Sheridan Hawks Junior Hockey Team Sweeps Home And Home Series Vs. Gillette; Prepare For Return Trip To Great Falls – Sheridan Media

The Sheridan Hawks Junior Hockey Team took care of business against one team that was trying to catch up to them in the standings, and are now getting ready to play another team that’s right behind them.

This past weekend, the team won a home and home series vs. Gillette with scores of 8-3 and 8-4.

Josh Serino scored hat tricks in both games.

Head Coach J.J. Santagata says when the games were being played 5-on-5, the Hawks did great, but work is needed on both sides of the power play.

“I think we just came out, we just executed little details, face off plays were really great, getting pucks to the net were great, finding 2nd and 3rd opportunities were great. I think our special teams honestly were really really bad this weekend, but to walk away with 4 points and only score 1 power play goal and let up 3 penalty kill goals is obviously not ideal, but still walk away with 4 points and I think 5 on 5 we played really well, so I was happy with that.”

Up next is another trip to Great Falls, Montana.

The Americans are right behind Sheridan for 2nd place in the NA3HL Frontier Division, and are the only team so far to have success vs. first place Helena.

Coach Santagata adds these 2 teams have split their 4 head-to-head games so far this season, and the Hawks are expecting a challenging weekend.

“They have some new guys since we haven’t seen them in about a month, so we know they’re going to be a good team, coming off beating Helena 1-0 in Helena and then winning their last 3 games as well. They’re an extremely good team, they play a good structure, they’re physical, they’re simple, so we know we’re going into a dogfight. It’s going to be a game that is going to basically be like a playoff atmosphere, so we’re just going to treat it like it’s round 1 of the playoffs and we just got to get 1 game done at a time and hopefully just take care of Friday night and see what happens Saturday.”

The puck drops at Great Falls on both Friday and Saturday at 7:05pm.

The Hawks will be back at home on Friday and Saturday, December 6th and 7th vs. Cody.

Hawks vs. Gillette Recap: (Courtesy: Sheridan Hawks)

The Sheridan Hawks and Gillette Wild played a home and away weekend series, but while they split the travel the Hawks took both the wins.

Friday night the Hawks played before a home crowd at the Whitney Rink in the M&M’s Center.

Early in the first period, Sheridan’s Josh Serino got things started with a goal, assisted by Zach Longnecker and Vincent Leaf.

Kiefer Dunham got the Hawks another goal with assists from Daniel Shelden and Elijah Farris.

The Wild weren’t out of the fight though, and tied it up to initiate the second period with a goal from Tai Kontrec to put the Wild on the board, and then one from Brady Johnson to even it up.

Derek Laite, assisted by Logan Hume and Connor Hulett, added another goal for Sheridan to move them ahead again.

Longnecker got assisted by Leaf and Serino to move the Hawks backup by two to end the period.

In the third, Hume with help from Kadin Edwards and Gavin Elliott got a goal, and Serino, assisted by Leaf and Longnecker, added another.

Gillette kept up the pressure though, and Brady Johnson netted the puck a minute later to bring the game a little closer.

But the Hawks responded by adding to their lead with one from Tyler Kemp, with help from Vlad Zubriichuk and Ernest Allen.

Serino then scored another, his third of the night, assisted by Leaf and Hume, to end the game with a final score of 8 to 3.

Hawks goalie John Simon made 44 saves for the Sheridan Hawks in the win.

Saturday night the Hawks made the trip east to play before an excited group of Gillette fans.

Once again the game was fast paced and hard fought, with the action being much closer than the final score would suggest.

The Sheridan Hawks got off to a fast start, scoring each of the first three goals of the game.

First off to put the biscuit in the basket was Eli White on a power play, assisted by Keifer Dunham.

Serino followed up two minutes later, with an assist by Longnecker, to move the Hawks to a 2-0 lead going into the 2nd period.

Keeping up the momentum, Dunham got one by the Wild netminder off an assist from Charlie Stow two minutes into the start of the period.

However, the Gillette Wild stormed back to make a game of it. In fact, they tied the game 3-3 heading into the third period, two of them on power plays from a Hawks slashing and then an interference call.

