    Adam Gajan had to sit out the Bulldogs’ first game

    of the 2024-25 season.

    He was deemed ineligible for one game

    because the Slovakian played half of an exhibition in his home country during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21.

    Gajan himself wasn’t playing for a pro team, but for the country’s national team development program against a pro team. However, the NCAA deemed it to be a professional contest. So they made him sit for his sin.

    “Because of COVID rules, there was just professional hockey allowed in Slovakia,” Gajan said. “So they made some extra games, exhibition games, against the NTDP in Slovakia. It was a junior team playing in professional jerseys so it looks like we are a professional team because of COVID rules.”

    UMD women’s sophomore goaltender Eve Gascon also played in what the NCAA would deem “professional games” and for a “professional team” back in 2021-22 when she suited up and started two regular season games for the Gatineau Olympiques in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.

    “It was so fun. I remember every moment of it,” said Gascon, who at age 18 was one of just four women to play a Canadian Hockey League game,

    and the first female goaltender in 22 years to win a CHL game.

    “I just had the chance to grow so much. Having to deal with that pressure with the media and the fans, it was hard at first, but when I stepped back, it was a good experience. The guys were always super nice with me. The games were a high level of hockey. It made me grow in a way I can’t describe.”

    Gascon didn’t have to sit out a single game,

    despite the NCAA’s longtime stance that major junior teams and leagues in the CHL — like Gatineau and the QMJHL — are professional teams.

    That’s because the NCAA

    has different rules for men’s and women’s hockey,

    archaic rules in the age of name, image and likeness (NIL) legislation

    that will hopefully be ancient history very, very soon.

    For decades, men have been banned from playing major junior in Canada and the United States because some players in CHL leagues are under NHL contracts. They’ve signed pro deals already, but have been sent back to their major junior team for more seasoning.

    The CHL ban has also extended to any and all leagues that the NCAA deems to be professional, all to keep future NCAA prospects out of the CHL. That’s why Gajan got dinged for his half an exhibition in Slovakia.

    This isn’t an issue in women’s hockey because the sport is protected by the following clause

    in the NCAA rule book:

    In sports other than men’s ice hockey and skiing, before initial full-time collegiate enrollment, an individual may compete on a professional team, provided the individual does not receive more than actual and necessary expenses to participate on the team.

    That clause is why Gascon could play in the CHL. It’s why Emma Soderberg played two full seasons of pro hockey in Sweden’s SDHL before coming to UMD. The SDHL is where

    is playing in 2024-25. It’s the 18-year-old’s fourth season in the league, having played with former Bulldogs Anneke Linser and Michelle Lowenhielm in the past.

    The NCAA is in the process of righting its wrong

    after being sued for antitrust violations this fall.

    A proposal was introduced this month that would allow men’s prospects to play major junior and play for professional teams

    “as long as they are not paid more than actual and necessary expenses as part of that participation.”

    The proposal will be considered at the NCAA’s meeting in November.

    Gascon said a lot of her Gatineau teammates would have liked to play in the NCAA. It’s a high level of hockey, but the QMJHL is also a really good league to play in. The opportunity to do both would be a great way for players in Quebec to grow on and off the ice, she said.

    “I think it can be really cool for them,” Gascon said. “I know that for the NCAA for men, the guys are coming in older than the girls. I think they can have this balance of playing in the QMJHL, a good league, and then coming to the NCAA and continue their studies and stuff. I think it can be cool. It could be a really good opportunity for a lot of Quebec guys.”

    It’s likely that when the ink dries, CHL players who have signed NHL deals will likely still be banned from participating in the NCAA. They shouldn’t.

    Instead, the NCAA should allow all college athletes to sign with NHL, PWHL, NBA, WNBA, NFL or MLB teams while retaining eligibility, as long as they don’t play a regular season game in those leagues.

    What’s the difference these days between an athlete getting a signing bonus from the Minnesota Wild and taking an endorsement deal with Chipotle?

    Why not let an undrafted free agent like Ben Steeves or an NHL draft pick like Dominic James sign a pro deal — giving an NHL team peace of mind that a player won’t go elsewhere after college — and stay in school to get better on the ice while earning a degree?

    No one loses in this scenario. Not the student-athlete. Not the school who has something new to market. Not the professional team that might be signing a player who isn’t really ready for the pros.

    The NCAA can be proactive and makes these moves now, or wait for another lawsuit to come along.

    Elton Welsby has claimed ‘women commentators are not as good as men’, but the former television presenter wouldn’t ban them from sports broadcasts.

    Welsby was best known as a presenter and featured on several popular sports programmes during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, including Match Night, Match Time and On the Ball.

