  • Apple’s latest iPhones get the gift of more AI as holiday shopping season heats up

Apple’s latest iPhones get the gift of more AI as holiday shopping season heats up

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is pumping more artificial intelligence into the latest iPhones during the holiday shopping season with a free software update that includes a feature that enables users to create customized emojis within a matter of seconds.

The Wednesday release of the iPhone’s upgraded operating system, iOS 18.2, extends Apple’s expansion into AI months after rivals such as Samsung and Google began implanting the revolutionary technology on their devices. The update builds upon another one that came out in late October to usher in the AI era for Apple and the iPhone, as well as for the iPad and Mac.

The latest round of AI tricks includes “Genmojis,” Apple’s description for emojis that iPhone users will be able to ask the technology to create and then share. Apple says it is placing some limits its AI’s emoji artistry to prevent the distribution of violent or hateful imagery. Other features include an “Image Playground” for a variety of AI-styled illustrations, writing tools and options for summarizing emails.

The technology won’t work on iPhones that Apple made before 2023 because it requires a special processor that isn’t in older models. The AI will work on the iPhone 16 line-up that came out in September and the premium iPhone 15 models released last year.

That exclusivity is expected to propel a cycle of iPhone upgrades during the current holiday shopping season into next year, driving up Apple’s profit even higher from the $94 billion that the Cupertino, California, company pocketed in its last fiscal year ending in September. That expectation is the main reason Apple’s stock price has climbed by about 30% so far this year to push the company’s market value closer to the $4 trillion threshold for the first time.

Apple is broadening the AI suite’s appeal by including English versions tailored for Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. that are included in the latest software update.

Although the iPhone’s AI is similar to many of the features that have already been available from other companies, Apple is taking a slightly different approach to the technology in an effort to stand out from the rest of pack. It is emphasizing its ongoing commitment to protecting iPhone users’ privacy by processing most of its AI on the device itself or corralling it in a secured data center. Users seeking more AI wizardry than the device or the special data center can handle will have the option to reach out to the popular ChatGPT technology made by OpenAI, which has forged a partnership with Apple.

  • The gift guide for those that ‘have everything’: I’m a Lifestyle Editor – these are the brilliant Christmas ideas I’m SURE you haven’t thought of yet

The gift guide for those that ‘have everything’: I’m a Lifestyle Editor – these are the brilliant Christmas ideas I’m SURE you haven’t thought of yet

    It’s 19 days until Christmas.

At this point in the festive prep process there are two types of people: those that had their shopping smugly wrapped up in November and those that are frantically looking up Australia Post shipping estimates and Googling Westfield opening hours.

If you are the latter, I have you covered. Not only can I enthusiastically vouch for the below suggestions, they are unique, cover most ages and interests and suit a fairly wide budget range.

Each of these must-haves also make for a great dinner party chat and are unlikely to have sold out. Plus, they should all be in your hands well before Christmas Eve.

    Beautiful yet budget-friendly

    $150 and under

    The Everlasting Candle, $80

It’s the candle that ‘never melts’. This genius little gift is not only a beautiful addition to the living home, it is also reusable, smoke-free and scent-free.

I use mine to create stunning ambience around the home without the worry of an overwhelming scent. I often pop on one of my favourite candles or oils for half an hour or so first to create a lovely base aroma.

Everlasting Candle Co. was born when husband and wife duo Jesse and Tamara Furgason were looking for a solution to the short lifespan and messiness of wax candles (including the smoke and soot they produced).

This inspired them to design a reusable oil-burning candle made of steel that never melts.

Available in a range of styles and colours, prices start at $80 and the set includes the Everlasting Candles, a vase and the Pristine Oil.

You can find Everlasting Candle Co. in more than 1,000 boutiques and retailers throughout Canada and the U.S, and now, most exciting of all, online in Australia.

A Filtered Beauty shower filter, $89

Hard water – as found in many pipes across Australia – can have a drying effect on skin and hair and lead to all sorts of issues like breakage, lifeless locks and skin irritation like eczema, acne and blocked pores.

These nasties in hard water reduce lather in soap and therefore leave behind soap scum, leave a film on the hair and skin and can also appear on shower screens as white stains.