In addition, the Hawks lost the bench services of Head Coach JJ Santagata who was ejected following an attempt to dispute a fighting call and game ejection of Vincent Leaf.

But the Hawks players didn’t let that phase them and came roaring back into the game with a short handed goal from Serino, assisted by Logan Sidlauskas.

Zubriichuk scored next, with help from Serino and a Sean Harris to regain a 2 point Sheridan lead.

Hume then added another assisted by Allen to solidify the advantage.

The Wild managed just one more goal and then it was the Hawks the rest of the way with two unassisted goals, one from Serino and the last from Hume to make it 8-4 and put another one in the win column.

Josh Serino scored a hat trick while adding an assist to lead his team to victory away from home, his second of the weekend and his 3rd hatty in his past three games.

Once again Simon had a great night between the pipes, stopping 33 shots for the win.

Sheridan currently is at 15-5-2-0 and holds the second seed in the Frontier Division.

Serino holds on to his place as top goal scorer in the league and third in total points.

The Hawks are away this weekend to play the Great Falls Americans and return home on December 6 & 7 when they host the Yellowstone Quake in their final games before the NA3HL Showcase in Blaine, MN and the holiday break.

  • New homeowner discovers ‘surreal’ changes after adopting new lifestyle: ‘It’s great, isn’t it?’

New homeowner discovers ‘surreal’ changes after adopting new lifestyle: ‘It’s great, isn’t it?’

Minimalism is more than a buzzword — it’s an impactful way to tackle the world’s waste problem. The mindful practice involves living with less stuff, cutting clutter from our lives through consuming less, donating excess, and mindfully purchasing.

Many people label minimalism as anti-consumerism — and while it often is, that isn’t all. Many minimalists talk about how the practice is a freeing way to rid yourself of physical, emotional, and mental clutter and focus on the things that matter.

One Reddit user new to minimalism recently began experiencing the perks of the practice firsthand.

In a post on the r/minimalism subreddit, the homeowner reflected on the positive changes they’ve noticed after implementing minimalistic practices. The Redditor said the differences they’ve noticed are “surreal.”

“I was always too busy or didn’t have the time to do stuff that wasn’t connected to my home or my family,” the commenter wrote. “But what I’m realizing is when I wake up in the morning and I can see floor space and less stuff, my brain gives me permission to take the day off. My brain says it’s OK to relax.”

While a consumer-minded culture may have us thinking we need to buy new stuff constantly, it is important to realize that we don’t. Being mindful about what you buy and consume can help you save money, better appreciate the items you do purchase, and help the planet out in the process.

Professional organizers tell the Boston Globe and Los Angeles Times that the average home contains about 300,000 individual items — from paper clips to furniture. While that’s a lot of stuff, many Americans aren’t just storing their things at home. According to the Self Storage Association, around 11% of U.S. households rent a self-storage unit.

Aside from knick-knacks and decor, clothing is a major contributor to household clutter. The Public Interest Research Group reports that the average American buys 53 new clothing items per year. Even with all that buying, one global study of consumerist nations found the average person wears only 50% of what’s in their closet.

It’s easy to see that the U.S. has a problem with stuff — and that problem causes loads of production-based pollution, packed landfills, and loads of money

Many minimalist Redditors could relate to the Redditor’s post, explaining they’ve also realized that letting go of physical mess allows their brain to become less cluttered.

“I’m in the beginning stages of a more minimalist life too,” a commenter wrote. “It’s great isn’t it?”

“Your environment can affect your mood,” another commenter added. “Keep it up, focus on what you use, need, and value; prune the rest.”

  • Tyler Warren ‘a great example of what a Penn State football player is,’ posts record-breaking game | Penn State Football News

Tyler Warren ‘a great example of what a Penn State football player is,’ posts record-breaking game | Penn State Football News

Everyone says records are made to be broken, and one was when Drew Allar found Tyler Warren from Washington’s 3-yard line for a 2-yard gain late in the fourth quarter, giving Warren the Penn State single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end.

The previous record was held by Mike Gesicki, who recorded 679 receiving yards in 2016. Warren left the Nittany Lions’ 35-6 win over the Huskies with 681.

“To be in that conversation with as many great tight ends who have played here and that I’ve played with is special to me,” Warren said. “That’s kind of what makes it special to me is knowing the guys that have been here and how talented Penn State tight ends are, so that’s kind of why (the record) means so much to me.”

