Ohio high school football playoff regional final pairings

Neutral sites are hosting fourth-round games at 7 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 22.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the high school football regional final playoff pairings Sunday afternoon, with neutral sites hosting fourth-round games at 7 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 22.

Later this week, the OHSAA will announce the bracket pairings for the state semifinals, which will take place on Friday, Nov. 29. The state championship games will be hosted at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton Dec. 5-7.

Tickets for all playoff games will be available on Mondays at www.ohsaa.org/tickets.

The final DII football Power 10 rankings before the postseason begins
The DII football regular season is officially in the books. Conference champions were crowned and Ferris State kept winning, leading to just some slight changes in the DII football Power 10 rankings as the selection show nears (you can watch Sunday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. ET on NCAA.com).

If you have been paying attention to my bracket projections, you’ll notice with CSU Pueblo leaping up yet another spot this week, all four projected No. 1 seeds are in the top 5 of the Power 10. Keep in mind, while that sounds like a no-brainer, it is not always the case with how deep Super Region Two and Three tend to run. In a season like few others, where upsets ran rampant and we had four different No. 1 teams in a span of four weeks, we are truly seeing some dominating football teams this year.

Before we get to the new-look Power 10, remember, these are my rankings. There is no committee or voting body coming up with these teams, just my spreadsheets, notes from coaches and a lot of deep diving into rosters and stats. I try to blend selection committee metrics — like strength of schedule, in-region record and PI — along with what I am seeing for an overall look at the landscape of DII football’s top teams. I try to explain why I make my choices in the article below. This will also be the final Power 10 rankings until after the championship game.

The DII football Power 10: Week 12

No. 1 Ferris State | Previous: 1. The Bulldogs took down Davenport and improved to 4-1 against teams with a plus-.500 record. They also had a win against Ashland earlier in the season, which may have played its way into the tournament this past Saturday. The Bulldogs have a top-10 scoring defense in DII and despite a lopsided loss on opening day to Pittsburg State, have yet to lose since and are rolling into what should be the first-round bye in Super Region Three.

No. 2 Grand Valley State | Previous: 2. I know I’m higher on the Lakers than the other polls, but the only blemish on their record is a loss to the No. 1 team in DII football. The Lakers went 5-1 against teams with a winning record and similarly to their GLIAC foe, have a top-10 scoring defense. If my bracket projections are correct, the Lakers will have a host seed and home-field advantage for the first couple of rounds. Lubbers Stadium in November is not a fun place for opponents to play.

No. 3 Valdosta State | Previous: 3. The Blazers have played one close football game this entire season, and that was an eight-point victory back on Oct. 12. The Blazers have outscored its opponents 431 to 91 behind a top-5 scoring offense (fifth at 44.8 points per game) and top-5 scoring defense (No. 5 at 9.1 points per game allowed). Defeating Delta State and West Florida by a combined 50 points to close the season was the exclamation point to yet another undefeated regular-season run.

No. 4 Kutztown | Previous: 4. The Golden Bears ran the table in 2024 and their only loss since Sept. 16, 2023, is in the national semifinals. My projections have Kutztown in the No. 1 spot for Super Region One and we should all hope we get a Charleston (WV) vs. Kutztown matchup down the road. That would pit the Golden Bears’ No. 2 defense in DII against one of the most explosive offenses in the division. Kutztown goes as far as its defense takes it.

No. 5 CSU Pueblo | Previous: 6. The ThunderWolves won their first RMAC title since 2014. Do you know what happened then? If you guessed the ThunderWolves won the national championship, give yourself a pat on the back. This team is cruising, and even when it faced adversity this past weekend — trailing 21-7 at the half — they showed they had no fear and came storming back with a 24-0 third quarter. This team has plenty of signature wins, the No. 1 scoring offense in the RMAC at 41.7 points, Howard Russell V and Reggie Retzlaff give them two superstars on offense and run an aggressive defense that can turn the tide of a game on a single drive.

