classic eggnog.

Whether you’re serving it at a holiday dinner, sipping it by the fire, or sharing it with friends and family, eggnog adds a touch of festive cheer to any gathering. This Christmas, consider making your own homemade eggnog to elevate your holiday celebrations. With its rich flavour, creamy texture, and warm spices, eggnog is sure to become a favourite in your holiday traditions. So, get your ingredients ready, gather your loved ones, and raise a glass of eggnog to celebrate the magic of Christmas!

  • 5 Styling Lessons From Mouni Roys Festive Looks

5 Styling Lessons From Mouni Roys Festive Looks

Last night, Mouni Roy stepped out in a white and gold lehenga saree and had all the paparazzi vying to get her shots. That’s understandable given the Naagin actor was looking like a goddess with that jewellery and makeup. We realised it was time to revisit all her festive looks and draw some styling lessons that everybody could take inspiration from.

5 Styling lessons from Mouni Roy

Her festive looks this year were replete with ivory, red and gold.

    1. Go golden or go home

    © Instagram/imouniroy

This time around, Mouni incorporated a lot of gold tones in her looks. You’ll see how almost every festive look was enhanced by a golden border. This easy-breezy lehenga has golden highlights in all the kalis and she has matched those with her blouse. The ethnic look is a treat thanks to the kiran lace and her parandi.

    2. One can get ‘red-y’ in no time

    © Instagram/imouniroy

Her pick for the day was a full-sleeved sindoori red lehenga saree with no detailed work except a golden lace. In such ensembles, you’d usually see a statement back and these criss-cross latkans pass the vibe check. Go with your timeless gold jewellery for a festive look that inspires and don’t shy away from adding an OTT maang tikka.

    3. Jhumka brigade is winning

    © Instagram/imouniroy

Even for Karva Chauth, Mouni’s pick was a red saree with a golden blouse, clearly indicating that nothing screams bridal and festive more than these two colours. You see how a pair of jhumkas would go with absolutely anything. Sit up and take notes, and remember to never underestimate the power of a red bindi.

    4. Look like a dream in ivory

    © Instagram/imouniroy

If it’s Mouni Roy, it has to be sexy. No matter the occasion, an ivory saree has become a staple. Mouni’s net saree with an asymmetrical scalloped border is an easy yet impactful pick for any day. When it comes to makeup, the Dussehra look was all about smokey eyes and a neatly tied bun.

    5. Roses are red…

    © Instagram/imouniroy

For Navratri celebrations, Mouni wore a yellow lehenga with a plunging neckline and adorned her hair with red roses. Now, had it been no flowers, it would be just another basic look. But she once again highlighted the importance of playing around with your hair to stand out. Moreover, she barely had any festive look without the maangtikka.

    6. Chokers have her on a chokehold

    © Instagram/imouniroy

Another of those lehenga sarees with a golden border and still, it doesn’t look repetitive. I felt that her cowrie-shell adorned hair extensions were the star of the look. The Naagin actor would always pay heed to her jewellery, which is largely dominated by chokers. The white beaded set with a pop of pastel green is such a versatile piece to add to your collection.

  • Refresh Your Skin After All That Festive Feasting – Try These Expert Detox Tips!

Refresh Your Skin After All That Festive Feasting – Try These Expert Detox Tips!

After the festive indulgences of Diwali, many of us find our skin in need of a little TLC. With rich foods and sweets taking centre stage during the celebrations, a detox is essential to restore balance and radiance. To guide us through this post-festival detox, we turn to experts Gaurav Verma, Regional Director of Art of Living Yoga, and Kaushani Desai, Ayurveda Cooking Expert, who share simple yet powerful dietary tips to rejuvenate your skin.

Also Read: The 7-Day Detox Diet Plan: Time To Get Healthy And Active

Here Are 7 Diet Tips For Post Diwali Detox:

    1. Start Your Day with Lemon Water

One of the simplest and most effective ways to kickstart your detox is with a glass of lemon water. According to Gaurav Verma, this humble drink acts as a “magic potion” for digestion and detoxification. Lemon water stimulates the liver to produce bile, facilitating easier digestion of food. To prepare, simply squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a glass of warm water and consume it first thing in the morning.

For an Ayurvedic twist, consider boiling a pot of water, allowing it to cool, and sipping it throughout the day. Kaushani Desai emphasizes that boiling the water lends it an energy that purifies the body, making it an excellent addition to your detox routine.

    2. Incorporate Steamed Sprouts

Sprouts are a powerhouse of nutrients that benefit not just your body but also your skin and hair. They are rich in antioxidants, which help prevent tissue corrosion and omega-3 fats that contribute to glowing skin. Steaming sprouts makes them easier to digest, maximizing their health benefits.

Gaurav suggests incorporating a variety of sprouts into your meals, whether as a salad base, in soups or simply as a snack. This wonder food boosts immunity and purifies the blood, making it a fantastic option for post-festival rejuvenation.

    3. Drink Spiced Water

Indian spices are not only flavorful but also incredibly beneficial for health. Kaushani Desai recommends soaking whole spices like fennel (saunf), cumin (jeera), or fenugreek seeds in water for a few hours or overnight. Strain and drink this spiced water to experience an instant energy boost.

You can also infuse your regular drinking water with herbs and spices such as ajwain, lemon slices, tulsi, and neem leaves. This not only enhances hydration but also provides your body with vital nutrients that support detoxification.

Detox water is great for skin and overall health.

    4. Avoid Sugar and Salt

Nutritionist Rupali Datta advises keeping a keen eye on your sugar and salt intake during this detox phase. She suggests aiming to eliminate regular sugar from your diet entirely. Instead, switch to natural sweeteners like jaggery and honey, which can satisfy your sweet cravings without the guilt.

