  • Bluesky finds with growth comes growing pains — and bots

Bluesky finds with growth comes growing pains — and bots

Bluesky has seen its user base soar since the U.S. presidential election, boosted by people seeking refuge from Elon Musk’s X, which they view as increasingly leaning too far to the right given its owner’s support of President-elect Donald Trump, or wanting an alternative to Meta’s Threads and its algorithms.

The platform grew out of the company then known as Twitter, championed by its former CEO Jack Dorsey. Its decentralized approach to social networking was eventually intended to replace Twitter’s core mechanic. That’s unlikely now that the two companies have parted ways. But Bluesky’s growth trajectory — with a user base that has more than doubled since October — could make it a serious competitor to other social platforms.

But with growth comes growing pains. It’s not just human users who’ve been flocking to Bluesky but also bots, including those designed to create partisan division or direct users to junk websites.

The skyrocketing user base — now surpassing 25 million — is the biggest test yet for a relatively young platform that has branded itself as a social media alternative free of the problems plaguing its competitors. According to research firm Similarweb, Bluesky added 7.6 million monthly active app users on iOS and Android in November, an increase of 295.4% since October. It also saw 56.2 million desktop and mobile web visits, in the same period, up 189% from October.

Besides the U.S. elections, Bluesky also got a boost when X was briefly banned in Brazil.

“They got this spike in attention, they’ve crossed the threshold where it is now worth it for people to flood the platform with spam,” said Laura Edelson, an assistant professor of computer science at Northeastern University and a member of Issue One’s Council for Responsible Social Media. “But they don’t have the cash flow, they don’t have the established team that a larger platform would, so they have to do it all very, very quickly.”

To manage growth for its tiny staff, Bluesky started as an invitation-only space until it opened to the public in February. That period gave the site time to build out moderation tools and other distinctive features to attract new users, such as “starter packs” that provide lists of topically curated feeds. Meta recently announced that it is testing a similar feature.

Compared to the bigger players like Meta’s platforms or X, Bluesky has a “quite different” value system, said Claire Wardle, a professor at Cornell University and an expert in misinformation. This includes giving users more control over their experience.

“The first generation of social media platforms connected the world, but ended up consolidating power in the hands of a few corporations and their leaders,” Bluesky said on its blog in March. “Our online experience doesn’t have to depend on billionaires unilaterally making decisions over what we see. On an open social network like Bluesky, you can shape your experience for yourself.”

Because of this mindset, Bluesky has achieved a scrappy underdog status that has attracted users who’ve grown tired of the big players.

“People had this idea that it was going to be a different type of social network,” Wardle said. “But the truth is, when you get lots of people in a place and there are eyeballs, it means that it’s in other people’s interests to use bots to create, you know, information that aligns with their perspective.”

Little data has emerged to help quantify the rise in impersonator accounts, artificial intelligence-fueled networks and other potentially harmful content on Bluesky. But in recent weeks, users have begun reporting large numbers of apparent AI bots following them, posting plagiarized articles or making seemingly automated divisive comments in replies.

Lion Cassens, a Bluesky user and doctoral candidate in the Netherlands, found one such network by accident — a group of German-language accounts with similar bios and AI-generated profile pictures posting in replies to three German newspapers.

“I noticed some weird replies under a news post by the German newspaper ‘Die Ziet,’” he said in an email to The Associated Press. “I have a lot of trust in the moderation mechanism on Bluesky, especially compared to Twitter since the layoffs and due to Musk’s more radical stance on freedom of speech. But AI bots are a big challenge, as they will only improve. I hope social media can keep up with that.”

Cassens said the bots’ messages have been relatively innocuous so far, but he was concerned about how they could be repurposed in the future to mislead.

There are also signs that foreign disinformation narratives have made their way to Bluesky. The disinformation research group Alethea pointed to one low-traction post sharing a false claim about ABC News that had circulated on Russian Telegram channels.