No. 6 Harding | Previous: 5. The Bisons ran for 433 yards and seven touchdowns in yet another lopsided victory. They have the top scoring offense and defense in DII football and have run for an absurd 4,174 yards and 53 touchdowns. Their lone loss in the last two seasons was a tightly contested battle a few weeks back against Ouachita Baptist. Super Region Three is a gauntlet, and if my projections are right, Harding will be on the road, so being able to control the tempo and clock with that flexbone offense and stingy defense could get the Bisons back to the semifinals.

No. 7 Charleston (WV) | Previous: 7. While this offense is technically the fifth-best in DII statistically, I think it may very well be the most explosive in DII. Chavon Wright tied the single-season rushing touchdown record with 37 behind a 2,000-yard campaign, but in the last two weeks, quarterback Ean Hamric has been dynamite, throwing for 434 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions, while rushing for two additional scores. If this defense can slow down Kutztown — which the two should very likely meet — they are heading to the semifinals.

No. 8 Central Oklahoma | Previous: 9. So, here’s where it gets dicey. The Bronchos lost to Pittsburg State, so in the regional rankings, that gives the Gorillas the edge. However, in the Power 10 rankings, the MIAA champs — the first time the Bronchos have won the MIAA, mind you — have the edge. They defeated an Emporia State team that was in the playoff hunt to close the season and, if Charleston (WV) isn’t the best offense in the land, then the Bronchos are. In a tricky Super Region Three, where six of the top seven are right here inside the Power 10, it will be interesting to see how that offense handles some of the best defenses in all DII football.

No. 9 Pittsburg State | Previous: 8. How about the day for Luke Niggemann who had a pair of rushing touchdowns and scored on a blocked punt in the Gorillas 23-7 win over Northwest Missouri State? This team has a lot of balance on both sides of the ball, so don’t be fooled if no one stands out statistically because everyone carries the load. If my projections are correct and Pittsburg State has earned another host seed at No. 3, that is a huge advantage for the Gorillas who has won each of its postseason home games in the past two seasons.

No. 10 Ouachita Baptist| Previous: First five out. The Tigers closed the season in the Battle of the Ravine with a much-needed win over Henderson State, eliminating the Reddies’ slim hopes of a postseason berth. This spot was close between the Tigers and Western Colorado, but the Tigers are undefeated against teams with a winning record, have a higher strength of schedule, and a higher KPI, so this is a spot where I leaned on the metrics. My projections have the Tigers with a host seed, but we shall see how that plays out.

First five (ish) out (in alphabetical order):
- Augustana (SD): The Vikings lost to Bemidji State, but the Beavers are now a tournament team. It hurts, but not enough to take the Vikings out of the equation.
- UIndy: The Greyhounds are 10-1 and make it seven out of seven for my projected Super Region Three teams in the Power 10 conversation. Finishing the season by scoring at least 52 points in each of their last three games helps.
- Slippery Rock: The Rock rolled Bloomsburg in their finale and are heading to the playoffs yet again. Excluding the PSAC championship game, the Rock has not had more than one loss in the regular season since 2017.
- Western Colorado: The Mountaineers closed the season against Colorado School of Mines, CSU Pueblo, Chadron State and Colorado Mesa — three of which are in the Super Region Four rankings — and went 3-1, proving this team is the real deal.
- Wingate: The Bulldogs avenged their lone loss of the season, defeating Carson-Newman in the SAC championship game and staying in contention for the No. 1 seed in Super Region Two. This defense is insane and allowed just 84 total yards on Saturday.
Just missed: Angelo State, Cal (PA), Central Missouri, Minnesota State, West Alabama.

Lions stun Texans on 52-yard field goal in final seconds

Jake Bates hit a 52-yard field goal as time expired Sunday to help the Detroit Lions beat the Houston Texans 26-23 for their seventh straight win.