Warren didn’t only break Gesicki’s single-season receiving yards record, he also broke Gesicki’s record for most single-season receptions by a tight end in Penn State history with 58.

Those aren’t the only records Warren has broken this season — James Franklin said there’s “about 33 more.” As a result of his record-breaking season, Warren was named a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end, and a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award, given to the most versatile player in college football.

“I don’t see how this guy doesn’t win the Mackey Award and the Paul Hornung award,” Franklin said. “They would be proud of that guy representing their award. He does everything right on and off the field, he’s done it that way since he stepped on campus, so just a great example of what a Penn State football player is.”

After losing to Ohio State last week, one of the biggest complaints Penn State fans had was the lack of involvement from Warren. The Nittany Lions had the ball inside the 5-yard line and didn’t attempt to get the ball into the tight end’s hands once, something Franklin said Penn State should’ve done.

To remedy that, Penn State gave Warren the ball at the goal line twice. The first time, Warren jumped over the entire Washington defensive line to put the ball across, which he joked was a bit scary, but the end result was all that mattered.

“I was up there for a little while. There’s a point where I was getting a little worried,” Warren said. “I did have to stretch out a little bit, but getting six points in that situation is what we want to do, so I was happy with it.”

Warren tallied his second rushing touchdown of the game on Penn State’s next drive, and finished the contest with three rushes for seven yards on top of eight catches for 75 yards.

“Obviously you can see how many ways we got him involved today, run-game wise, pass-game wise and even some of our option stuff,” Allar said. “We just try to get him involved in the game plan as much as we can, because we know what type of player he is and how much he helps our offense just generate explosive plays in general.”

Warren has cemented himself as a Penn State great, but the work doesn’t stop for the senior, who was disappointed with his fumble in the third quarter and a few other plays.

“(I think the offense) did a great job,” Warren said. “In the second half, that’s on me stopping that first drive with that fumble, so that’s something I got to work on.”

Regardless, Warren showed Saturday what’s been clear all season — the sky’s the limit for the senior tight end, who the Nittany Lions are always trying to involve.

“He’s our best playmaker on offense and the best tight end in the country,” Allar said. “We’re going to get him involved in the game somehow, in some way, in some form or capacity … Just getting him easy completions. He’s hard to bring down. There weren’t many cases where one guy brought him down today.”

“A Great Loss for the Sport” – Iga Swiatek Highlights the Saddening Impact of Ashleigh Barty’s Shocking Retirement

“I achieved my dreams,” said Ashleigh Barty when she announced her retirement from the sport. A young Aussie legend, who took the WTA world by storm made everyone fall in love with her rhythm on the court. However, her decision to retire from the sport sent everyone in shock, including Iga Swiatek. The current world number 2 opened up on Barty’s decision to retire and how she felt about it.

Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement from tennis in March 2022 at the young age of 25. As a former world number one and three-time Grand Slam singles champion, Barty left behind a powerful legacy. She won the French Open in 2019, Wimbledon in 2021, and the Australian Open in 2022, making her mark as one of the most versatile players in recent years. Barty also achieved success in doubles, winning the 2018 US Open with partner Coco Vandeweghe. Her impressive career included 15 singles and 12 doubles titles on the WTA Tour.

Reflecting on Barty’s unexpected retirement, current world number two Iga Swiatek recently shared her reaction. “I didn’t understand what had happened,” Swiatek admitted during an interview with the Billie Jean King Cup’s media personnel. “Ash was the undisputed leader, playing the best tennis. Even if I knew where she was going to hit, it was still difficult to face her shot.” Swiatek noted that Barty’s departure felt “strange” and was a “great loss for the sport.”

Swiatek also recognized the impact Barty’s retirement had on her career, saying, “I had only been number 2 for a few days when suddenly the opportunity to climb to the top of the rankings presented itself to me.”

Ever since retiring from the sport, Barty has ventured into new areas: she has authored books, married golfer Garry Kissick, and even played professional cricket. Known for her all-court game, Barty possessed a versatile shot-making ability and was a standout server, frequently ranking among the WTA Tour’s top players in aces and service points won.