Copycat accounts are another challenge. In late November, Alexios Mantzarlis, director of the Security, Trust and Safety Initiative at Cornell Tech, found that of the top 100 most followed named individuals on Bluesky, 44% had at least one duplicate account posing as them. Two weeks later, Mantzarlis said Bluesky had removed around two-thirds of the duplicate accounts he’d initially detected — a sign the site was aware of the issue and attempting to address it.

Bluesky posted earlier this month that it had quadrupled its moderation team to keep up with its growing user base. The company also announced it had introduced a new system to detect impersonation and was working to improve its Community Guidelines to provide more detail on what’s allowed. Because of the way the site is built, users also have the option to subscribe to third-party “Labelers” that outsource content moderation by tagging accounts with warnings and context.

The company didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment for this story.

Even as its challenges aren’t yet at the scale other platforms face, Bluesky is at a “crossroads,” said Edward Perez, a board member at the nonpartisan nonprofit OSET Institute, who previously led Twitter’s civic integrity team.

“Whether BlueSky likes it or not, it is being pulled into the real world,” Perez said, noting that it needs to quickly prioritize threats and work to mitigate them if it hopes to continue to grow.

That said, disinformation and bots won’t be Bluesky’s only challenges in the months and years to come. As a text-based social network, its entire premise is falling out of favor with younger generations. A recent Pew Research Center poll found that only 17% of American teenagers used X, for instance, down from 23% in 2022. For teens and young adults, TikTok, Instagram and other visual-focused platforms are the places to be.

Political polarization is also going against Bluesky ever reaching the size of TikTok, Instagram or even X.

“Bluesky is not trying to be all things to all people,” Wardle said, adding that, likely, the days of a Facebook or Instagram emerging where they’re “trying to keep everybody happy” are over. Social platforms are increasingly splintered along political lines and when they aren’t — see Meta’s platforms — the companies behind them are actively working to de-emphasize political content and news.

  • US effort to curb China’s and Russia’s access to advanced computer chips ‘inadequate,’ report finds

US effort to curb China’s and Russia’s access to advanced computer chips ‘inadequate,’ report finds

WASHINGTON — The Commerce Department’s efforts to curb China’s and Russia’s access to American-made advanced computer chips have been “inadequate” and will need more funding to stymie their ability to manufacture advanced weapons, according to a report published Wednesday by the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

The Biden administration imposed export controls to limit the ability of China and Russia ability to access U.S.-made chips after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago.

The agency’s Bureau of Industry and Security, according to the report, does not have the resources to enforce export controls and has been too reliant on U.S. chip makers voluntarily complying with the rules.

But the push for bolstering Commerce’s export control enforcement comes as the incoming Trump administration says it is looking to dramatically reduce the size and scope of federal government. President-elect Donald Trump has tapped entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency” to dismantle parts of the federal government.

The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

BIS’s budget, about $191 million, has remained essentially flat since 2010 when adjusted for inflation.

“While BIS’ budget has been stagnant for a decade, the bureau works diligently around the clock to meet its mission and safeguard U.S. national security,” Commerce Department spokesperson Charlie Andrews said in a statement in response to the report.

Andrews added that with “necessary resources from Congress” the agency would be “better equipped to address the challenges that come with our evolving national security environment.”

In a letter to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on Wednesday, Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, chair of the subcommittee, pointed to an audit of Texas Instruments that showed the Russian military continued to acquire components from Texas Instruments through front companies in Hong Kong to illustrate how the export controls are failing as an effective tool.

The committee’s findings, Blumenthal said, suggest that Texas Instruments “missed clear warning signs” that three companies in its distribution chain had been diverting products to Russia. Texas Instruments did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“While Congress must provide BIS more resources to undertake its critical mission, it is long past time for BIS to make full use of the enforcement powers Congress has conferred upon it and take aggressive steps to cut the flow of U.S. semiconductors into the Russian war machine,” Blumenthal wrote.

It’s not just Texas Instruments that’s the issue. The subcommittee in September published a report that found aggregated exports from four major U.S. advanced chip manufacturers nearly doubled from 2021 to 2022 to Armenia and Georgia.

Both of those countries are home to front companies known to assist Russia in acquiring advanced chips made in the U.S. despite export controls.