The Lions scored the final 19 points of the game after having trailed 23-7 at halftime. Detroit overcame a chaotic performance by quarterback Jared Goff, who threw five interceptions in the win. Goff is just the third quarterback since 1990 to win a game while throwing five interceptions.

C.J. Stroud threw two interceptions of his own for the Texans, and he was also sacked four times.

Goff was picked off on the Lions’ first drive, and Houston responded by scoring a touchdown eight plays later. After a Detroit three-and-out, the Texans added to their lead with a field goal.

The Lions briefly appeared to settle down offensively with an 11-play, 70-yard drive to cut the score to 10-7. But their final four drives of the first half were an interception, a three-and-out, a three-and-out and then one more interception on a Hail Mary attempt.

In that time, Houston added two more field goals and a touchdown. The Texans’ final touchdown was a 15-yard reception by John Metchie, his first career score.

The second half started with the quarterbacks trading interceptions. After a Houston punt, Detroit finally worked down the field for a touchdown to cut the score to 23-13. But then the game ground to a halt. The quarterbacks traded interceptions for a second time before the offenses combined for three straight punts.

The Lions finally restored order with a seven-play, 64-yard drive for a touchdown to make the score 23-20. After another seven-play drive by Detroit to tie the game, Houston had a chance to win late. Stroud led the Texans to the 40-yard line, but Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 58-yard field goal that would have given Houston the lead.

The Lions took advantage of the short field, setting up Bates’ game-winner in a few plays.

Detroit improved to 8-1, remaining in first place in the NFC. The Lions will return home to play the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 11.

Houston fell to 6-4 with its third defeat in four games. The Texans play the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 18.

Metchie entered Sunday with four catches for 36 yards in six games. In the first half alone against the Lions, Metchie had four catches for 65 yards — and his first career touchdown.

Lions stun Texans on 52-yard field goal in final seconds

Jake Bates hit a 52-yard field goal as time expired Sunday to help the Detroit Lions beat the Houston Texans 26-23 for their seventh straight win.

The Lions scored the final 19 points of the game after having trailed 23-7 at halftime. Detroit overcame a chaotic performance by quarterback Jared Goff, who threw five interceptions in the win. Goff is just the third quarterback since 1990 to win a game while throwing five interceptions.

C.J. Stroud threw two interceptions of his own for the Texans, and he was also sacked four times.

Goff was picked off on the Lions’ first drive, and Houston responded by scoring a touchdown eight plays later. After a Detroit three-and-out, the Texans added to their lead with a field goal.

The Lions briefly appeared to settle down offensively with an 11-play, 70-yard drive to cut the score to 10-7. But their final four drives of the first half were an interception, a three-and-out, a three-and-out and then one more interception on a Hail Mary attempt.

In that time, Houston added two more field goals and a touchdown. The Texans’ final touchdown was a 15-yard reception by John Metchie, his first career score.

The second half started with the quarterbacks trading interceptions. After a Houston punt, Detroit finally worked down the field for a touchdown to cut the score to 23-13. But then the game ground to a halt. The quarterbacks traded interceptions for a second time before the offenses combined for three straight punts.

The Lions finally restored order with a seven-play, 64-yard drive for a touchdown to make the score 23-20. After another seven-play drive by Detroit to tie the game, Houston had a chance to win late. Stroud led the Texans to the 40-yard line, but Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 58-yard field goal that would have given Houston the lead.

The Lions took advantage of the short field, setting up Bates’ game-winner in a few plays.

Detroit improved to 8-1, remaining in first place in the NFC. The Lions will return home to play the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 11.

Houston fell to 6-4 with its third defeat in four games. The Texans play the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 18.

Prince William is gifted a jar of jam on final day of South African tour while flanked by Winnie Harlow and Heidi Klum

The Prince of Wales received a jar of jam as a gift during his tour of South Africa this morning – months after his sister-in-law Meghan began gifting her friends with exactly the same item.