However, this is not the first time when Iga Swiatek has opened up on Ash Barty’s retirement. Back in 2023, she opened up on the same thing.

‘I was sobbing’- when Ashleigh Barty’s retirement left Iga Swiatek crying

When Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement from tennis at just 25, Iga Swiatek, then world no. 2, felt an intense wave of emotion. “I was sobbing. I couldn’t stop crying,” Swiatek revealed. In an interview with The Players’ Tribune, the Polish star opened up about how deeply the news affected her. “It might sound strange, but I was so confused and shocked that Ash was 25, and she was retiring,” she shared.

Swiatek explained the sudden uncertainty she faced, having held the no. 2 ranking for only 3 days. “There was some confusion about what was going to happen,” she admitted. The early retirement challenged her long-held idea that players step away from the game only when their bodies can no longer cope, typically in their early 30s.

Upon watching Barty’s retirement video on Instagram, Swiatek began to understand her decision. “Right now, I understand it even more,” she reflected. Swiatek acknowledged Barty’s unmatched skill, saying, “Ash has the best tennis out there, hands down.” Struggling to process it all, she admitted, “I didn’t know if she was unhappy or something.” Interestingly, Iga Swiatek and Ash Barty have played each other twice and the Aussie star came up on top on both occasions.

Ashleigh Barty’s career was truly an exceptional one. Her retirement left a huge impact on everyone. What are your thoughts on the same? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Discover a New Passion for Crafting with The Great Pottery Throw Down on BBC Lifestyle

A common misconception is that pottery is a difficult, tedious craft that requires years to master. But The Great Pottery Throw Down on BBC Lifestyle shows that this is far from the truth.

Pottery and ceramics are a fun, creative outlet that anyone can enjoy, whether they’re complete novices or experienced artists. From simple clay mugs to intricate vases, pottery allows us to craft unique, personal pieces.

But, when it comes to pottery making, it’s not only about the end result – it’s also the journey of moulding the clay that allows potters to really showcase their creativity. With the right mindset and some inspiration, people will be surprised at how quickly they can take their skills to the next level.

Season 7 of The Great Pottery Throw Down, airing every Monday at 20:00 on BBC Lifestyle (DStv Channel 120), brings together twelve of Britain’s finest home potters as they compete in weekly challenges, transforming raw clay into stunning creations.

Hosted by Siobhan McSweeney and judged by pottery experts Keith Brymer Jones and Rich Miller, the show celebrates pottery’s boundless potential, showcasing contestants from diverse backgrounds as they turn simple clay into extraordinary works of art.

Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned artist, the show captivates and inspires viewers to embark on their own pottery journey. This season’s challenges include intricate animal busts and cascading water features.

Pottery making isn’t as complicated as it seems. Those who are interested in taking this up as a hobby don’t need to start by throwing complex vases on the wheel. Beginning with small projects, like mugs or simple bowls, is essential to get invested in the creative process.

Even for beginners, pottery can be accessible and fun. Take it from Ikho Kweba, a Mzansi favourite known for his style, comedy skits, and vlogging content. Ikho, looking to pick up a new hobby, proves that the first step to making beautiful pottery is simply getting behind the wheel – literally.

Gaining confidence in one’s skillset and understanding how the clay behaves allows future potters to work their way up to more ambitious projects. Feeling inspired and want to visit the nearest pottery studio to create something beautiful? Here’s a quick guide on what to get started with based on your experience.

Starting Your Pottery Journey: Beginner to Intermediate

For those feeling inspired by the show, pottery studios offer the ideal environment to get started. As a beginner, you can start with hand-building techniques like pinching, coiling, and slab-building, creating simple items like bowls, mugs, or vases. These techniques are the building blocks of pottery, and they’re featured prominently in The Great Pottery Throw Down, showing how even the simplest items can become personal works of art.

As you progress, the challenge of the potter’s wheel awaits — one of the most mesmerising parts of the show. Wheel-throwing allows for more complex forms, like symmetrical vases, plates, or sets of cups, which you can make as you hone your skills. This stage introduces you to the rhythmic, almost meditative process of shaping clay on the wheel, an experience both rewarding and therapeutic.

