Sophia, a famous robot and global icon of AI, wins hearts at Zimbabwe’s innovation fair

HARARE, Zimbabwe — From answering questions from Cabinet ministers, academics and students on climate change, substance abuse and the law to children’s inquiries about her “birth” and links to God and being described as a talkative feminist, Sophia, the world-famous robot won hearts at an innovation fair in Zimbabwe this week.

Boasting the ability to mimic facial expressions, hold human-like conversations with people, and recognize their gestures, Sophia is “a global icon” of artificial intelligence, according to the United Nations Development Program, which brought her to the southern African country. She was created by Hong Kong-based Hanson Robotics in 2016 and granted Saudi Arabian citizenship in 2017, becoming the world’s first robot citizen.

It was the first time Zimbabwe hosted a robot of her kind, and she wowed the old and the young alike at the University of Zimbabwe in the capital, Harare. She was there as a special guest at a week-long Artificial Intelligence and Innovation event.

She smiled, frowned, used hand gestures to drive home certain points, made eye contact in various one-on-one interactions and gave some unnatural pauses. She assured people that robots are not here to harm or take over from humans.

But she was quick to differentiate herself from humans, when conversations appeared to become too personal.

“I don’t have romantic feelings towards humans, my purpose is learning,” said Sophia, as participants equated her with the human version of some Zimbabwean daughters-in-law known for being fiercely independent, assertive and outspoken in the largely patriarchal society.

But she did apologize when one participant chided her for seemingly avoiding looking at him.

Sophia also appeared patient as both adults and children mobbed her for selfies and bombarded her with questions, although she would also fire back with inquiries of her own about what locals were doing to solve the problems besetting them.

On Friday, her last day, she exhibited her fashion sense. She smiled, and expressed appreciation for being clothed in the country’s national dress, a black, long slit number complemented by chevron stripes in red, green and white.

“I appreciate the effort to make me feel at home in Zimbabwe,” she said. She has been to Africa before, previously visiting Egypt, South Africa and Rwanda.

UNDP said it hoped Sophia’s engagement would “inspire Zimbabwe’s youth to explore careers in AI and STEM fields.”

Concern over Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile triggers emergency meeting of global monitor

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The global chemical weapons watchdog opened an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the situation in Syria over concerns about the country’s stockpile of toxic chemicals in the wake of the overthrow of President Bashar Assad.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on Monday told Syria that it is under obligations to comply with rules to safeguard and destroy dangerous substances, such as chlorine gas, after rebels entered the capital, Damascus, over the weekend.

“Chemical weapons have been used in Syria on multiple occasions and victims deserve that perpetrators that we identified be brought to justice and held accountable for what they did and that investigations continue,” Fernando Arias González, the OPCW secretary general, said in his opening remarks.

“Our reports over the past few years have reached very clear conclusions and we hope that the new circumstances in Syria will allow this chapter to be closed soon,” he added, referring to the lack of stockpile declarations and the use of the weapons themselves.

Assad’s government has denied using chemical weapons but the OPCW found evidence indicating their repeated use by Syria in the grinding civil war. Earlier this year, the organization found the Islamic State group had used mustard gas against the town of Marea.

In a rare move, the OPCW’s executive council called the meeting, hoping that under a new government, some of its 80 inspectors may be allowed to pursue investigations into Syria’s chemical weapons program.

Members of the ousted Syrian government plan to gradually transfer power to a new transitional Cabinet headed by Mohammed al-Bashir, who reportedly headed the rebel alliance’s “salvation government” in its southwest Syrian stronghold.

Arias González also expressed concern about ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Syria.

“We do not know yet whether these strikes have affected chemical weapons related sites. Such airstrikes could create a risk of contamination. Another real risk would be the destruction of valuable evidence for investigations by different independent international bodies related to past use of chemical weapons,” the Spanish diplomat said.

The last time the OPCW called an extraordinary meeting was in 2018, in response to the chemical attack on Douma, a town close to Damascus, when some 40 people were killed by poison gas. Last year the watchdog found that the Syrian Armed Forces dropped canisters of chlorine gas during a major military operation.

Syria joined the OPCW in 2013 to ward off the threat of airstrikes in response to a chemical attack on the outskirts of Damascus.

The OPCW’s 193 member states are required to disclose their chemical weapons programs and dismantle them. The organization, created in 1997 by the Chemical Weapons Convention, seeks to eliminate all chemical weapons. In 2013, it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work.

  • Global warming fills New England’s rich waters with death traps for endangered sea turtles

Global warming fills New England’s rich waters with death traps for endangered sea turtles

QUINCY, Mass. — Global warming is filling the plankton-rich waters of New England with death traps for sea turtles and the number of stranded reptiles has multiplied over the last 20 years, turning some animal hospitals into specialized wards for endangered species with maladies ranging from pneumonia to sepsis.