Kim Haberley, a hairdresser and owner of Boho Blonde, and marketing manager Tayla Cron, 26, launched Filtered Beauty to sell easy-to-fit shower purifiers that prevent ‘hard water’ from causing damage to hair and skin over time.

The small gadgets, which screw into all shower heads and take two minutes to install, filter out chlorine, minerals and metals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and lead from shower water and add oxygen and Vitamin C.

As someone who is admittedly not too handy, I am delighted to say I set this filter up on my own in minutes by following the easy-to-follow instructions. The results were so fantastic I’ve been a loyal customer for over two years.

The best part is once you’ve made the initial investment, the refills are just $55 each and last for three to six months. That’s $0.15 a shower.

It’s safe to say your loved one will thank you for this, even if they didn’t knew they needed it.

A Dream Labs escape, $150 for 70 minutes

Most of us have heard of Tokyo Headpsa, but have you heard of Dream Labs?

While the former offers an immersive scalp treatment like no other, the Dream Labs treatment combines the art of traditional Japanese massage with a unique sensory experience designed to transport you to a realm of unparalleled serenity.

The Cosmic Space treatment is complemented by the expert touch of a specialised head, neck, shoulder, and chest massage in a seated (unbelievably cosy) reclining chair. It’s supported by beautiful immersive graphics projected on the walls around you

The experience begins as the curated sounds and visuals set the stage for your journey. The masseuse uses gentle to medium pressure that melts away tension, enhances circulation, and promotes deep relaxation.

Gradually, as the massage progresses, the sensory stimulation softens, encouraging guests to close their eyes, unwind, and often drift into a light sleep.

It’s so relaxing, the team claims it offers many of the benefits of six hours of sleep in just 15 minutes. These include reduced cortisol levels, enhanced blood circulation, melatonin release and muscle/pain relief.

While it is currently only available in Bondi Junction, they plan to expand to the other Tokyo Headspa centres in St Leonards and Surry Hills in Sydney as well as West End and Teneriffe in Brisbane.

The Glasshouse Festive Spinning Carousel, $29.95

How does one level up a candle? An accessory.

But this is not your every day accessory – and it’s one we recommend to friends and family over and over again.

This golden gadget twirls with delight as it heats up on top of your favourite 380g design by the brand.

As it spins, it projects stunning sparkling images onto the walls around the room creating a beautiful, cosy space.

Some of the candles come with the carousel included as a bundle, like the popular Kyoto in Bloom set. That would be my top pick by a mile – it’s impossible not to fall in love with it.

Crocs Classic Cozzzy Towel Sandals, $65.99

    Hear me out.

I know Crocs are a controversial buy but there’s a reason they have a mega fanbase forming around the world. They are impossibly comfy.

And these slide-esque sandals are just that – plus they’re not too ‘Croc-like’ for the newbies and are lined with the most cosy terry cloth footbed.

This device is compatible with wines sealed by both cork and screw caps, thanks to the inclusion of six screw caps that form part of the system. You can also attach the aerator, which creates the same effect in 15 seconds as 90 minutes of decanting.

I know it looks intimidating, but, as mentioned earlier, I am not the handiest woman and had this on and spritzing in a matter of minutes.

‘The inspiration behind Coravin was to allow wine enthusiasts to enjoy and savour their favourite wines without the fear of spoilage. Eleven years later, I’m thrilled to see that a glass of wine preserved with Coravin is now poured every second of every day,’ Greg Lambrecht, the founder and inventor, says.

Plus, in partnership with One Tree Planted, Coravin pledges to plant a tree for every Forest Green Timeless Six+ sold, meaning wine lovers can sip wines for a sustainable cause.

And it’s on sale for $419.97 from $700.

The KitchenAid Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine, $999

When most think of KitchenAid they do not typically think of coffee machines.

    But they should.

Every one I know who has tried this machine agrees this is the very best homemade coffee they’ve had – so much so it easily rivals café creations.

Is it expensive? Yes. Is it the perfect ‘us’ present for families and couples? Yes.

This design, which comes with the Burr Grinder, is actually the cheapest and certainly the most stylish of the new collection.