William, 42, gratefully accepted the jar of sour fig jam while meeting fishermen in Kalk Bay Harbour, Cape Town, the morning after his Earthshot Awards ceremony.

Beaming while he took the jam in his hand, William inadvertently made a nod to the Duchess of Sussex’s American Riviera Orchard lifestyle brand, which was first unveiled via jars of strawberry jam Meghan gifted to her glamorous Montecito friends.

However, amid trademark battles as the Duchess, 42, struggles to get the brand off the ground, American Riviera Orchard and its sweet products have gone quiet since the launch in March.

Meanwhile William, who has been flanked by A-listers Winnie Harlow and Heidi Klum during his tour of Cape Town as part of his Earthshot project, gladly accepted his jar of conserve as he appeared to share a joke with the fishermen. However, he was greeted by protests later in the visit from others in the fishing community who felt they had been excluded from the visit.

Earlier in the morning, the Prince of Wales admitted he ‘missed this life’ as he took to the seas with a lifeboat crew.

He met volunteers working for the National Seas Rescue Institute (NSRI) to hear about their lifesaving work and asking what inspired them to get involved.

Before donning a life jacket and heading out with the crew, he asked how choppy the water was and joked that he should possibly be wearing more kit so he did not get wet.

He also revealed that he was trying to teach his three children about rip tides and admitted he wished his family was with him on the trip.

Later in the day he joined his A-list Earthshot ally, German model Heidi Klum, for lunch on the harbour

Also present with William during his final day of the South African tour was model Winnie Harlow

Asked by one member of the crew if he had ever done search and rescue work, he replied: ‘I miss this life. Any chance to get back, I’ll take.’

The Prince trained as a search and rescue helicopter pilot at RAF Valley in Anglesey, North Wales before working as a pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance from March 2015 until July 2017.

He was greeted on arrival by Mike Vonk, CEO of NSRI, and was given a short tour of the base before chatting with members of the team about mental health support for first responders, an issue about which he feels particularly strongly.

‘Nice windy day today,’ he joked. ‘How are the seas today? It’s quite choppy!’

In the operations room, the Prince was shown the various pieces of equipment and technology that they use to monitor the waters.

He appeared impressed, saying he had never seen such kit before, and joked that he would have to download the app at home so he could track them.

‘We are trying to teach the children to understand currents,’ he said.

The Prince asked if riptides occurred on every beach in Cape Town. ‘Driving down the road here, if you look out you can see so much silt being taken out,’ he said. ‘It’s good to use those apps to inform your work.’

Captain Andrew Dekock told him: ‘It’s changed our lives;’ to which William replied: ‘I bet it has.’

He asked about the gaps between each lifeboat station and how many miles each crew covered. He also asked if it was predominantly tourists who got into trouble as locals were more informed of the dangers.

Capt Dekock asked him about his efforts to promote access to swimming lessons through his Royal Foundation.

‘Bearing in mind the UK is an island, we should all know how to swim,’ the Prince said. ‘It’s a life skill that might save your life one day.’

The Prince then donned a red waterproof coat and life jacket before the boat slowly made its way out of the base headed for Kalk Bay, where he met the fishermen.

He was given some beaded key rings to take home for his family.

Kate Wardle, 46, from Kalk Bay revealed she had had them especially made- handing him two in the shape of a W and a C and three in animal shapes for the children.

‘Thank you very much, they’ll love those. Never go home empty handed, that’s important,’ he said.

The famous gang fell about laughing as they dined together

William beamed during lunch with his A-list friends and Earthshot allies, the day after his awards ceremony

William appeared deep in conversation with American rapper Tobe Nwigwe

He added: ‘My children would love to be here, so would Catherine.’

However, despite receiving a warm reception from the adoring crowds, William’s walkabout inadvertently caused some upset among some in the fishing community who were protesting over the loss of rights for fishermen in the area.