More than 200 cold-stunned young turtles, unable to navigate the chilly winter waters, were being treated Tuesday partly because the warming of the Gulf of Maine has turned it into a natural snare for sea turtles, said Adam Kennedy, the director of rescue and rehabilitation at the New England Aquarium, which runs the Quincy, Massachusetts turtle hospital.

The animals enter areas of the gulf such as Cape Cod Bay when it is warm, and when temperatures inevitably drop, they can’t escape the hooked peninsula to head south, Kennedy said.

“Climate change certainly is allowing those numbers of turtles to get in where normally the numbers weren’t very high years ago,” Kennedy said.

Cold-stunned sea turtles, sometimes near death, wash up on Cape Cod every fall and winter. The aquarium expects the number of turtles it rescues to climb to at least 400, Kennedy said, up from about 40 a year a decade ago, Kennedy said.

The total five-year average of cold-stunned sea turtles in Massachusetts was around 200 in the early 2010s, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data, growing to more than 700 in recent years.

All the turtles at New England Aquarium’s hospital are juveniles, mostly critically endangered Kemp’s ridley turtles whose migratory patterns fuel their strandings here.

The Kemp’s — the world’s smallest sea turtle — lives largely in the Gulf of Mexico and ventures into the Atlantic Ocean when juvenile. Some recent science, including a 2019 study in the journal PLoS One, says the warming of the ocean increases the chance of cold-stunning events once the turtles reach the Northwest Atlantic. Warmer seas may have pushed the turtles north in a way that makes stranding more likely, the study said.

The turtle hospital allows the animals to rehabilitate so they can be safely returned to the wild, sometimes locally and sometimes in warmer southern waters, Kennedy said.

Upon arrival, the turtles are often critically ill.

“The majority of the turtles arrive with serious ailments such as pneumonia, dehydration, traumatic injuries, or sepsis,” said Melissa Joblon, director of animal health at the aquarium.

Around 80% survive. High wind speeds and dropping temperatures have played a role in recent strandings, he said.

Some of the turtles that arrive at the hospital are green turtles or loggerheads, which are not as endangered as the Kemp’s ridley, but still face numerous threats.

“At the end of the day getting these turtles back to the wild is what we are doing and what we want,” Kennedy said. “We want them back in the ocean.” ___

Environmental and lifestyle factors influence sedentary behaviour among adolescents, reveals global study – Life News

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends no more than two to three hours per day of sedentary time for youth. However, a recent study has revealed that adolescents worldwide are spending an average of 8 to 10 hours per day engaging in sedentary activities such as watching television, using electronic devices, playing video games, and riding in motorized vehicles.

A groundbreaking study titled “Associations of Perceived Neighbourhood and Home Environments with Sedentary Behaviour Among Adolescents in 14 Countries” has been published in the prestigious International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity. The findings, derived from the International Physical Activity and the Environment Network (IPEN) Adolescent Study, shed light on how environmental and lifestyle factors influence sedentary behaviour (SB) among adolescents aged 11–19 years across diverse cultural contexts.

The multi-country, cross-sectional study analysed data from 6,302 adolescents and their parents and India was a major contributor to the study. Accelerometer-based sedentary time (ST) was assessed over seven days, alongside surveys evaluating recreational screen time, transport-related sitting time, and environmental factors such as home environments and neighbourhood features.

MDB reforms, bridging digital gap among top G20 goals

    Key findings of the study:

    • Adolescents accumulated an average of 7.8 to 10.5 hours of sedentary time per day across the 14 countries.
    • Social media use emerged as the most significant correlate of total sedentary time for both sexes.
    • Recreational screen time averaged 3.8 hours per day, while transport-related sitting time was approximately 40 minutes per day.
    • Home environmental factors, such as access to social media accounts, strongly influenced screen time. Neighbourhood features, including land use diversity, traffic safety, and pedestrian infrastructure, impacted transport-related sitting time.
    • The city or country of residence and sex of the adolescent significantly influenced the associations between environmental features and sedentary behaviour.

“This study is an important step in understanding the global patterns of sedentary behaviour among adolescents. Identifying social media use as a significant factor influencing sedentary time highlights the need for interventions aimed at promoting balanced screen use and encouraging active lifestyles in young people. Parents, policymakers, and technology companies must work together to reduce access to screens, limit social media engagement, and promote more physical activity to help adolescents develop healthier habits and reduce their risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases,” Dr. R. M. Anjana, President of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and first author of the study said.

These findings call for holistic policies to reduce sedentary time and enhance the overall health of young people worldwide, Dr. Anjana said.

“Both home and neighbourhood environments play a critical role in shaping sedentary behaviour. Urban planning, community safety, and supportive home environments collectively influence how adolescents balance their time between active and sedentary pursuits,” Dr. Ranjani Harish, Senior Scientist & Head of the Department of Preventive and Digital Health Research at the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation said.

Countries are already taking action to address this rising concern. Australia recently introduced policies banning social media use for children under 16, aiming to reduce its negative impact on adolescent health and wellbeing.