Compared to cheaper alternatives, the appliance is deathly quiet and won’t scream the house down with every brew which ideal if you have small children. The chic design is also sure to fit seamlessly into your life, impress guests and last years to come.

It’ll make you and your loved ones feel like a barista, with espresso, lattes, cappuccinos and more available to craft like a pro in seconds. Ideal for lazy ‘blah’ Sunday mornings.

If you girl math it, it’s actually saving – and perhaps making – you money long term. Iykyk.

23rd Street Distillery Year of the Snake Whisky, $225

If your loved one is a whisky fan, this exclusive drop is sure to be an instant crowd-pleaser.

The 23rd Street Distillery Year of the Snake Whisky has been, as the name suggests, crafted to celebrate… the 2025 Year of the Snake.

The distillery, in South Australia, has stood its ground through the trials and seasons of more than a century.

It sits on the corner of 23rd Street in Renmark, and began its life making wine using the bounty of the local fruit-growing region where Australia’s first co-operatively owned winery, Renmano, was formed.

Crafted from Kangaroo Island barley, the whisky has been aged in 15-year-old Galway Pipe Tawny casks, and finished in charred oak barrels. It’s also gorgeously packaged in a seriously eye-catching bottle and box.

The tasting notes are layered with toffee, dried fruits, warming spices, and oak and the stunning caramel hue complements the earthy graphics perfectly.

For a special touch, there are just 3,600 bottles of this globally. Cheers!

The stay also includes tours, a beautiful afternoon tea, a gourmet breakfast and a magnificent four-course dinner in the Rainforest Cave, which you share with one of the white lions and a clan of hyenas

I recommend the Jungle Bungalows where you share your room with either a pride of lions, cheetah brothers, tigers or a pair of Malayan sun bears. While the rooms themselves are nothing short of outstanding, it’s hard to soak in your surroundings as you watch your new roommates play outside.

The stay also includes tours, a beautiful afternoon tea, a gourmet breakfast and a magnificent four-course dinner in the Rainforest Cave, which you share with one of the white lions and a clan of hyenas.

There you will join other guests at large tables for a delectable and fun ‘African gourmet dinner party’ – all inclusive.

The up close one-one-one time you spend with the animals here is truly incredible, with meerkat, cheetah, bear, rhino and giraffe encounters on offer for guests.

As the team says, the entire Jamala experience has been designed to maximise the opportunity to ‘subtly impress’ on its guests that everything possible should be done to ensure that these magnificent animals survive in the wild.

This is done whilst providing its guests with a combination of luxury and adventure.

It’s thoughtful, calm, beautifully considered and hands down one of the most exceptional hidden gems in the country.

And if you stay, request the bungalow with sun bears. You won’t regret it.

Louisiana Athletics receives $1.5 million gift from James D. Moncus Family Foundation – Crescent City Sports

Support will help fund Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium and the baseball clubhouse project.

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Department of Athletics has received a $1.5 million gift from the James D. Moncus Family Foundation which will provide support for the continued renovation of Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium and the baseball clubhouse project at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park, it was announced Wednesday.

In recognition of the transformational gift, the premium entryway on the West side of Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium will be named the Jim & Ruth Moncus Premium Entry.

“We are extremely grateful and very appreciative of this generous gift from the Moncus family,” Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Bryan Maggard said. “This investment in Louisiana Athletics will play a key role in our continued efforts to transform our facilities which will enhance the experiences for our student-athletes, coaches and fans.”

A native of Houston, Jim Moncus entered the oil and gas industry following service in the United States Marine Corps. He came to Lafayette in 1962, after his first oil and gas job in Casper, Wyoming, ended suddenly. Moncus worked for Lamb Oil for over a decade; in 1974, he founded Devin International, an oilfield equipment company. Moncus held patents for dozens of oilfield tools and procedures – many still being used today – during an almost 50-year career in the industry.

After selling the company in 2008, Jim and Ruth Moncus shifted their focus to continuing their decades-long commitment to philanthropy, creating the James Devin Moncus Family Foundation and investing in local and regional non-profits.