China, meanwhile, has created “vast, barely disguised smuggling networks which enable it to continue to harness U.S. technology,” the subcommittee report asserts.

Washington has been gradually expanding the number of companies affected by such export controls in China, as President Joe Biden’s administration has encouraged an expansion of investments in and manufacturing of chips in the U.S.

But Chinese companies have found ways to evade export controls in part because of a lack of China subject matter experts and Chinese speakers assigned to Commerce’s export control enforcement.

The agency’s current budget limits the number of international end-use checks, or physical verification overseas of distributors or companies receiving American-made chips that are the supposed end users of products. Currently, Commerce has only 11 export control officers spread around the globe to conduct such checks.

The committee made several recommendations in its report, including Congress allocating more money for hiring additional personnel to enforce export controls, imposing larger fines on companies that violate controls and requiring periodic reviews of advanced chip companies’ export control plans by outside entities.

  • Study Finds A Potential Link Between Plant-Based Meat And Depression In Vegetarians

Study Finds A Potential Link Between Plant-Based Meat And Depression In Vegetarians

Vegetarians consuming plant-based alternatives to meat — suggested as one of the means to lower the environmental impact of meat consumption — could have a 42 per cent increased risk of depression compared to vegetarians who refrain from them, according to a study. Published in the journal Food Frontiers, the study also found higher blood pressure and inflammation levels, along with lower levels of ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL), in vegetarians who ate plant-based meat alternatives.
Researchers at the University of Surrey, UK, analysed data from over 3,300 vegetarians in the UK Biobank-about half were consumers of plant-based meat alternatives, and half were non-consumers. Made using plant-based proteins such as soy, plant-based meat alternatives (PBMA) are considered a potential solution for sustainability, as fewer natural resources such as water, land and energy are required to produce them compared to animal meat.
However, these meat alternatives are also considered ‘ultra-processed foods,’ as chemicals are often added to make them taste like meat. The researchers noted that while consuming plant-based meat alternatives was not linked with clear health benefits, more studies are needed to investigate concerns related to inflammation, which may arise from eating these products.
“In conclusion, while no clear health risks or benefits were associated with PBMA consumption in vegetarians, the higher risk of depression, elevated CRP (C-reactive proteins), and lower apolipoprotein A levels (HDL cholesterol) in consumers of PBMA suggest potential inflammatory concerns that warrant further investigation,” the authors wrote.
Co-author Anthony Whetton, a professor of translational biosystems at the University of Surrey, said, “Ultra-processed plant-based meat alternatives can be a useful way for people to transition to a vegetarian diet effectively, which helps with sustainable agricultural practices.” “Further research, including longitudinal studies and trials with more diverse populations, is necessary to confirm these findings and the relationship between vegetarian foods and mood,” Whetton added.
In the study group, the researchers found no notable differences in the intake of sodium, free sugars, total sugars, or saturated fatty acids between vegetarians who ate plant-based meat alternatives and those who did not. The team also found that consuming plant-based meat alternatives was linked to a 40% lower risk of irritable bowel syndrome.
“The overall findings are reassuring, suggesting that plant-based meat alternatives may be a safe option when they are part of an overall balanced diet. However, the potential link between these foods, inflammation, and depression warrants further investigation,” said senior author Nophar Geifman, a professor of health and biomedical informatics at the University of Surrey.

  • Musk and Trump are viewed roughly the same by Americans, an AP-NORC poll finds

Musk and Trump are viewed roughly the same by Americans, an AP-NORC poll finds

WASHINGTON — WASHINGTON (AP) — Elon Musk, clad in tuxedo and black tie, took the stage at President-elect Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort shortly after the election with all the swagger of the winning candidate himself.

“The public has given us a mandate that could not be more clear, the clearest mandate. The people have spoken. The people want change,” Musk told the audience of Trump’s biggest donors, campaign leaders and appointment seekers. “We are going to shake things up. It’s going to be a revolution.”

