    Are Idlis Really Protein-Rich? What Is The Reason Behind This Misconception?

    To begin with, we need to understand why idlis are linked to protein in the first place. It is majorly because idlis contain urad dal, which people feel makes the dish a good source of nutrients. Is it really so? Krish Ashok says, “It’s not”. According to him, “An idli contains one to two grams of protein at best, which is equal to a puri that has two grams of protein (due to gluten).” He further shares two major reasons for the same.

    Reason 1. Not enough dal in idli batter:

    A quintessential idli batter contains three parts of rice and one part of urad dal, which is actually in a very low quantity. The food expert adds that it’s worse in restaurants. They use the dal in much lesser quantities due to the high price.

    Reason 2. Dal is not primary protein source

    Dals are a staple in every Indian household. They are easy to procure and prepare and have a rich nutrient profile. However, they are not the primary sources of protein. According to Krish Ashok, dals are rich in healthy carbs, which happen to have a good amount of protein because of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

    How Can You Make Idlis Protein-Packed?

    According to the Manasollasa – one of the earliest cookbooks of India, written in the 12th Century, idli is referred to as ‘iddarika’, made entirely out of urad dal. According to the food expert, adding rice to the batter is a modern cost-cutting phenomenon, majorly due to famines and colonial policies. Krish Ashok further shares two simple tips to make the dish high in protein.

    1. Change the ratio:

    Instead of going for the quintessential 3:1 ratio for idli batter, you can always try increasing the amount of dal and decreasing the rice content. For instance, a Kanchipuram idli uses rice and dal in a 2:1 or 1:1 ratio. “This will help you get two to three grams of protein per idli,” he adds. Here’s a quick recipe for Kanchipuram idli.

    2. Replace urad dal:

    You can replace the urad dal with soybeans to make the dish protein-rich. For the unversed, a 100-gram soybean contains around 36 grams of protein, as per USDA. By doing this, you can get one idli with around four grams of protein, states Krish Ashok.

    ‘I’m not here to play the victim… it’s a journey,’ Packer tells Bartlett in the footage. 

    ‘You’re not interviewing someone who’s saying to you, “I’ve got it worked out and I’ve got all the answers,”‘ he continued. 

    ‘I’m not that person. I’m here saying I’m doing my best.’

    Williams will also open up on his own journey, and in the preview said he relates to Packer’s struggle.

    ‘[It’s] the same sort of illness that we share. It’s a disease of isolation,’ Williams says.

    In recent years, Packer has said he is now the ‘happiest’ he’s been, after shedding 25kg in 75 days and ditching the seven mood-altering drugs he was taking to help with his mental health. 

    ‘I’m roughly 130kg now and want to be back to 100kg by the end of 2022. I want to swim with my kids at Bondi when we’re all in Sydney together next year and be 100kg,’ he told The Weekend Australian from his home in in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at the time. 

    The businessman said he quit the antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs he was prescribed in March, and is now looking to ‘rehabilitate’ his reputation in Australia.

    There were multiple contributing factors that combined to his downward spiral. 

    Scandals marred his jet-set lifestyle, from a deal that saw him under scrutiny based on his political ties in Israel to a legal quagmire in China when officials from Crown Resorts, where he served as director, were detained in relation to illegal gambling charges.

    Even his Tinseltown dreams were tainted – with the $100 million collapse of his production company RatPac with Hollywood producer Brett Ratner.

    In the midst of his despair, Packer reveals he turned to old friend Warren Beatty, and spent years living in the Hollywood star’s guest house, eventually calling him ‘Dad’ – though he’s keen to point out that means no disrespect to his later father, Kerry, who engineered so much of the family’s runaway business success.

    Packer counts numerous household names among his friends – from Robert de Niro to Leonardo DiCaprio – and since his youth was firmly entrenched in the celebrity set, even flirting with Scientology for a time before distancing himself from the church, in the vein of so many box-office actors and actresses.

    The book describes Packer’s personal torment, drink and mental issues, which the billionaire describes as ‘very scary.’ 

    He says he came to the realization his problems were only ‘getting worse’ – causing him to be ‘desperately worried,’ according to the extract in The Australian.

    Beatty is notorious for avoiding media interviews but he chose to sit down and talk about Packer for the book, a sign of how much he values and cares for the man. 

    The actor would be the one who helped Packer finally seek help, referring him to a top psychiatrist who immediately asked him: ‘Are you trying to kill yourself?’

    ‘I don’t know if I started crying, but I thought to myself, “I don’t want to have $1.4 billion of debt any more. Why am I doing this?”‘ Packer said at the time.

The maximum temperature that your steamer or pressure cooker can reach is 120°C. Lactobacilli – the primary bacterium present in your idli and dosa batter – does not sustain a temperature over 50°C. And no one consumes idli and dosa batter raw since it will give us tummy issues. So, the lactobacilli die at 120°C, meaning the cooked result does not have this bacterium.

    So, Are Idli And Dosa Unhealthy?

    Absolutely not! Nutritionist Amita Gadre shares that just because you steam or cook your idli or dosa, it does not make it unhealthy. This is because the fermentation of sugars or starches is easier to digest. Moreover, idli and dosa have prebiotics since it has fibre because of cooked dal and rice which are going to be helpful for your gut health.

But here’s the catch-one group consumed four tablespoons of EVOO daily, while the other had less than one teaspoon a day.

    After a month, here’s what they found:

    • Both groups saw improved cholesterol levels across the board.
    • Everyone had better heart health markers compared to their previous diet.
    • The low EVOO group had a slight edge, with lower levels of LDL (the “bad”) cholesterol.

    During the study, those who started with a low EVOO diet and switched to more olive oil saw their bad cholesterol levels go up. Meanwhile, people who cut back on EVOO actually saw improvements. The pattern held true for other key heart health markers, too. So, what would you say is the takeaway? Eating less extra virgin olive oil as part of a plant-based diet might be a smart move, especially for those at higher risk of heart disease.

    But before you swear off EVOO forever, the researchers noted it’s not all bad. It’s just that “getting fats from whole plant sources like nuts, seeds, and avocados is probably better than relying on refined oils, including EVOO,” the study concluded.