    Advanced Techniques: Mastering Your Craft

For those who’ve truly caught the pottery bug, The Great Pottery Throw Down captures some of the most intricate and complex techniques that take pottery from hobby to high art. Advanced pottery enthusiasts can try creating larger, more elaborate pieces such as sculptural works or multi-part installations. The show regularly features advanced techniques such as slip casting, intricate carving, and raku firing, giving audiences a glimpse of just how limitless the possibilities are once you reach a more advanced level.

Just like in The Great Pottery Throw Down, where each contestant evolves week after week, you can too – the key is to keep experimenting and having fun.

If you’re looking for a little more inspiration, tune into The Great Pottery Throw Down on BBC Brit every Monday at 20:00. Watching the contestants push their creative boundaries is sure to motivate you to take on your next pottery project.

  • Great British Bake Off Halloween special is slapped with a ‘woke’ trigger warning for younger viewers – before noticing the accidental error

Great British Bake Off Halloween special is slapped with a ‘woke’ trigger warning for younger viewers – before noticing the accidental error

Channel 4 issued an accidental warning on an old Halloween-themed episode of the Great British Bake Off.

The special spooky episode aired in 2022 during the baking show’s 13th series, with the bakers set to making dishes inspired by the holiday.

But according to The Sun, on Channel 4’s streaming service the episode was marked with a guidance message, warning the content wasn’t suitable for younger viewers.

The first Halloween Week show saw the iconic Bake Off tent aptly decorated with skeletons, spiderwebs and balloons.

While judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood tasked the contestants with whipping up apple and pumpkin bakes for them to try.

The guidance warnings are usually reserved for material that can be potentially harmful or offensive, such as strong language, violence, graphic images and sexual behaviour, with more extensive rules surrounding content for under-18s.

According to Channel 4’s compliance guide, which is based on the recommendations of the Ofcom Code: ‘Paranormal practices which are for entertainment purposes, as opposed to those which purport to be real, can be broadcast before the watershed but not when significant numbers of children are likely to be watching.’

The Sun claims the warning remained in place until they got in touch with broadcaster and it was removed, with Channel 4 insisting it had been an error.

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Channel 4 for comment.

It comes after the Great British Bake Off’s spin-off show, An Extra Slice, was hit by backlash this month, as it was accused of sharing a ‘harmful message’.

Following Bread Week, presenters Jo Brand and Tom Allen were joined by guests Jonathan Ross, Ravneet Gill and Josh Pugh to discuss the episode.

However, after poking fun at coelic disease, the show was hit by criticism from both viewers and a leading charity for ‘undermined the seriousness’ of the condition.

Speaking on the show, Jonathan had declared: ‘I’ve never met a loaf I didn’t love’ while Josh echoed he had ‘never met anyone who didn’t like bread’.

Ravneet had then added: ‘Well I love bread but my Mum’s coeliac so she shouldn’t eat bread, but she still loves it, she still eats it.’

Jo responded: ‘Good for her,’ while Jonathan joked: ‘And good for whoever cleans up after her.’

Since then the charity Coeliac UK has written an open letter, which was also shared on Instagram, to the producers of the show ‘expressing concern’.

The letter, which is signed by chief executive officer Hilary Croft, reads: ‘These comments trivialise coeliac disease and send a harmful message to the public.

‘Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition where the ingestion of gluten triggers an immune response that damages the gut lining, leading to nutrient malabsorption and a host of potential health complications.

‘Even the smallest crumb of gluten can cause severe symptoms, including debilitating pain, prolonged suffering and even recurrent miscarriage, as long-term health risks such as osteoporosis and, in rare cases, small bowel cancer.

‘It is crucial to emphasis that coeliac disease is not a food preference or an allergy; it is a serious medical condition that requires lifelong adherence to a strict gluten free diet’.

They continued: ‘We are particularly disheartened by Ravneet Gill’s comments given her previous role as a judge on the Junior Bake Off, where she displayed compassion for those that have been diagnosed with coeliac disease.

In the caption, the Coeliac UK account said they will be ‘following up with the producers’ of the hit show and requested an ‘on-air apology for the harmful portrayal of the disease’

‘The remarks made during An Extra Slice perpetuate a narrative that dismisses the severity of this condition.