Musk’s attachment to Trump has created an alliance between America’s most powerful politician and its richest businessman — and roughly the same percentages of Americans have favorable views of each, according to a new poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Experts are split on whether that overlap in public opinion is a good or bad thing for Musk’s businesses or for Trump’s politics. But it could have far-reaching effects in both realms.

Musk, whose net worth tops $400 billion, oversees six businesses while continuing to work closely with Trump: electric car manufacturer Tesla, the X social media platform, space technology company SpaceX, brain link company Neuralink, the startup xAI and tunneling operator The Boring Co.

“Even though there’s a negative impact, in terms of potentially alienating some of their customers that might not be fans of Trump, the benefits far outweigh any negatives when it comes to having a right-hand seat next to Trump in the White House,” said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

Ross Gerber, CEO of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management, identified himself as an investor in Musk’s Tesla and a driver of Tesla’s new Cybertruck, the futuristic pickup that has gotten huge amounts of attention but also been the subject of safety concerns and multiple recalls.

“Having your CEO not working at your company and working at the job of having to fire government employees … as a shareholder, I’m paying someone to not work for my company,” he said. “As a Cybertruck owner with self-driving that sucks and doesn’t work, I’m like, ‘Dude, this isn’t fair.’”

But despite his skepticism, Gerber said he won’t stop investing in Musk’s businesses.

“I’ve made a lot of money with Elon,” he said. “I’m not in the business of investing based on the popularity of CEOs.”

Musk doesn’t appear to give Trump much boost with people who don’t back the incoming president.

He is no more popular with the U.S. public than the president-elect himself, and viewed unfavorably by about half of Americans, according to the AP-NORC poll.

About 4 in 10 Americans have a somewhat or very favorable view of the world’s richest person, very similar to the percentage who view Trump positively. Likewise, about half of adults have a somewhat or very unfavorable view of Musk — again, similar to Trump.

Instead, said one political strategist, Musk is the ideal validator for someone who cultivates an image of success in business and who has stocked his Cabinet and key adviser roles with billionaires.

“Trump has always pushed this narrative that he’s a successful developer and a very successful businessman. I think having Musk with him is his double-down on this business success, good-for-the-economy, good-for-everybody-making money kind of persona,” said Christine Matthews, a national political pollster who has worked for Republicans. “In this case, Musk is seen as this successful, innovative, tech entrepreneur, frontier-buster.”

Musk also has at his disposal X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter that he purchased and turned into a megaphone for conservative ideas. And having spent an estimated $250 million to support Trump in the election, Musk has signaled he is willing to back Republican primary challenges to GOP members in the House and Senate seeking reelection in 2026 who waver on Trump’s appointments and agenda.

Trump has tasked him with leading a group to reduce the size of the federal government and reduce the rulemaking authority of the federal bureaucracy.

Tesla stands to make significant gains under a Trump administration with the threat of diminished subsidies for alternative energy and electric vehicles doing the most harm to smaller competitors. Trump’s plans for extensive tariffs on Chinese imports make it less likely that Chinese EVs will be sold in bulk in the U.S. anytime soon.

Some analysts believe the billionaire’s role will create a very friendly landscape for Tesla over the coming years. Ives, the analyst at Wedbush Securities, said Musk’s relationship with Trump could “revolutionize the Tesla story, especially around robotics, AI and autonomous.”

Investors, he said, are betting on Musk and see his political ascent as a “champagne moment.” Unlike Gerber, Ives believes that ending the EV credit and taking subsidies from Detroit carmakers, Hyundai and other companies will create only opportunity for Tesla.

“I think Wall Street is starting to fully digest the potential benefits from Musk,” Ives said.

Tesla shares closed at a record high on Tuesday, with much of the company’s recent gains coming after Trump’s victory. But Gerber feels that jump is because investors believe Tesla will have an advantage when it comes to autonomous driving because Trump could grant the company a national autonomy license.

Still, he thinks Tesla will be the “big loser” of Musk’s businesses because of Trump’s promise to end the EV tax credit for carmakers.

“For Tesla, I don’t see a ton of benefit from this,” he said. “Elon is misleading people to say it hurts the competition if the credit goes away.”

