  • Lasry’s Avenue Sports Fund joins Unrivaled’s star-studded investor group

Lasry’s Avenue Sports Fund joins Unrivaled’s star-studded investor group

Unrivaled, the new 3×3 professional women’s basketball league set to launch in the US in January, has received new investment from the Avenue Sports Fund.

The firm joins the league’s investor group that already includes several former US athletes such as Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Carmelo Anthony, and Steve Nash, as well as businessman Gary Vaynerchuck and media executives Ann Sarnoff, John Skipper and David Levy.

As a player-led league, Unrivaled athletes will also have equity in the competition, which was co-founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart.

The Avenue Sports Fund, the sport investment arm of the Avenue Capital group, is led by Marc Lasry as chairman, CEO and co-founder.

Lasry has strong basketball ties having previously served as a co-owner of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks for almost a decade before selling his 25% stake in the franchise last year for $3.5 billion.

On the Unrivaled investment, Lasry said: “We have a deep understanding of basketball globally and believe Unrivaled is well positioned to benefit from several drivers, including the growing popularity of women’s basketball at multiple levels.

“We look forward to partnering with Unrivaled as it becomes an established player in women’s sports.”

Unrivaled president Alex Bazzell added: “Marc Lasry and Avenue Sports’ investment is instantly elevating Unrivaled to the next level and we’re incredibly grateful for their commitment to what we’re building.

“This investment doesn’t just demonstrate a desire to support the league, it demonstrates an understanding of how Unrivaled is uniquely positioned in the women’s sports landscape to be a game-changer for investors, partners, and players alike.”

Unrivaled will officially tip off its inaugural season on January 17.

Last month, (October) the new league signed a multi-year media rights partnership with TNT Sports in the US. As part of that deal, TNT Sports also agreed to invest an undisclosed amount in Unrivaled.

In July, meanwhile, Unrivaled brought in financial services brand Ally as its founding brand partner.

Ally Financial is the league’s founding partner, and State Farm also recently joined the league’s growing partnership portfolio.

Unrivaled recently hired Micky Lawler, the former Women’s Tennis Association president, as its first commissioner.

  • Bull doge! Dogecoin soars as Trump announces a government efficiency group nicknamed DOGE

Bull doge! Dogecoin soars as Trump announces a government efficiency group nicknamed DOGE

NEW YORK — Wow, much bull market.

Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency whose mascot is a super-cute dog that muses things like “much wow,” has been surging in value since Donald Trump won the presidential election last week. It’s hitting the afterburners now, after Trump named Tesla’s Elon Musk as one of the heads of a new “Department of Government Efficiency,” which is not a government agency but does have the acronym DOGE.

All this makes sense and is maybe humorous for anyone who’s chronically online. For others, here’s some explanation about what’s going on:

It’s a cryptocurrency, whose value rises and falls against the U.S. dollar based on however much people will pay for it.

At first, it was seen as a joke. But over time, dogecoin has amassed a group of fans who have periodically sent its price soaring. Like other cryptocurrencies, supporters say it could be used to buy and sell things on the internet without having to worry about a central bank or government affecting how many are in circulation.

One dogecoin — which is pronounced dohj-coin — was worth less than 16 cents just before Election Day. It’s since more than doubled to roughly 41.5 cents, as of midday Wednesday, according to CoinDesk.

Cryptocurrencies have generally been shooting higher since Trump’s election. Bitcoin, which is the most famous digital currency, has set an all-time high above $92,000 after starting the year below $43,000.

Excitement is racing because Trump has embraced crypto and said he wants the United States to be the “crypto capital of the planet” and create a bitcoin “strategic reserve.”

Musk has become one of Trump’s close allies. He’s also been one of the most famous fans of dogecoin. In 2021, Musk played a character on “Saturday Night Live” who went by the nickname, the “Dogefather.”

In 2022, Musk made more headlines when he suggested Twitter should perhaps accept dogecoin as payment for subscriptions.