The Moncus Foundation locally invested millions to establish a new city park, further the arts and education, and ensure the very best of health care for the citizens of Lafayette Parish.

Among their many contributions to the University, the Moncus family has established scholarships and endowed professorships. Their longstanding support of the University resonates in many corners of campus, including arts, nursing, sciences and athletics.

“Jim was an avid and enthusiastic supporter of UL Athletics. He enjoyed attending all sporting events and was a loyal Ragin’ Cajuns fan,” said Debbie Spallino of the James D. Moncus Family Foundation. “The Moncus Foundation is very proud to be a part of this exciting time at the University and honored to continue Jim’s legacy of giving back to the community he loved so much.”

The University posthumously honored Mr. Moncus with an honorary Doctor of Nursing practice degree in December 2021, shortly after his death at age 81. His wife, Ruth, a nurse for 35 years, accepted on his behalf. Ruth Moncus has continued her late husband’s philanthropic work through the Moncus Family Foundation; she was a driving force behind the $7 million gift to UL Lafayette from the James Devin Moncus Family Foundation that will enable the Health Sciences Campus’ continued growth and fund an endowment to support the College of Nursing & Health Sciences.

The $1.5 million gift from the Moncus Family Foundation to Athletics is part of the largest comprehensive fundraising campaign in the University’s history.

Announced in November of 2021, Together: The Campaign for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette aims to raise $500 million. Among the campaign’s priorities: the renovation and maintenance of training and competition spaces for Ragin’ Cajuns student-athletes.

Athletics projects completed as part of the Together Campaign include Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium, Russo Park, the renovation of E.K. Long Gym, the Donald and Janice Mosing SAPC Auditorium, and the Golf Indoor Teaching Facility at Oakbourne Country Club.

The renovated west tower of Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium will offer premium suites, a luxurious club level, loge boxes, and club seats, providing Ragin’ Cajuns fans new opportunities to engage with the football program and the Ragin’ Cajuns Athletic Foundation (RCAF).

Premium suites will include both indoor and outdoor seating, access to a climate-controlled club area, premium catering, and suite attendants. Loge boxes will feature private outdoor seating and premium parking access, while club seats will offer comfortable outdoor seating with armrests and beverage holders. Both loge box and club seat patrons will enjoy access to the exclusive McElligott Club and its amenities.

The upgrades to Russo Park will significantly enhance the facility’s functionality and appeal, featuring a state-of-the-art clubhouse designed to meet the needs of players and staff. The baseball clubhouse will provide a comfortable and efficient space for team operations and newly renovated coaches’ offices.

The renovations will introduce dedicated indoor hitting and pitching areas in the left field corner, allowing athletes to train year-round regardless of weather conditions. These upgrades are set to elevate the overall experience for the team and coaching staff, positioning Russo Park as a top-tier facility on the national level.

Truly spectacular rural escape ready to gift new owners with an enviable country lifestyle

    721 Avonside Road

Perfectly positioned with gorgeous views and loads of modern touches, this Avonside property is nothing short of immaculate. Photo: ALX Creative Media.

Move-in ready and built to suit anyone yearning for that ever-desirable rural lifestyle, 721 Avonside Road at Avonside hosts a beautiful country manor surrounded by 180 acres of native temperate forest and rolling grasslands.

This five-bedroom, two-bathroom home offers plenty of space to entertain, relax and explore, and takes every opportunity to showcase sprawling views across the nearby Dalgety plains.

Set in the quiet rural community of Avonside, about 20 minutes from Jindabyne, the property is bordered by large, natural lifestyle holdings and friendly locals who look after one another.

Sales agent Dani Kell says a “cosy yet grand” feel permeates the entire home.

“Cathedral ceilings, large windows and timber features lend themselves to bright, elegant spaces throughout the ground floor,” she says.

“The sunroom and living room are heated by their own cosy fireplaces and offer an intimate, relaxed atmosphere.”

Also on the ground floor is a large dining room that leads into a country-style kitchen.

“The kitchen is complete with little luxuries that include marble benchtops, a Thermalux wood fire oven, induction stove/oven and butler’s pantry,” Dani says.

“Just around the corner are two of the five bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes. The bathroom they share is sleek and modern, with a free-standing bath, large vanity and contemporary fittings.”