Musk’s other companies — including his artificial intelligence company, xAI — could reap the benefits of working within the Trump administration, he said.

“AI is a transformative investment that will create lots of regulatory and governmental issues, especially around safety and information,” Gerber said. “There’s a lot of benefit, from an AI perspective, to having Elon where he is.”

The relationship between the two men has no parallel in U.S. history, said David Nasaw, biographer of American business tycoons Andrew Carnegie and William Randolph Hearst. He noted that Musk, to a level unlike other tycoons, has relied on subsidies and favorable government decisions for his success from Tesla to SpaceX.

“He’s a unicorn,” Nasaw said of Musk.

  • Black Plastic Kitchenware May Look Nice But Could Be Harming Your Health: Latest Study Finds

Black Plastic Kitchenware May Look Nice But Could Be Harming Your Health: Latest Study Finds

Do you use black plastic items such as spatulas or sushi trays in your kitchen? While black plastic items may look more appealing than other colours, a new study has found several potential health risks associated with the use of most black plastics in the kitchen. Conducted in the US, scientists from Toxic-Free Future (a non-profit organization) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam found high levels of cancer-causing, hormone-disrupting, flame-retardant chemicals in a variety of household products made with black plastics. This includes everyday items such as food service ware (containers, bowls, plates, cups, and other items used for one-time use), kitchen utensils, and even black plastic toys.

The study found that plastics used in electronics, such as televisions, often contain toxic chemicals. These plastics, typically containing high concentrations of toxic flame retardants, may be recycled to make household items such as kitchen utensils. Recycled electronic components that use flame retardants tend to be black, which is why black plastic utensils are more likely to contain such toxic chemicals.

“Flame-retardant-containing electronics, such as the outer casings of large TVs, are being recycled into food storage containers and utensils,” said Heather Stapleton, the Ronie-Richele Garcia-Johnson Distinguished Professor at Duke University.

Also Read:Celebrity Nutritionist Asks Swiggy And Zomato To Stop Using Plastic Containers, Zomato Responds

Megan Liu, study co-author and science and policy manager at Toxic-Free Future explained, “These cancer-causing chemicals shouldn’t be used, to begin with, but with recycling, they are entering our environment and our homes in more ways than one. The high levels we found are concerning.”

The study, published in the journal Chemosphere, tested 203 household products made of black plastic, and 85% of them had toxic flame-retardant chemicals. Although they did not disclose the specific brands or manufacturers, the study found the highest levels of toxic flame retardants in a sushi tray, spatula, and a beaded necklace.

According to the study, health concerns related to flame retardants include:

    1. Carcinogenicity: The ability or tendency of a chemical to induce tumours (benign or malignant).
    2. Endocrine Disruption: Changes in the activity or production of hormones due to chemicals.
    3. Neurotoxicity: Damage to the brain or peripheral nervous system caused by exposure to natural or man-made toxic substances.
    4. Reproductive Toxicity: Adverse effects on sexual function and fertility in adult males and females, as well as developmental toxicity in offspring.
    5. Developmental Toxicity: Any structural or functional alteration caused by the environmental insult that interferes with normal growth, differentiation, development, and/or behaviour.

According to experts, it is advised to replace your concerning kitchenware or use black-coated ones less.

RICHARD EDEN: Meghan Markle finds the ideal boss for her American Riviera Orchard… herself! Duchess of Sussex takes up CEO role at her lifestyle brand after fruitless search to find someone able to meet her expectations

Having announced her new cooking and lifestyle business, American Riviera Orchard, with great fanfare back in March, the Duchess of Sussex began a search for a suitable Chief Executive Officer.

‘Meghan is interviewing candidates for the CEO role at the moment,’ a source told me at the time.

Despite having interviewed several candidates for the position, Prince Harry’s wife was unable to find anyone who matched her expectations.

Now, insiders say she has found the perfect candidate – herself.

‘She is the CEO of American Riviera Orchard,’ a ‘source in the know’ told the New York Post.

In April, a California-based source told me: ‘The initial CEO search has not panned out so far.’