It all came to a head Tuesday, when Trump announced the “Department of Government Efficiency,” which will work from outside the government to offer the White House “advice and guidance” and will partner with the Office of Management and Budget to “drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before.”

It has the acronym DOGE, which is also the ticker symbol under which dogecoin trades. Musk will lead it, along with former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

    Dogecoin’s history is interesting.

In 2021, on April 20, dogecoin fans tried but failed to get its value above $1 on what they were calling “Doge Day.”

April 20 has long been an unofficial holiday for marijuana devotees, and Musk himself has referred to 420 several times in his career, including his tweet in 2018 saying he had secured funding to take Tesla private at a price of $420 per share.

Sadly, no. The dog, whose real name was Kabosu, passed away in Japan earlier this year at 18 years old. Much rest, may she have.

  • Chinese hackers target Tibetan websites in malware attack, cybersecurity group says

Chinese hackers target Tibetan websites in malware attack, cybersecurity group says

BANGKOK — A hacking group that is believed to be Chinese state-sponsored has compromised two websites with ties to the Tibetan community in an attack meant to install malware on users’ computers, according to findings released Wednesday by a private cybersecurity firm.

The hack of the Tibet Post and Gyudmed Tantric University websites appears geared toward obtaining access to the computers of people visiting to obtain information on them and their activities, according to the analysis by the Insikt Group, the threat research division of the Massachusetts-based cybersecurity consultancy Recorded Future.

The hackers, known in the report as TAG-112, compromised the websites so that visitors are prompted to download a malicious executable file disguised as a security certificate, Insikt Group said. Once opened, the file loads Cobalt Strike Beacon malware on the user’s computer that can be used for key logging, file transferring and other purposes, including deploying additional malware.

“While we do not have visibility into the activity that TAG-112 conducted on compromised devices in this campaign, given their likely cyber espionage remit and the targeting of the Tibetan community, it is almost certain that they were engaged in information collection and/or surveillance rather than destructive attacks,” Insikt Group senior director Jon Condra told The Associated Press.

“This behavior aligns with historical targeting of the Tibetan community,” he said.

Chinese authorities have consistently denied any form of state-sponsored hacking, saying China itself is a major target of cyberattacks.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said it was not aware of the hacking of the two websites reported by the Insikt Group.

“China’s stance on the issue of cybersecurity is consistent and clear,” the ministry said in a faxed reply to a request for comment without elaborating.

According to the Insikt group research, the sites were first compromised in late May and the attacks bear many overlaps with a previously tracked hacker group known as TAG-102, leading analysts to conclude it is a subgroup of the already known group “working toward the same or similar intelligence requirements,” Insikt Group said.

Overlaps include reuse of specific tactics, techniques and procedures and going after identical targets, Condra said.

“These two threat clusters are almost certainly interrelated,” he said.

TAG-102, known by multiple names such as Evasive Panda and StormBamboo, has been in operation since as early as 2012, and is widely thought to be a Chinese-sponsored advanced persistent threat, or APT, group, Insikt Group said.

Among other things, it uses custom malware frameworks used by other Chinese APT groups and its targeting “aligns with likely Chinese intelligence requirements,” Condra said.

“The group has engaged in a wide variety of campaigns over the years, with an emphasis on targeting individuals and organizations in opposition to the Chinese government, such as human rights organizations, religious organizations, ethnic minority groups, academic institutions, and supporters of democracy or independence movements in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and even in mainland China,” Insikt Group said.

The university and the news website, which are both located in India, have been informed by Insikt Group of the hack. As of this week, it appears the Gyudmed Tantric University, which is a place of learning about Tibetan Buddhism, language, history and culture, has remediated the problem while the news website remained compromised, Condra said.

The Tibet Post is known for promoting democracy, freedom of speech and for advocating Tibetan independence from China, he said.

China claims Tibet has been part of its territory for centuries, although it only established firm control over the Himalayan region after the Communist Party swept to power during a civil war in 1949.

Many Tibetans’ loyalties still lie with the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader who has lived in exile in India since a failed anti-Chinese uprising in 1959.