Three more bedrooms await upstairs, the most impressive of which is the master suite, with its private balcony, oversized walk-in wardrobe, ensuite, and an extra room more than suitable for storage or a home office space.

These extra amenities continue outdoors in the form of a deluxe teenager’s retreat featuring its own fireplace, bathroom and climate control.

Number 721 is set up to host with ease thanks to a wine cellar, large entertaining deck, undercover alfresco and swim-spa looking over the valley. Low-maintenance landscaped gardens have already been established, fed by four water tanks with a total capacity of 80,000 litres.

Other outbuildings include a multi-purpose shed, machinery shed, greenhouse and dog run. Two fenced paddocks are ready to house hobby livestock or horses.

Large properties like this are a haven for native wildlife of all kinds. In the surrounding bush, you can expect to see kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, echidnas, various reptiles and vibrant birdlife. There are endless opportunities to hike and explore.

All in all, Dani says this property is not one to be missed.

“I could easily see a large family living here, or maybe a couple who loves to entertain regularly,” she says.

“It’s a beautiful home in an elegant style that isn’t seen as often these days, and for the right person, it will certainly be a cherished retreat from the everyday worries of life.”

  • Novak Djokovic Committed to Deliver Tennis a Final Gift as PTPA’s Head Executive Evaluates the Sport’s Greatest Challenge

Novak Djokovic Committed to Deliver Tennis a Final Gift as PTPA’s Head Executive Evaluates the Sport’s Greatest Challenge

Novak Djokovic is stepping up in a big way for professional tennis. As a passionate athlete who has poured nearly 21 years into his tennis career, he’s now stepping up to give back to the community that has supported him all along. Currently, in the middle of what many speculate to be his final season, the Serb is rallying up the troops for the PTPA. He’s not just serving his best on the court; he’s smashing the barriers around it as he goes.

Last year, Djokovic passionately addressed the need for change within professional tennis, stating, “We all definitely want to see a change at the base level because the 150th player on the planet struggles.” This sentiment is exactly why the PTPA was created; to tackle the existing structures in tennis that haven’t been serving players effectively. As Nole put it, “People don’t realize how expensive this sport is.”

    via Reuters

The world of tennis is reaching a boiling point, and the PTPA is leading the charge—taking legal action against the ATP and WTA. The target? Those suffocating non-competition clauses that prevent players from participating in independent events. It’s a battle that has been brewing for years, and the frustration is palpable. Seasons grow longer, matches stretch endlessly, injuries pile up, and players are left battered and broken. They dedicate their lives to this sport, but are given no reprieve—just more demands, more exhaustion, more silence from those who are supposed to have their backs.

This is why the PTPA is fighting—not just for change, but for fairness, for a future where players have a voice, where their sacrifices are recognized, and where the game respects the people who give it everything. The anger and exhaustion are real, and it’s about time the system takes notice.

Even the CEO of the PTPA, Ahmad Nassar, isn’t mincing words. “The system is so biased against the players, as well as sub-optimal for fans and media and other commercial partners,” he declared, exposing a reality that many know but few dare to say aloud. He’s demanding a shift, not an overnight fix but a long-term transformation. “I’m asking for a 10-year plan because tennis needs a revamp, and nobody seems to have an answer for where we are going next,” Nassar added, his words ringing with the urgency of a sport on the brink of breaking down.

The stark difference between tennis and golf paints an even bleaker picture. Last year, only Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz broke into the top 100 highest-paid athletes, while golf boasted ten players on that list. The Grand Slams may offer the allure of big prize money, but beyond the elite few, the pay drops off a cliff. Tennis players, battling through brutal schedules, punishing heat, and constant injury risk, are often left with aching bodies and empty bank accounts, while golfers can bank millions without even coming close to winning. The inequality is glaring, and it cuts deep.

It’s no wonder the players are fed up. They aren’t just fighting for trophies; they’re fighting for respect, for their future, and for their right to a fair game. Djokovic’s involvement with the PTPA is a testament to his devotion—he knows firsthand what it’s like to fight for everything, to leave it all on the court, and he wants to give his peers a safety net for when they finally hang up their racquets. Even as whispers of retirement grow louder around him, Djokovic isn’t backing down—he’s still in the fight, still determined, still passionate about changing the game for the better. His fire burns bright, and his dedication is a reminder that this battle is far from over.