I reported that the Duchess’s difficulties had led to an intriguing new development: she had begun negotiations with Netflix about the U.S. streaming giant entering into a commercial partnership with American Riviera Orchard.

‘This is something new for Netflix,’ the source told me. ‘It would run the lifestyle business with Meghan, developing products as spin-offs from her show. ‘If a partnership is agreed, it’s likely that Netflix would install its own CEO to run operations.’

The news that Meghan has appointed herself chief executive of the business follows a string of departures from Harry and Meghan’s workforce.

The total number of staff the Sussexes have lost since they married in 2018 is said to be at least 18, with nine or more having left since they moved to California.

A spokesman for the Sussexes declined to comment last night.

Super Micro’s shares jump after server maker says review finds no evidence of misconduct

NEW YORK — Just over a month after Ernst & Young resigned as its public accounting firm, Super Micro Computer says a review committee has found no evidence of fraud or misconduct among the server maker’s leadership.

Super Micro is also searching for a new chief financial officer and appointing other executives per recommendations from the committee, which began its review several months ago — after EY communicated concerns over issues like transparency, internal control related to financial reporting and integrity of management while conducting its first audit for the company.

Additional information that emerged during this review eventually led EY to resign as Super Micro’s public accountant in October. Super Micro, which disagreed with EY’s decision, later appointed BDO as its new independent auditor last month.

Super Micro announced that the committee, formed by the board as well as external counsel, completed its review on Monday. The company said that the conclusions EY laid out in its resignation “were not supported by the facts” found in this probe — maintaining that there was no evidence of misconduct.

As a result, Super Micro does not expect past financial reports to be restated. Shares for Super Micro climbed over 20% Monday morning.

Beyond the findings of this review, Super Micro also laid out plans to appoint new leadership, which it says follow recommendations from the committee. Super Micro disclosed that it has begun looking for a new CFO, with David Weigand continuing in the role until the board names a successor. The company also said it would be “accelerating its search” for a chief compliance officer and for a general counsel.

In addition, Super Micro announced it has appointed Kenneth Cheung, current vice president of finance and corporate controller, as chief accounting officer.

It’s been a tumultuous year for Super Micro — and EY’s resignation wasn’t the first time its accounting practices have come into question. Back in August, short-selling firm Hindenburg Research released a report alleging ample accounting manipulation at the company, pointing to “glaring accounting red flags” and evidence of undisclosed transactions. It also accused Super Micro of rehiring top executives that were directly involved in a 2018 scandal. At the time, Super Micro said it would not comment “on rumors and speculation.”

Following these accusations, The Wall Street Journal and others reported that the Justice Department was beginning a probe into Super Micro, citing people familiar with the matter.

Super Micro has been among tech companies recently riding a the artificial intelligence wave. In August, Super Micro reported fourth-quarter revenue of $5.31 billion, a more than 143% increase over the $2.18 billion it reported in the same quarter of 2023.

  • Days After Emotional Davis Cup Retirement, Rafael Nadal Finds Quick Escape From Tennis by Venturing Into New Sport

Days After Emotional Davis Cup Retirement, Rafael Nadal Finds Quick Escape From Tennis by Venturing Into New Sport

Rafael Nadal means competing without a break. Just last week, the 22-time Grand Slam winner hanged up his tennis racket and said his final goodbye to an illustrious career. Facing Botic Van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands, in the QF round, Nadal seemed like a shadow of his past self as he couldn’t dominate the Dutchman. The latter managed to get the better of Rafa and took the match 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets. While many people were curious to know what would the King of Clay do after retirement, he’s made it pretty much clear now, thanks to an update coming from his hometown in Mallorca.

Rafael Nadal has taken to his passion for golf. The 38-year-old took to the golf course and participated in the FGB Hexagonal Q-Romia Circuit at Club de Golf Son Servera on Saturday. What’s more?