China has been regularly accused of human rights abuses in Tibet, including earlier this year over its efforts to forcibly urbanize villagers and herders as part of a drive to assimilate rural Tibetans through control over their language and traditional Buddhist culture.

  • CSCAA Among Coaching Group Hiring Lobbyists To Protect Olympic Sports In New NCAA Era

CSCAA Among Coaching Group Hiring Lobbyists To Protect Olympic Sports In New NCAA Era

The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) is among eight coaching advocacy groups that have hired lobbying firm FGS Global to represent them in ensuring Olympic sports survive in the new NCAA.

The CSCAA is joined by seven other coaching groups from Olympic sports:

    • The American Baseball Coaches Association
    • American Volleyball Coaches Association
    • College Swimming & Diving Association of America
    • Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association
    • Intercollegiate Tennis Association
    • National Field Hockey Coaches Association
    • U.S. Track & Field And Cross Country Coaches Association
    • National Wrestling Coaches Association

Earlier this month the group retained FGS to lobby on federal name, image and likeness (NIL) legislation “that protects Olympic sports programs and broad-based sports sponsorship,” according to disclosure filings, Politico reports.

The news comes as the gears are turning in regards to the landmark settlement in the House v. NCAA case, which was granted preliminary approval in October.

The settlement will allow schools to have a revenue-sharing agreement with their student-athletes, allowing them to earn a cut of things like TV deals, ticket sales and sponsorships, which benefits football and basketball greatly and poses an imminent threat to the non-revenue-generating sports, namely Olympic sports.

In order to comply with settlement agreements, there is fear that the funding for the non-revenue sports will be diverted elsewhere. Additionally, if athletes are deemed to be employees, funding could be cut in order to be used for player salaries.

One of the lobbyists hired by the coaching group, Colleen Bell, is a former legislative director for Senator Richard Blumenthal, who is one of the Democrats leading these discussions on Capitol Hill, Politico reports. Also working the account for FGS will be Megan MooreBrian Gaston and Rob Mejia.

The NCAA and Power Conferences have spent millions on a federal lobbying campaign to preserve amateurism and keep Olympic sports alive, Front Office Sports reports, specifically asking for a law that prevents student-athletes from being classified as professionals.

However, the coaching group clearly believes they need their own lobbyists—though FBS is notably part of the NCAA and Power Conference effort, having served as a lobbyist for the Big Ten in years past.

Front Office Sports also reported that the outcome of the U.S. election on Nov. 5 could dictate whether or not the NCAA gets the pro-amateurism law it has been seeking since 2020.

The upcoming timeline for the settlement in the House case can be found here.

  • Eurokars Group opens new BMW Eurokars Flagship Centre and Mini Habitat showrooms, Lifestyle News

Eurokars Group opens new BMW Eurokars Flagship Centre and Mini Habitat showrooms, Lifestyle News

The Eurokars Group has officially opened its new BMW Eurokars Flagship Centre and Mini Habitat showrooms along Leng Kee Road, following a major rejuvenation of both facilities.

The new showrooms feature the BMW Retail.Next and Mini Retail.Next concepts, which place a strong focus on delivering a premium customer experience.

The BMW Eurokars Flagship Centre, situated at 29 Leng Kee Road, joins the BMW Eurokars Experience Centre at 11 Kung Chong Road as the two main retail touchpoints for BMW Eurokars in Singapore.

The company says that most of the BMW models will be at the Flagship Centre, while ultra-high-end luxury and performance models like the M cars will be located at the Experience Centre.

BMW Eurokars spent an estimated $20 million to renovate the facility, which previously housed the Porsche Centre Singapore, into the new Flagship Centre.

The entire refurbishment project took about six months and the six-storey building spans approximately 3,258 sq m.

The showroom space occupies the first two levels of the facility, along with a customer lounge and two delivery suites where customers can take delivery of their cars.

The third floor features an event space, as well as BMW Eurokars’ corporate office, while the service centres for BMW and Mini are on the fourth and fifth storeys respectively.