Novak’s plans long after he’s left the court

After a seven-year-long gap, Novak Djokovic is back in action for his 10th appearance at the Shanghai Masters. He is determined to become the third player in the Open Era to win 100 tour-level titles. Not to mention that he is also aiming to surpass Roger Federer’s record of 71 titles on hard courts. But what fuels his desire to get back on the court time after time?

In a recent press conference, he expressed, “My love for tennis will never feed away. I have a lot of emotions when I am playing. And not particularly only in the tournament, but also in practice sessions. Sometimes it’s not always going your way, but I think my relationship with tennis goes much deeper than a tournament or a year or success or failure.”

Despite fulfilling his dream of winning an Olympic gold medal, the Serbian tennis player admitted to feeling a bit exhausted, which may explain his early exit from the US Open 2024. However, his passion for the sport still burns bright, as evidenced by his victory at the Davis Cup. He expressed his desire to remain connected to tennis even after retiring from the court, stating, “It’s a sport that I fell in love with when I was very young. I still have a love for the sport. Even when I retire from professional tennis, I’m going to stay in tennis, stay involved in different roles because I feel like I owe this sport a lot for what it has given to me.”

Talk about unwavering commitment! Seems like Djokovic is ready to show that his passion for tennis remains as strong as ever. So fans better keep a close eye on this player. The Masters 100 might just be another incredible chapter in his legendary career.

  • Why Joe Mazzulla thinks Jayson Tatum’s Olympic benching was ‘a gift’ – NBC 7 San Diego

Why Joe Mazzulla thinks Jayson Tatum’s Olympic benching was ‘a gift’ – NBC 7 San Diego

Jayson Tatum just won his first NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in a season where he was voted First Team All-NBA for the third consecutive year. And yet, he should still have plenty of motivation and hunger entering the 2024-25 season.

The great players always have that chip on their shoulder, even after winning.

For Tatum, he still has plenty left to achieve. He didn’t win Finals MVP last season. Jaylen Brown was the deserving winner after a fantastic performance against the Dallas Mavericks. So that’s one award Tatum can strive for. And getting benched in two games at the 2024 Paris Olympics with Team USA also should serve as a source of motivation for Tatum.

Tatum said Tuesday at Celtics Media Day that head coach Joe Mazzulla was “probably the happiest person” after the superstar forward didn’t win Finals MVP and went through adversity during the Olympics. He also added, “If you know Joe, it makes sense.”

Mazzulla wants the best for his players, and he knows that those tough experiences will only help Tatum as he continues his career.

He went into further detail after Wednesday’s practice.

“I think that comes off as love,” Mazzulla told reporters when asked about Tatum’s comment, as seen in the video above. “That’s just the way that I love him and the relationship that we have, and I appreciate that he accepts my perspective and the way that we go about talking about it. But at the end of the day, he’s 26, and I just said, ‘Listen, you’ve accomplished so much in this league, and just take a step back and appreciate that and then be grateful that you have, God willing, 10, 12, 14 years left in this league — who knows what you’re gonna see.’

“I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet because of how much he works and how he’s willing to grow. So I thought it was great that he’s got something he’s gonna work towards. And sometimes when you get success, you don’t have that next hunger right in front of you.

“Sometimes you gotta wait for it. Sometimes it’s a loss, sometimes it’s a losing streak, and he was able to get that right in front of him. So I just thought it was a gift. It doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be pissed off about it. I didn’t want to take away from how that may affect him in real time because I wasn’t there. But as his coach and as somebody that really cares about him, I thought it was great because it gives him something to work towards.”

Mazzulla has a special relationship with his players, and this is another example. He knows what buttons to push to maximize their on-court production and keep them locked in on the team goals.

Complacency has been an issue for many defending champions in NBA history, but after hearing Mazzulla and Celtics players talk at Media Day earlier this week, it doesn’t sound like this team will be plagued by that problem.