‘They suggest that individuals with coeliac disease should compromise their health for the sake of enjoyment, which undermines the very real challenges they face and ultimately puts their health at risk.

‘Furthermore, the laughter in response to these comments trivilaises the struggles of the 1 in 100 individuals in the UK affected by this condition.

‘It is critical that media representations acknowledge the seriousness of coeliac disease and the physical and mental health implications of adhering to a gluten free diet.

‘Discussions around gluten free diet should promote accurate understanding, respect, and accommodation for dietary needs rather than downplaying their significance.’

The charity added: ‘We are hopeful that this incident will encourage your team to engage in respectful conversations regarding coeliac disease and its impact on individuals and families.’

In the caption of the post, the Coeliac UK account said they will be ‘following up with the producers’ of the hit show and requested an ‘on-air apology for the harmful portrayal of the disease’.

Fans were left disappointed by the show and quickly took to the comments of the letter to share their thoughts and thank the charity.

‘So sad. You wouldn’t make jokes about someone having bowel cancer and having to clean up afterwards; How irresponsible, coeliac disease is serious and you treated like a joke’.

‘Yet again this life threatening and changing disease has been down played by people who do not take time to research and understand.’

‘So frustrating when we are all working so hard to raise awareness of coeliac disease in the right ways. It’s especially frustrating when a programme isn’t even live and was prerecorded as it could have been stopped from being aired.’

‘It is upsetting when programmes like this make a joke of it by implying that a gluten free diet is just a lifestyle choice when in fact those of use who have been diagnosed with coeliac disease have no choice because it can affect our health in so many ways.’

  • British Olympic cycling great Sir Chris Hoy, 48, reveals he has terminal cancer

British Olympic cycling great Sir Chris Hoy, 48, reveals he has terminal cancer

Hoy was told that his tumours were at stage 4 by his doctor and that they were incurable.

“And just like that,” Hoy wrote. “I learn how I will die.”

His wife Sarra asked what treatment options were available but medics described it as the management of his condition.

“How long do I have?” Hoy asked. “Two to four years,” he was told.

Hoy, who has been undergoing chemotherapy, took the step of having a cold cap in an attempt to save his hair after his son Callum asked him if that would be a side effect of the treatment.

He said it was like your head “being in a vice”, during all six rounds over 18 weeks and said it was the most painful procedure he had ever been through. “And I’ve got a very high pain threshold,” he said.

He said he suffered such a bad allergic reaction to the chemo in round two that the session went from two hours long to four.

The impact of the treatment left him “absolutely broken by the end of it”.

Back in February Hoy said on social media that he had been diagnosed with cancer and that his treatment was “thankfully going really well”.

He added then: “I’m optimistic, positive.”

The father of two, whose children are 10 and seven, in an interview with The Sunday Times Magazine, said he originally went to the doctor in September last year.

He thought he had suffered a shoulder strain because he was “getting a bit old for lifting heavy weights”.

Tumour was found in his shoulder

It was discovered he had a tumour in his shoulder and a further scan uncovered that the primary cancer was in his prostate, which had spread to his bones.

There were tumours in his shoulder, pelvis, hip, spine and rib.

Hoy, in a memoir which he has written in the past year, said: “[You are told] one sentence that some person you’ve never met before has just told you.

“And in the space of one sentence, just a collection of words, your whole world has fallen apart.”

His memoir is due to be published next month.

Reveals his wife has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis

He also told how his wife Sarra has also had to deal with the diagnosis that she has a “very active and aggressive” type of multiple sclerosis following a scan last November.

She made the devastating discovery after she started to suffer a curious tingling sensation in her face and tongue.

Hoy said the biggest challenge was having to tell their children Callum and Chloe but he was able to find perspective and positivity.

“I’m not trying to pretend that every day is amazing. But I have genuine moments of joy… I’m back to my old self,” he said.

Sir Chris told The Sunday Times: “As unnatural as it feels, this is nature.”

He added: “You know, we were all born and we all die, and this is just part of the process.

“You remind yourself, aren’t I lucky that there is medicine I can take that will fend this off for as long as possible.”

    Diagnosis came as huge shock

Hoy, who was a pundit for the BBC covering the Paris 2024 Olympics in the summer, was such a dominant force in sprint cycling that he had won six Olympic, 11 world and 34 World Cup titles by the time he retired from competitive racing in 2013.