Meanwhile, the Mini Habitat showroom next door at 27 Leng Kee Road has also undergone a refurbishment, and the three-storey facility houses a two-level showroom space, a hospitality lounge, a car delivery suite, corporate offices and meeting rooms, as well as an outdoor area on the third floor that can be used for events and customer parties.

There is also an integrated service reception in between both showrooms that cater to both BMW and Mini owners, and ensures that customers enjoy a streamlined and personalised experience when they bring their cars in for servicing.

A key highlight of both the BMW Eurokars Flagship Centre and the Mini Habitat is the Emotional Virtual Experience (EVE) section, which allows customers to visualise and tailor their cars to their exact preferences.

The customisation process can be guided along by the brand consultants to ensure that every detail, from the colour to the interior trim, is precisely to the customer’s specifications.

The opening of the new BMW Eurokars Flagship Centre and Mini Habitat caps off a period of major transformation for the Eurokars Group over the last two years, and is intended to solidify the company’s dedication towards elevating customer experiences across the three BMW Group brands: BMW, Rolls-Royce and Mini.

The revamped showrooms also align with the BMW Group’s direction of creating a personalised, immersive and seamless experiential customer buying journey.

Former Olympic snowboarder accused of running large drug trafficking group

A former Olympic snowboarder is accused of running a major transnational drug trafficking organization that shipped massive amounts of cocaine and allegedly hired hitmen to murder multiple people, federal officials said.

Ryan Wedding, 43, a former Olympian from Canada who now resides in Mexico, is among 16 people charged in a federal indictment, the Department of Justice announced on Thursday.

The “prolific and ruthless” organized crime group shipped “literally tons of cocaine into the United States and Canada,” U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said during a press briefing.

“They were killers,” said Estrada. “Anyone who got in their way they would target with violence. Including murder.”

Wedding allegedly ran the billion-dollar operation for the past 13 years from Mexico, Estrada said. The organization allegedly moved about 60 tons of cocaine per year, Estrada said.

At one point, the group used the Los Angeles area as a hub for their operation, Estrada said. They allegedly used long-haul trucks to move shipments of cocaine from drug kitchens in Colombia to stash houses in Los Angeles and then would ship the cocaine to mostly Canada but also to the East Coast of the U.S., he said.

Wedding and others allegedly made billions of dollars, which they moved around in the form of cryptocurrency, according to Estrada. They’re accused of laundering a quarter of a billion dollars from April to September, he said.

A photo of narcotics prosecutors said were seized by law enforcement, which was included in a federal indictment.

Law enforcement has seized more than one ton of cocaine, three firearms, dozens of rounds of ammunition, $255,400 in U.S. currency and more than $3.2 million in cryptocurrency as part of its investigation into the so-called Wedding Drug Trafficking Organization, the DOJ said.

The indictment also alleges that the operation used contract killers to assassinate anyone they saw as getting in their way. The victims were all shot execution-style in Canada, so their loved ones could see them murdered, prosecutors said.

The victims included two parents who were murdered in front of their daughter in a case of mistaken identity in 2023, Estrada said. The daughter was also shot multiple times but survived, he said.

Another victim was killed over a drug debt in May, and a fourth was murdered in April, prosecutors said.

Charges in the 16-count superseding indictment include drug counts, criminal enterprise charges and murder in connection with a continuing criminal enterprise and drug crime.

Many of the defendants were arrested in recent weeks in California, Michigan, Florida, Canada, Colombia and Mexico, prosecutors said. Several are expected to make their court appearances in the coming week in Los Angeles, Michigan and Miami.

Wedding is considered a fugitive and the FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for any information leading to his arrest, federal officials said.

Wedding, whose aliases include “El Jefe,” “Giant,” and “Public Enemy,” was previously charged in the original indictment and is the superseding indictment’s lead defendant, prosecutors said.

He competed for Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, where he placed 24th in the giant parallel slalom.

If convicted of murder and attempted murder charges, he faces a mandatory minimum penalty of life in federal prison, the DOJ said. The continuing criminal enterprise charges also carry a mandatory minimum penalty of life in federal prison.