Reducing salt can also help prevent water retention and bloating, making you feel lighter and more energetic. By making these small changes, you can significantly impact your skin’s appearance and overall health.

    5. Enjoy Vegetable Juices and Smoothies

Dietitian Gagan Sidhu emphasizes the importance of incorporating vegetable juices and smoothies into your daily routine. These beverages are not only delicious but also nutrient-dense, helping to restore balance to your skin.

Popular options include orange juice, pomegranate juice, or smoothies made with cucumber, beetroot, and bananas. These choices provide essential vitamins and minerals while keeping you full, reducing the temptation to snack on unhealthy foods. Plus, the antioxidants in these drinks promote a healthy glow.

    6. Snack on Dry Fruits and Nuts

Incorporating dry fruits and nuts into your diet can work wonders for your skin. Raisins, dates, almonds, walnuts, and cashews are all excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. They contain antioxidant properties that protect your skin from free radicals and environmental damage.

Start your day with a handful of these nutritious snacks. They not only help boost collagen production but also retain your skin’s glow, supporting your detox efforts from the inside out.

    7. Ginger and Lemon Detox Drink

Finally, combining ginger and lemon can be a powerful detox solution. Lemon is known for its detoxifying properties and aids in flushing out toxins. Ginger, on the other hand, is rich in antioxidants and improves blood circulation, which is vital for healthy skin.

To create your morning detox drink, mix lukewarm water with a few drops of lemon and some freshly grated ginger. Alternatively, ginger lemon tea is a soothing option that provides similar benefits. This drink invigorates your body and sets a positive tone for the day.

By implementing these seven expert diet tips, you can effectively detox your skin post-Diwali and restore its natural radiance.

  • Diwali 2024 Special: 9 Healthy Food Tips For The Festive Feast

Diwali 2024 Special: 9 Healthy Food Tips For The Festive Feast

The festive season is upon us and our excitement is on an all-time high. After celebrating Navratri, Durga Puja, Karwa Chauth, we are now celebrating the festival of lights – Diwali. One of the most significant festivals among the Hindus, Diwali (or Deepavali) is celebrated across India with much fun and enthusiasm. And food plays a significant role in the celebrations. While it is difficult to say no to festive delicacies, healthy eating often goes for a toss during this time of the year. However, fret not! You don’t need to completely let go of your favourite treats during the festivities – instead, just swap them with something healthier.

Make your festive eating healthy with these easy diet tips

Here Are 9 Food Tips You Can Try During The Festive Season:

    Consider Sugar Substitutes

Festivals are not complete without sweet dishes, no matter how many there are. Consuming delicious sweets can certainly affect your health, making you vulnerable to weight gain and more susceptible to diseases like diabetes. Add natural sweeteners such as dates, cardamom, anjeer, and saffron to kheer, halva, fruit salad, and rava sheera.

    Switch To Simple Soda

If you are out for drinking, switch the sweet syrups, sweetened carbonated beverages and fruit juices for plain soda or sparkling water. Apart from reducing the calories considerably, it will help you reduce your total sugar consumption.

    Consider Roasting Instead Of Frying

Here is a solution to keep you from overindulging in fried foods during the festival season. Consider roasting all those food items that you would normally fry. Roasted foods not only taste good, but also provide some promising health benefits. It improves the texture and deepens the flavour profile of what you’re cooking. Instead of frying all the wadas, samosas, bhajias, spring rolls and cutlets, roast them to have healthy food during Diwali.

Go for roasted food instead of fried

    Introduce Real Food-Based Dips

If you are used to dipping your kebabs and cutlets in mayonnaise, try curd (yoghurt) -based dips that are lower in calories and fat and are healthier for you. Yoghurt is packed with protein, crammed with calcium, and popped with probiotics. Else opt for the famous Indian chutneys be it the spicy green coriander chutney or the sweet yet tangy tamarind chutney.

Swap The White And Milk Chocolate

While it can be fun to get a whole bar of chocolate to yourself, eating too much puts you at risk of gaining weight. Try switching to dark chocolate this season rather than gifting white and milk chocolates. While white chocolate actually contains no cocoa and therefore provides none of the health benefits, the cocoa in dark chocolate has antioxidants, which can help prevent excess weight gain.

    Reach For The Cinnamon Tea

It’s easy to consume too much sugar during the festive season, so if you feel yourself going overboard, go ahead and make a cup of cinnamon tea. The cozy tea may even help decrease blood sugar due to cinnamon’s effect on blood glucose.

Swap The Salty Nuts With Raw Nuts

Keeping a watchful eye on the salt cravings is just as important as watching out for the sweet tooth. Reduce salt intake; swap salted nuts for raw nuts since they are packed with heart-healthy fats, fibre, and protein.

Go for simple buts instead of salted ones

    Swap With Fruits

Rather than snacking on Indian sweetmeats, choose fruits. Fruits are loaded with essential nutrients and contain numerous health benefits. Moreover, they will satisfy your sweet tooth as well. It may also provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Unlike sweetmeats, fruits are usually low in calories and high in fibre. Keep the sweetmeats for rare occasions.

    Prepare Sweets At Home

Instead of buying sweets for the festivals, try preparing them at home with healthy substitutes of the ingredients. Some of the options you can try are- coconut barfi/ladoo, ghia katli, energy balls with dry fruits, carrot cake and whole-grain cookies. Make nut-based desserts or chikkis (the original Indian energy bar). Nuts are a powerhouse of carbohydrates, protein, fibre and good fats, giving you immediate satiety.