Well, he succeeded in finishing at the eighth position with a score of 76 strokes, four over par, as reported by Spanish website Ultima Hora. Nadal’s birdies on the par-5 ninth and sixteenth holes, and on the par-3 third hole, highlighted his round. At one stage, he was, in fact, on the first spot, but couldn’t maintain the lead. But earning eighth place, among close to 80 players, in the Handicap category, is still commendable to say the least, isn’t it?

While he and his team gave their best, the ultimate winner of the competition was the team of Terraza Balear Part of Gunni Trentino. On second position was Engel&Volkers Commercial, followed by God save The Par. Nadal’s The Rafael Nadal Academy took the fourth spot, while Ejusan Ecologic B rounded out the top five.

For those unaware, Nadal’s passion for golf is not new. The tennis icon, a keen golfer, has participated in the Balearic Mid-Amateur Golf Championship three times in the last four years. This year in February, Nadal outperformed the field, finishing three over par for a two-round total of 147 strokes. His seven-stroke victory over Jaime Nicolau Olmos secured him the men’s title.

In fact, he’s expressed his liking for the sport on numerous occasions in the past.

When Rafael Nadal revealed his brewing passion for golf

Back in 2012, speaking to Miami Herald, the 14-time Roland Garros champion had expressed his inner thoughts on golf. While unleashing his love for the sport, he said, “I love the game of golf in general,” he said. Continuing further, he added, “Golf is great, because you are always in beautiful places when you are playing, and the risk for injury, as you know, is very small.”

Moreover, his craze for the sport even attracted golf legend Tiger Woods, who became a fan of him! Back in 2019, during the R16 at the US Open, Woods was spotted watching Rafael Nadal. Later in that event, Nadal emerged victorious at the Flushing Meadows and lifted the trophy after defeating Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller. After winning the final, Rafa extended his gratitude towards Woods.

“It’s a huge honour to play in front of all of [New York fans] but to play in front of Tiger is a very special thing. I’ve always said that I don’t have idols, but if I did I would have to say that one idol is him. I always try to follow him, every single shot through the whole year,” he said. “He’s a big legend of sport, one of the greatest sportsmen of all time. I want to congratulate him for one of the most amazing comebacks of the sport ever when he won The Masters this year”, he concluded while praising Woods’ golf supremacy.

Now that the tennis chapter is over, it will be intriguing to see whether Nadal will take up golf as a permanent profession. Do you think he will ace in this role as well if he decides to go pro? Let us know in the comments below.

Study Finds Link Between Gut Health And Brains Response To Stress In A Time-Specific Way

A study has uncovered how microbes in one’s gut helps manage stress by interacting with the body’s circadian rhythms, or biological clock.

Researchers from the University College Cork, Ireland, found that the trillions of microorganisms in the gut — or the gut microbiome — control the hormones produced in response to stress in a time-dependent manner.

A healthy gut, thereby, helps in creating day-night rhythms in the production of stress hormones, whereas, a reduced gut microbiome leads to a disrupted body clock and is related to altered rhythms in how stress hormones are produced, the team said.

The findings, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy gut, they said.

The study’s results could also be looked into for developing treatments for mental conditions such as anxiety and depression, which are known to be linked to stress and often involve disrupted body clock and sleep cycles, the researchers said.

“Our research has revealed an important link between the gut (microbiome) and how the brain responds to stress in a time-specific way,” lead researcher John Cryan, University College Cork, said.

“The gut microbiome doesn’t just regulate digestion and metabolism; it plays a critical role in how we react to stress, and this regulation follows a precise circadian rhythm,” Cryan said.

For the study, the researchers looked at mice, which are known to have biological processes and genetic material similar to humans.

The team found an “intricate relationship” between the gut microbes and three regions in the brain forming the HPA axis — the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and the adrenal gland. The HPA axis is the body’s central stress response system.

The researchers showed that a depletion of the gut microbiome results in an over-activation of the HPA axis in a manner specific to the time of the day. This, combined with changes to the brain’s regions responding to stress and the biological clock, leads to an altered body’s response to stress over the entire day, they said.

Specific gut bacteria, including a Lactobacillus strain (Limosilactobacillus reuteri), were identified as “key influencers” of this body clock-related stress response.