He is the third most-decorated British Olympian of all time, with six career golds and one silver medal.

Sir Chris said the diagnosis came as a “huge shock”.

He wrote: “I have a bit of news. Last year I was diagnosed with cancer, which came as a huge shock, having had no symptoms up to that point.”

Sir Chris extended his “sincere gratitude” to medical professionals for their “amazing help and care”.

The Scot said: “While I’m thankful for any support, I’d like to deal with this privately.

“My heart goes out to the many others who are also going through similar challenges right now.

“I’m optimistic, positive and surrounded by love for which I’m truly grateful. As you might imagine, the last few months have been incredibly difficult. However, I currently feel fine.”

Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, who received treatment for kidney cancer in 2021, told Sky News’s Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips: “He’s such an inspirational guy, and I thought that was particularly true in the way that he has talked about his terminal cancer diagnosis today.

“I think to have two-to-four years potentially left to live and yet to maintain that optimism and positivity that has characterised his life and career is remarkable.”

He added: “I’m just in awe, actually, of how he is dealing with that, because I’m not sure how I would react in the same situation.”

Sir Mark Cavendish, who holds the record for most stages won in the Tour de France, was among those sending messages in response, describing his fellow cycling knight as a “hero of a human being”.

Former Scotland footballer turned commentator Ally McCoist said “You, my friend are a superstar in every sense of the word”, while fellow Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes, Britain’s most successful Paralympian Dame Storey, comedian Jack Whitehall, British Cycling and reigning world sprint champion Harrie Lavreysen were among those replying with messages of support.

On X, fellow multiple Olympic champion Sir Matthew Pinsent said his thoughts were with Sir Chris and his family, describing him as “one of the finest to ever represent our country”.

  • ‘I’ve no ego. I want to play great football but also we do go direct’ – Damien Duff delighted with Reds response in big win

‘I’ve no ego. I want to play great football but also we do go direct’ – Damien Duff delighted with Reds response in big win

And Reds manager Damien Duff says he’s happy to live on his nerves and cope with the curve balls as his club enter the last two rounds of games in the season with their leadership of the league table intact.

At one stage on Friday night, when Shels were losing 1-0 at home to Waterford while Derry City were ahead away to Dundalk, the table had a grim look for the Reds and it looked as if they faced a challenge to see out a title challenge which was in danger of fading, on a run of one win in the previous 10 games.

Dan McDonnell and Seán O’Connor look back on a huge night of drama at both ends of the League of Ireland table

But a resurgence by the Reds, with goals from Sean Boyd (2) and Liam Burt, earned them a 3-1 win which allows them carry that two-point lead into next week’s games where Shels are at home to Drogheda United – a side they have yet to beat this season – and Derry are away to an in-form St Patrick’s Athletic.

“We speak about it, the nerves. Was I a bit nervous before the game? Yeah, but I like nerves,” Duff said after that win.

“Every time I pulled the jersey on as a player for whoever I was playing for, I was always a little bit nervous. It always drove me to have a real clarity and aggression in my play – it’s something I always talk about with our lads, the tension, the nerves. They’re going to be there but it has to be a driver. It could be a weight on your shoulders but it’s about striking that fine balance. On Friday, for sure, you’d have to say it drove the lads.”

“I just thought there was a beautiful energy. Granted, there was a beautiful tension in the ground, which is what we want here at Tolka Park. So always had faith, I guess. We knew we couldn’t make any more changes, obviously with the first change in the first half,” he says, referring to the enforced early substitution where Ali Coote had to withdraw, replaced by compatriot Liam Burt, as he also conceded that Shels lacked conviction with first half opportunities.

“We had three or four decent chances I thought. What stood out with Sean’s chances was he was calm, didn’t slash at it, whereas the rest in the first half we slashed at in real desperation to score. You can’t be desperate, you have to be cool as ice. Then the second half, did we create a lot at times? No. But we worked our way back. And the third goal, Liam, he can do that. In the pockets, rolling people, his shooting from distance is elite,” Duff added

“With the penalty, I’ve no ego. I want to play great football and dominate the ball, but also we do go direct.”