    He also made up part of the ITV team that covered both the Euros and World Cups between 1982 and 1992, as well as occasionally covering the Olympic Games, when they were broadcast on the channel.

    Welsby certainly knows a thing or two about sports broadcasting, but he believes the industry has taken a turn for the worse.

    Slamming the role of female commentators on male events, Welsby told The Telegraph: “I was brought up on Hugh Johns and Brian Moore. They had just the perfect voices for live television commentary.

    “The voice would rise with the crescendo of the crowd when the goal is scored. The crowd erupts and they are with them. I don’t think the lady commentators can do that, they don’t have the same voice. But good luck to them.”

    He continued: “Maybe half the audience are ladies and they prefer that, it’s just personal – nothing more. If I was head of Sky Sports or BBC Sport or ITV Sport I wouldn’t say ‘ban lady commentators’, they deserve their chance.

    “But it is like watching women’s football or rugby – I choose not to watch it but I don’t condemn them for doing it. It is subjective. That is not getting me in trouble at all.”

    Welsby hasn’t been afraid to speak out against the new landscape of sports media, having previously blasted one of his former employers.

    During an interview with The Daily Express in 2015, Welsby claimed Soccer Sunday – a programme he anchored for Granada – was “a poor show with poor content and poor journalistic standards.”

    But Welsby did admit he wishes he was given a longer shot at the top prior to Sky Sports taking a stranglehold on the industry in 1992.

    On his time as a presenter, Welsby added: “In terms of the live football, I think I was cut off in my prime.

    “After Euro 92 where I had lived with Big Jack [Charlton] and we were presenting live with no London back-up.

    “It was all presented from the ground with me and Big Jack. I felt visually and mentally I was at my prime. I still had eight more years at Granada.

    “Who knows? Had ITV still had the exclusive contract, I’m not saying I would be doing it to this day. But there comes a time when ‘are you eye-candy?’ No you’re not. Let’s get someone who is.”

    What Are Good Fats? 

    1. Unsaturated Fats

    These are the MVPs when it comes to fats. They’re liquid at room temp and help lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and keep your heart in check. You’ll find these mostly in plant-based foods.

    2. Monounsaturated Fats

    Found in olive oil, peanut oil, avocados, and nuts like almonds and pecans. Seeds like pumpkin and sesame are also great sources.

    3. Polyunsaturated Fats

    Think sunflower, corn, and flaxseed oils. Walnuts, flax seeds, fish, and even canola oil (which has both mono and polyunsaturated fats) are good picks.

    4. Omega-3 Fats

    These are especially great for heart health and can lower the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease. Since our body doesn’t produce omega-3s, it’s super important to get them from your diet.

    What Are Unhealthy Fats?

    1. Saturated Fats

    These guys are solid at room temp. Every food with fat contains some level of saturated fats. They mostly come from animal products, but certain plant foods like coconut oil and ghee also have them. While too much saturated fat can raise bad cholesterol (LDL) and apolipoprotein B (Apo B), eating them in moderation, around 6-7% of your total fat intake, is okay-just be mindful of where it’s coming from.

    2. Trans Fats

    These are the bad boys hiding in processed foods like baked goods and margarine. Trans fats raise your LDL (bad cholesterol) and lower HDL (good cholesterol), upping your risk for heart disease. They’re also linked to inflammation, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Not good.

    • Hydrogenated Oils: These are a major source of trans fats, used to make processed foods last longer, but they come with serious health risks. Hydrogenated oils contribute to plaque buildup in your arteries, which can lead to heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

    Tips For A Healthier Fat Intake:

    • Choose Healthy Fats: Load up on nuts, seeds, fish, and olive oil.
    • Limit Saturated Fats: Cut back on red meat, butter, and high-fat dairy. Opt for lean meats and low-fat dairy instead.
    • Avoid Trans Fats: Read labels and avoid anything with “partially hydrogenated oils.”

    For W’s annual The Originals portfolio, we asked stars of film, fashion, art, music, and more to share their insights on staying true to themselves. See this year’s full class of creatives here.

    Cherry World is a new lifestyle brand formed by a ragtag group of idealists: Josh LeVine, cofounder of the Los Angeles–based denim label Frame; Francesca Burns, a stylist, consultant, and publisher who has worked with the likes of Mert Alas & Marcus ­Piggott; Fergus Purcell, a commercial artist perhaps best known for designing Palace Skateboards’ logo; and the veteran photographer Glen Luchford, whose 1990s campaigns for Prada have been recognized across the art and design worlds.