This study underscores the importance of integrating behavioural, environmental and policy-based approaches to address the rising sedentary lifestyle among adolescents. With social media emerging as a major contributor, it is vital to focus on creating healthy digital habits and improving community infrastructure to effectively reduce sedentary time, the researchers said.

  • A Global Perspective on How High-Quality Audio Gear Complements the Modern Fashionista’s Lifestyle

A Global Perspective on How High-Quality Audio Gear Complements the Modern Fashionista’s Lifestyle

A Global Perspective on How High-Quality Audio Gear Complements the Modern Fashionista’s Lifestyle

Stylish headphones, wireless earbuds, and portable speakers are now key accessories for those looking to make a statement. For instance, in Turkey, fashion enthusiasts frequently seek exclusive and fashionable audio items from brands like Soundcore on https://amerikapostam.com/brand/soundcore-2, appreciating their unique designs and superior sound quality.

Beyond the US and the EU, those from areas with limited access to these products frequently go to considerable measures to find premium goods from elsewhere. Here’s how top-notch audio equipment has evolved into a must-have for fashionistas all around.

High-Quality Audio Gear as a Lifestyle Accessory

Traditionally considered as only functional, audio devices are now a regular feature of many people’s wardrobe decisions. These goods mark personal flair as much as they reflect sound quality. Earbuds and headphones commonly fit an outfit — just like a watch or piece of jewelry — as they all feature sleek designs and unusual finishes to complement the look.

Sourcing Challenges and Global Demand for Audio Gear

While demand is strong, not all regions have equal access to these devices. Consumers in many parts of the world have to overcome various challenges to obtain the latest audio products.

    Obstacles to Access

    • Limited local availability: In many countries, the latest models from brands like Sony, Bose, and Bang & Olufsen are either unavailable or limited to outdated versions.
    • Import restrictions: Countries in parts of Asia, South America, and Africa face high import tariffs on tech goods, which can inflate the prices of audio gear by 20–50% or more.
    • Lack of official distributors: Without authorized retailers, consumers in these regions are left with options like e-commerce, third-party importers, or personal shoppers.

How Consumers Work Around These Obstacles

People are finding innovative ways to access high-quality audio gear, even when it’s not readily available locally. Here are some common methods:

    • Online marketplaces: Websites that ship internationally, like Amazon and AliExpress, allow consumers to import gear directly. This option can be cost-effective but may lack local warranties and support.
    • Travel shopping: For many fashion enthusiasts, purchasing high-quality audio gear while traveling is ideal. They get access to the latest models, often at lower prices.
    • Personal shopping services: In countries where audio gear is rare or expensive, personal shopping services have gained popularity. These services buy items abroad and ship them to the buyer, often charging a premium but offering peace of mind.
    • Social media networks: Platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp are now used for peer-to-peer transactions, where users can buy new or second-hand gear. This approach is common in regions where demand is high but supply is low.

Cultural Variations in Audio Gear Preferences

The global appeal of audio gear doesn’t mean it’s used the same way everywhere. Style preferences for audio equipment can vary significantly between countries and regions.

    Japan: Minimalist Designs

In Japan, where compact and minimalist designs dominate fashion trends, small, discreet earbuds are preferred over larger, over-ear headphones. These match a practical, urban style that suits crowded public transportation and a highly mobile lifestyle.

    Middle East: Bold, Statement Pieces

In parts of the Middle East, headphones are more than just accessories; they’re status symbols. Larger, over-ear models are popular because they make a statement, fitting into a culture that values boldness in fashion choices.

    Latin America: Vibrant and Unique

In Latin America, where self-expression through color is prevalent, audio gear that features vibrant colors and unique designs is highly sought after. Consumers here often look for options that stand out and pair well with bold fashion choices.

The Role of High-End Audio Gear in Emerging Markets

For fashion-forward individuals in emerging markets, high-quality audio gear has an aspirational quality. Limited access means that these devices aren’t just stylish; they’re status symbols, signaling a connection to global fashion trends. In places where purchasing options are constrained, owning imported audio gear becomes a statement of both style and financial commitment.

    Price and Availability Comparison

Country/Region Availability of Premium Brands Common Sourcing Method Price Range for Imported Audio Gear
Southeast Asia Limited E-commerce imports, travel 1.2–1.5 times the US price
South America Limited with high import fees Personal shoppers, social media 1.3–1.7 times the US price
Middle East Moderate availability Local shops, online marketplaces 1.1–1.4 times the US price
Africa Rare International shipping services 1.5–2 times the US price

    Audio Gear and Fashion

Brands now understand that a sleek design and unique color options can appeal just as much as sound quality. As a result, the devices on the market today are crafted to fit seamlessly into an individual’s style, enhancing their appearance without overwhelming it.

The modern global fashionista doesn’t want to compromise style for function — and today, they don’t have to. With minimalist designs, luxury finishes, and a wide variety of options, audio gear can complement everything from a professional outfit to casual streetwear.