Rifiek Isaac, deputy chair of a small scale fishing organisation, said he was angry that Abalobi had been chosen as they don’t represent the local fishermen.

‘We would have loved to meet the Prince, it’s not about him. We don’t like that company using our Harbour. We fish here.,’ he said.

Duwayne Baulse, 29, who has been a fisherman for 15 years since he left school, shouted angrily from his fish stall kept apart from William by the medal cordon.

The independent fishermen and women said they all were angry because they were not included in the engagement.

William was meeting 2023 Earthshot Finalist, Abalobi, Kalk Bay Harbour.

Duwayne said afterwards: ‘They aren’t based here and they don’t buy our fish.

‘People only come here when it is sunny. We are here in the rain and storms.

‘They have excluded us. William has not come to look at our fish.

‘No one told us the Prince was coming.

‘Afalobi don’t support us. This is our harbour.

‘We are not angry with him (William). We want people to come here more often. Not this set up.

‘It’s like a stage they put on in North Korea.’

There was also a lone protestor holding a sign saying: ‘William you have no sovereignty in our country.’

Nicholette De Mink said: ‘He needs to leave. He has no jurisdiction here. We have ordered him to leave. He is not acknowledging us but we will shout it anyway.’

Slaughter’s House: Final OSU-Baylor thoughts, Week 9 Big 12 football predictions | Sports

Will Oklahoma State pick up its first Big 12 Conference win? Eh…

But before we get to some final thoughts of OSU’s matchup against Baylor, today’s Slaughter’s House begins with some links to stories from The O’Colly’s Friday printed paper.

A story on quarterback Zane Flores and how he’s fully committed to OSU and looking toward the future after season-ending surgery.

A column on how Garret Rangel’s quarterback play against BYU was a cruel tease for Cowboy fans.

And a story on the Cowgirls’ big-time match against TCU on Senior Day.

I have less faith in OSU traveling to Waco against an unranked Baylor team for an afternoon game than I had for the Cowboys in Provo against BYU on a Friday night.

At this point, I just don’t see a win coming. Baylor head coach Dave Aranda isn’t working with an abundance of talent, and his job has been put into question plenty of times, but it’s less about the Bears and more about the Cowboys.

The hello-Alan-Bowman-we-still-beleive-in-you-at-quarterback-even-though-we-benched-you Cowboys.

Despite going into a not-so-hostile environment, I think OSU’s defensive woes and overall health leads to Baylor winning 33-20. And if I’m wrong, I’ll be there to witness it.

Big 12 football predictions

Here are my picks for the rest of the Big 12 slate:

BYU @ UCF (-2.5): I’m sorry, but I’m not sold on UCF after one impressive offensive outing over a BYU team that has some magic to it; Cougars win 28-20.

Texas Tech @ TCU (-6.5): Is either team going to get a stop? Well, in theory, yes. And I think Tech gets more stops; Red Raiders win 42-38.

West Virginia @ Arizona (-4.5): All I’ve done is pick WVU this year and get disappointed, so I’m finally jumping ship (this is going to backfire); Wildcats win 27-24.

Utah (-4.5) @ Houston: Despite Utah’s poor showing last week, I still like the Utes over UH in a low-scoring affair; Utes win 23-13.

Kansas @ Kansas State (-9.5): Kansas is going to keep this one close — as it has most games this season — but K-State will pull away at home; Wildcats win 33-27.

Cincinnati @ Colorado (-6.5): I need another week to buy in on Colorado, but I don’t need another week to buy in on Cinci; Bearcats win 30-24.

Bet of the day

Let’s forget I picked Syracuse +5.5 yesterday just like I forgot about Kyle McCord throwing three pick sixes (that’s a joke; I’ll never forgive him).

Today, though, I’ll roll with over 54.5 (-110) in Lousville-Boston College. The Cardinals couldn’t buy a stop last week against Miami, but they kept on scoring. With a little help from BC, I think this over hits by a few points.

Bet of the day record: 17-26.