    Josh LeVine: We really just wanted to use Cherry World as a platform to work with our friends. Having been in the fashion space for a handful of years at this point, it’s really just about wanting to do something in our way, and with who we thought were the best of the best.

    Francesca Burns: It’s so exciting and exhilarating to work in this constant, dynamic exchange of ideas. Really, it’s very fun. I can’t put a better word to it.

    How do you approach who is best at what?

    Fergus Purcell: We’re a small group. That means the communication is very fluid, as are our roles. Everyone’s ideas are valid, and they can manifest easily. The solid rock is Josh’s production smarts—and his passion. As a commercial artist, my thing is never solely about ideas; it’s about how you make the good ideas into reality. That’s why Josh occupies the key role: the make-it-happen person.

    Glen Luchford: I’m not sure we ever said, “You’re doing this and I’m doing that,” although my experience tells me that’s a good idea. Everyone seems to instinctively know what they’re doing and gets on with it. It’s a hassle-free zone.

    The DNA of the brand binds the skater heritage of Los Angeles, where Josh and Glen live, with the street style of London, where Francesca and Fergus live. Plus, a healthy splash of global cannabis culture.

    FB: And we really wanted to create a brand that was focused around a California lifestyle. We talked a lot about a young Rick Rubin, via Snoop Doggy Dogg. This kind of energy, freedom, relaxation, and free-spiritedness. As an English person, I have grown up watching that fantastic part of American ­culture. The skate culture of California, and South L.A. culture more generally, has always held this real appeal. Often, being an outsider—from that point of view—you become really optimistic about these ideas. When we were researching old skate and surf brands, really going deep into this world, it was just so exciting because these are the things that I grew up looking at and loving. Obviously, Fergus comes from a background in skate culture. So for him, California was such an important part of that identity. And for Glen, too, he started off taking pictures of skateboarders. He talks a lot about how that culture has a real romance to it.

    Is the name Cherry World connected to the choice of a scorpion as a logo?

    JL: “Cherry” means so many different things. There is the connotation of a cherry red car, or the bowl in the pipe still being “cherry.” And then, obviously, “world” makes it feel so much bigger—bigger than perhaps it is at this point. A subculture aspect is driving the brand identity. It’s liberating to just do whatever you want. What about doing a weed leaf on the button? What about a scorpion logo? I want to get Ferg’s answer on the scorpion.

    FP: It’s something to do with the feeling of watching kung fu movies in the afternoon—Shaolin Wooden Men or Drunken Master.

    What are the core pieces of the debut collection?

    GL: Good clothes, good vibes.

    JL: Amazing, beautiful products made in L.A. Killer jeans and killer tees and killer cashmere sweaters and killer woven shirts.

    FP: “Let’s make stuff in America. It does cost more to do that, but what a cool thing to do”—that was the position. The resulting product is really good.

    GL: Personally, I love the green varsity jacket. But the denim is where we’re putting a lot of energy, and I’m excited about that.

    FB: Denim is really the backbone of all of it. Some personal photography from Glen’s archives also appears throughout the collection.

    GL: Josh and Ferg suggested some ideas, and I liked them, so we fished them out.

    JL: There’s a sweater we’re doing called the Carl, named after Glen’s childhood best friend. He took a photo of Carl when he was younger. We found it and we digitized it, and we’ve done it as a four-yarn jacquard sweater. It almost looks like a photo from way back, but it’s actually a lightweight sweater.

    GL: Carl was the first punk I ever met in the late ’70s, so he had to squeeze in there someplace.

    FB: Incorporating some of Glen and Fergus’s work has been so, so important.

    JL: For next season, we’ve taken some of the first commercial photography Glen did, shooting Lollapalooza back in the day, and Ferg developed a printout of it for shirting. Lots of Ferg’s art has been put into the clothing via graphics, screen printing, embroidery, and intarsia. We want to integrate these ideas in really interesting ways, rather than just screen printing a photo on a T-shirt.

    Will any of you make original works specifically for Cherry World?

    FB: Glen shot part of the lookbook, and I shot part of it. Glen is English and has been living in America for a really long time, but he has such strong roots in London. So we were casting friends and family, like Mark Lebon, for example. Mark is not only a photographer in his own right, but the father of the ­photographers Tyrone Lebon and Frank Lebon. He’s also Glen’s old landlord. Glen used to live with Mark. Mark used to be my boyfriend Angelo’s teacher at college as well. So we were like, “Can you come and do some pictures?”

    GL: I don’t think a lot of thought went into it. We just got some buds together and had a fun day, which seems to be the number one doctrine of CW: Let’s have a good time.
